Cha Yo-Han (Ji Sung) is a doctor of anesthesiology. He is arrogant, but he is a genius at his work. Kang Shi-Young (Lee Se-Young) is a resident of anesthesiology who works with Cha Yo-Han. She is smart, warm and listens carefully to her patients. People, with mysterious acute or chronic pain come to the hospital. There, Cha Yo-Han and Kang Shi-Young try to find the causes of their pain.

Gilgamesh Dec 02 2022 3:56 pm Great show with more or less accurate information on the diseases they handle. The soundtrack was lovely too with music that helped build plenty of atmosphere and moody feels. Yo-Han the male lead was a charismatic and interesting character played wonderfully by Ji-sung and Kang Si Young (Lee Si Young) was cute, endearing and to me enjoyable although some comments seem to disagree. Now they are a few criticisms though, the last episode was incredibly frustrating especially with Yo-Han doing things with retarded backwards logic along with Si Young also being suddenly dumb and not rushing to him for a full 3 years. Si young was always super emphatic and sometimes nosy so to not take action for 3 years? Writers of the script probably couldn't figure out how to wrap it up. Yo-Han also says "miss you" in a call during the last episode which is never explained. The justification of the antagonist also seemed rather weak and illogical with only the lawyer having a somewhat good motivation. The whole ceribum drug mess also seemed unnecessary and fizzles out as if the writers just wanted to move on in the story quickly. Overall great show carried heavily by good actors but weak storyline. Still would recommend as a good watch. 7/10

lurpak Aug 13 2022 6:21 pm I just finished Dr. John, it's been a while since I watch medical drama, and as someone with no medical background, I enjoyed it! The story is so interesting and Ji Sung act is top notch. The way he's angry, confidently explain the disease, and the way he stares at Lee See Young, it's so sweet. But I noticed there are some plot holes in the show, like who is the one that Yohan call in last episode, is it Seok Ki Prosecutor? also, what happened with the reporter? He's suddenly gone, even when he was one of Yohan's major threat before. Also, the ex minister suspecting Yohan and Shiyoung in a relationship, what's wrong with it? Then, what happens with the hospital lawyer and the illegal no-pain-death-drug? Are they arrested? Or are they safe? I am confused

I wish we got more romantic scenes and a season 2 with same cast. And and ji sung is just best but ahi young at her place ia also adorable . I never found her character or hair annoying in any manner..

In the last episode (32nd eps), when the team hold a dinner, Cha Yo Han seems receiving a call, and said I've missed you! Who is he talking to? What's supposed to be? Can't figure it out.

KSY is really annoying, doesn't have any respect for someone's privacy, just looks busy busy busy, wants to know everything. I know she is worry but she acts too much and cross the line.

Everytime the nurse appears, I feel annoyed too.

I love dr. Min, she is very charismatic.

I wish I watched more medical scenes here.

Ben Mar 21 2022 12:14 am Apart from in TV dramas, I’ve never known of a physician being able to diagnose Fabry’s disease or any other rare storage disorder purely on history and examination alone. It also seems somewhat far-fetched to imagine that someone with Myasthenia Gravis could carve out a career as a cage fighter. Melioidosis is also a pretty uncommon diagnosis. And all this not from a specialist in internal medicine but from an anaesthesiologist who specializes in pain management. Moreover, if I suffered from a condition that predisposed me to repeated injury, Anaesthesia, which requires the maintenance of fine motor coordination, is not a great career choice. “Doctors” and “Dr Romantic” have more realistic medical scenarios. Leaving all this aside, Dr John is a fantastic series with powerful lead actors and a romance that captures your heart. Both Dr Cha and Dr Kang are adults capable of making informed decisions regarding relationships. I don’t see any problem with a mentor-mentee relationship. You can’t stop people from falling in love. Negative comments regarding Dr Kang’s hair extension and how often she cries seem so trite and inappropriate that they are best ignored. Al-in-all, this gets 9.5/10 from me. I’m docking half a point for the unrealistic medical scenarios. It’s definitely a must-see.

