Ahn Joong-Hee (Lee Joon) is an actor who used to be a member of an idol group. One day, he appears in front of a family who consists Byun Han-Soo and Na Young-Sil and their 4 children including Hye-Young and Mi-Young (Jung So-Min). Joong-Hee begins to live wth them.

Notes

"Father Is Strange" takes over KBS2's Saturday & Sunday 19:55 time slot previously occupied by "The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop" and followed by "My Golden Life" on September 2, 2017.
Kim So-Yeon was first cast as older sister Hye-Young, but dropped out prior to the first script reading and filming.

A Sep 28 2022 9:52 am A good option for those who want to watch long series. I'm in episode 23 and the only problem for me is joong ahn hee attitude around his father. I found these scenes very boring, not like a successful portrayal of emotion. In any case, the eldest and middle girl of the house can drag the series.

but I don't like Joong Hee who is so irritable for no apparent reason.

but I don't understand why their house is so small with so many family members? especially when they are in their 30s. you could say this is very similar to the drama "Once Again" which both came from KBS2

I love all the main characters above ? and i hate those main characters i didn't mention especially mi-young and joong-hee. I don't like their love story so dragging and overly dramatic. ?

That drama between those 2 was obviously placed to prolong the episodes. It's tiring! It's more unrealistic than how stupid PD Cha's mom is. Identity Thedt Happens A Lot! Nobody acts like these 2 nor how this whole family did. The only 1 who had the most realistic reaction was the grandma.

This is why the only couple I like in this drama is Ra Yeong and coach Park.

Steffanie Jul 19 2022 12:59 am I liked this drama a lot. I just wished that they gave more exposure to Ra Young - coach Park couple since they have the most interesting story. Everytime their part comes up, it was really fun to watch.

Hye Young - PD Cha's story had the most exposure but is the most exhausting. I wished they cut theirs shorter and gave it to Ra Young and coach Park instead.

Just a little sad to learn that Actor Ahn and Mi Young are not together anymore in real life.

Just finished watching Feb 18 2022 2:45 pm Loved this drama....I'd been hesitating whether I should watch this drama for a very long for one reason.....There are whooping 52 episodes.....I wasn't sure if I should invest my time watching this one. Finally gave it a try and finish the entire 52 episodes in a week. Loved it....all actors played their characters so well.... it was like a dream team ensemble cast..... their cast was full of great actors and actresses...and man...they all can act. Best family drama ever.

I'm almost finishing up (watching episode 48 today yeeee) and I know I'm going to be so sad after watching the last episode. But this is what I love about these weekend dramas. They're stories that surround families and are romantic, comedic, dramatic all wrapped into one. And every single character gets development throughout the story which makes it so refreshing to watch the entirety of it. I binged this in about a week and it's definitely one of my top dramas alongside Five Enough and My Husband Got a Family. (Also I screamed so hard when Mi-Young and Joong-hee finally kissed. The two actors have amazing chemistry. When will I ever see actors with that amount of chemistry ever again T.T)

The veteran actors (parents), did great as well and their chemistry with their kids are amazing!

Drama is good overall and the cast did good with their roles.

Sushma Jun 02 2020 6:17 am Now spoiler review: This drama starts out slow, which is a good thing as you get used to the many characters, but will have you hooked in a few episodes. The production cost is low and visible, but as you progress through the drama, you stop noticing it. The acting and writing for this drama are excellent. Although I started watching for Jung So-Min, I fell for Lee Yu-Ri and Lee Joon. The story gets complicated as we progress and each character has their own story and development, so the journey is three dimensional and enjoyable. Your feelings for characters change as the story progresses, which I credit to the excellent writing. Since it is a 52-episode drama, it might feel a bit slow paced but it doesn't bother once you get past the first few episodes; the drama will grow on you. I have watched all the 52 episodes twice and can promise you, you will enjoy this.

I rate this a solid 9/10.

They all have such unique personalities, and I love every single one! Also the reality of life is greatly portrayed in this drama as each character goes through their own hardships, but the show displays how they cope, and heal, which I love. I recommended this show to so many friends, and I will probably watch again.

I felt like I was part of the Byun family...it really it made me realise how a family should behave towards each other......at first i wished to have twin daughter but this family really changed may wish to triplets I wish to give birth to three daughters smart ones like hye young and beautiful like Ra young and cool like Mi young....I wish God Almighty grant me with this wish......wow..at first I watch this drama because of Jung so min and Lee joon...now I like all the actors especially Lee yu ri....

