Park Min Dec 17 2023 4:06 pm The drama started off promisingly but took a nosedive after a pivotal moment around episode 7 when the plot took an unfortunate turn with the very conveniently timed amnesia break. This narrative choice not only broke the momentum built up until that point but also shattered the drama's coherence. After this abrupt twist, the series struggled to regain its footing, and the attempts to recover its initial momentum proved futile, leading to a disjointed narrative and a noticeable decline in quality. While attempting to portray the struggles of the oppressed, the series fell into repetitive cycles, as expected. The romantic elements felt forced and superficial. Rather than enhancing the storyline, the romantic subplot felt out of place and failed to integrate seamlessly into the overarching plot. It felt like they had to give the lead a girl, any girl. Would have been better if his siblings occupied that gap instead of being wasted on the love interest. At least the drama didn't end like Hong Gil Dong (2008).

Seriously? the childhood sequence is really boring and draggy. When your standard is "The Moon Embracing the Sun" in which the child actors carried the drama for 6 episodes, this is literally not it.

I have never loved a story so much. The actors' chemistry and the stories pacing makes this my favorite drama. It also shows that mini historicals can exist :) Go noisy Hongs!!??

Ciepao Jun 25 2021 6:02 am I thought I will find this drama boring since I'm not a big fan of drama when it comes to historical thingy and it has a 30 episodes. But after I watched episode 1 I already got curious and thrilled on what will happen on the next episodes. I really love all the cast here especially the young version of Gil Dong (Lee Ro Woon) because he is sooo adorable. And I fell in love with Gil Hyun (Sim Hee Seop) too.

In short, this drama is absolutely a 10/10. I didn't even got bored on any episodes and all the characters are lovely. All the awards that this drama have won are worth it. You will love this drama and all it's characters. I would recommend you to watch this.

hmmm? Feb 24 2021 4:36 am I’ve been meaning to rewatch this coz I missed the gang specially Mori character and Kim Jung Hyun actor coz he went into a temporary hiatus to get some healing. But then i got sidetracked.

Then came Mr. Queen ..... And I still miss Mori and the gang, so here i am out fresh from rewatching an amazing drama!!!

I wish they make season 2 but maybe with lesser episodes, 12 will be fine lols.

The actors acted their asses off and I mean everyone!!! Kim Sang Joong and Kim Ji Suk deserved their awards because when I tell you they did what they had to!!! Whew!!! I am soooo obsessed with this drama! I can feel the withdrawal coming... Down to the OSTs of this drama was so perfect. The osts were interwoven in the drama beautifully. I completed watching this drama so quickly and it was a 30 episode drama! My only regret is that I took so long to watch this drama despite hearing from 2017 that it was a great drama! This drama is heartwarming and a tearjerker. I felt so uplifted to the point that it brought me to tears multiple times. This a beautiful drama. Beautiful!!! 1000000/10

I don't get how the sister couldn't recognise her own brothers at first and didn't like how Ga-Ryung was very clingy at first. But yeah it was still good. The female characters somehow had the questionable scenes. Last 10 episodes were really good!!

Haikamil Aug 09 2020 4:13 am This was my first 30 episodes drama ever since I started watching Kdrama. Usually, I get discouraged when I see a more than the usual 20 eps... Since I have a lot of time due to quarantine and my love for CSB I gave it a go... The storyline was a bit slow pacing at first and a lot of injustice scenes but I don't know, I like everything about this drama... The great acting from the whole casts! Great chemistry not only with those who have love lines but also among the Hong Clan. I love the funny scenes which makes it lighter and refreshing. I kept missing this drama! I actually saved sone of my fave scenes to rewatched! Good thing it is on Netflix... The biggest injustice here is that Yoon Gyun Sang didn't get an award! He deserves one!

Kudos to the writers and actors for this wonderful drama.

And what made me really like the plot is that it has the right amount of romance in which it contributes to the main plot, not the kind of romance scenes you can skip over and still got the whole storyline. ♥♥

Highly recommend drama, although it is 30 episodes there was no boring episodes and the first 20 episodes make the last 10 worth it. You won’t be disappointed ?.

Kim sang joong really deserved the grand prize and he has always been an actor I highly respect. However yoon gyun sang definitely got robbed of the other awards.

Ppps Jun 18 2018 1:06 am Watchable enough...not an outstanding period drama but it had its fair share of awe moments....some of those superman like stunts of Hong were funny and a bit too much to digest easily but an otherwise decent drama....acting by the cast was quite good and the camaraderie among the guys of Hong was adorable and nice to watch....the ost was just superlative....very uplifting and reflected the mood of the drama very well....will recommend the drama.

This show the how bad life the empire era in korean,when other drama keep showing great life in palace but not in their people...

That mean everything is not beauty that people always want,they always have darkside too, and that's what i love the fact their show make me want to know more about their history...

I like how they picture the life in empire era is not beauty as you usual,that make you realise how much grace you have life in this time, as you see how they see people is just like their pet not human...

