Ae-Sun (IU) and Gwan-Sik (Park Bo-Gum) were born in Jeju, South Korea in the 1950's. Ae-Sun is a rebellious girl and a lover of books, but she is unable to attend school due to her poor family background. Under this circumstance, she never gives up on her dream of becoming a poet. She expresses her feelings freely without hiding anything. Gwan-Sik is a sincere and diligent young man. He doesn’t talk that much. Gwan-Sik loves only Ae-Sun and respects her.

It made me feel so many emotions. I had a good cry while watching. I was sobbing literally even at the thought of it. It is slow paced, so do not drop it if you find it not engaging enough. The story will gradually unfold and it will all make sense. Keep watching I promise it is worth all of your time. I have not commented before but I felt that I should recommend this kdrama to each and everyone of you. After this kdrama you will look your life from different lenses. You will appreciate your mundane life even more. You will love your parents and your siblings a little more. I hope everyone's days feel like spring from now on. What are you waiting for? one of the best drama of all time, i'm sure everyone would say that after they've watch it. literally this drama came out of nowhere just to make me shocked of everything it showed, define Perfection. it is this drama i can't get over it, help :(

i am deeply feel thankful to anyone who made this film and all of the actor, thank you for creating such story. it have one of the best writing in the history of the genre. Brouh i can't stop glazing, cause it deserved the glaze ^^ anyway, you Must watch it if you have free spare time, seriously.

everything just felt too real and the amount of emotion this drama have are insane, i wish i have much time and rewatching all of it's episode again and again. i would recommend this drama to anyone, cause it have all that it needed to fit for every genre, every person.

an underdog, underrated masterpiece that you'll always felt nostalgic after you watch it.

Once again, IU shows how great she is at choosing her projects. Park Bo-gum was amazing—his best character so far. Every time I saw his face, I cried. I cried in every episode. It was such an intense experience that I’m recommending When Life Gives You Tangerine to everyone. It’s not only the best drama of the year; it’s one of the best dramas of all time.

I hated this drama. Yes, the 1st one or two episodes were not easy to watch for me. Maybe it is because I'm watching from 8000 km away, maybe because I don't know so many details about South Korea, especially from back then. I always kept asking myself "was it really like this on Jeju-do?".

The drama developed. The characters developed. They age. Everything was made with so much love for details, camera work and dramatic elements. All the actors and people behind the camera were doing such a fantastic job that this drama became one of the "bestest" I've ever watched until now.

I can not omit to say "of course it is like this, it is fiction, the writer wanted it to be like this". True, but I can also say that it could be a glimpse into a parallel universe where all of this really happened.

I want to mention that placing all these historical elements that happened in South Korea and the rest of the world, and also factual things about haenyeo and them learning to read and write late in their lives, all over the drama is great work!

For me it was a little puzzling that IU plays 2 characters, now and then, but that might just be me :)

Be warned: I am sure this drama Will make you shed tears more than once! I usually don't have wet eyes that easily, but well ... I've watched this drama ... !

Afolabi Tomisin Mercy Sep 01 2025 3:38 pm This is a masterpiece indeed…I love every bit of it …from the childhood Ae sun to the old Ae sun..every character did so well..but then this drama is so emotional…I cried in every episode…it was so relatable..IU is such an amazing actress to portray the role of a mother when she has never gave birth to a child and made it look so realistic ,that shows how talented she is..I’ve always love her and I love her even more after completing the drama…and my darling Park Bo gum…like seriously!! I really can’t believe it…He was so amazing in the show..this is my best drama of his…..He gave his wife nothing but love cus he really has nothing..he loved her so much..but life was so cruel to them..on top of being poor they still loose one of the child and he wailed that day …it was so painful to watch him…in conclusion..I’m so happy and contented that this drama received the best drama award cus y not.??? Every character has done so well including those people that work behind the scenes…You did creat a masterpiece most especially IU and Park Bo gum …I will be expecting more of your works!!