You didnot fully understand her character…you didn’t have to post negative comments … this is acting and she did what was in the script.. and look… She Won Best Actress… it means she carried and played the character she was suppose to play… please analyze the whys … actors play such characters because it’s what the script said…. Look at it in their standpoint….Some of you might have not experienced diseases that is not analyzed right away even after many tests are done… doctors are in a quandary too to treat and find results….. next time… try to put your feet in their shoes… and be less critical of people

This drama was arguably one of the most interesting and profound in both emotion and meaning. I thank you for placing subtitles in english because I have missed out on enjoying many other dramas. I have not watched all the episodes of Dr. John, but based on seeing the previews of the drama episodes they have captured my attention and I fully support providing high reviews to the actors in the drama. I look forward to seeing many awards for the performance of J Sung, Lee Se Young and others

Ever since episode 7, i’ve been fast forwarding when there’s her scene. At epi 9 now, my annoyance grows even greater. Doesn’t respect’s people privacy and keep on bothering him. The medical cases are good and everything else is good too except Lee Se Young.

The prosecutor and nurse character as antagonist not too strong. Their reason to hate Dr Cha seems funny for me.

Also, too bad there is not much story about another doctor other than main lead. Sometimes it's weird, why always Dr Cha and Si Young treat the same patients.

Actually I want there is more story about Si Young & Mi Rae.

Overall, this drama worth too wacth. 8/10 for me.

Rima Jun 29 2021 9:36 am I like these medical kdramas but this one is in 1 word: Top! I adored it! The storyline, the music Wow! Powerful cast, all of them very good acting. The chemistry between Ji Sung and Lee Se Young is just amazing. The 2 leads, such a powerful performance. I just love Ji Sung, what an amazing actor. Not only goodlooking and an amazing actor but also very charismatic. Wow! And the negative comments on the character of Lee Se Young: i am sorry but i dont understand why it is said that she is annoying?? Why? My opinion is she is a very good actress and if she showed concerns for Dr Cha, it is only because she is worried for his serious illness and because she cares and loves him. Nothing wrong with that!! Again: welldone to the whole cast and bravo to the 2 leads! I definitely recommend to watch this series, you will not regret it for a second!

I've started to watch this because of kwon hwa woon since his acting in mouse left an impression on me but so surprised seeing how the characters personality differs lol. Anyway I haven't finished this drama yet, but I just come to say that the female lead hair extension is so focking horrible (please read that with the British accent). why would they want her character to have long hair if they cannot manage it properly I'm livid. every time I see her hair I just wanna rip off the hair extension. and it's so noticeable too as she always tie her hair up smh

ad Mar 16 2021 8:38 pm This series is a great watch. A little bit morbid but actually uplifting. Some people go through a lot of pain and issues that some people take for granted. The story was just so simple and mostly based off of their patients but it wasn't boring at all. It was very interesting watch, and kind of reminds me of House. I highly recommend it if you like medical dramas. 98/100

Unreliable Critic Mar 15 2021 12:42 am Quite a number of loopholes, but I can forgive most of them since I enjoyed pretty much the whole thing. Jisung is great, as usual. Love everyone, even just the small characters Only issue I have is how Siyoung's excessive empathy is exactly that -- excessive, to the point of being pointless. I couldn't enjoy the romance because I just couldn't find it in me to like her. I hated how there's always a well of tears in her eyes whenever a sad music turns on in the background even if she's not the center of the scene. On the other hand, she smiles too much whenever she diagnoses a patient. Every. Single. Time. And it always looks like a mistimed, misplaced reaction. Now back to the empathy thing, maybe if the writing somehow consistently made it look like her empathy would be just crucial enough to make the patients say everything to the doctors with trust, that might've made me like her. I swear her character is the biggest loophole of all. I'd still applaud the show overall. Everything and everyone else, the side characters and back stories are good imo. I just need a bit more umph factor from Siyoung.

Piscesqueenie Dec 15 2020 9:52 am I watched this twice already, it is that good. I love medical dramas, but Doctor John not only focus on the medical cases. This drama made us reflect on the issue of pain, thin lines between life and death, prolonged treatment, hospice care, and euthanasia from few angles. As always, Ji Sung nailed it. Lee See Young, and all other cast also did a good job. The love story is just sweet, not much words need to speak, but we can feel the warmth. Definitely a must watch drama.