I'm not from korean but seeing this folklore i think people in korean more know about it, coz actually i come coz the cast at first not interest with story,but after that i feel like flow with story they make

Mo Ri Jun 15 2017 3:23 pm This was definitely one of my favorite kdramas of this year! Yoon Gyun Sang is a great actor, I loved his acting since watching Doctor Crush. The storyline and direction of the movie was so amazing! Time well spent watching this one. I was slowly getting tired of kdramas with the same old stories but this one was so heartwarming. It brought me to both tears and laughter in just one episode :') Every actor in the drama was great, no matter how small their part was. The best part of this drama is showing that redemption is possible (as with Mo Ri) and that humans are not all good/all bad but that circumstances make them that way. Overall, I loved it and would highly recommend it for those of you trying to find a new drama to watch!

Andrew Jun 07 2017 2:12 am Lee So Min who played Hong Uh Ri Ni/Sang Ha ---- how could she not remember her brother when she saw him hanging on the post in EP 21 and even giving him water?? She said he "looked familiar" but I believe she was not that young when they got separated that she would not remember his face when they first brought him into the palace, nor close up, even though his face was battered somewhat when she gave him water??? Also did she not remember his name/her previous last name???? They mentioned it several times.

I also thought the other girl that was with Sang Ha in the palace attending to Nok So, looked more like Uh Ri Ni when she was younger.

Yoon Gyun-Sang did a great job in this role. At times he sounded just like his father when he spoke. I also liked Chae Soo-Bin as his wife. She is so cute and likeable in this show.

Characters, plot, cinematography, feelings, family bonding, couple relationship, AND the OSTs line-up is the best OST I've ever heard in my k-drama watching experience in my whole life ! All of their OSTs are superb ! I'm glad that I've found a gem that is Ahn Ye Eun from this OST. I'm officially a Gil Ryung shipper because Gil Dong and Ga Ryung couple is my most favorite couple in k-dramaland and they will be a tough match for any other couple. Sad to let go this wonderful sageuk next week.. But I have to move on in order for Yoon Kyun Sang Oppa to be able to move on to another project (no, it should be the other way around.. haha..). Anyway, good job to all of production crew and casts of Rebel. You guys did a great job ! I wish you'll get plenty of acknowledgement which you deserve at the end of the year award. I dont find any flaws because it has none. I fell inlove with Yoon Kyun Sang more and Gil dong will be one of my favorite Kdrama characters. He is the most selfless. I love the Hong fam. I love this drama so much I want to give them all the awards I could think of. I could give them the best squad (Squad Goals).

Honestly the writer is incredible when I saw the finish date I didn't think it could work however every episode is just jaw dropping and I even wonder how can it be getting better I don't think i've ever been disappointed in an episode. I'm so sad this is coming to an end I hope Ga Ryung survives and the king dies even though his character has made a part of it I want a happy ending obviously but I still won't be happy as the show will finish. Great storyline I never write comments but I just had to for this one

I, too, am guilty of taking Ji Sung before all others (unless you put Lee Joon Gi and Lee Jong Suk or So Ji Sub etc in a show together in which case I will flip a coin, heads, which always wins, being whichever arrives soonest)... but felt a twinge of guilt as this is such a great show! Had they put it on W+The it may have fared better, but M-T have dominated with dramas this season. In any case, I am loving the story... The pace, the characters with their chemistry and real-feeling interactions, and a well-crafted story of depth=A+ from me. Talent over eye candy makes me really appreciate this gem (not that I don't like pretty faces, just that it would make this feel more staged, less real, if it was like Hwarang, Empress Mi, etc where beauty is just about everywhere).

Well that's probably the main part of this story, not a full romance drama. However I do appreciate the sweet loving scenes between Gil Dong and Ga Ryung. I hope we can see more affectionate scenes portrayed by Gil Dong towards Ga Ryung because Ga Ryung always seem to be the one taking initiatives. Lastly I hope Ga Ryung and Gil Dong do not die in this drama and live together happily ever after.

Every episode is moving towards a more thought-provoking and ever-thrilling experience just like my fave tv show 'Ju-mong'.

Just one question that feeds my curiousness: Will the fate of sweet, cute and dear lady Ga Ryung end-up in a tragic death? In the first episode, there was a snippet of flash of her being a captive of Mori and a flying arrow went through her heart coming her beloved Gil Dong. Ouch!! Hope that there could be a twist. ;-)

Finally, I do expect more from the Mighty Kid, not only in terms of his strength and agility, but, more on his cunningness. I presumed that every Mighty Kid has his level of weakness as well as strengths. May it be that he surpasses more than that of Mori. LOL.

But lowkey sad because I ship Gil Dong with Jang Nok-Soo, and I'm pretty sure they won't be together. Ugh....I always ship the second lead. OTL

Love them both, they have great chemistry and I'm so happy to see Yoon Gyun Sang play as the lead role in a historical drama. I loved him in Doctors. This drama is very different from all the other dramas, it's refreshing and the story line gets better every week. Can't wait to see next week episodes. Delia Mar 24 2017 12:43 am I really love this drama. The plot is great, detail and focus. Not boring at all. When compared to films of Hong Gil Dong old versions. I prefer this film (Rebel). This film does not focus on the love story of Hong Gil Dong, the film is more focused on the story of its history, political and social system of that time. And how finally, a thug named Hong Gil Dong said the rebels at that time. The love story in this film is just a sweetener, even less romantic scenes but it touching. Thanks to the Author, there is a good plot story.