It’s not just for one age group — kids, parents, and even grandparents can all take something meaningful from it. The story is truly unique — quiet, emotional, and full of heart. It shows the ups and downs of life, love, and family in such a real way. For me, it made me reflect on how I can be a better son and husband. And honestly, the plot is so special and layered that it’s worth watching more than once. Every rewatch brings out new feelings and lessons. It’s the kind of drama that really stays with you. This is the best and most meaningful korean drama I ever watched in my life thus far.

I don't really like watching melodramas because I tend to carry the stories even after some time and I hate feeling down (coming from someone whose been through and possibly still in depression.) I haven't cried like this in a drama ever (way more than I felt down after watching Goblin). But the story pulls you in because of how much relatable it is and how the actors carried the emotions. A lot of scenes are very painful and emotional and the actors were so great. This is definitely one of the greatest dramas I've seen.

The costumes and settings seemed sensitively and accurately depicted. Haven’t cried this much though since Goblin days. However, there was so much warmth and hope behind each episode I couldn’t stop watching. IU and Park Bo Gum were truly magnificent. For me, this will be an absolute classic and will surely stand the test of time as a genuine treasure of a drama showing Korean culture and historic hurdles in a brutal yet poignant manner. It’s a masterpiece.

dramalover Apr 28 2025 5:14 am explanation for those who haven't watched it & SPOILER : if any person had problem with simps-like male who follows & listens to the girl plus having lots of weak useless characters , or anyone who has not experienced hardships related to money or parent-children issues, and also those who hate dramas where scenes goes back & forth between past - present , then this drama is Not for you. it's about a life of a girl , whether we can relate to or not , from childhood with her mother and then all the way till she has grandchildren. as the drama goes on. that girl's daughter narration become more & more the main narrator of the story as she is similar in personality to her mother to make it a continuous journey tale from generation to generation.

The writers have given the actors and actresses lines that are full of Truth and wisdom. All of the character actors and Main leads did a stellar job. IU was fantastic. I cried, I laughed. Many Bittersweet and some beautiful memories from my own life were evoked from this series. At my age, 82, I appreciate it all the stages of life portrayed here. Congratulations to all involved in making this series so beautiful.

Free Bird Apr 17 2025 8:10 pm I’m up to episode 12 now and this is a really good show But… It’s got some happy parts in it but it seems to have way more sad parts in it. It has some funny moments, but it seems like it’s mostly depressing. They must have used a five gallon bucket of that stuff that makes the actors cry tears. I was so looking forward to binging on this show but now that it’s 2/3 over I feel like I’ll just be glad when it’s finished. The actors are fantastic and the scenes are very beautiful. It just seems like such a sad story overall. Oh, and I know it’s necessary to jump around in time to tell the story but sometimes it’s confusing. And who is narrating anyway the mother, the daughter, the grandchild sometimes I’m not sure. Anyways, I’m gonna need to watch a comedy next to get over this one

eri Apr 15 2025 6:07 pm Before I was so scared to watch K-dramas when I got in a relationship because of how unrealistic love is being portrayed sometimes. But this one is different. It feels raw, it feels realistic, it feels relatable, it feels like as if I’m watching myself through Ae-sun.

So scared about how love is shown in K-dramas but the moment I started watching and saw how Aesun and Gwansik went through everything together, I cried my eyes out realizing I have my very own Gwansik. A friend told me to watch this series because she kept on saying that Aesun and Gwansik is very similar to me and my husband.

I’m so grateful for this series because it made me appreciate all the small things my husband does for me that I sometimes overlook or take for granted. Life is hard and will be a lot harder as we grow old but seeing how Aesun and Gwansik grew old together, it made me feel at ease and excited on what the future holds for me and my husband. Seeing the old them is like having a glimpse of me and my husband after some years. I’m so lucky to have a husband as loving as Gwansik.

