Because of her father's sudden death, Lee Soon-Shin (IU) and her mother fall in trouble. They both attempt to find happiness, while Lee Soon-Shin falls in love.

Meanwhile Shin Joon-Ho (Cho Jung-Seok) is the president of an entertainment management company. He is over confident, arrogant and cold-blooded. By meeting Lee Soon-Shin, he realizes the meaning of true success and also changes.

Jung-Ae (Ko Du-Shim) has three daughters: Hye-Shin (Son Tae-Young), Yoo-Shin (Yoo In-Na) and Soon-Shin (IU). Hye-Shin, the oldest daughter, married a competent man and has a daughter. She has just arrived back from Hong Kong with her daughter, but without her husband. Yoo-Shin, the middle daughter, looks down upon younger sister Soon-Shin. Meanwhile, Soon-Shin tries to hold a steady job, but keeps failing. She is adopted, but unaware of that fact.

One day, Soon-Shin gets a temporary part-time job at a hotel. If she does well she can get a permanent position. On the first day of her new job, Soon-Shin works with actress Song Mi-Ryung's (Lee Mi-Sook) photo book release event at the hotel. Joon-Ho (Jo Jung-Suk), who is the president of an entertainment company, attends the event. Joon-Ho meets his ex-girlfriend Yeon-A (Kim Yoon-Seo) there, whom he still hasn't gotten over.

Soon-Shin and entertainment company president Joon-Ho then physically bump into each other. Joon-Ho becomes covered with the food that Soon-Shin was serving. He becomes so angry that he asks the hotel manager to fire Soon-Shin, even though she begs him not to.

On the way home, Soon-Shin meets a man who introduces himself as a president of an entertainment company. He tells Soon-Shin that she has the looks to become a talent and gives her his name card. Soon-Shin goes back home excited. Her mother has prepared a festive dinner to celebrate Hye-Shin's return from Hong Kong. During dinner, Soon-Shin tells everyone that she was scouted on the street, but middle sister Yoo-Shin again acts condescending towards her. Soon-Shin bursts into anger. Even though her family laughs at her and thinks it's ridiculous, her mother Jung-Ae thinks differently.

kpopstan Aug 17 2023 6:14 pm Watching dramas from a few years ago will make you appreciate K-Drama more. Sure this drama is very long. The plot is perfectly crafted and as an avid viewer of TV series from different countries, this is by far one of the best I have seen. If I were to compare this to TV drama series from the Philippines, some Philippine series are way too dragging that you will lose interest in continuing to watch the show. I am not saying all Philippine TV series are bad because there are also some dramas from that country that are good. But if I compare this series to the current K-drama series I have watched, I'd say that there really is a big difference especially with the acting style. If you just started watching K-dramas from year 2020 onwards and you keep on commenting how the acting from dramas of previous years are "over acting", I suggest you guys think again. I still love watching this series. I'd rather watch this kind of series no matter how many episodes it has rather than watch a type of drama series that only adds more episodes just because of the viewers and turns out the drama does not have any substance.

byul Oct 23 2022 4:14 am Look people, this drama aired in 2013 Of Course it's going to be cliche if you watch it now. Don't expect that a 9 yr old drama is going to be the same with the dramas now. That's why if you suddenly decide to watch old dramas, expect the clichés and stereotypes that we've been trying to overcome for years (since most is rooted from societal issues). Most acting techniques really did start with being "too much" to be "dramatic" but a lot has changed and progressed. I think seeing that contrast, albeit frustrating, is also a sign of the times yknow.

Kang Sol C Aug 09 2021 2:33 am It's your good typical cliche drama that is very draggy, long, has a lot of unnecessary scenes and and the tiresome conflict on repeat. It is no doubt that it had high ratings around it's time because that's what people liked back then. If you watch this today (2021), it's really daaaaamn long and very boring at times. Compared to very innovative and well made dramas today, you could really distinguish the big difference well duh hahaha but I actually enjoy watching it, because well it's IU and Jo jungsuk. And it's been so long since I last watched a long drama that's cliche. I think what made me continue watching is because of the other characters and other fun side story. I really like younghoon (the manager), what contagious smile. And jinuk (the baker), glad to know he won an award for his role. And daaaaamn, I'm waiting for sunsin to officially debut as an actress.