All actors and actresses are amazing! They have do great work, play optimally. I like them! They're great teamwork. But, for me the most perfect cast is Yoon Kyun Sang. Two thumbs up for him! He live up to his role as Hong Gil Dong. And then, Yoon Sang Kyun could offset the acting of the senior actor, Kim Sang Jong (Ah Mogae). Kim Sang Jong is perfect too as Gil Dong's father. They are very suitable to be a father and son.

I like Chae Soo Bin too, her face is so cute and pretty. Soo Bin is perfect paired with Yoon Kyung Sang. Their chemistry in this drama is perfect and touching. I like them. I'm not his/her fans before i watch this drama. I like their acting in this drama. And they looks adorable together. So, i become their fans from now.They're very suitable to be a couple (see: "mygirlfriend" MV and KIA fc). Wish they will become a real couple in their real life. Hahaha. I ship them.

Wish the rating will increase.. This is great historical korean drama.

Hong Gil-dong character just does not stand out as a titular character. Should have casted a better actor for the lead role. Story is way too slow. Should not have that many episodes.

I really enjoyed every moment of his appearence in the drama. Now that he is gone, im looking forward for the main character Gil Dong to develop his character more. Cant wait for more of the story! And damn can we talk about Gil Dong friendzoning Ga Ryung!? Yooo, that was savage. I feel so bad for her. I can't wait for nobleman Jo's wife to die already and get what she deserves! I've never hated a character so much. Lol. Does anyone else feel like it's not gonna be a complete happy ending? The main characters will probably live but I feel like some of the other characters i.e. Gil Dong's brother Gil Hyun or some people from his group of friends will die in the end.. I just feel it and I'm already tearing up.

Hong Gil Dong, Amogae,and Hong Gil Hyun are so clever, it so nice watching them. Gil dong and family are not naive at all, so I don't need getting annoyed of anything in this drama.

So far I like Jang Nok Su's character here who actually love gil dong deeply in her heart but prefer to choose making her dream comes true. Despite of she will becomes villain but I admire her effort to be success and not be burden for gil dong.

I like ga ryung character too. She is cheeky and smart. Her sly cunning image is used for good thing here lol .... I hope she get male lead here. I shipped chae soo bin with lee yong in MDBC than the full of dillema-weak eunuch girl.

La Canadienne Mar 06 2017 9:53 am I have discovered Yoon Gyun-Sang in "doctors" and for some reason I did not connect, either with the guy or the role he was into - but here it feels like everything falls into place. He really fits into the role and this lovely actress Chae Soo-Bin is simply adorable here - she is always good, but especially into historical drama, it fits her even better. Congratulation the the whole crew - you do a fantastic job !

the most i like is Chae Soo Bin, her smile is cute, she is very adorable. She's good in acting, play Song Ga Ryung. Until ep.8, i don't know who is Ga Ryung exactly, maybe we'll know after ep.8. I like Ga Ryung with Gil Dong. They're funny and cute if they're together. Hahaha.. i don't like a flat relationship.

Waiting next episode! Can't wait Monday and Tuesday :)i falling in love with this drama!

She can play any type of role despite the fact that she doesn't have much experience. She caught my eye in sassy go go, Moonlight drawn by clouds and house of bluebird.

Lee Young-ae is good, too though she still has less air time because a younger actress played her role in first episodes.

but this is great as it started off with a great lead character which comes from neither a noble background or influential one. And how a commoner rose to face the king.

throughout the world great heroes have come from humble backgrounds which rose up and left their mark in history. It is not impossible.

Great nations were also formed becoming superpowers today, America China Russia and France. Because they disposed their kings and queens and nonsense like nobility. Korea would have also been great if they only not cling to a ridiculous idea of noble status, and that lowly people cannot produced great works.

Most great people in our history, are normal common people that revolutionised the world, i rarely heard a great inventor, revolutionarist, scientist, doctors, artist who cam from noble blood.

sophiagarcia/rannyfrancisco Feb 10 2017 6:41 am Watching 5 dramas which started almost at the same time. Voice, Defendant, Saimdang, Rebel Thief and Chief Kim. They all opened almost equally beautiful, exciting, superbly casted.

The father in this series, however, stands out. He and the second child ( young that he is ) give chilling performances.

The story flows smoothly. There are no unnecessary flashbacks which do not help much to regular viewers of a series.

We will have to see if the drama will maintain its quality.

Yoon Kyun Sang is cute in Six Flying Dragons and Doctors, I wonder how he will act a hard role like Hong Gil Dong, it maybe a difficult for him. Chae Soo Bin's acting is not bad, and I think this drama is ok with her.