Maneju Apr 06 2025 8:33 am Lovely portrayal of family. This drama hits close to home as a daughter who was loved by her father and loved her father. I found myself crying a lot especially Episodes 14 through to 16, I relieved the memories of my dad when he was sick and till he passed and knowing that I wouldn't be able to do a lot of things that I would have wanted to give him but I'm glad I was able to do the simplest things for him. I miss him every day but i miss him a lot more today watching the last episode of the drama. Continue to rest in peace dad

The way they showed us the lives of three generations (and even more) and how each of their struggles was portrayed from their point of view was amazing! 9/10 croakers for this k-drama?

MelissaB Apr 05 2025 10:03 pm Many good points about this drama. I love IU and Park BoGum, just to make it clear. The acting was excellent, the cinematography and sets were terrific. The story itself is beautiful. But the plot was just not coherent. Events, characters, time and space, jumped all over the place like a carnival wild ride. And who was Chloe H Lee, the editor, and why did she look just like Aesun's mother? I think this drama needed 20 episodes and tried to squeeze everything into 16 without total success.

I love how they played their character so much better.

Rob Apr 04 2025 9:52 pm Well, that was a ride ;-). Fantastic Kdrama. I was enthralled from the starting episode. Largely due to the initial impact of the settings. Whoever was responsible for the movie setting/backdrop did an absolutely phenomenal job. My wife grew up in the era the movie covered and I couldn't help wonder how she what she would have thought about the settings. The cast was amazing and did an amazing job. With one exception, there was absolutely no reason to have IU play a dual role and because of that the highest rating I could give is a 9. It was confusing, disconcerting, and didn't need to be cast that way. Nonetheless I did give the 9. It was a roller coaster of ups and downs, just like life really is. Honestly, I could only skim the last episode because as I had the God given responsibility, love, and to be the caretaker seeing my wife cross that final divide with dementia. Moon So-Ri looked too much like my wife in her final years that I simply had to glide over the final episode being all to familiar with life's conclusion. But it still was simply a fantastic series to behold.

I also don't understand why they never tell from gwansik's point of view. for example when he was in school, how he could become an athlete or how he worked and fished. I waited but there was never any. only the woman's point of view. even though men have their own conflicts not only women.

ciska Apr 01 2025 8:48 am a beautiful, beautiful story. memerizing. each episode brings you to tears, but at the same time brings happiness. a story of life, family, love, aspirations - you name it. we can all relate to it as it is a piece of our lifes. i did not want to binge watch, instead, watching one episode daily as i did not want to finish the drama quickly. i wanted to savour it, to enjoy each piece - not wanting it to end. kudos to the scriptwriter, the producer and of course, the actors. the actors each played their roles wonderfully, bringing their characters to life. last time I enjoyed a drama this well as Reply 1988. this LGYT is an epic! I don't want to stop watching! Please, please, please write another good story like this one.

This drama made me cry so much, each and every episode is a gem, if you want a slice of life drama this is the one you should look forward, its so realistic that whatever bad or good happens to the character it feels personal, which means the cast gave all their what the drama wanted and the story, what a story really this drama is one of kind and it stays always near to my heart, so please do watch this drama.

Val Mar 30 2025 10:17 pm This has officially dethroned 2521 as the drama that has made me cry the most Ever in my life. This is a “watch one at a time” kind of drama. Made the mistake of watching episodes 1-3 on a row and felt like I would pass out from crying, but then I watched 12-13 and it was worse, and Then again 15-16 back to back and when I tell you I didn’t just cry, I bawled my eyes out, I wailed, I was hyperventilating, I literally felt like I was gonna die from crying. Anyways, all that to say this was beautifully written. There were some very annoying characters but the main story of Aesun and Gwangsik was just beautiful.

Chin P. Mar 30 2025 1:16 am This drama is such a... masterpiece. I cried every episode, and I cried buckets at the last two episodes. This drama made my cry so much, but it didn't leave me feeling devastated every time. Instead, each tear healed so many things in my heart. It also made me appreciate my parents, late grand and great grandparents even more. I've always imagined how their lives were, but this drama gave me new perspectives that made me respect them more.