And yes, it's damn 50 episodes with 1 hr each. My secret? I watch it on 2x speed and fast forward the grandma scenes and other draggy dialogues/conversations. And ofcourse, I watch the restaurant manager's scene on a normal speed. ???

Darwin Apr 18 2020 12:30 pm I went into this thinking it was going to be "Lee Soon-Shin and her road to fame" or something. 30 episodes in and she basically haven't even started her "career" yet. The story is full of full grown adults acting like uppity teenagers: kicking people when they're down because their feelings are "hurt", blaming victims because "yOu dOn't uNderStand wHat i'M gOinG tHroUgh~~". Probably 80% of the story is them blowing up issues and generally being assholes. I waded through 50 episodes of that, which honestly just made me thoroughly numb to whatever plight they're having at any particular moment. It's not all bad though: the main pairing is very solid and cute af, and it's worth fast fowarding all those unpleasant stuff to get to their cute and satisfying bits in the story.

I love IU and Jo Jung Suk but the character they portrayed is very weak and irritating. comparing from all the 50 episodes that i had watched... honestly i skipped a lot.. fast forward the scenes so many times.

now i know why i cannot like Lee Ji Hoon :) he is annoying. I've watched him in few dramas but he's personality (on screen) is irritating. 8/10

koviak Jan 04 2016 9:01 pm I was interested in seeing this for a long time due to IU, but really, the show got on my nerves. Its not just this show, its most Korean drama. Basically, its the writing. These script writers are coming up with straight bullshit. And really it comes to a point, rather soon in the show, that Im reacting to the most improbable crap that the writers make up, rather than any human drama that (should) exist. For example, about her birth mother and her real mother. A birth mother coming back into your life after 18 years or so and demanding she be acknowledged as a mom, that she will pay the real mom some recompense for raising her daughter all these years, and being pissed that it doesn't go according to her plan, is ridiculous. No woman would believe she has any right to such a child that she willingly gave up for her own selfish reasons. The characters are selfish. But not a "real" selfish; it some parody of it that the writers create, that doesnt exist in reality, drawing in all their teenie bopper fans on the forums, which they then read to adjust their script accordingly. There is much more minutiae in that story as well as the whole show that can be mentioned. Suffice to say, that rather than writing compelling drama, they're catering to fans who want to see a certain actor more, or wish that some pairing happens, etc. The show is 50 episodes long for Christsake. It could have easily be cut in half and be much more presentable. So while my mom watches it, I stopped. If you want your emotional chain to be jerked by scriptwriters halfhazardly creating dialogue that reduces each character to some lowest common denominator among people, then by all means. But really, it becomes ridiculous. It's also not alone in that respect, however.

Her acting skills are totally in a new level. This will be aired in 2016 here philippines. Looking forward. Highly recommended guys. Do watch. I love how it ends.

KC Aug 25 2015 10:21 pm I'm on episode 30 and I agree with previous post that this drama should be called lee soon shin's mothers (lol). I have skipped many scenes (mostly the ones with the mothers and grandmother in it) coz I think they are so annoying (esp. the granny). The producer should have cut the drama short to make it more interesting.

50 episodes are too long for this kind of plot. I previously watched 51-episode Empress Ki without skipping any scene at all.

The reason I watch this drama is because of the high rating but now I think the drama's popularity is because the viewers like IU.

Canyu's mother's hostility to canyu's girl friend isna wonder who dares to marry. had I been the director she gets a nasty daughter in law. It is not her fault *SPOILER ALERT* that she was born and that actress mother left her to her father, because she knew him at that time. The adoption mother of lee soon shin keeps thinking he had an affair but it is totally not true. Her real father is not even him...(the dad that dies)

And her younger sister who always play the victim and is conniving in every drama besides Queen In SuHyoong or smth like that. It was the only drama I liked with her inside it.

