An Indonesian town by the sea has been ruined by war and tsunami. A man is found on the coast there by Atsuko (Mayu Tsuruta) and her son Takashi (Taiga Nakano). They are working in disaster recovery. The man speaks poor Japanese and Indonesian. They name him Rau which means sea in Indonesian and protect him. Soon, Rau is connected with many miraculous cases.

Filming began August 5, 2017 and takes place completely at Banda Aceh on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia.

I guess 'Laut' , the fantastic man leads the youth to face the hurtful memories and to go on normal pace of daily life from disasters. Anyway, it is beautiful and interesting. Wish for peace and courage and happy life.

FeKimi Dec 19 2018 5:21 am Watch this on Jakarta - Japan Film Festival 2018 and fortunate enough to see the main cast up close ^^. In the surfice, the movie is actually quite light with bubbly romance and loveable character (Taiga as Takashi is really a scene stealer!). It captures Aceh in its raw environment but also gives some beautiful shots (especially on that spectacular ending). Some of audiences maybe find this movie is confusing and even hard to digest, but as Fukuda-san said, he gives the audiences freedom to interpret this movie by their own perspective. For me, yes, there are some scenes that feels confusing which you really have to think about, but once you know, it feels really deep.