This show actually made me feel like I was a part of the family. ALL of those chosen were in perfect harmony and synchrony and really made this a show I will watch every year. ellie Jan 23 2019 9:23 pm I finally had a chance to watch this. 52 episodes! My boyfriend found it too chaotic but I really loved the cast and it gave me lots of 'feels' from so many performances. I found myself crying a lot, yet glad that I watched it. I felt Lee Joon got better as the show went on too. Although, there were so many couples I enjoyed watching in this epic tale.

It seems these days everyone is up for another Rich Asian movie or book, while the core of a real Korean story is about family and the lengths they go to, to help each other. Maybe that's why I don't care to read nor watch what is being stereo-typed.

Its dramas like this that get me through a very cold and long winter!

Everyone had grew for the better since the beginning and the drama is really positive and had a positive ending as well.

All my negative energy had been sucked out while watching this drama and has made me think more about being positive and calm in hard situations.

There are no dull moments thay I found myself looking forward every episode. It is so fresh and heartwarming that you will love and empathize with every character (especially Byun Hye Young, her character totally rocked in this drama).

This drama deserves a place in my top 5 best k-dramas. I got so hooked that I even dream of Joong-hee & Mi-Young - and I will be really sad if Lee Joon & Jung So Min don't end up tying the knot in real life. Now that I've finished all 52 episodes, it's hard to come to terms with reality again hahahaha

A highly recommended watch!

Happened to see few clipping on my social network, Last 3 weeks was so engrossed in watching all the 52 episodes…. I can’t understand a single Korean word, but managed with English subtitles.

An awesome script, very beautifully portrayed…all the actors gave in the best. Each girl’s dream to have boyfriend/ lover /husband’s like this or like that, where as I would say one should have a husband - combination of Byun han soo, Ahn Joong hee, Chu Jung hwan, Byun Joon young, Park and Na Young Sik and intelligent as Na Miha – man that would be awesome.

Ladies you rocked, Iron ladies - Na Young Sil, Byun Hye Young, ladies who melt your hearts Byun Mi Young and Byun Ra Young, ladies who added flavour Kim Yoo-Joo, Kim Mal Boon, lee Bomi and Oh Boknye.

There were many couples, but the best Chemistry was between Ahn Joong hee and Byun Mi Young

Back ground scores takes you to a different level – Kim Hyung Joong’s – You be in my Heart will just melt you away. I didn’t understand the meaning but sure it will touch one’s soul – master piece

Honeydewykins Oct 28 2017 10:19 am I really like Lee Joon as Ahn Joong-Hee and curious about his other works, so I searched for his older dramas and was surprised that I have actually watched 2 of his dramas without knowing that this is the same actor. Lee Joon as Ryoo Tae-Oh (Gapdong) and Ma Suk-Woo (Woman with a Suitcase) are like totally different person from Ahn Joong-Hee. Those 2 were the one i rooted and love in the dramas. This proof how good Lee Joon acting is. Unlike some overrated famous actor who carry the same expression and way of talking in different roles which sometimes make me confuse that I am watching another different drama. I hope one day Lee Joon will get his breakthrough role and be as popular as Jo In Sung.

It doesn’t blend into this drama at all. Why they choose Lee Mi Do for Yoo Joo’s role? There are many more younger looking and actress who can act better than Lee Mi Do for Yoo Joo’s role. Lee Mi Do is definitely way too old for Yoo Joo’s role. What a spoiler.

The character she plays has a twin so in the drama she is playing two roles and gets revenge on the people that did her wrong. Her acting is really good in the drama I totally recommend. The drama came out in 2016 but unfortunately, not many people watched the drama so it has low ratings but I like the drama.

I never really expected I will finish this series very fast. I am downloading all the episodes first once it is completed before watching any drama because I hate the idea of waiting every episode hahaha ... anyways the 52 episodes really just gone like that and I am still looking for the next episode. I hope there would be another drama that would make me feel like giving and sharing my comment. Good job and hats off to all the cast.

This is one of the best KBS family drama I won't forget alongside "Wang's Family" where Kim Haesook is also a mom there, "What Happens to my Family", " Seoyoung, My daughter", "The Gentlemen of Wolgyesu Tailor Shop". The writer of this show deserves all the awards bcoz they kept us hooked till the end. the cliffhangers really caught you at the end. Am not sure I will ever make a time commitment to watch a weekend drama after this.

