Ji-Eun (Hong Soo-A) is the daughter of a wealthy chaebol family. She is bright, humorous, beautiful and smart. Ji-Eun meets Se-Hoon (Lee Jae-Woo), who runs a small furniture workshop. Unlike Ji-Eun, Se-Hoon comes from a poor family background. He was once the top student at a prestigious university, but he had to drop out due to his sick mother. Nevertheless, Ji-Eun falls deeply in love with Se-Hoon. She confesses her feelings to him. Se-Hoon is also in love with Ji-Eun, but he turns her down due to the extreme differences in their backgrounds. Eventually, Se-Hoon is unable to bury his feelings any longer and they decide to marry. Ji-Eun's father constantly interferes in their marriage and Se-Hoon becomes tired of his father-in-law's meddling. Making things worse, Ji-Eun experiences a miscarriage. She leaves Se-Hoon shortly afterwards.

10 years later, their lives have changed drastically. Ji-Eun works as a housemaid and she struggles to support her family. She is also burdened by the debt left behind by her late father. Meanwhile, Se-Hoon as William Jang runs the successful U.S. cosmetic company Cosmetic Cherokee. He returns to South Korea.

Park Min Jan 25 2023 12:38 pm What do you even expect from a drama where two of the lead actors left the drama in the last third of its run?!! If the cast can't pull it together, there's no saving. The drama gets the stamp of "dead on arrival". Any drop of hope the drama had was completely 100% lost after episode 17. Ah Jun added some serious unbearable cringe when he was introduced. On a side note, the fashion totally sucked. It's too much in your face and doesn't really fit the picture. The original version Phoenix (2004) was infinitely better than whatever this was. For a very similar story Cunning Single Lady (2014) was much better too.

Mi Ran got electrocuted and was able to walk again Whaaaaaaaaat?!! I'm losing it lol. Might as well turn it into a fantasy and have Hagrid come and say "You're a wizard, Mi Ran".

Jinjoo Oct 03 2022 3:48 pm I'm watching ep 84/85 now and I see Ji eun's father alive? How was that possible where all along he was hit by a car, and his family knows he's dead! I can u/stand if he fell fr a cliff and never found his body then for some unknown reason he survived the fall and now in a Sanatorium unless I missed an ep? wheww this drama got a lot of twists & turns and it's making you dizzy at time! I'm just persevering bec of my fav actor Seo ha jun

Jinjoo Sep 08 2022 3:25 pm I just started watching this bec of Seo ha jun, so far I'm liking it in spite of some negative comments here! I think stories or some Kdramas are really up to our tastes, however I'm not sure why the other lead as I can see here in one of the comments left the drama, but no reason given? I saw in one of the episodes that he's got a transplant in the US & he got 1,000 or so days left so could that be in time for his departure in the story? Like I just started this so I dunno what happened then!

TSM Apr 08 2021 12:55 pm The main lead quit that's why they changed the lead halfway... the script was too much garbage. I think they pre-filmed the last scene of the drama where he is back by the ocean and she meets him and the second leads (who's now the new lead). We will see, but I really don't know why they would bring him back if they really did. SPOILERS... she is married to the second lead and has twins with him. What's the point of bringing him back. Really hope they don't include that scene, hope he lives well away from this crazy psycho FL.

teatree Apr 08 2021 4:41 am Despite all the negative comments, I really enjoyed the drama, specially the words and conversation exchanged that are deep and made you think a lot. Love the actors Hong Soo A and Seo Ha Jun. They acted so well that I can relate the sitauation.

Why brought Mi Ran back but not Se Hoon? I am actually waiting for his character to come back. I cannot believe I had waited so many episodes.

Wife walks in on him and the other woman holding their twin babies who are sleeping and the woman goes sshhh to the wife like shes the mother of the twins wtf?!?!! It appears she wants to worm her way in and the series is Nearing the end. Are you extending this shit drama? I give up! Drama was interesting then it turned into rubbish. To the writer/s go find another job thats better suited to you, like pumping petrol at a gas station or working at a convenient store etc those are more honest work than you writing rubbish.

The “unknown& unpopular” writer desperately has tried to add unrelated and ugly casts into it makes it more confusing and ridiculous to the drama. However let’s wait and see how this script will end at eps 120. I suppose it’ll abruptly end awfully & ridiculously as it has been so far. The writer sucks!

