Notes

Historical drama depicts the life of King Gwanggaeto the Great (374–413) - who lead the resurgence of Goguryeo to become a major power in East Asia.

Park Min Sep 29 2023 6:16 pm The drama features the type of king that would befriend the cruelest of enemies and forgive the greatest of sins. The embodiment of a true anime protagonist! I have way too many problems with the narrative to begin counting, even when disregarding the historical accuracy aspect. Loyalty has no real weight, decades of loyalty would parish and turns into a betrayal over a small lie. The drama does a poor job bridging its narrative and filling the gaps between historical facts and a drama production storytelling. Speaking of production, I would classify it almost unwatchable from a production value standpoint. Extreme overreaction and intense movement with every move from every single male character. Borderline comical circus behavior and it's a poor portrayal of the times of wars from back then. The make up situation was rough too and you can see that from the first 10 minutes. I caught some warped mustaches not lined up with the lips and some of them weren't even sticking properly with visible tape around it. The cinematography consisted of approximately 70% of extreme face close up shots, if you aren't far enough from the screen it will cause nausea. In my opinion, the drama had its climax and highest moments around the middle parts while the rest were a boring follow up with the last 20 episodes being the worst of storytelling. The only impressive aspect of the drama was the male lead's ability to maintain a deep aggressive vocal register with every word he muttered. His throat must be destroyed! Speaking of which, he might be a great king who concurred everyone left and right but he constantly failed to protect his people.

LaLaNoNo Sep 29 2023 12:58 pm I don't recommend this drama because it will make you very angry and annoyed!! Too many stupid events that end up badly for no reason. These specific events aren't related to historical facts so they are made up by the writer. Here's a timeline for Do Yeong:

- Do Yeong first appearance was in episode 19. - Do Yeong goes missing in episode 38. - Do Yeong moves away to hide and disappear in episode 49. - The king confirms that Do Yeong is alive in episode 60. The king sends someone to bring her back but she refuses to go back. - In episode 71 the king and Do Yeong meet for the first time since episode 38 for a very brief 30 seconds. - Do Yeong dies in episode 72. - Princess Dam Joo dies in episode 85. - The queen Yak Yeon was never seen in the last 25 episodes, not even at the very end beside the king.

I think I watched 10 or more episodes without mention of his wife and sons which we KNOW existed. Nearing the end now and hope to see at least one mention of the Queen and Crown Prince. LOVE the drama :D

Lee Tae Kon are an excellent player and capable player.I love him. I was interested about the rule in Iran during Gwanggaeto's kingdom in Goguryeo, which I realized with the Sasanian Empire at the same time.

Love Park Jung-Chul (King Asin) he's mysteriously handsome, Lee Tae-Kon (Damduk), Lee In-Hye (Yakyeon), Kim Jung-Hwa (Sul Hi) she's the most beautiful & great action Korean actress I've seen.

tncdel Sep 16 2017 8:50 am Well done. Out of the over 50 Korean historical dramas I've watched, this one was definitely in the top 5 or so.

Dam Duk did a great job in the leading role. Was very impressed with his acting. And the script, although far from perfect, more or less kept the story coherent and interesting.

Edward Pastory Jun 27 2017 1:40 am This drama is very interesting and proves to be worth watching. but something are odds, I didnt get how Dol bisoo ended, because he dissapeared suddenly, we are not told whether he died or the likes. Also I was moved by how the lady who acted as Hong Mae, a food and drink seller/server at a certain local hotel, she acted bravely and nicely, I'm hunted in my mind by her voice telling her customers about what is going on the country, I tried to find more series she acted but I cant find her name in the series gwangaetto..please anyone who knows her real name you just tell me

MeMe Mar 06 2016 2:14 am This K-Drama was good. Hmm...seems like the ratings stayed the same throughout. So I don't get some saying the ratings went down after Do young died. I think you are just bias. I liked both Yakyeon and Do Young. How was YakYeon selfish? It was a difficult situation. Remember both Yakyeon and Do young could have revealed she was alive. Do young could have told Damdeok she was alive but she decided to stay hidden. The whole situation was complicated. It was sad when Do young died. It was sad when Yeon Salta, Princess Damju, Go Mu, Prince Dammang, and Damdeok's Mother died. Go Woon was kind of like a tragic character. I know Yakyeon was pregnant. I was hoping we got to see future King Jangsu. The Actresses and Actors all did a very good job. Kudos to everybody who worked on this K-Drama.