This have been my joy during those busy and stressful weekend, now that this ended already, i am saddened and at the sametime happy and satisfied. this is by far my most favorite family drama. my favorite couple is Mi young and joong hee. i have been patiently following how their love slowly bloomed. every character have played their role well. i love the storyline, the romance, the family bond, chemistry and everything about this drama. it is just a shame that it ended already but this drama will remain as one of my best. i will rewatch this for sure. i recommend this to everyone

It is really one of the best!. Lee Joon and Jung So Min should pair up in the future ? Hwa Young might have few issues but I love her. I love Lee Yu Ri too and Lee Mi Do. The couples are superb. Please make it possible for then to work with each other in the future. Thankyoy for making this drama, worth watching, the ratings prove that you are indeed a number one!

Paul Wrightsman Aug 26 2017 7:40 pm This has been a great drama but it shares a common failing with so many Korean dramas - glorification of falsehoods. If the "bad guys" lie, that is just another bad thing on their part. The "good guys" should always either tell the absolute truth or remain silent. This would not only be a good example for the viewer, it would be a way of improving the characterization of the Korean people as a whole.

Too many times lying on the part of the characters is just a lazy writer using the "easy way out" instead of doing the hard work of creative writing. People do not have to lie, it is just laziness on their part.

I particularly enjoy watching the three sisters with their very different characters. Elder sister Byun Hye-Young, the self-controlled and confident, bright and already tested lawyer who takes after her mother. Byung Mi-Young the introverted, deeply considerate and attentive second sister . Youngest sister Ra-Young whose emotions often take over, but is no pushover when it comes to her dealings with the father of her boyfriend Park Cheolsoo!

The side couples bring more fun. I find Song Ok-Suk really good as the self-absorbed, ignorant and greedy Oh Bok-Nyo, who is constantly being tested as the future mother-in-law of Byun Hye-young. You have to be very smart to play well a foolish character. (Song makes the scriptwriters look good too.)

An unexpected side show is the endless stream of comments. It is a raw bag of the sweet, the good and the horrid.Some watchers were as nasty as the Ahn Joong-Hee's fans pelting rotten eggs at Father Byun Han-Soo. I was most disgusted by ignorant and nasty comments sneering at Mother Na Young-Sil's finding a suspicious growth in her breast. Just hope that whoever wrote those ugly words will never find out personally how prolonged stress can trigger cancer.

In the final two episodes, I am waiting for more great acting by Lee Yu-ri as Byun Hye-young defending her father during his retrial and clearing the road ahead for her entire family.

A great series that I walked into by chance. Many thanks to its entire team - and also to the subbers who are so fast and good.

Didn't expect to be this dramatic tho haha. I cried a lot. Every ep was a coaster of emotions. Lee Joon and Jung So Min are so nakakakilig, I ship them so much. I wish this could get an extension (again) and I hope Lee Joon and So Min would pair up again in another drama (I know it's not possible...sighs*) Another week of waiting, but I know it's worth it. This made me fall in love with the drama in the first place and the angst ate away at that. Also the in laws of Hyeyoung consume huge amount of time every week with an irrelevant storyline. Maybe they could have reduced the episodes slightly and tightened the whole storyline and focused more on the JH and Mi Young track sweet moments. Smile,you another weekend drama did this beautifully!

We learned that the second child was using a part time job to help pay for some of her tuition or academy classes in college. We see all employed part or full time except the one studying for the exam for the fifth time. We see all the working kids contribute something to the household budget. They are older and living at home. Not odd for the oldest son and wife at all. The younger kids are just the situation today where permanent jobs are harder to find and they have a late start in the job market. It's the birth rate. Just the other day they mentioned scaling back education jobs by forty percent for new hiring leaving many students prepared to teach but no job after years of study. They will have to study some other skill and try for some other job. More sectors will be impacted. The only spoiled people are DIL mother and PD mother and father and the FIL to be of the youngest child. I think all the kids need to have their own reaction. He didn't just lie about his name, their name, dad also made them lie to the man that they were his famly. Think of the confusing for that couple thinking they were falling for a sibling! How can he trust the man and be his SIL.

Look how his fans reacted to the dad. If her connections is an issue to a rumor they will fire her. She does not have job secure like SIL. She is just an intern. To get an apartment you need hudreds of thousand of dollars. Monthly rent for a rent a room place is 300 a month. She likely has enough for that, the deposit is tiny and her elder sister said she would loan her money. She has been giving her parents a tiny amount and then saving her check for things like her future wedding and eventually moving out. Just think they are legally on the wrong registry. Every time they even sign their name or answer to their name they are being dishonest. Is the lease to the apartment valid? Are their marriages valid?

Season 2 maybe? :)

A big blow up scene and then in the next episode it was never really addressed except for a small dialogue between Han-Soo and Mi-Young. Then you never see the director whenever Ahn is being filmed in a scene. A new director is shooting the scenes.