The storytelling is amazing, and I think this drama is truly the best among all dramas I've watched for years. The casting is amazing! I've always been a fan of IU, but she did such an extraordinary job portraying the emotions of the two characters she portrayed. The rest of the actors/actresses did equally amazing delivering their characters too. They're all great, and all I wish for everyone involved in this drama is to win awards they deserve.

I've never felt this satisfied watching a drama's ending for years too. Overall, apart from swollen eyes for weeks, this drama left me feeling fulfilled, inspired and healed as if I read the best novel in my life. ;---; <3

This is a story about life of ordinary people from generations . This is in a way more women focused but not entirely . Its so interesting to see how each character mature with time. No one is really a villain . This teaches us so much life lessons . Anyone is not perfect arguments between family is inevitable , but we really love eachother . I really love how this drama protray generations of love from grear grand parents to kids.The main couple's love tthroughout ,growing up together , the commintment,respect ,love for eachother is ppriceless . Such a love is so rare. Writer is amazing . Casting is so good . Specially I didnt see 2 seperate women in Aesun it was like the same women iu & soori nailed it. Although initially I didnt feel both gwanshik's young & old as same person( bogum & haejoon were amazing in both, but later they were also like one person , well although with makeup in some parts HaeJoon's youthful looks could not be hidden . . .

The drama made by the writer is extraordinarily cool, plus all the staff and directors who make this drama better.The plot and cast in this drama are very cool. They managed to play a great character. Oh God, this drama really touches my heart and soul.

But the actor Gwan-sik wants the young or adult version to be the best. He successfully played the character as a good husband and father. He is very cool. Many want a figure like Gwan-sik in real life. I hope.

After that, IU. He plays a lot of roles here. And he successfully brought all the roles perfectly.

I really hope this drama will get a big award. But here I am very sad. Good drama in this month is no longer there.

And this is not only a love story being told, but also a story of a women, a mother, a father, a child, a family. And did not expect I would cry so much to this drama, like fore real, literally I cried on each episode! So, if you want to watch this, don't forget to prepare tissue!!!

Actually, I'd never watched IU's dramas before, this is the first drama I watched with her in it. And I actually kinda skeptical when it comes to idol-actors. But, oh my god she's Fantastic, she's a phenomenal actor. She's incredible as a singer and she's also great at acting, what can't she do really?

In some ways this drama reminded me of old classic family dramas in Korea in its style of writing and its ambiance. I think the writer was paying homage to them.

It’s heartbreaking to see Ae Soon, Gwan Sik, and the others struggle. The way Gwan Sik loves Ae Soon and her children is so touching. Likewise, Ae Soon never demands anything from him and always supports him. They complete each other and are lucky to have one another. Their story feels so real and meaningful, making me believe that true love is all about sincerity, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion through every hardship, proving that love transcends all obstacles and lasts forever.

I think so it ought to get many Daesang awards, e.g. scriptwriter, directing, IU, Park Bo Gum and the hanyeo group’s actresses together. These actresses are Cha Mi-Kyung, Lee Soo-Mi, Baek Ji-Won, Jeon Young, Jung Eun-Kyung also had very hard tasks, roles.

Looking forward to the very last volume this series is amazing and special in every way I love the aunties they remind me of my own aunties during family gathering and see them cooking up a storm in the kitchen especially with the cigarettes and stuff alot of memories were flooding in. Especially my uncles who loved fishing and hunting etc. So much memories.

Watching all the lovey-dovey scenes throughout the series itself is so funny. The romance in the series is very strong indeed looking forward to the last volume.