Even though she's not likable at first but she's actually better. I skip every cyh and ksy scenes because it's not that important. If only director focus more on the medical story than the love plotline.

sheka Nov 26 2020 12:31 pm This series was on my list in 2019 and I thought that it would be just like a typical medical drama. But hey the story is Great Daebak!. Everything is perfect, the actors really did very very very well in executing their roles, the cinematography, the twist and turns of the story, and plus good OST's. I was surprised! This is not an ordinary Medical drama. it has a lot to offer.

I really regret why did I just watch this now. I'm hooked on every episode that's why I didn't sleep until now. To me, it's just like a 16 hours movie.

now my only problem here now is I need to forget the whole story so I can Watch it all over again and cry with them huhuhuhu.

ps. lee see young and ji sung really had great chemistry in here I assure you. you'll surely fall in love with them.

For me, it's my second best drama. My first is Mr Sunshine. Go watch that too that's also amazing.

Paula Nov 21 2020 1:45 am I really enjoyed a well made drama about the hot topic of euthanasia. Not discussed enough. It was a brilliant drama, although the topic got a bit confused with the condition, is it CIVA s’th like that, so the end was a little inconclusive, not sure if Dr John was cured or not and it was a shame that his brilliance in diagnostics couldn’t be used in an end-care hospice. The acting was great and the topic of euthanasia well covered with a delightful love story not too mushy.

All in all great in these Covid times when a lot of the top actors are off the scene. Good to see some of the lesser stars these days. Hyo Seop takes part in every medical drama and acts the same person each time! Lucky he does it well!

This gets a thumbs up.

I usually don't really like medical drama, but because of this, I'm soooooo into medical drama now. This drama is so perfect, the story, the actors and actresses, even the ost are great! Cha yohan and kang siyoung's romance are not cheesy yet very very sweet. I finished watching this drama months ago but I still can't get over yohan x siyoung couple ㅠㅠ Rate this drama 10/10 because it's that perfect...

The chemistry between ji sung and lee seyoung was so good. the tears on their eyes and eye contact told more than their dialogs haha. i watched their romantic scenes over and over again. Looove them so much. Lee seyoung is so beautiful, even me woman admires her. Jisung dramas never fail haha. Great job

azie Oct 01 2020 3:23 am wow!!! just wow!!!!! such a beautiful drama. wonderful screenplay, storyline, all the actors did a very good job. especiallly jisung!!! i knew he is one of the best actors even since i watched secret love...kill me heal me and defendant. and now this!!! really good one. before watching this drama...i watched familiar wife. it was good too. and here...jisung potrayed another different character. just love it. lee se young also did very well. eventhough there is age gap, but i find it not bad at all. the reason for them to started to love each other was fair enough. i just simply love this drama. now...wondering what to watch next. cant get over this drama as of now.

han Jul 19 2020 11:46 pm watched this drama a year ago and until now im still not over it. rewatched it for 3 times already because it is THAT good. the actors portrayed their characters well, and the storyline is great. i still cry a bucket of tears whenever i watch it. i cant also deny the chemistry between jisung and seyoung.

this drama made me fell inlove with jisung. he's such a good actor and damn his visuals, acting, everything is perfect.

overall, this drama is a Must Watch!!! 10/10. i feel sorry for those who didnt watch this drama, they're missing out a masterpiece.

then boredom strikes. and I feel like I want to watch medical kdrama and I found this. I actually don't want to watch this but for the sake of lee se young. I watched it. And now boom!

I can't get over with ji sung. Damn! His eyes, his voice, everything about him now is a total package. I can't get over him. Damn. from behind the scenes of doctor john, its osts, the casts, the storyline, settings, everything. I can't get over it. it's been weeks already. And still I'm stucked.

Since then, I'm currently watching all the dramas where ji sung was in it. ???? And I'm regretting it because I only see how an amazing person he is now.

