Plot

Ume (Kyoko Kishida) and Kame (Kazuko Yoshiyuki) are two elderly sisters who live in a large house packed with discarded items they find while rummaging through trash in their town. One day, the two women find some red yarn and bring it home. That evening, the women discover a young girl (Ayu Kitaura) who has entered their home and knitting a sweater with their red wool. Who is this girl?

Bruce Feb 21 2016 2:51 pm I was hoping to find an analysis or speculation somewhere of what this film was about other than a fanciful imagining like Amelie or such. It seemed as if the young knitter was supposed to be the spawn of the sisters' earlier attempt at knitting a baby for their soldier, but of course this is clear as mud.

While I enjoyed this quirky film without deeper understanding of symbolism, as it introduced the soldier and the imperative to evacuate, I began to wonder where it was supposed to take place and what context was implied. The gigantic house and the neighbors was in no way typically Japanese, and the soldier seemed to imply WWII given the age of the sisters.

The markedly younger appearance of the one sister did bother me a bit; there was a lot of polish and production value throughout the film, but this little detail seemed to be inappropriately neglected. Could have made to look closer to the apparent age of her sister. There were a few times when the two didn't seem to be able to stay in character, as well.