I mean they are just lovable and funny. I particularly love the leading couple of Lee Yu-ri And Ryu Soo-Young. Jung So-min is adorable and Ryu Hwa-Young super cute(any kinship with Soo-young?) Kudos to the scripwriters and the Director for a seldom seen good tv show!

Weekend dramas in Korea really don't give much recognition as it is given and expected that people are generally in their households and just there to watch tv. So it is not something special that a weekend drama is having high ratings. Compared with Weekdays drama, if it gets high ratings, it is something to be followed by international websites and given recognition by other countries since people have work, school and other daily life obligations, giving the impression that is is really a highly and anticipated drama as korean people still watch it despite of their busy schedules. Actually this doesn't just work in Korea, but also in TV industries in other countries. :)

I don't know why I start to watch this drama, it's title isn't interesting and just few of the actors that I know... maybe I found the teasers interesting. Well everything in the drama is interesting. In every episode you will feel like "what?", "I need the next ep, I need to know.", every ep is cliffhanger that if you watch it, you can't stop thinking that you need the next ep. It was like DOTS, the feeling that you wanted to watch the next ep because you are full of questions in a positive way. The difference is this is more to reality. Most scenes happened in real life. Everything. From family, relationships of in-laws, school, love relationship, bulding a family, career... just everything. You have to watch this. Totally recommended to everyone.

At first I just watch it because curious about the romance of four of them, but as I watch and follow the story it really get me hooked with the story and everything about the drama. each character has its own story and part which make them unique and make me want to watch it more. and as I watch it, I fall in love with Yuri's acting as hyeyoung, even though at first I didn't really her character because of some reason, but after a few episodes, she's become my favorite character. and now, the story nearly at the end, I really can't wait to see what will happen next, especially about jonghee and the truth about his father. And yeah, I really can't believe myself that I finished 39 episodes just less than two weeks. writer-nim, you really did a great job (y)

I love her and Hwa Young looks like Shin Hye, her character was way too different from Age of Youth. I love the storyline, there are some scenes that I could relate myself being the 3rd child in a family of 6. Kudos and I can't wait for the next episode.

Kris Jul 10 2017 7:01 am I think the usual pattern is the wife takes care of the money. It seems her family had money so maybe cause most of it is her money? She is the one who bought the building. Divorces are hard to get when both do not want one. The person filing usually loses more of the assets unless it was for cause like cheating. He may think he is in a better financial position to not go through a legal divorce. I don't understand how a spouse can be so dependent on their spouse for money. I think he didn't go to the DIL after getting into trouble with the officetel because she yelled at him twice or embarrassment not wanting it to get back to the family. I can't believe the employee called her. Are there no privacy laws in Korea? I'm really wondering what is happening? I also wonder if the family is going to lose their money? Didn't he use a property as collateral on it? Is this just a way to put him back in the house? What ever happened with the neighbor? Remember when the DIL realized the cast was fake? Glad they are focusing on more of the cast and not just actor and the main immediate family. There is a large cast and a lot of episodes. Plenty of time for all.

In the past few eps its all about mother in law! Even up until now it is still mother in law! Bok Nyeo here is looking like the main lead and it pisses me off. She gets a lot of screentime and always about her dumb self.

Very slow progress for everyone (except for MIL), even Mi yeong and Juinghui have soooopoooo much lesser screentime. Like overall they only appeared for 5 mins! And the others too! Really wish on next episode it will be revealed so the stories can go on again.

This ep probably would make Ahn Jong Hee be the first to realize that father is really weird for some reason... I wouldnt spoil...I just want to leave the hype here that it gave me!!! Its getting more and more interesting as they add new eps in the drama and thats really something! I hope it gets the rating it deserves!

I never got bored watching every character in it and how their story is being revealed (they pretty much stay true to daily woes in life)

Of the 3 love stories, My fave couple is Ah Jong hee and Mi Young (they are not a couple yet ,for obvious reasons).Lee join is a revelation in this show and each scene of his is plain awesome and funny. Drama is really well cast and written.Has a lot to talk about family values, which is refreshing!

There are still 18 episodes left to show the viewers how his mom can fully accept Hye Young. Taking note that it is the only problem left in their story arc for them to achieve happily ever after.

KBS, please have lesser airtime for the story arc of Hye Young and Jeonghwan. They have already occupied the first 30 episodes. Please spare the remaining to the Junghui/Mi Young and Parents stories.

I always bingewatch the show starting from this episode, the succeeding episodes here are really ridiculous. Eps. 22, 28, 30 are my favorites. Hope this helps!

