About
The Satos, a Japanese couple whose combined age is 150, operate a small hide-away of a Chinese restaurant, the Jinan House, in central Tokyo. Hatsue, the wife, was born in1925 in Jinan, in the Chinese province of Shandong, where she lived until 1948. She was trained in traditional Shandong cuisine, a cuisine that was largely destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. Now recognized as masters of Shandong cuisine by the Chinese government, the Satos face a turning point in their lives as chefs. Hatsue longs to return to Jinan to spend the last years of her life; she is driven by the desire to reestablish "true" Shandong cuisine in China. But her husband resists moving, while China has entered a period of rapid economic growth where novelty, not tradition, is demanded of the local cuisine. Reality is harsh. But Hatsue clings to the one Chinese love song she remembers from her youth: "Someday You Will Return."
