Drama series follows the life of Prince Gwanghae. Even though he is the child of a concubine, he becomes the crown prince. For the next 16 years, until he becomes the King, Prince Gwanghae suffers through dethronement and death threats. Using physiognomy as a weapon, he is able to become the King.

This an addictive historical drama from start to finish and the OST and cinematography and acting from all the cast is exemplary. I really like watching “The King’s Face”, a historical drama based on the actual historical figure and life of Prince GwangHae that became King GwangHae (1608-1623). “The King’s Face” has romance, palace intrigues and political issues interwoven that make the story is so engaging and entertaining. The actor Seo In Guk and actress Jo Yoon Hee are both so attractive and fun to watch in portraying teenage Prince GwangHae and Kim Ga Hee. Both make the beginning of the story so interesting, and their interpretation of adolescent compassionate Prince Gwanghae and tomboy Kim Ga Hee, is so convincing and makes the story fascinating.

I notice Crown Prince Gwanghae becomes a man during Imjin War and actor Seo In Guk’s performance grows into his character as well. The story is getting sadder and sadder as King Seon Jo is so envious of his son, Crown Prince GwangHae, that has a King’s Face. To make the matter worse for Prince GwangHae, Professor Go San, the palace physiognomy, advice King Seon Jo to take Kim Ga Hee as his concubine to improve King Seon Jo’s facial characteristics and become a sage king. It is truly a heart wrenching moment watching the episode when Crown Prince GwangHae realizes it for the first time that Kim Ga Hee is King Seon Jo’s Court Lady.

There is an ambitiously smart but vile character in the story, Physiognomist Kim Do Chi, that uses his physiognomy skills to fulfill his dream to capture the throne. The actor, Shin Sung Rok, portrays Kim Do Chi convincingly and accomplishes as the most hateful character. The sword fight between Kim Do Chi and Crown Prince GwangHae is a beautiful choreography.

I cannot get enough of Eunuch Song, his character works as a catalyst between the King and his Crown Prince. Eunuch Song’s appearance always makes the story less sad as the character’s word of wisdom are soothing.

Actress Kim Gyu Ri that plays as Concubine Gwi In Kim is worth mentioning, her portrayal as a driven Concubine to seat her son, Prince Shin Sung, to become Crown Prince is compelling indeed

“The King’s Face” is a beautiful but poignant story. It is not a love-dovey K-drama series, but a historical political story. I wish “The King’s Face” would not have an open ending story that ends in episode 23. I would give a ten-out-of-ten for the story, acting, and the original soundtracks. I love the ballad songs and their music that continuously enhancing the scenes in the series. It is worthy to watch and re-watch. The film scenography is beautiful especially the one in the reed field when Prince GwangHae is running after Kim Ga Hee. Whenever Prince/Crown Prince GwangHae embraces Kim Ga Hee, I do not want the scene to end. It is so heartwarming and heart wrenching scene on the same time.

Like the simple-minded way, in episode 21, that the villain Kim Do-Chi is allowed to listen to the Crown Prince and the King's eunuch's conversation. And how utterly stupid and clueless the scriptwriter made them sound about what a blind man could have seen from a mile away; namely: that Kim murdered the girl originally chosen to replace the dead queen as new queen.

A script like that is an insult to viewers, whose intelligence is demeaned by a scriptwriter who apparently presumes that those who will watch the series are likewise so utterly stupid and clueless that they need the script to be blatantly obvious and simple-minded.

To me this drama start exciting scene and then escalate to somehow i dont know why but it bored me a lot! Mind you i'm a big fan of history drama so it doesnt matter if the plot are so long but in this case it just not deep enought...

I believe that a good drama will have good background music since it will potrayed the mood and situation in a scene of the drama but the king face only have 1 background music from the start untill the end!

So to summarized this the plot are not interesting, the background music are lame and the lead male actor is just mehh..

