Cheon Ji-Hun (Namkoong Min) is a lawyer with an unusual style. His hair has a stylish perm. He charges only 1,000 won (about $1 USD) for his service, but he is one of the most skilled lawyers around. He fights against the most expensive lawyers and their rich clients, who try to get away with breaking the law.

Baek Ma-Ri (Kim Ji-Eun) works as a prosecutor’s assistant after graduating from the Judicial Research and Training Institute. She is confident and posesses high self-esteem. Her grandfather is Baek Hyun-Mu (Lee Deok-Hwa), who founded the famous Baek Law Firm and works at his law firm as a lawyer. Baek Ma-Ri’s life goes smoothly, but her life changes after she meets Cheon Ji-Hun.

It started off really strong with the hilarious screenplay and the superb delivery of the actors... and then when they show the flashback scenes of Namgoong Min's character, they completely shifted the genre from a 5 star comedy to a 5 star melodrama, and the exexution is indeed perfect... I'm amazed how it can make me bawled my eyes out from laughing too much to weeping for the saddest love story in a matter of few episode...

But that was it for me... The drama derailed since there... I had so much expectation because of the strong start, I thought it had potential be one of the all time greats... But it only went from a really strong start to a mediocre ending

Mara May 22 2023 10:24 am Sure, as most of the comments say the ending's rushed and the series should have been more than the 12 episodes, but I was still engaged with the story and its characters, particularly our three leads. Didn't feel rushed at all for me. And while I admit there seemed to be some issues unexplained, I'm satisfied overall with the conclusion. And I'm thankful the writers didn't write a love story for Mari and Jihun, which would ruin the whole thing.

Eri Apr 01 2023 12:11 pm As the other comments already said, it sucks that such a good drama was cut short cause this type of story is definitely the type to go on for long or at least produce a S2. I feel like we lost a huge chunk of the story and the characters' interpersonal relationship and it was really a shame, although they did manage to endear us with the characters in this story.

The cast definitely brought life to the series, even the big boss villain no matter how little focus on him at the end was. Really want more funny evil villain like Chairman Choi LOL And I was so sad that I didn't see much of Seo Minhyeok, I want more! He was such a scene stealer. And then of course we have the main trio (even though CJH likes going off on his own), who was played by the amazing Nam Goong Min, Kim Ji Eun, and Park Jin Woo. NGM's acting is impeccable as always, he really plays the eff out of the characters he was given. KJE I've seen before in Day6's MVs but this is her first drama I've watched. I do like her facial expressions but it does go over the top and gets boring after a while of repeated action. It was supposed to be kind of a signature identifier(?) of her chara but fell short for some reason. And then of course we have PJW, oh my gosh I don't think I've ever seen any of his dramas & movies because most of it aren't my cup of tea but WOW he's really amazing! He's such a great actor and something in the way he delivers his lines makes you think of "veteran actor" immediately. I hated that he seemed pushed aside a bit, just a little, instead of being one of the main characters. Even here he was put under 'Choi Ji Hun's Group' instead of clustered with NGM and KJE ?

All in all, a 7.5/10, great but it definitely suffered from cut episodes. Also, yeah, I hate the sponsorship too gahd how many of them were there? I know it's kind of unavoidable but it's everywhere and it's so weird how they were inserted. It irks me how they make the characters say lines that sounds so obviously PPL.

Lastly, I've noticed it in some dramas too but, is scene continuity just going to be ignored randomly throughout these series? How are you going to give me a close up shot of a reaction and show me something different through a wide shot? It's not so bad here and it really might just be difficult to be consistent with the reactions but gahd once you notice it, you really can't unnotice it.

The outstanding actors are nam goongmin, park Jin woo, Joo suk tae, Choi dae Hoon and kwon hyuk bum! I will especially remember kwon hyuk bum’s name for his small yet outstanding role in here. Oh… and lee chung ah and ha sung Kwang are not bad, too! I think ha sung kwang can pass off as a villain any time soon. :D the last two episodes were adrenaline pumping. But I’m one of those few who are happy with a 12 episode drama. Looking forward to new nam goongmin projects!!

Wish there's a love spark between them in the drama. Anyway the flashback of jihun, the spark between jihun and joo young was also good and warm. Love this drama

I don't doubt it happen, I'm sure SBS probably displeased on something the writer wants to talk about in the flashback scene, since it's the important episode to bridge Jihun between the 2 polar opposite of what the writers wish to talk about. Sometime I wonder, do people need to be served in silver platter by the writer what they trying to talk in this show? The show had brilliant writing, the unrealistic ending topped it off on what the writer wants to talk about.

The show ultimately is about idealism vs realism. Just rewatch the drama, and separate the logic and illogical and you would see this point. For now, you can treat the goofy Cheon Jihun as the idealistic man while Baek Mari (before her training unser Jihun) and her family's owned firm is the definition of realist. This was blatantly shown by the writer on the 2nd scene before the very last scene of the drama where Jihun keeping the fee 1000 won despite the current inflation. What's even hilarious at the very last scene he came in as the ideal man to save the guy, only for the guy to berate him for being late. I wonder who they are mocking here, who am I kidding, it's the public who loves idealism but not the patience to acquire it.

If you're looking at first case, most watchers forgot how conveniently accurate the timing for the warrant for Jihun to use as "extortion" to the Fire Chicken gang (I'm keeping the name!). What really happened if you took time to think about it was Jihun used his connection with the sunbae in the prosecution to send a warrant that ends at 7pm when it was late afternoon Mari received the warrant where it should be the time people going back from work. It's sounds logical but no way there should be a time limit warrant. That's the idealism. Another case point was during bingo case while it is hilariously done but unrealistic. The thing about Jihun as character he is a pretty malleable person. He could be an idealist (goofy side) and realist (serious side).