I'm hoping for the part 2. PLEASE! this 1000000000000000/10. I'm a fan of medical drama and as of now. This is the best! This is more than the best! I thought I wouldn't replaced romantic doctors as my favorite but this is on another level. Ji sung and Le seyoung. Can't wait for your good chemisty to appear again in the screen. I love you both. I love you so much. ???

We humans believe that Life is full of suffering and this drama tells us that, Pain is what makes us feel alive.

"The History of Man is the History of Pain. People born in pain and eventually die in pain. And they fight their pain throughout their entire lives. Without pain we are barely living". It is in our hands on how we can lessen and handle the pain.

I also love the characters that's why I started to idolize the Female Lead, Lee Se-young that was the first time I saw her in kdrama and I was amazed on how great her acting is. Though some of the viewers don't like her in this drama because she always cries and weak in terms on how she deal with Doctor Cha. But I guess her character has reasons to do so and it's for you to find out :P

For Doctor John, he is a man of wisdom. I don't think there is someone like him in this world but as this drama portrays how a person can make a difference to someone's life is a REAL GREAT THING. And to those who question his character because he always turned down Si Young was understandable. Because how he can love someone knowing that he has something to deal with especially his Health. He has a time bomb in his body. What he did was make himself okay before facing Si Young. It is a brave thing. :) Ji Sung is GREAT!

The chemistry of the lead characters are also one of a kind. By simply looking at each other. Makes me feel the "kilig" hihihihi

For those who will try to watch this drama. I can assure you that you may learn things about life and probably lessen your despair to others. I am a kdrama fan but only this kdrama touches my heart and soul ?.

It's a 10/10 for me.

If you time the stares in all eps, they can probably make an episode. Cringe! Gross! Love Ji Sung but there is a good reason he didn't win any awards for this role.

Cactus Feb 06 2020 9:56 am This drama was great! The actors' acting was good and they had chemistry, and i was stunned with how Ji Sung still looks that good with his age, well, there's no need to mention his acting, it was weird that he got no award for his acting in this drama.

The storyline was warm, the characters grew with every episode, as well as the relationships between the characters. At first I thought I would be a very serious medical drama, but it had some funny scenes that balance it out.

If you're looking for a medical drama to watch, I recommend this one!

Anonymous Feb 04 2020 5:05 pm Ji Song is always on the top, he's one of the best actors in the kdrama field, the acting was amazing, he gave me psychotic vibes, but at the same time I saw him as a responsible and a really good doctor, the type of doctor patients need, he was somewhat a genius as well in this drama, he shined in this drama, however i'm mentioning how good he was to cover the fact that it was poor directing, the beginning and the end were too complicated, and in a bad way, many characters jumped in and out of the drama, I wasn't personally fond of the female character, she was too weak, she couldn't challenge him as a doctor, which really annoyed me a lot, she followed him everywhere, and even when he came back after his treatment 3 years later, they haven't seen each other in all that time, yet when he came back, he was the one who solved the case of one patient, how they relied on him was annoying in so much way, and I agree of what doctor lee said, men and woman should be like cats not like puppets, if ji song wasn't in this drama i wouldn't lay my finger on it, it had such a good story, but the character of the female lead was off as I mentioned, which resulted in this stupid student-teacher '' love '' also, I mentioned how much I loved ji song as a character, but as a man, in this drama? you care about her? you love her, excuse me but leaving for all that time and not contacting her, and acting like such a conceited jerk, like when she confessed, and when she wanted to help, it really annoyed me the most how she was the one to approach him, she was definitely acting like a dumb lost puppy.

However, I was kind of irritated to the nurse (the one who was with the prosecutor) and the prosecutor. I was like, don't you guys have any other work? Why are you so obsessed with CYH? He's a free man now, he's doing his job. So what else do you want?? I don't know if I can still watch this drama because of those 2. ?

DA Jan 12 2020 8:52 am The acting and the medical support team in this drama are highly commendable. However, the romance between the two lead actors makes me cringe. Why do they follow each other everywhere without even talking? Stalker alert? And is it also acceptable in S.Korea to go into your supervisor's office when he is not around, to look on his computer files without permission? The first one is too cheesy and the latter is creepy/nosy, I think. Not to mention how the KSY character follows CYH everywhere, almost like a lost puppy.

