Set in Fukuoka City during the 1950's, Toshiyuki (Hanamaru Hakata) and his wife Chiyoko (Yasuko Tomita) runs a small grocery store in the Nakasu district of Fukuoka. Toshiyuki is enthusiastic about making mentaiko (walleye pollack roe usually served salted and spiced with red pepper). He is not satisfied with his mentaiko, but he puts effort into making it in which he can accept. One day, he hears about young Eiko's (Hana Toyoshima) pitiful situation from his son Kenichi (Soma Santoki). Kenichi and Eiko are classmates. Since her parents died, Eiko has lived with her relative.