The son’s mom was living her life through her son. It was the same. The FIL said it at the meeting between families. Now his wife ‘won’t have to be the one to ladle the soup’. As if he contributed to her new lady of leisure status. I suppose he did as they made a baby boy who grew up to complete the social contract that was Korea, have a boy so you will have a DIL to serve you after you served us. If the world was unfair to her mom, It was also unfair to his mom. The girl mom got satisfaction early in seeing her get to do things she could not. The boy mom could not get ‘satisfaction’ until her son married, and her husband retired with the son supporting them. All that money put into him paying off. The son is the social security of the time. And inflation on steroids. Even if they saved and relied on themselves no way they could support themselves through old age. There was no National Pension Service in Korea until 1987. That was when people started contributing to it. The parents generation most didn’t have high school. Their kids would have university. It was that way in the U.S., a generation put the kids through that didn’t have the option themselves. Even if the girl had education she would not be employed by a company or have a variety of job choices. She would have a few ways to make a living. They would be expected to quit upon marriage or babies. Marriage is the joining of families not two people in that place and in that time.

For another life isn’t fair watch or read Ji Young born 1982. Honestly the world sucked for her mom. Her mom didn’t have a high school diploma. Had to quit school to work in a factory to earn money to send her brothers. High school cost money back then. It’s only recently it’s free. Her mom served her MIL. Her mom aborted her 3rd baby cause it was girl. But had to keep going for a boy. Had to make it fair for her girls. Had to keep her husband from making them broke with co-signing and investments that didn’t pan out but ran porridge shop. Knew when to buy a new apartment. But her daughter had university, marriage to a person entirely of her choosing, a job not of the three D’s, a baby, no MIL living with her telling her to have a son for several years, a husband who cared about her and took on child care roles and free of dictatorships during her adult life. She had job opportunities, after leading for maternity leave. Her boss a woman. But somehow this a problem. She had it was better than mom.

Or read Pachinko. The grandparents generation. They had occupation. Then were adults through the wars. Her mother told her it was entirely her responsibility to see to her family. To serve the in-laws and give them no reason to criticize. To be ‘selfless’ with her husband in all stages of pregnancy. She could not read or write. Her parents could not agree, her father wanted school for her. Her choices were being kept woman in shame that would extend to her son, suicide, running away and probably dying or marrying and leaving. Marrying always meant leaving the area you grew up. The joining the husbands family was very real not just symbolic. You left your home town. And she ended up having to convert. Her late father was distrustful of Christians. And she had to do it all while keeping the ego of her husband and her BIL. And obey her SIL. She could have easily been put out and they would have kept the baby. He first suggested giving the baby to his brother and wife. The workers of her mother’s guest house none of them would be able to marry, until the world changed. She was hardly marriageable because of her father being gone, his disability, their economics. Her getting pregnant saved her the fate of the female workers at her mothers inn. Some were tricked and some were just decided you will get on the truck and are to work at ‘a factory’, that was not factory work…

Park Bo-Gum and IU characters so so brilliantly played and their story of pure love and care for each other whilst enduring hardships and such a heart reaching loss could easily have been extended into further series before leaping into adulthood so abruptly. I know it's the daughter telling the story but I am missing PBG and IU 's further development and growth that has clearly formed their adult characters. PBG's portrayal of his character is brilliant, they way he continues to look like a stunned mullet hopelessly on love with IT'S character.

There is no boredom while watching. My feelings mixed up but I enjoyed it. Acting all the actors in this drama is very good. Nothing is destructive. Moreover, the scene where Yeongbeom's mother continues to make fun of Geum-young, wow, my taste I want to pull her hair so annoyed I see it That means he successfully brought the character of Narissistic Mother. Ohh, I am afraid that in the real world there really is a mother like that? Moreover, I was sorry when his son kept screaming and wanted to stop The mother's sharp words but ignored. From the drama Misaeng(2014),Signal(2016),My Mister(2018), Arthdal Chronicles(2019) and this drama.The directing style is magnificent. Kudos to writer for this drama. The plot and storylines is superb. The casting line is very good. Actor’s and actress’s is delivered the emotions to audience. The OST also stunning. Retro/classical OST sounds like is very suitable. Overalls this Drama is masterpiece. Looking forward to achieve many awards this year for this Drama “ Thank You for Your Hard Work/ When Life gives You Tangerines”.