And a couple of people here have also mentioned KSY's hair extension, which distracted me from the first episode. Why was it there in the first place? The wonderful acting from so many wonderful mature actors got disrupted just by that small thing. I couldn't get pass episode 6.

Verl Jan 06 2020 5:59 am Here goes to the best couple in ANY kdrama for 2019. Jisung and Seyoung had this overflowing chemistry throughout the drama which made me go all jittery and squirmy. I could literally FEEL their feelings for each other through the screen. Brilliant acting. Plus, don't let the medical aspect of the drama shoo you away from watching it. The medical aspect is more thrilling than informative, which is obviously better entertainment.

Alan Dec 25 2019 11:04 am I usually watched kdramas because of their actors. I watched Dr John after done with Kill Me Heal Me. I started liking Ji Sung after KMHM series. I first watched that series because of Park Seo Joon actually but eventually fall for him after watching that he could handle a character that has multiple personality disorder. I knew that it would be hard for him to change his personality in every drama or movies he acted in, but he get it done greatly! I adore him for that trait. And I actually realized that this series was released this year and felt overjoyed that I eventually watched a drama that was not released from 2 to 5 years ago. Hahaha.

elhana Nov 16 2019 9:51 am currently watching this because of jisung.. very niceeeee story but the first 2 episodes a bit boring to me (it 1-4 eps since every ep 1/2 hours) ...bit boring because they dragging it too long to solve one case.but its can be understood cause the disease is rare and they need to show that that female doctor overcome her trauma... im on ep3 now (ep 5 if look for 1/2 hours each episodes).. im sure will enjoy this drama.. I really like Jisung acting since the drama kill me heal me

And certainly one of my fave since Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim and Doctor crush (Doctors). Ji Sung And Lee Se Young have great chemistry despite the age gap in real life and on screen.Their character relationship is so mature and I loved how patient and understanding they are with each other. Age doesn't really matter indeed and lastly Ji Sung.. Wow he has this "Charisma" and i just love how he portray the character (Dr.Cha) I will definitely looking forward to his future drama.

sunflower Sep 22 2019 5:36 am I cried in every episodes (except ep 1).. One of the best medical drama that i've watch. What set Dr John apart from other medical kdrama is the theme of this drama. The main story is about Cha Yohan, a doctor who was also a patient. It's heartbreaking to see him had to burden the pain alone. Then, we have Kang Siyoung. She also cried in every episodes (and she ran a lot). I mean everyone in her shoes would've cried a lot too. Her father was bedridden and the man she loved (Cha Yohan) was going through such a difficult times. We also had Matong Team (Pain Management Center's crews) who gave a great support towards Cha Yohan. and also 2 main antagonists Prosecuter Son and Nurse Chae. At first, I was annoyed too at them but then I came to realize that both of them also a parent. Their children were being killed tragically and of course they lost their mind over it. They directed their angered towards Cha Yohan who ended the life of the killer. Lastly, the romance in this drama is fresh and beautiful. Unlike other dramas, the romance between Cha Yohan and Kang Siyoung isn't that passionate but their love story served as their biggest life supporter, Kang Siyoung gave her best to support and help Cha Yohan. In conclusion, Dr John is a totally worth watching drama. Prepare your soul and heart. It's a tearjerker drama

Ji Sung really is an amazing actor in whatever character he does. He makes everything believable. First time seeing Lee Se Young as the female lead and she did an amazing job as well. Because of their great acting, I got glued on the screen. This will go to my favorite medical drama list. Still not better than Beautiful Mind though.

This is how adult relationship is! Age is just a number, no need to be constantly clingy but always be there for you.

For medical drama, this drama is similar to other medical kdrama but the storyline keeps you going since the casts are great even the second lead actor&actress had an amazing bonding <3

Jisung never fails to amaze us with his acting aaahhhh and the main actress Lee Se Young played such a really good job in portraying her character as a doctor,sister,daughter and also Dr Cha's partner.