What we need to discuss is how the writer implied the idealism is mostly represented by the underprivileged while the realism is done by the privileged in the show. It could be they are criticising the "American dream" concept that happened all over the world. We could deduce this based on the old guard case, where he was a realist that was learn throughout his age while his grandson was still innocent and hopeful. The poor people had unrealistic concept due to their hope for better future while the rich can be realist due to them having no worries. The disparity of wealth is real and it's eating on the society. Like Jihun said as the special prosecutor, he need you guys to keep talking about it, and he didn't mean just the case.

Episode 12 feels too smooth, at the way things just falls into place. And we need a little romance spark between Cheon Jihun and Baek Mari. Jihun gets so caught up behind the past, that it would be great if there is a little some for him in future. Great drama, excellent story, but sadly lack of that 'bang'. It was just too smooth, expected ending

Crew gets paid less because they work less ours. They scheduled to work for 14 episodes, now out of work and have to franticly search for future employ. Everyone who thinks this was a good idea is only thinking of themselves. Imagine I hire you too do a job for me and I tell you it is gonna be for 14 weeks and I'll pay you so much a week. You agree. And after 8 weeks I tell you we will close after 12, you lose two weeks. You ok with that? That is what they did here.

Writers and producers of this show are making a very big mistake for a short one season!

loka Oct 18 2022 8:57 am i've just realized, the reason jihun never take murder case since he became a lawyer (before minjae murder case) was not because he was scared like mr. sa said. maybe it was because of his traumatic experiences; the murder cases of his dad and fiancé were unsolved. his glasses, his ring in his little finger, his warm smile ... all because of his fiancé. details of this drama were superb!!

K Oct 16 2022 6:12 am If it’s Nam Koong Min’s drama (especially if it’s a comedy one), it’s an automatic yes for me! HAHA I just watched 2 episodes and I laughed a lot. First time seeing Kim Ji Eun and he paired well with Nam in this drama. I missed NKM’s psycho laugh!

Pimil Oct 13 2022 4:04 pm Qhi This episode was a bit homage for classic, Detective Conan. Part of believing in his client was part of genre convention: Jihun said at the beginning that someone who looks like murderer can't be in the detective story. And part because he also believed his client because he could notice his confidence that they would not find his father's body, what was strange in case if he was murderer because he had a little time to get rid off it perfectly. Prosecutors as well notice that fact. It was shown from the start that mother was found alive but bleeding by housekeeper and she died after getting into hospital (ep4). That indeed wasn't shown clearly in ep.6 but I guess they wanted hide it whatever their mother would stay alive or not (she would have to stay silent because she as well pretended that her husband is alive). In case of painting it was shown indirectly by dining scene at home at the night of murderer that all other people who were there actually lied (housekeeper, journalist, art curator). They all knew that father is dead and that his client couldn't as well kill him. Journalist and art curator were in other part of building but housekeeper had to witness almost everything. She probably just wasn't sure who exactly killed. She told everything to Jihun and he confronted sister before Jihyun before on-site verification. This way Jihun knew all about painting.

Overall Jihun could guess the fact that his father died before murderer because:

A. his client confidence that body can't be found without his confession

B. Fact that art curator, journalist and housekeeper lied about sold painting being last although they knew that it wasn't. What Jihun found out after getting to know that landscape except staffage was made 3 years ago. All of them had to see real paintings so he knew that they had reason to lie together in this aspect although none of them except sister claimed that his client is innocent. Also it was said that his father didn't give interview except to that journalist and avoided completely public since moving there 3 years ago. The only his painting at this house was as well from 3 years ago. This way indeed one of resolution can be that his father died around 3 years ago.

This is why I binge watch shows because I love instant gratification and 2 episodes a week isn't giving it to me. Never again. So far one of the best series I've watched this year.

Like how from start he knew the father wasnt killed by the gyy ,they never explained the reason behind his belief and lot of beliefs. Lot of things on case werent explained,and even if explained the imp scenes were edited out so we dont know how jihun is finding out so much.like how he finds out the dad was dead 3 years back, is it househelp who tells him? How he knows the painting was torn, it wasnt evrn clear how mother gets killed. Another issue both jihun and baek discuss that guy will be let out as he knew their mom was dead already but few minutes later they discuss why mother said her daughters name at hospital, i mean wasnt she dead at home already as they just talked about?

Reo Oct 07 2022 6:15 pm I love kim ji-eun, my favorite after kim tae-ri. I think it's good drama, no one real villian, so it is more realistic. Choid dae-hoon plays good part., i always impress with his acting skill. I love he is not as dirty presecutor. Sometimes you see in other dramas, there are real antagonist, it's boring. So this one is refreshing.

Namkoong is outstanding as always.

Pimil Oct 03 2022 6:17 pm Love cowboy bepob references (Cheon Ji-Hun-cowboy bepob, Mari-Faye Valentine, Sa Mu-Jang probably Jet Black). It is rare case when anime like and meta humour and ambiance well work in drama. Very good, witty dialogue and actually pretty original solution of cases. It is hard to believe that it isn't based on webtoon or manga. Despite the fact that it is comedy authors pretty well understand both law and lawyer job what it is rare. Very good comedic directing what it is big strength of SBS. And Namkoong can show his the best comedic skills. I am actually normally annoyed by Kim Ji Eun but here her role suits her (on contrary to veil).

As expected, Namkoong Min is such a great and versatile actor who can play any character and makes each one unique. Lawyer Cheon has its own smart ass, crazy and gorgeous characters! Noting like Chief Kim or any of his other characters at all.

Can't wait to see the rest of the series!!
