Due to depleting natural resources and overpopulation, humans look to Mars as their next habitat. Terraforming is the project to change Mars' environment to accommodate humans. For this project, cockroaches are sent to Mars and mutated to walk.

In the year 2599, 15 poor Japanese are sent to Mars to take out the cockroaches. They are unaware of what they are up against.

Notes

Based on manga series "Tera Fomazu" by Yu Sasuga (writer) and Kenichi Tachibana (illustrator). The manga series was first published in 2011 by Shueisha's magazine Weekly Young Jump.
Filming begins May, 2015.
Movie is the first Japanese film to shoot on location in Iceland - shooting takes place in Iceland from August, 2015.
The character of Sakakibara, played by Rila Fukushima, is original to the film and is not in the original manga.

But talk about the movie and the story line, I'll give it a 7/10. CGI is not so good, I think. I've watch so many Hollywood apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic movies and I couldn't help but compare.. Anyway, this is based on manga and anime (which I both didn't read or watch) - so who am I to judge, ne? Hahaha I just said what I thought about the movie.

Noodle Jun 18 2017 11:09 pm Terra Formars, probably not a really known series but I was glad I discovered the anime and I was super excited there's a live action adaptation for this series. To be honest, I totally didn't know that this movie exists until I found it today. This is my first time feeling satisfied with the line of casts. I was horribly disappointed with other live action adaptations that I watched before because they were just unsuitable for the role. So, I just finished watching the movie and I think it's really great, especially since they totally follow what happened in the manga, except of the addition of a new character, Sakakibara. I hope there's a sequel because I want them to make a live action adaptation of the anime, which is Shokichi's second trip to Mars with new crew members. This movie is based on Shokichi's flashbacks in the anime.

shigi Apr 08 2016 5:51 pm somewhat baffling why they bother with live action adaption of this genre, they generally require so much cgi (and not the good kind either), they end up doing more damage than good to the original manga/anime. unfortuanately ultimately what dictates is how much tickets and merchandise they sell at the theatre and beyond. take attack the titans for example, would a person seek out the origianls had they watch the farce of a live action first, probably not.