JC Nov 30 2013 1:37 am This series is one of a kind and highly recommended. After wathching it, all other sageuk korean dramas just can't compare. I always think back to Dam Duk's battle roars and his dominance as a Great Conqueror on the battlefield . Lee Tae Kon really played the character spectacularly, I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much as I did if it wasn't for him.

Very impressed with the Korean production.The only issue I had was that the subtitles went mid way in season 2 and I have been trying to get my hands on the Original DVD for 2 years now. Any idea of where I can get it?

Darksaber May 13 2013 10:40 am On History Side: One of the most successful emperor and ruler Gwanggaeto the great, he is the best on his time, successfully submit Khitan, Mohe, Baekje, Silla, Gaya, and Houyan as its vassal. A very brilliant commander, seriously he was comparable to Alexander the Great. I may Call Him Alexander the great of Asia. the sad part is he died at the age of 39. thats why his son King Jansu was the golden age of Goguryo.

On the drama part: very well executed, Dae Jo young was my favorite (but i also like Jumong, Kingdom of the wind, Queen Seon Deok) until i saw this. im not really a fan of Legend. its a very good thing that someone revive this on a very great way. be proud Korean Country you have one of the most important person in HIstory Damdeok. King Gwanggaeto the great.

Cute chic Nov 10 2012 12:02 pm Love the drama, reminds me of Jumong. Even the lead actor looks like him atimes- he's cute and hot just like Jumong. Love the settings, beautiful landscape too. My only grouse with the series is the styling, make up. Why were all the actors/ actresses hair, brows, beards dyed brown? Was it necessary for a historical drama as I don't believe people were dyeing their hair in those days. It made them look pale, bland and boring particularly the female characters. Please next time, leave the actors with their natural black hair, they look better that way. Great series all the same. Have fallen in love with Korean drama esp. the historical ones- no more Hollywood movies for me or films from my country' s movie industry known as Nollywood

Would like to know the other movies the main actor, the King has acted in. Am a big fan of his now. Love his acting and he's cute too...

Cici Jun 10 2012 6:00 pm I saw the finale last night of Gwanggaeto, The Great Conqueror. It was the best ending ever of all the historical dramas I have watched. BRAVO to everyone involved in this film! Lee Tae-Kon, you are so believable as the King and the way you ride a horse is magical. I especially love the message from King Gwanggaeto at the end to Koreans reminding them that they are his descendants. How very cool and uplifting was that? Great writing!!!

My husband thinks I'm dafted but after stumbling the subtitled in english Korean channel I have become a fairly frequent viewer. I especially like this drama the the Princess Man. Keep it coming.

Cici Oct 09 2011 7:05 pm Last night's episode 10/9/11 was incredible! The acting between Jeong Tae-Woo and Lee Tae-Kon was the best I think I have ever seen. I was sitting on the edge of my seat crying watching the forest (hunting) scene between these two. It was so heart wrenching and they were both amazing. I hope that this series can make it to the Cannes Film Festival somehow. I would give an award to everyone working on this show. I thought The King of Legend was great but as this show goes along, it gets better and better. Lee Ta-Kon has stolen my heart and KBS, you rock!

Cici Sep 26 2011 4:51 pm King Gwanggaeto the Great is an excellent followup to The King of Legend. It is a wonderful history lesson and it think it is done very well. Once again, KBS shows us a great TV series done so very well in every area.. acting, storyline, costumes, landscape, etc.

I think the ratings will continue to climb on this. It definitely deserves good ratings. Lee Tae Gon is a superb actor. He doesn't even have to say anything. His facial expressions tell you so much. That is a sign of a great actor and I know he is going to go very far. Actually, everyone in this show does a fantastic and believable portrayal of their individual character. I love, love love this movie!

I look forward to each weekend. The story is really starting to come together now and I love the fact that this is true Korean history. Thank you KBS for such quality TV and especially "thank you" for the sub-titles.