I want to drop it but don't because I am still curious as to how this is going to be wrapped up in the end. It's like mother, like daughter indeed. Both experts in ruining lives. I feel sorry for Se Hoon and Mr. Kang, both given a joyride by daughter and mom, respectively.

This can not be a remake of the original it's just a drama with the same name, I am convinced that's why they added 2020 just to make sure you don't get confuse. Everyday there's a new storyline and new characters, it's like "Joe's Apartment" everyday a new roach appears with a bigger storyline then the last roach. There's about 10 different stories in this one drama that you can't help but be confuse because nothing makes sense. I love dailies but not this one. Kate Feb 15 2021 11:16 am Even Man in a Veil, and Mom has an affair, both very unrealistic makjang dramas were entertaining with the acting and at least more diverse environments. Its like every scene is filmed in the corporate office now with minimal outside scenes or none at all. On top of this these bland characters are thrown into the mix hence the piss poor rating for its 80th episode. They can probably get this back on the right track on the 90th or at the very latest its hundredth episode. The first 20 was amazing, the 20 to forty was your typical dragging daily, but it still kept you in with the charismatic Jung Min and the upsetting and well-acted wrath of Mi-Ran. But now its struggling! I was so disappointed to be invested in the first fourty only to be dumped to where we are now. The acting between the main characters is great, but these side characters just have to go. Is there going to be a rivalry now between Jung Mins secretary and Ji-Eun?? Enough already!

Askalad Jan 17 2021 10:11 pm I really dont get how they turned the original version of this series that was so well loved because of the leads undying love for one another, to this crap version. No matter how much her relationship with the second lead progressed she kept her love for the lead deep down and viewers felt it throughout the series, thats why it was so loved. This version. she has completely forgotten about him not a single thought. I really hope the ML doesn't go back to her. In the end he should teach them all a lesson and leave to rise again like in the original ''Phoenix''. Where we see him next to the phoenix painting.If I remember the previews correctly and the beginning of this drama, it will end not like the orignal where the two meet at the beach and reunite, but this time the 3 leads will meet and its an open ending. Good dramas can have open ending but the very least that a crappy drama can do is give us a good ending. At least for the ML who's the original PHEONIX as the show title intended, as he rose from rags to richest and had to suffer constant abuse and humiliation from everyone from the moment he met the LF, with no one to stand by him.

It starts off like Phoenix but when our lead relationship goes down the drain all hell breaks loose and the character you will hate the most is probably the FL. I really don't get how or why the lead would be brought back together in the end. Their past relationship was hell, their current even worse, why would he hope for a different future with this crazy girl ... I don't know. He deserves so much better.

leony Jan 06 2021 7:37 am Jung Min and Ji Eun's relationship has no solid basis. I find the male attitude crass. And Ji Eun character is so insincere. They are both annoying. Makes you want to ask where they are coming from. Jung In character is nicer.

Carrie Dec 27 2020 7:41 pm It's so draggy! They slotted in so many flashbacks just to drag it long enough for 120 episodes. Just get straight to the point and get it done and over with. What is with all these "I love you, but I don't want to be with you" nonsense.

And the only thing that saves this drama are the two good-looking leads - Seo Ha-Jun and Hong Soo-A. She reminds me of Patricia Chong Ching Yee (Chinese: 莊靜而) in her younger days.

Chittaphrrr Dec 02 2020 9:36 pm I haven't watched the original drama, but I watched a trailer of the two leads first interaction and was immediately interested. However I couldn't help but find the characters relationship incredibly toxic. Female lead practically forced herself on him and he showed his disinterest, but she persisted with this. Their relationship was very rushed and I found myself skipping episodes.. which lead to me dropping it which is a pity. Loved the cinematography though :)

Liesel Oct 29 2020 4:04 am So far the music is pretty good and isn't over-bearing or cookie-cutter and it sounds like they have some original OST's which is nice for a change, especially with a daily drama.

thornnnn Oct 26 2020 3:20 am Wow! .. The original phoenix with Lee Seo-jin was one of my all time favorites. 120 episodes! (60 hours). +50% longer! now to figure how long i have to wait if i wait to binge watch. 2.5 hours a week into 60 hours total. 6 months?