It is just that after 3 years they use the same phone model kinda absurd? ahahah they couldve have just change the phone model and Dr Cha comeback should change his hairstyles too hahahaha anyway good job all the directors,writers and the production.

But one thing I would like to point out, can someone tell me what happened to Han Myung-Oh and the manager of the murder institute (I forgot the name.)? Last time they were on the way to the airport but Son Seon-Ki was going to catch them. I thought in the last episode they'll show us something about it but they didn't. This is the only thing which is not clear to me. Overall, the Drama was fabulous. And when Ji Sung there then the Drama has to be perfect! Totally recommended this!

PS. - @Krus @LadyGorgeousMe the "I missed you." part I actually thought it was the doctor who used to treat Ji Sung here in Korea. But that's another part they didn't show.

Evelyn Coleman Sep 07 2019 7:17 pm I have no idea why this drama isn't 1st unless it is because it began like it might be a prison drama (and initially was why I hesitated watching it) coupled with the female lead who has not been on my favorites list. I love it, the writing is solid, the pace was fine. I enjoyed it all the way to the end. Clearly the writer drew out the last two episodes and could have ended it earlier but that's okay. The ending is satisfactory, not great, but better than a complete tragedy. Bravo! Ji Sung was excellent as usual and the new comer guy was fantastic, can't wait until he has a lead role. I predict it won't be long. You heard it here first.

How I wish I could study medicines not later than I am now. The more I watch Medical Dramas, The more I wanted to become a Doctor. The fact that this whole drama focuses on euthanasia, makes me wonder if it will take a dark turn. What if the writers wrote it so that Dr. Cha himself has to face the decision of choosing life or pain? It better not be another Me Before You, I am not ready for no sad endings. I don't hate Lee Se Young at all and I do think she is a good actress, but her character is damn weak and somewhat a damsel in distress all the time. She doesn't have an aura of a doctor (at least as a 2nd-year resident) and she seems like a rookie medical student who just keeps being in awe with whatever her teacher (CYH) does. Or at least the director should stop making KSY keeps on looking at CYH in awe or react like a little kid after getting a compliment. I usually support romance between 2 leads, but in this drama, I feel that it's really not worth it to have CYH fall in love with this girl *sigh*. And on the 14th episode, I feel like screaming "she's not worth it Yo Han" when he danger himself because of her.

About it need romance or not between the two lead, as long as its not really interfere with the main plot too much, I'll dig it. (You know sometime when the lead couple become more popular, the producer kinda milking it, and their scene together is added for the sake of fanservice, that's where I didn't like it)

I've watched almost all of his dramas and he never failed to disappoint me with his acting. I hope you can watch some of his other dramas. I recommend The Defendant, Kill me Heal Me, and Secret (these are my favorites among his works).

Looking forward to watching this drama after all episodes finish airing. I don't think I can wait week by week because it's Ji Sung so I'd rather wait and binge watch. So excited seeing good reviews with only 6 episodes out.

It was clearly evident just looking at his condition. Even worse, how can she stand there gawking later when there was an obvious medical emergency? Not only was she incompetent but also negligent in her duties as a medical practitioner in not checking in on him regularly and not know that he was getting worse. If she's not mentally competent then she should not be practicing medicine. I'm sure if that patient was your relative you would not think this doctor was smart.

I hope there will be several drama awards both for the screenwriter and director who conceived this complex character and for Lee Se-Young who gives it life in such an effortless manner. There's an upward trend from an absolutely unnecessarily tragic end to a semi-gentle end. Now can we please have a good ending? If I'm promised that, regardless of how hard the writing may get I'll keep my faith and watch it till the end.

That said, I probably praised Ji Sung the day this got confirmed already... But bromance is the word, Please?! It is so rare that Ji Sung get a second lead that can keep up with him and be as captivating/charming/naughty!!

I know I know ya gotta have cold and hot make warm w/Se Young as a youngster in the sterile less than comforting geniuses' field, but OMG Ji Sung + Kyu Hyung=Total Dream! Let LSY, super actress, tend to patient worries, and let the real chemistry be with GQ(Ji-Kyu), gentlemen I want quarterly releases of new dramas for!