Only the big sister can give her a break.

alex Mar 17 2015 2:48 am Only one i liked in this drama is IU. She got powerful smile. But her nose very small her face which makes it kinda weird face. She is cute. But her acting is very good when she is happy. She lights up.Even when she is sad , she still cute. May be this role is ideal for her because not even one second i cringe. 99% of kdrama i cringe at lead actor and actress. I really do not like yoo in na. I complete fastforwared everyone scene except IU. I do not even know IU until i watched this drama. I hope she get many roles.

alex Mar 17 2015 2:40 am I just finished watching this show. IU acting is phenomenal. She is cute but she stand out tall among all actors by her performance. you can't take eye of her. Lead actor awkward romance was also good. But Kdrama villains have unique skill that normal human do not posses. Ability con hero/heroine and his/her family again and again like rag doll. They can even con a rock if they want. Its super duper power that can be used again and never get empty even on same person.

currently am on episode 28. it's an interesting storyline.

my criticisms:

 - all of the characters seem to think that finding out that one is adopted and one's actual mother is a famous celebrity is somehow basically negative. this doesn't make any sense to me. if you found out that you were closely related to Nicole Kidman, I think the vast majority of people would consider this in a fairly positive light.

- also, at some point, Soon Shin's mother (the one that raised her) tries to discourage her daughter from continuing her acting. to me this seemed like she was sabotaging her daughter's once in a lifetime opportunity. the only alternative to this was basically low paying job as a temp or an entry level worker. by sabotaging her daughter's chances, she had basically condemned her to a life with a very low ceiling. this seemed beyond the pale to me and frankly unforgivable.

- also, the storyline basically casts the birth mother in a fairly negative light, like giving up her daughter for adoption was a nearly unforgivable crime. I beg to differ. If a woman is unable either emotionally or financially to provide for her child, giving up the child for adoption would actually be preferable to trying to go it alone under fairly adverse circumstances.

these criticisms notwithstanding, the drama is enjoyable and i will most likely finish watch it.

Yes there is a lot of family drama, and I agree that the granny needs to stuff her pie hole... but it's not like it's boring....it's actually more realistic in the "romantic" sense because relationships don't happen as fast as they portray it in regular k-dramas. You all need to lighten up on IU! I have found her to be just as good as other actresses such as Yoon Eun Hye, Park Shin Hye, and Goo Hye Sun...

Cho Jung Seok really replied different character from The King 2 Hearts. but for the first, IU is my reason why i watched this drama. Also, I really enjoy watched Yoo In Na act!. When Iu got bad rumor Yoo In Na is like her older sister, not just in the drama only! ;) And, Iu still could very good acted indeed really she got really stress becoz that bad rumor. Well, this drama really could make me enjoy! congratulation! :)

Where the scene that Junho going to propose Sunsin? I don't understand why is there so much pain and suffering in Sunsin family? tease Feb 05 2014 1:52 am I'm at episode 39 and why I haven't dropped this drama, yet, is beyond me. I lost interest in it at about episode 18. I think there are four reasons why I'm still watching: Son Tae-Young, Yoo In-Na, Lee Mi-Sook and Jung Woo. Every other actor, female or male are just terrible. IU is pretty and all, but she deserves much better in terms of scripts and leading man. The main reason for my lost interest, is the pathetic Cho Jung-Seok. He has no charisma or personality whatsoever, he is not leading man material. Of course the script writer didn't help much, his scenes with IU are purely infantile. Last five or six episodes, I found myself fast-forwarding their scenes together. I guess IU's popularity explains the high ratings, because I don't see anything else to justify them. I hope to see IU in many more, better, dramas with better suited partners. She's still very young, pretty and deserving of better scripts.

