Shin Ha-Ru (Jung Yong-Hwa) works as a neuroscientist. He comes from a family that has had doctors for 3 generations and he is wealthy from inherited property. Shin Ha-Ru is a confident person who acts and speaks according to his convictions, but he has no mercy for people he views as scum.

Geum Myung-Se (Cha Tae-Hyun) works as a detective. He acts and speaks surly around people, which causes people unfamiliar with him to assume he might be a corrupt cop. In reality, Geum Myung-Se is a kind and righteous detective. He was also once married to Kim Mo-Ran (Ye Ji-Won). She has a particularly strong libido.

Shin Ha-Ru and Geum Myung-Se solve criminal cases together with help of Hypnotic Investigator Seol So-Jung (Kwak Sun-Young).

"Brain Works" takes over KBS2's Monday & Tuesday 21:50 time slot previously occupied by "Curtain Call" and followed by "Oasis" on March 6, 2023.
Ep.7 & 8 will not air during the lunar holiday weekend of January 23rd & 24th, 2023 and instead air on January 30th & 31st, 2023.

Kira Jan 09 2026 8:31 am I don’t understand one thing, why’s the team called “Neuroscientific Investigation Team” when they have not a single clue about the Brian or science??? Or even common behavioral issues,Without the dude from Brian Hub how could they have coped?? Just look at how hopeless they were in episode 10(Reset Man)….very disappointing and annoying characterization

ZANA Dec 05 2025 1:59 am I am enjoying the plot so far, and I want to see how the drama ends, but after ep3 I am hesitating. Jung Yonghwa doesn't quite feel like the right fit for the lead (wellhis acting here feels a bit awkward and mehhh..) Meanwhile, Cha Taehyun is absolutely rocking it and carrying the show..

The main theme of the series was the constant interaction between Jung Yong-Hwa and Cha Tae-Hyun, with Jung playing an intelligent suave neuroscientist with the brain of a psychopath and Cha being a bumbling down-to-earth detective who doesn’t seem too bright.

They are ably supported by the other 2 members of the team, Kwak Sun-Young and Woo Hyeon. By “ably supported”, it’s more of how the 4 roles gel together, rather than the ability of the 2 members to actually help solve any crimes, lol. I loved how the quiet nerdy Kwak transformed into a go-getting achiever after an accident to her head, and the little love romance between Kwak and Cha was hilarious and yet heartwarming.

It’s educational to hear Jung explaining in simple terms how the brains of the protagonists in the various cases functioned, and it raises a question as to whether people act according to how their brains tend to function or whether people can rise above the habitual thoughts and actions of their brains.

Jung gave us his conclusion in the final episode when he faced off against another psychopath in the form of Jeong Dong-Hwan, a serial killer in prison for life, when he showed that psychopaths like Jeong tend to blame their brains for how they behaved whereas others like Jung took personal responsibility by working to rise above the habitual tendencies of their brains.

I only started watching the series because of Jung Yong-Hwa, I liked his performance in “Sell Your Haunted House”. His performance in Brain Works is far better!

The chemistry between the leads were superb! The ending of the zombie man make me curious on what other syndromes there are in the world that we do not know of! Really really hope we get to see news on the new season sometime within 2024!❤️❤️

Go.M May 24 2024 4:21 am I really enjoyed this kdrama!! I was not sure at first but I would recommend giving it a try because you grow to love all the characters! I love the bromance in this drama lmaooo. It also have a very interesting plot and explains a lot about how the brain works! If you love detective shows with science and forensics kind of stuff, this drama is for you! There is also a lot of humor which made me laughs a lot! Overall great drama

Park Min May 01 2024 9:57 pm This drama was a constant coin toss for me, swinging between great and bad throughout, this included the story, characters, jokes, and, in particular, cases. Every case related to one or multiple subjects around neuroscience for the doctor to talk about, however, some subjects were poorly executed and questionable. These ones were totally forced and stretched thin just for the sake of including them. Other cases were actually interesting. The humor as well was a big hit or miss, especially with the male leads. The drama placed too much focus on the male leads while neglecting the remainder of the cast dynamic. On the other hand, the detective wife didn't fit quite well and it took until the last few episodes for her character to finally blend. The drama had its good moments with its witty humor but it lacked in many areas to be a solid drama.

I get to know medical jargons concerning the brain and its functions. The bromance is remarkable and cute, especially when they're bickering. This is a good drama for those who want to watch a crime drama seasoned with comedy genre.

ha ru Jun 23 2023 2:58 am 7/10 i guess? good plot story but i think it’s a little bit too slow. because every episode it will be a new cases. but, ha ru and myung se’s chemistry really awesome! same to the other actor and actress. hope there will be a second season but i don’t think so… recommended to who love crime and action series ❤️

Brain Almost Works Apr 26 2023 3:34 pm I'm such a sucker for these kind of series. I love everything about this, from the concept and storyline to the characters and their relationship. I think we can all agree that Det. Geum and Dr. Shin's chemistry is just undeniable. It seems too long since I last watched something with their kind of dynamic so it's very refreshing.

Been some time since I last saw a project of either CTH and JYH and seeing them both here casting in a genre exactly my type is a dream come true. The pacing of this drama is quite good too, I love me a gradual uncovering of secrets + the different cases they've handled really portrayed the disorders quite clearly and by using situations considered trendy and relatable nowadays, so that was plus one million points in my book. Kinda sad it ended, would definitely hope for a Season 2 although not going to expect much seeing that it ended on a good note already.

08 Jan 25 2023 6:32 pm I'm hooked!!! Can't wait for the next episodes. I should have watched it when it's complete so I can bingewatch it. I laughed a lot watching and I love what they are trying to teach us with each case. The characters' chemistry are just the right amount and very well played by the actors. I also like that the cases are not trying hard to go overboard to being gore but sticks with the over all concept. I'm also in for the bickering of Tae Hyun and Yong Hwa. Hahaha!