I give this 2.8/5 mark

If u really want to find some good historical drama then here are some recommendation:

1) The six flying dragon 2)Deep rooted tree

This the only superb history drama with less than 50 episode and it start with interesting opening scene and kepp u going untill the end screaming for more! hahaha

LoveIsPain Jun 08 2015 12:51 am . I feel so much pain for GA HEE. I know that Love is full of sacrifices, and being a King is a huge responsibility . But after what she did and endure for him. How could the story ended up Prince Gwanghae saying " Ga hee, I will not come here to see you anymore". Tapp-tapi Jincha! I dont blame anyone though. She killed his father. It's just he loves GaHee. But he lived without her. I finish watching the drama 3 days ago, but I still cried myself to sleep. And the Ost still playing in my head. :'(

CJ Apr 11 2015 8:09 am The tv series is not shown here yet in the Philippines like Empire and Game of Thrones, thus it is quite an effort to watch the whole series online.. yet it is worth the time..beautiful and poignant.. what i admire most is its cognitive impact to the viewers.. i for one became a fan of historical, political korean drama series hahaha.. im starting to check old korean historical TV series.. i love the way the actors portrayed the characters.. im a big fan of the crown prince, the king and the concubine hahaha.. well done.. the way the imjin war is depicted is hilarious yet tactful.. i just love it.. the superb acting skills of the leading man Seo In-Guk is truly effective..this is one of the tv series that i would say people from all walks of life would learn from..i for one believe that the standard of television is regressing..if you wanted to see an effective, powerful and worthy of your time drama watch this.. good job koreans!:) Khamsamnida:)

I just wanted to watch the dram because of Seo In Guk and wondering what would be the next role of Shin Sung Rok. The first episodes we're really boring but in the end the story is good and interesting. It's just the ending is unfortunate.

Kim Ga-Hee's face looks like she's just 18 years old.

The ending wasnt as great as i had expected it to be although Gwanghae gets the throne because his romance with Gaahui comes to a dead end. this show could've been so much better..but its a decent watch anyways

Jared Feb 13 2015 3:43 am I never thought that ep 23 is the final episode coz i was expecting it to be up to 25 ep..That is why I was looking for ep 24...I missed the fist few seconds were the words "FINAL EPISODE" are writtrn...Anyway just like most Korean dramas the endings are always a disappointment....Lacking in substance...hanging....Anyway because of this drama I appreciated Seo In-Guk more...I've seen him in Love Rain... Another drama I like but not the ending... Just like Healer, I really enjoyed watching i, the excitement.... but the ending is not enough to my satisfaction....

ingukie Feb 09 2015 4:02 am I AGREE WITH MOST PEOPLE OPINION HERE. this is my first historical drama, and it was decent, not that great drama because there is some flaws. i like the events happened in this drama. but, sometimes it was poorly portrayed. i expected so much for the finale, because after all the hardship that Gwanghee has occured, the finale one should be the greatest, the climax of the story. but, it just hold for 10 minutes(?). and, when i read the background of king Gwanghee, the event to deposed him before he was crown as the king was the most highlighted event. but then, again.. just couple of scenes. this drama supposed to have 24 episodes, cut for 1 episode. there might be the reason for the finale is not that great. btw, im inguk fan, still a lover of his acting~ <3

ala Feb 08 2015 8:28 am the story started out so well and even towards middle it was okay..but the last 3-4 episodes are so messed up with completely useless plots and twists..and the way kim do chi dies at the end id really funny..after 2 min of sword fight with the prince which looks more like they are playing..also the swordmanship of the actors looks really funny and is very evident that its being shot..and Shin sung rok rally doesnot fit into the role of Kim do chi..although the kings character is really irritating but his acting looks real..this drama could have been much better but overall it really disappointed me after such a promising start

persh Feb 07 2015 1:57 am Very decent drama. anyone who has watched Admiral Yi Soon Shin drama, knows what kind of king Seonjo was. Throughout the drama he was jealous of his most loyal subjects and even his own son. This drama focuses more on the princes but there is mention of Yi soon-shin. Both this drama and soon-shin portrayed the King very well. The actor in this drama who portrayed the king just got a fan.

CoolBeans Jan 31 2015 5:12 am I am glad this drama is starting to improve, but, it is too little too late! I love love love Seo In Guk and his dramas! This one does not do him justice primarily because of the poor script. The writer keeps repeating the same theme from episode to episode.I stopped watching at about ep. 7 and came back to see if it has improved just because I want to see In Guk. It is expected that Kdramas get a little boring in the middle, but, this one was boring from almost the beginning! Plus, the clothes budget must have been low, since, the leads were in the same outfits throughout except when In Guk was cleaning the stable! LOL! Further emphasizing the repetitiveness of this drama! I hope In Guk can get a lead in a better drama. I know most scripts are not completed when actors sign their contracts.