Tarleton Oct 16 2013 4:03 pm I enjoyed nearly every character in this drama, but never was able to change my thoughts on the grandmother, who was a complete witch over the entire run of 50 episodes. Lots of love and understanding to go around and this spiteful, unlikable elder pretty much ruined everyone's day, every day, I was so proud of the little girl when she finally told this old bat to lay off of her mom. One's "golden years" should not be spent making yourself, and all of your grand-kid's lives miserable from minute to minute. A completely intolerable character. Nearly as annoying was 'Yoo-shin's' (Yoo In-na) mother-in-law. If dad wasn't such a hen-pecked wimp, he would have set her straight about two episodes into the run. I enjoyed watching all of the "good guys" though. The three Lee sisters are all beautiful and Lee Mi-sook remains the consummate, professional actress and is always the most beautiful female in the room...

After more than 25 episodes Lee Soon -Shin appears to become rather two dimensional as a main character -- the resonance in the way she articulates isn't very compelling anymore. You might wonder if she could outgrow her adolescence and act more like a young woman who understands the world around her and navigates accordingly Sim Mak-Rye and Seo Jin-Wook are really great actors. Choi Yeon-A is so sexy -- hard to imagine her as a villain and we will never know what happened to her in the end since the production costs probably axed further episodes...(lol) Have to try soju one of these days (since everyone is constantly drinking this liquor of choice?!) I see some messages from non-Koreans, I think they to consider how much this must effect drama writers. However, that said, I too agree that not of enough of main characters. Also, too many flashbacks take up space for character development & story line explanation. I agree that too many plots the same. I mentioned this to someone that said why didn't I try to come up with a new plot, so I , but don't know who to submit it too. Oh well, just like previous comments, this is just my view.

But the relationship of LSS and Joon Ho was kinda short for a 50 ep drama. Yes, its a family drama but they should at least show more LSS and joon ho scenes and the PROPOSAL :(, too bad.

I look forward to all her scenes in this drama. But, I want to add that I love all the other actors as well. A great drama that I already miss as I near the end (6 more episodes for me). I only hope that KBS continues to keep up it's high level of weekend prime time dramas. Congrats to all.

As many have said, it was somewhat formulaic and got a little boring in the middle. There were a couple of things that were very different, however, which I really liked about it. The newlyweds actually acted like newlyweds. They couldn't keep their hands off each other and were always touching, holding hands, etc. It was cute to see them leave for work each day. Soon Shin and Joon-Ho were really cute in the few episodes where they were a couple. They expressed emotion and affection toward each other that it sadly missing in most kdramas. I was left wanting a whole lot more of their relationship to be shown. The imbalance between the mama-drama and the romance was too great. I was pleased that they didn't go down that all-too-familiar track of men fighting over the girl. Lee Ji-Hoon was far too underused, but I'm glad he didn't get into the struggle over Soon-Shin. All said, I enjoyed the drama. The ensemble cast was great. Lee Mi-Sook is an amazing actress, with great range. CJS is adorable. He was the main attraction for me after watching King2Hearts, in which he was my favorite character. So watch this drama for a light touch (in spite of all the grief) or not. You won't be missing much except a diversion from real life.

I initially started watching this drama because I wanted to see Jung Seok in a leading role and was a tiny bit disappointed when his romance was abbreviated. And what's with Mi Ryung not taking responsibility in the end?

The writer was doing so great, but as time pass, everyone look's and act so slow that this drama is dragging. OMG! the writer lost touch in base, that LSS look like a small little kitten and is step all over especially by Choi Yeon-A . Also Shin Joon-Ho, don't know if he is coming or going and his parents are also in the bind. What a crazy drama. There was a duet singing and I thought it was UI, but it was another person singing and that girl sang Better the UI. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying UI can not sing, but her singing don't impress me that much! My daughter Seyeond, Ojakgyo Brothers or Family, and Hundreds Years Of Inheritance still top this drama.

