Tsumugi Aoba (Haruna Kawaguchi) fell in love with So Sakura (Ren Meguro), who attended the same high school. They both shared an interest in music. Their relationship got deeper and deeper, but, suddenly, So Sakura said goodbye to her without giving a reason for their break-up and he disappeared.

8 years later, Tsumugi Aoba is now in Tokyo and works part-time at a large CD music store. She is surrounded by music she likes. One day, she happens to see So Sakura. She wants to talk to him, but she realizes that he has almost lost his hearing.

Jillibean Sep 23 2023 12:50 am Very poignant story. I must confess that I think the second male lead Oji stole the drama. Only 22 years old when he made it, too; so impressive a performance he made me cry.

pebble Jul 09 2023 8:54 am I really loved this series, it was incredibly heartfelt and well-written. The struggles and growth of each character made them endearing. Though it would have been cute to see them be more physically affectionate, I think it was much more meaningful to see Tsumugi and Sou show their love for each other through their words and actions. It was also interesting that the music was cut so abruptly, just like how Sou lost his ability to hear. Although it was jarring, I came to appreciate such details. In a world where many hearing people struggle to express their own feelings, it's refreshing to see a main character with the bluntness and persistence to listen.

siskak Jun 06 2023 10:08 am okay i didn't know some people didn't love this series as much (at least from the comments on here) but some comments r really not getting the point lol sou doesn't talk because he Chose not to, not because he can't.. obviously he's traumatized by the fact that he cannot suddenly hear plus the stories in each episode is literally a part of the story. it's the characters' pasts that needs to be addressed so the viewers know more about the characters' struggles and challenges they faced the past eight years. anyways, i love this series. it was a bit emotional heavy for me but it was an amazing and quick watch, it kept me want to keep watching every episode!

Aephilyea Dec 24 2022 6:16 pm I first watch this drama because of Meguro Ren.... Many will say I watch just because Ren is in the movie... But after going through 10/11 episode of the drama, I felt the genuinely touch about this drama... A lot of love scene in the movie A mother love, a best friend love, a genuine break up for the sake of love one, a genuine reunited of love one and many more... It even involve psychology scene where why sou didnt talk in the drama and why he didnt tell his bff and gf about his illness That's what actually happen in our society... There's no denying it... I dont recommend to those who dont like slow drama...

The reason why he doesn't use his voice is because he doesn't accept the situation he is in. I hope the series ends happily or else I will cry.

Mirai Dec 16 2022 4:16 am I hardly ever write anything on here, but I’m seeing some negative comments. That I feel should be addressed. Sou’s refusal to talk isn’t about his inability to, or the drama’s need to solidify his disability, but rather a reflection of his mental state. Yes, he can still talk. Ultimately, he’s in an even better position to do so than those who have never had hearing but still learn to mimic to sounds based off vibrations. However, in Sou’s case, it’s clear that his choice to not talk isn’t so much about his disability, as it is about him still struggling to fully accept his disability and the change it’s brought into his life. I think over all, he’s struggling to find the balance between having been able to hear, and not being able to hear and the differences in those experiences. Even if he’s adapted to being deaf in an everyday life and communication aspect, he’s still struggling mentally and emotionally. The drama showcases that by showing Nana asking if he still doesn’t speak to his family, or Tsumugi lightly asking why it is he refuses to use his voice.

Shri Dec 15 2022 5:37 am Many criticised the drama because he was deaf he is not mute and can talk but when hearing becomes impaired one can't guess there pitches of voice which sometime embarrass them and pronunciation of words also becomes awkward so normally people with hearing impairness suggested to use sign language to avoid such situations. We should not forget most of the Jdrama based on medical issues are well researched and then made

Maggie Dec 05 2022 7:46 am Silent is beautifully done but totally over the top 'woe is me'! Even if you can't hear you can feel your voice through the vibration of the vocal chords! Also you can feel vibration in your cranium/skull too. Many people born without hearing can learn to speak. Beethoven kept writing music after he lost his hearing!

Great actors/casting but not that believable a story.  The excuse that Sou does not want to have others worrying etc doesn't quite gel! 
Great for learning Nihongo.

Renwa Nov 29 2022 7:39 pm I usually wait until the end of a drama to comment but emergency measures are necessary here given a few naysayers. I’ve seen 7/11 episodes thus far and think Silent is a genuine hit! It’s a beautiful sensitive endearing thoughtful Japanese drama. Ren Meguro plays a young man who loses his hearing as a teenager and the impact it has on his life. The cast as a whole does a commendable job. This young actor hits it out of the park with an exceptional performance. We are privileged to watch the journey of deaf people who have never heard and ones that did hear but lost their hearing. It’s about the intersection of the deaf and hearing or not. It’s a story of growth, endurance, love and retrieval of everyone’s right to a life. Kudos to the Screenwriter and Director who keep this drama honest, thoughtful, sensitive and moving forward without vacuous sentimentality. Simply put…it’s really a lovely story well acted and worthy of your viewing. Don’t miss it. It’s a keeper!

The act of speaking in sign language while crying really touched me. The character of Sou Sakura has really fascinated me. Really looking forward to next episode!

I become interested in learning sign language because of this drama. Looking forward for another 6 episodes!!