Also, the depiction of Ming's role in Imjin Waeran was completely negative as if Chosun single-handedly defeated the invading Japanese, again, far from the reality. Too bad.

zeba Jan 22 2015 8:30 pm I donot understand why Ga hee doesnot tell Crown prince the true identity of kim do chi and what his real plans are..its already 19 episode now..this would be such a great tip for the crown prince..i think this is a really big script flaw..also generally in other sageuks the clothes look so glamorous of the court ladies and the princes but this drama is really disappointing in this regard ..I mean they keep on wearing the same robes for 4 -5 continuous episodes..other than that I believe its a better than average drama

jaime Jan 21 2015 3:01 am this drama is sooooooo underrated. even though the plot is pretty cliche, but the acting and storyline somehow catches the viewers (or at least my) heart. i totally agree with one of the comments below that says that this drama is a historical drama yet it's does not bored you a single bit. it is action packed and also has love lines that are pretty heart-wrenching. not to forget the idea of face reading is actually really interesting. it's a pity that it does not receive much attention in korea and everywhere else..

mana Jan 20 2015 11:07 pm its a good drama..and the acting of the king, the crown prince and lead actress is really good..but I don't like shin suk rok acting in this drama ..I believe he is too stiff to convey the emotions in specially the starting episodes where his character was building..also the concubines acting is not very graceful unlike the queen who has carried out the role with great grace..and the king has no trust in anybody neither his many sons nor his wives..he only listens to whatever whichever minister says and has no mind of his own

Most impressed with the King's acting skills, usually historical drama like this, actors that play the king role is just so horrible but this one caught my interest! Man! King's role is the most intriguing part for me, hands down. Not to mention prince Gwanghae's role is very interesting too, seo in guk did not disappoint me. I never liked historical drama but this one totally changed my opinion about historical drama! This is a must watch!!!

LP Jan 10 2015 12:37 am I had doubts in this drama, because Seo In-Gook has kind of always been the second lead. But it is so great and intense, that I just had to make a comment. There is suspense, comedy, romance, tragedy....you name it what you like and you will find it in this drama. I really recommend it...you will not regret it. :)

Davia Jan 06 2015 8:54 pm Such an entertaining historical drama. Each episode is interesting. I've finished ep. 8 and am not bored even a bit. In fact I can't stop watching it. There are a lot of great actors in this. Korea has the best character actors. KD's only weakness generally are their female leads. I don't think that this lead actress is necessarily bad though. I think that the way the part has been written for her lacks intelligence and depth. I think her part could have been given a little more nuance. For instance when she was watching him being stoned. She should have felt some feeling of concern, no matter what, if she had any ounce of humanity in her.

jackie Dec 23 2014 3:52 pm im really enjoying this drama,thanks to the people who recommeded it.this drama and Pinocchio are my current "IT" dramas at the moment.the only problem i have with this drama is the lead actress.her acting doesnt have any emotions at all.my fav. characters are seo iL guk and the King.their acting are the only real thing in this drama

money Dec 16 2014 9:39 pm @jackie...give it a try and evaluate this drama yourself. this drama is really good, its my personal opinion. don't know the others because people do have different tastes, just like what @reply said. for me, i really love how the actors brings out the characters lively and successfully shows the emotions...you name it, and its there..through their actions, voices, body language..eyes full of emotions. thumbs up to the actors/actresses especially the actors play king seonjo and prince gwanghae, and not to forget the director. i really enjoying this drama, it has an interesting plot/ story. just follow the flow of the story and have fun! psst...love the drama's music theme/song..haha

reply Dec 13 2014 12:43 pm @dramakid sorry but My Lovable Girl rating was higher than Blade Man like twice of it and can't said that the causing of low rating is just because of Blade Man. actually there're a lot more like bad news about plagiarism controversy but later it's just become clear and there's no point to compare this drama with Pinocchio which isn't got so much higher on ratings. the gaps between them is just 2-3% in the lastest episode and in term of gaining viewers the king's face didn't lose to Pinocchio a bit, anyway people do have different tastes. for me I don't really like the storyline of Pinocchio it's too intense and so true but for the king's face I like the feel of story it's more soft pure and fun. action scenes or story about face readers re interesting not to mention how the actors brings out the emotions I just love it.