I love the story revolving around aesun, gwansik anf geum myeong. And i think people shd really stop focussing on geum myeong’s love life…cause that’s not the focus of this show at all. There’s soooo much more to it. Everyone wants her to end up with yb cause it’s her first love, but not everyone gets to marry their first love. And this is reality. Chungseob intrigues me and i wanna know more how they fall in love (if the fall in love)

The way they developed the love story and the family aspect, from when IU and Park Bo Gum oppa cute were kids to their adulthood, was amazing. I got so hooked—laughing, crying, and stuck in the story because of their incredible acting. Everyone was great. Then, the new generation of IU's family came in, the characters changed, and there was a twist. It was a family and love story that truly reflects real life. Eventually, a military man Lee Jun Young oppa cute entered her life, and he made her feel giddy, but their love didn't work out because the guy lacked the courage. Then Kim Heon So oppa handsome cute came in and also made everyone swoon. I hope they focus more on their love story... not filled with struggles anymore, but with happiness and full of love until they get married. It's so heartwarming. Can you make the story long?

Families were torn apart by economic poverty and then the splitting up of the country North vs. South disrupted their lives even more. Many starved to death, lost their homes. It was a different world from South Korea the way it is today. Look at vintage photos of Korean villages and cities in the 195O's vs 1990's. Amazing. It really wasn't until the 197O's that South Korea began to look industrialized. This is the economic and social backdrop of this drama's story.

Luise Mar 14 2025 11:34 pm I got goosebumps when IU and Park Bo Gum kissed each other, even though it was just a slight kiss, and I giggled. I cried a lot when their youngest son died. The story was really great, and the cast was amazing. IU and Park Bo Gum are such great actors. I also loved seeing the couple as they grew older, and their sweetness never faded away. I hope that in the next generation, IU’s partner will still be Park Bo Gum in the end. Highly recommended. #1

The drama has simple storyline but it has a lot of emotions in each part. You can feel both leads' mixed up emotions, from sweetness and compassion to despair and distress.

And there me Immediately interested in watching it. From the beginning to EPS 4 is not boring at all. Full of emotion, sweet and also funny. Park Bogum and IU acting is very good. Feel is very pronounced. I Hope there is no painful ending because I like the flow of this drama. Indeed, the writer is from When The Camellia Blooms and Fight for My Way. Already sure it will be successful too. So far it's good. Hopefully, even if there is a conflict that does not smell loss.

Without a doubt it’s a treasure in this day and age. It’s one year in a making and another year in post production. IU and Bogummy are the perfect fit and upheld their acting. Each episodes gave different vibes. We can all relate whether thru family, situation, or generation we are in. When life gives you tangerine will go down in history and be remembered as one of the best Drama. Four episodes in we are already wanting for more. Cant wait for March 14 for Volume 2.

I hope it’s about the child, with a different character. IU will work hard in her career, and Park Bo Gum’s character will be wealthy, a CEO. However, IU won't let herself be overshadowed by him because she doesn't want her past struggles to affect her future. Can't wait for the next episode. Exciting..great drama.

The casting, the make ups of the actors/actresses (legit tone of skin living near the sea compare to a lot of dramas that was set on an island). Every role portrayed by great actresses and actors, even the extras were great. I am thankful and grateful to writer-nim and director-nim, thank you for this masterpiece. Finally, a drama worth watching from every seconds of it.

It's about the love of a parent, the love of a friend, and seemingly a love from someone who became a friend long ago, no matter what happens through hardship and ease. Both of them come from humble beginnings and know what needs to be done. The chemistry between IU and Park Bo Gum is great; Both so pretty, they seem like teenagers who never age. I got butterflies when they shared a slight kiss, but I would love also someone for IU to be her partner someday—they look perfect together lol. One of the BTS members. All the cast members are great, and everyone is professional, even the kids. IU’s acting is amazing; everything is in her, and the same goes for Park Bo Gum. Highly recommended to watch. Great director too.

IU is a singer-songwriter and Ae-Soon is a poet, meanwhile Park Bo Gum is a diligent and sincere man and his character Gwan Sik is also the same!
