Set during the final years of the Edo period in Kyoto. Tajuro Kiyokawa (Kengo Kora) left his domain and became a ronin. He spends his time barely making ends meet. Next door to him, Otoyo (Mikako Tabe) runs an izakaya and she has feelings for Tajuro Kiyokawa. Tajuro Kiyokawa though is oblivious to her feelings for him. One day, Tajuro Kiyokawa's younger step brother Kazuma Kiyokawa (Ryo Kimura) arrives in Kyoto. Kazuma Kiyokawa has admired his older brother since he was little. He mistakenly believes his brother left the domain to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate. Tajuro Kiyokawa is caught by the city patrol.