dramakid Dec 12 2014 2:21 pm why are people saying the low rating is becos of Blade man? i know Blade man was low,but thats not ths only reason reason this drama got low rating.My Lovable Girl rating was even lower than what Blade man got but yet,becos people found Pinocchio drama to be interesting and addictive,they decided to turn in. Mr Baek started-off great,people got bored of it,cos the storyline is going astray. if The King's face has a very story plot(which i assume it has,cos i just started it) that is different from most kdrama(eg;Pinocchio),then people will turn in.Pinocchio is gaining viewers cos the each ep are so intense.if The King's Face continue to keep us at the edge of our sit,then i see no reason why the ratings will be low.sorry for my long post^^^

sieehhh Dec 11 2014 3:34 pm i don't know why in this site it's written NR. please do research it properly. until now, i'm enjoying this drama. it's great acting and i keep hook to watch till the end. compare to the other drama currently airing, this one has beautifully angle scene camera and thumbs up to the actors & director.

At first didnt care about it as the ratings aren't quite good but dd a little research on it and watch the first episode it turns out to be very different. . I am hung up on it and every minute and second i was afraid i wil mis the drama. . It was so good, all the ators/actresses are amazing. . I wil surely watch till the end n ty for giving us such a great drama and for me its the best drama so far. . N it gave me the very reason that ratings are meaningless. .. .fighting!!!!!!!!!!

inggukie lover Dec 10 2014 11:24 am really glad that inguk take this role, its one of well written sageuk drama story.. i am not say this because i am a fan of him, i see it from the whole drama.. the complexity of this drama, the detail, the back and forth plot and the all cast are doing their best to bring each character out.. i just hope this drama will not get affected by the rating, and the story keep going as what they are first planning..

what makes me heartbreaking is to see gwanghae is crying in every episode, i hate to see him cry T_T.. why is everyone turn their back off of him..

They're on a number of different sites, and it's doing fairly reasonable considering it's late start against Mr. Back and Pinocchio. Its written well. And for all the Jo Yoon Hee haters (and I had my doubts), she's nailing it. As is Seo In-Guk, Lee Sung Jae and Shin Sung Rok. Grat action scenes too!

crazyheart Dec 06 2014 3:28 pm I have watched all the drama that's aired recently. compare to all of them this drama is a great one, it's good in it own way which is better than many dramas and i believe it still have a lot of chances to gained more and more viewers. actually i don't think that Mr.Back and Phinocchio has high ratings at all. this drama can change the flow of ratings for both of them in the past and still in the future. though it maybe hard to gain much from now but who know... because rating is up to god. we can't foresee the future but as you watch it you can see how great of this drama and wont drop it for sure. (@Dianne so please don't worry too much about ratings)

the ratings maybe lied but the face of this drama tell the truth. we should believe in (The King's) Face.

Thankfully, we who watch online from all over the world (I'm in USA) can watch ALL or as many as we have time to watch because we can watch when we can. That's why the ratings are always so much higher on the web pages that carry these dramas online! What a shame the online opinions don't count. What a shame the stations are in such strict competition. Well, they are in the same competition here in the States also. There's a lot of $$ at stake...

If anyone reads these comments that can make a difference, PLEASE DON'T CUT THE NUMBER OF EPISODES BELOW 24, ITS ORIGINAL NUMBER! There are a lot of us out here in the world that love Kdramas, and we would like to see them complete...

Cbsbe Dec 05 2014 12:59 am For the 'dissapointed' lady below, yes the first ep scene did showcase that Ga Hee will end up with Gwaghae's dad.. However the physiognomy professor mentioned that she will serve "2 Kings".. So I reckon she may still end up with Gwanghae.. That 2 sec scene of her feeding Gwanghae's dad is ambiguous so I guess we will have to continue to watch this show to find out what really is going to happen...

According to the beginning scene of ep.1 (which is the scenes of future events), it shows Ga Hee with the king which means she ended up with him and not Gwanghae..

That I find disappointing.. As I was watching the drama I thought that Gwanghae & Ga Hee made the perfect couple! But because of the beginning scene I know that they don't end up with each other and both end up marrying someone else. In Ga Hee's case it's Gwanghae's own father. Ga Hee also seems like she is no longer on Gwanghae's side either but rather against him from everything she said and her tone of voice. Maybe something happens between them two, that causes her to despise him?
