Plot

In 1943, as Japan's WWII effort falters, a vice-admiral proposes training squadrons of "volunteer" flyers to crash their armed planes into Allied warships. Story follows the lives of kamikaze pilots, as remembered by an aging Kyushu restaurateur who cherishes their memory.

akima tendo Dec 18 2016 8:05 pm The Thunder Gods - and other Kamikaze pilots - are a key part of understanding the history of war... and that is key to the next generations. For example, how were the Americans, the British, Chinese, and Soviets like those "central actors in space," those "gods without earthly desires"? Understanding that - and more - is key to sharing memory... a key to truce on Earth. May the sharing of warrior stories help bring Nonviolence, avoiding aggression, and Nonsinning, avoiding harm to others, to this tyrant and war weary Earth. Buddha, Tao, Gods, and Goddess bless from this humble little Japanese girl.

art pinangyarihan Nov 15 2012 10:39 am this movie struck chords to the sensitivities of filipinos in relation to the wartime experiences. philippines is the most stubborn resistor of the japanese invasion, and yet even so, is the only country invaded by japan to erect a kamikaze monument in central luzon, to pay respect to a worthy opponent.

tito umali Nov 11 2012 8:54 pm I have recently been introduced to Japanese films through Red cable TV channel and have been counting my favorites of Asian films, whose contents are closer to the true Filipino traits, than depicted in Filipino films.

The film "For those we love" has instantly become one of the best, if not the best, films I have ever seen -- move over "The Sound of Music." It showed the human side of the Japanese people not only during WWII but now, which I as a Filipino has been indocrinated by negativism by Western propaganda. While my friends and I do not entirely agree on our feelings towards the Japanese as a result of WWII atrocities to Filipinos and, even Americans, at least through film I was convinced that many Japanese were silent victims of their own Imperial military.

Arigato, for enlightening one Filipino on some realities related to our Japanese fellowmen.

Showa 20 Oct 30 2011 4:44 am Watching the movie gave flesh at last to those nameless young boys who gave their lives to a senseless cause. They are not lunatics for being kamikazes. Rather, they were simply victims of an awful militaristic mentality. Never to war again.