Lexee Aug 06 2013 4:21 pm I very much enjoy this show! In my opinion, the show shows diverse characters who show growth and depth. With a multigenerational cast and great settings, the ploy shines! I will note some conflicts and struggles seem dragged out, but that is expected of a weekend drama (due to the fact weekend dramas usaually last 50-100 episodes). I give it a high thumbs up, but would not recommend it to everyone. Patience is the key for this K-drama.

At that time Song Mi Ryung can take the oportunities to reconcil with soon shin's adopted family. Hehe, just suggesting, It will be more sad to Lee Soon Shin die of illness. But it will be also nice to watch Soon Shin becomes successful in her career even if she is sick. Haha, this is only an idea to add in some spices in this beautiful drama. Hope you make more drama like this with the genre family, romance and comedi. The number 1 drama about family I like and seen so far is 'autumn in my heart'. That is the best family drama. Second best is Yun Jae In, followed by Kim Tak Gu. Hope you write more story about family and romance and of cause comedi is a plus. Thanks writer and director for this beautiful drama.

The story goes slowly so i could enjoy it for longer time compare to others which only have 16 or 20. Aside from having 50 episode,it also has its unique itself to attract people, whether it's actor and actress or maybe its drama itself ,or maybe both.. ^^ Lee Soon Shin is the best!!! fighting!! waiting for next new episodes!!!!

For being a first time main actress, IU is doing so well, i absolutely love her acting abilities. The story line however is abit slow, its been past 30 eps and yet no romance between the main characters. I hope this story line progresses very soon.

But I guess such screenwriters have to fill it in some how. They really Have been not credible in this drama. No fault of all the actors, They are great.

Although I think there were a couple of miscasts, Jo Jung-Suk (reminds me of Jet-Li) who doesn't look or act like a CEO of a big entertainment company and Yun Da-Hun (he actually plays his role well but they dress him 10+ years younger than his age)

The screenwriters today have run out of material! I am not going to Endure up to 50 (Fifty) episodes. This ? will definitely fail for 2013.

I'd be so gloomy and sad if I miss one episode. My hearts pounds very badly when I do think about this amazing drama. IU is great.. She is so great.. Through this drama I got to reckon IU as one of the best actress. I can't leave this drama.. I will surely watch all it's 50 episodes with greatest addiction and desire. Love this greatest drama... :3 I m waiting a lot for next coming episodes. I don't have proper patience to watch it's all episodes. I have gone crazy abt this drama.. Davia May 29 2013 12:04 am I really like the way Joon Ho is portrayed as a complex character who tries to appear confident and cool but is really a bit insecure, sensitive and caring. Jo Jung Suk does mesmerizing portrayal of this character which for me is really heart opening and endearing. I hope we get to see much more of him in this drama than we have so far. It would be a huge waste of talent otherwise.

Davia May 28 2013 11:57 pm We are up to episode 24 and I think that this drama should be called 'LEE SOON SHIN'S MOTHERS'. It is a family melodrama where the main characters appear to be the mothers.

Lee Soon Shin is evidently not very important in this drama because by episode 24 she still has very few lines, mostly stammering, or any development of her character.There is very little interaction between who we thought were the leads. Which is really a shame. Jo Jung Suk who does a wonderful job of portraying Joon Ho has hardly any scenes at all.

This drama appeared to be very enjoyable at first so I am not sure if that is why it is #1 or that the viewers in Korea enjoy watching mothers agonizing endlessly episode after episode but I am personally hoping to see more interaction and character development between Soon Shin and Joon Ho.

Oh and by the way I agree with Woo Joo, even though she is unbelievable rude and gets away with it time and again, that the Baker is a bit of a jerk even though he puts on a Mr nice guy act. He is a kind of mean to the other employee who actually is quite adorable.

