Plot

Set during the early years of the Chinese republic, when feuding warlords waged constant wars to expand their power, young army leader Hao Jie (Andy Lau) and his sworn brother Huo Lung find little resistance invading the township of Dengfeng. The nearby Shaolin Temple opens its doors to the wounded and disciples Jing Neng, Jing Kong and Jing become masked Robin Hoods at night to help the poor. The young and arrogant Hao Jie then challenges the Shaolin masters when he learns they are helping his enemies. Hao Jie wins his duel and becomes even more arrogant.

Nevertheless, the mighty Hao Jie experiences a swift and sudden fall, when he is betrayed by Huo Lung and finds himself at the doorsteps of the Shaolin Temple seeking help. While recuperating, Hao Jie learns the Shaolin style of martial arts and begins to find inner peace. An epic battle then awaits when Huo Lung attacks the Shaolin Temple ...

Shaolin Dec 05 2013 1:08 am @AsianMediaRules Preach it !! As for me , I loved this film . The only little thing that ticked me was Fan BingBing (#sorrynotsorry) . I mean , she's alright ... she's just getting all these roles back to back squeezed in one year , but it's still cool .

AsianMediaRules Jun 01 2012 3:22 pm I don't know about those who keep fussing about how it lacks this and that how it didn't contribute on one subject or the other. Can you do any better? It was very well portrayed and had many sacrifices and loyalty about Shaolin. It was during the turning tide of a new revolution and many Shaolin had a lot to do with it despite war or not. It gives a touching vibe and beautiful cinematography. I loved it.

Michael Jones Feb 28 2011 6:46 pm Playing fast and loose historically in order to capitalize on "shaolin temple" (pun intended) hurt the movie by being 50% martial arts and 50% war story. I agree they should have picked one or the other. Just barely enough martial arts to qualify it as a martial arts movie. My heroes Jackie Chan and Wu Jing were under-used. Still an above average movie and worth seeing.

ummm Feb 18 2011 1:23 am I think this movie could be way better if they lose the string fighting and the shaolin theme. It lacks realism! This movie would be awesome if it just talks about warlord fighting over each other and how betrayal and lies are the theme!

Tamodbx Feb 10 2011 6:08 am This is very bad. I don't know what they were thinking. I know the director wanted to stress more on Zen story telling but although I get the idea from the story which was boring everything else just falls flat for me. I see no zen fighting either. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon has way more Zen fighting then this and that is Taoism. I'm very disappointed! Jet Li is rolling his eyes people!