They have the family down below as well that could use some airtime. They are spending entirely too much time on PDs mom. Episode 32 was just too much. I loved the actress in five children. Some episodes she was good or tying to be. I'd like them to finally make her nice for a bunch of episodes. It's a long drama. There is time to spend more time on the others. Given how much time they have spent on the brother taking that test you'd think they could spend more time on him now he is married.

I just became very addicted to the flirtation and innocence of it all. Rayoung being so confused about Cheolsoo sexuality at first was amusing too. Overtime as supporting characters their small scenes became legit scene stealers, and I too wish they had more time to show their blossoming relationship, but unfortunately they are not meant to have center focus. Main couples are Hyeyoung/Junghwan & Joonhee/Miyoung and their stories will have most developing along with the awaiting truth from Byeon ahjuusi about what happened in the past, and Joonhee real biological paternity in later episodes.

While Ra Young, Coack Park, Jun Young and Yoo Joo fall as supporting characters. These supporting actors really won't have much air time as they have only supporting stories. The show is planned on focusing the stories of the main leads since the very beginning. The past and secret life of the parents and love stories of Hye Young and Mi Yeong are the center of show. So you really can't get pissed off because your favorite OTP is not and will never have much air time that will satisfy you.

I understand that they are not biological siblings (they are not even a real sibling), but they don't know that! It's like forcing sister and brother to be in romantic relationship, and it's just feel weird to me.

That's not what matter anymore. I can feel a little at ease knowing they are not real biological sibling and okay if the story continue with they fall in love with each other.

But they take off Mi Young glasses permanently from they show? I'm f***** mad. Like it's not enough her freckles taken out from her character...

From Wang's Family, to What Happens to my Family, and now this. I could cry and laugh so hard in one episode. Seriously not a single boring moment. Even my mom loves this show although she watches a week behind since she watches it on KBS World. It's tough not to spoil the drama to her lol.

The only character I found a bit annoying is Mi Young. Don't get me wrong, I love Jung So Min, but in this drama, the character just so annoying sometime. She is selfish at some point. Just me Apr 30 2017 12:16 pm I watching this drama because ra young and cheol soo.. That's all.. They both good together like seriously i love them so much in this drama.. But they both scene just 3 to 5 minute.. Like seriously?! Fact that.. Ra young in real life same age as me 93 liner.. But cheol soo 95 liner?! Omoo.. ! I thought they same age as me.. Humm.. Interesting ?

Lee Joon still the same damn good actor. He makes his character so interesting (same goes for Lee Yuri) , waiting for Mi Young's character to be worth of him...she's still "meh" for the moment.

Angela Kanagusuku Apr 25 2017 10:16 pm We started watching it and we fell in love with it from the very fist episode, we are on episode 8th and so far each episode has made us laugh so much. Byun Han-Soo family alone it's so beautiful as it always should be. The 3 daughters are so funny and special on their own ways, the son who is lazy but thanks to the three sisters he can make it work. The last drama we loved so much was "What Happens To My Family" and now this one.....Please keep up the beautiful work!

Lee Joon is like Park Hyungsik's character Jung Yoon Mi is like Nam Ji Hyun's character There's the couple with a very interesting lovelife There's the husband n wife with marital problems There's the samchon with his family not liking the grandma here tho Girl maknae is the feisty HwaYoung not liking the guy for her tho, maybe if it's really kim eoo bin not just a loolalike. I'm kind of hoping Ahn Joong-Hee and Byun Mi-Young somehow develop feelings for each other later on seeing as though Joong-Hee isn't blood related to her in any way. I also hope that Byun Ra Young and Park Cheol- Soo end up together as well even though he says he's taken. Honestly I just need more scenes with Ahn Joong-Hee and Byun Mi-Young together and Byun Ra-Young and Park Cheol-Soo together!!! :D

They show their commercials in a 10 to 11 minute block in the middle of their shows and, like this one, they cut out show content the entire time the commercials are on, so when they go back to the drama It's 10 to 11 minutes later and you have no clue what's happened. The other Korean networks don't do this, they always pick up where they left off. Wise up, KBS.

I never used to like weekend dramas because I felt like they were so long that each episode wouldn't really have much to the plot, but this drama manages to somehow make every single episode interesting and funny - at least in my opinion. I know this show is just starting, but I hope it does well because I'm already so invested in the characters <3

Lee Yuri, Lee Joon, Lee Mido & Ahn Hyoseop are 4 very recognizable actors here, same for veterans like Kim Haesook & Kim Youngchul. Wow with this being a weekend drama, 50 episodes is going to be a lot... I really hope the other actors will be able to keep up with the vets.

Except something like I Have A Lover who mostly focused on main leads despite it is weekend drama. Just hope all characters in this drama are interesting to watch.