No wonder. 30 or more episodes? Script writer, Director & staff better regroup. So far, Soon Shin is going through nothing but Grief! I'm really getting Sick of Jun Ho, He's written by script as nothing but arrogant. Please don't push romance with this Guy And Soon Shin. I wish the writers would write this guy out of this drama! Nothing but arrogance, Thinks He's tough sh---t

I learned about two great actors, IU and Jo Jung-Suk! IU is cute and such a talented actress! Jung-Suk is a hottie and splendid actor! My only problem, is waiting for the next episodes...I share the same sentiments as the other commenters... 50 episodes?! It's only the 16th episode, and I feel like it's at it's climax... I wonder how the whole story will turn out! Can't wait....can't wait!

lalala Apr 29 2013 2:05 am @all as i know, all drama that aired on saturday-sunday 19:50 on KBS2 always have a good rating (20-30% is very ordinary in this slot (but on weekly drama it's very amazing to have >20% viewers rating). korean will say it amazing if the drama can surpass 30% viewers rating) b'coz it's only have one competitor (MBC also air drama at the same time but got low ratings, SBS choose to air news on the time).

i think IU acting is good for her leading role debut (at least better from her buddy in DH). JJS just excellent (hope he can get another leading role in another drama). Other casts like Go Doo Shim, Lee Mi Sook, Kim Gab Soo, Park Yong Rim, and other are really amazing in their roles. oh, don't forget Ji Hoon (from School 2013) too. But like others comment, this drama just predictable. We can guess who is IU's real mother from 1st episode. i hope the writer can put some twist and more secret in this drama.

I hope IU will sing an OST for this drama. She has excellent singing skill (i really like her song).

Danny Apr 27 2013 8:40 am IU is super talented but without the whole cast working together, this show would have been another boring show. The whole overall casting was cast well by the writer, directer and producer. Unlike some shows which has product endorsement, this has very little of that.

With a stellar cast such as veteran Lee Mi Sook, super talented adorable Yoo In Na and one of the most beautiful mom in Korea Son Tae-Young (husband is Kwon Sang-Woo), the show just became interesting.

The only think I find is annoying is how the writer writes the story. He/she create too many misunderstanding which made some of the episodes predictable. If the writer is reading this now, you should at least change a little on this part.

Dream High was IU main debut and she killed it. Now she has matured on and is taking a leading role which not many actress/singer is able to handle it but she does it so naturally I am totally blown away so far by her skill of acting......which she can be emotional at times, cute, happy, angry and sad. IU......FIGHTING!!!!! All the way no.1 until the final episode. I would not want this to end actually and hopefully the producer will see it a chance to make it another 50 episodes at least!

If you didn't notice, they gave you hints on lee soon shin's mother on like the 2nd or 3rd episode. So people probably knows who her mother is. You can also tell by lee soon shin's father, not letting her act. Overall the drama is awesome!! Keep on doing good jobs Lee soon shin is the best actors!! I hope that it will be a success and i know that it will be a success too!! :)

I'm a huge IU fan and her acting is quite well for a rookie actress. It's my first 50 kdrama and so far it's been interesting, it makes you appreciate the little details in a drama instead of a 16 ep. #determined to watch it to the end# IU HWAITING!!!

gamertwenty Apr 02 2013 10:45 am I didn't start watching for IU as I'm not a fan per say. Just casual kpop listener. I didn't even realize it was her until about the 3rd episode. However This drama is amazing! I mean you can watch it all the way through. The episodes aren't too dragged out. It does go away from the main story occasionally for maybe a couple of minutes, but thats just to brilliantly set something up or fill plot holes etc. again its good, u don't want to miss a second of it. Acting can be easily argued good/bad, but since this one isn't based on a book or anything of that sort, the acting is outstanding.

I believe IU will make it as a lead actress but I also believe that Yoo Inna will catch the public's eye as a second lead.Im guessing it's gonna be like in Sungkyunkwan Scandal with Yoo AhIn's Geol Oh and Song JoongKi's Yeorim, best couple of the year 2011 or 2010. So yeah..my thoughts go to Inna.
