Plot

Taking place from the late 70's through the early 90's. Two long years of preparation maximizes the drama…s qualities. The characters are Hae-rin, the daughter of a casino king, Woo-suk, a head strong young man living his life according to his beliefs, and Tae-soo who lives a short life as a member of a gang mixed up with political power. The sensitive topic of student demonstrations in the 80…s, the pro-democracy movement at Kwang-ju, and President Park's governing are dealt with.

Park Min Mar 22 2023 11:17 am The drama's biggest problem that always broke the immersion is its inconsistent directing/editing. I also hated Hye Rin motivation and reasoning, always felt wimpy and childish. Still a good drama.

Jilli May 29 2021 7:14 pm I have watched 626 Korean dramas and Sandglass remains without equal. Frankly I don't believe anyone can call themselves a true Korean drama fan unless they seek it out and watch it. It's an Essential. My favorite character was the bodyguard played by Lee Jung Jae. Five years after Sandglass I watched his movie with Gianna Jun called Il Mare and fell in love with him all over again. His character loved the heiress and would give up his life for her but she still preferred the gangster. Some women simply have rocks in their heads! ;) Watch Sandglass and learn about modern Korean history instead of watching yet another teen romance with piggy back rides, fix the boo boo scenes, etc. You'll be glad you did.

Fort Teen Dec 01 2013 5:54 pm Although I don't think that I could ever put myself through this epic again, it is easy to see why it's ratings and legend are (and were) both so large. As with rock music of the 60's and early 70's, it seems as if Korean drama hit a peak in the 90's and early 21st century that has remained unequaled and has fallen prey to profit margins and "cookie-cutter" approaches that the pioneers did not suffer. Bowing the the wishes of the public, at large, and play for profit corporations nearly always results in a product that is both diluted and tame when compared to it's original inspiration. None of that is true here. If you brave this journey, you will understand why this drama's impact was so great and also why it cannot be repeated. As art, sport, entertainment, education and the overall quality of life has become neutered in the west due to years of invasive gyno-centric attitudes. So has Korean drama (music, movies...) suffered irreversible testicular atrophy. None of that is in observance here. The men are men and the women are women, and, as it is in this age, only the weakest of courage and nobility are the exploiters. No person of individual ability, or talent, need seek the comfort and protection of a gang or clique. Sheep will always be sheep. You cannot make lions of them.

There are both here, and it's quite easy to find the difference between the two. Judge for yourselves, and no fair peeking at the smart kid's paper... ;)
