Medical drama series "Brain" involves around three doctors at prestigious Chunha University Hospital.

Lee Kang-Hoon (Shin Ha-Kyun) is an excellent, but arrogant, brain surgeon at Chunha University Hospital. He came from a poor family background and is still haunted by the painful memory of his father's death which was caused by the rejection of a doctor. Kang-Hoon has a strong desire to succeed and prove that he is the best. His rival is Joon-Suk (Jo Dong-Hyuk) who comes from a family of doctors and has basically everything. Kim Sang-Chul (Jung Jin-Young) is known as the best brain surgeon at Chunha University Hospital. He also cares about his patients and has a strong dislike for Kang-Hoon.

One day, a young man collapses at an indoor swimming pool and is sent to the hospital. The patient is Unconscious on arrival. Kang-Hoon gives the order to prepare for surgery, but Joon-Suk suggests that they call Kim Sang-Chul to perform the surgery. Kang-Hoon replies that there isn't enough time and performs the surgery himself, while other doctors observe the operation.

During the surgery, there's a dangerous moment when the patient's aneurysm ruptures. At this time, Joon-Suk calls Kim Sang-Chul. Kim Sang-Chul runs to the operation room. Meanwhile, Kang-Hoon manages the operation well and the surgery is a success, but he leaves the last clip for the vice director of the hospital. Kang-Hoon wants to gain the favor of the vice director. Because of her arrogant attitude, he isn't welcome by anybody at the hospital.

While, Kang-Hoon takes a rest in his office he receives a phone call from his younger sister. Kang-Hoon says he is busy and hangs up. He attends a conference of junior doctors. There Kang-Hoon asks questions to the junior doctors, but none of them are able to answer his questions. Kang-Hoon then asks for their chief doctor who is Ji-Hye (Choi Jung-Won). Ji-Hye is not there. Kang-Hoon yells at them to follow him.

On the way, Kang-Hoon and his partiy happens to meet Kim Sang-Chul and Ji-Hye. Kim Sang-Chul blames Kang-Hoon for not checking on his patient after the surgery.

When Kang-Hoon is back in his office, he begins to blame the others and especially Ji-Hye, who did not graduate from Chunha University. Ji-Hye talks back to Kang-Hoon. Kang-Hoon decides to seek revenge by giving out work. While Ji-Hye is writing a report asked for by Kang-Hoon, Joon-Sook surprises her. Ji-Hye replies that she can't understand why Kang-Hoon has such a strong dislike for her. Joon-Suk tells her not to confront Kang-Hoon. At the cafeteria, Kang-Hoon eats lunch alone. Joon-Suk asks Kang-Hoon to be nice to Ji-Hye. Kang-Hoon aks him whether he likes her.

"Brain" will take over the KBS2 Mon & Tue 21:55 time slot previously occupied by "Poseidon" and will be replaced by "Dream High Season 2" on January 30, 2012.
On September 20, 2011 Lee Sang-Yun, Yoon Seung-Ah, Lee Hyeon-Jin, & Kim Soo-Hyun were removed from the drama series. The four actors and actress had their first script reading on September 17, 2011. Staff believed those actors did not fit their characters due to age, acting, personality differences.

Ppps Sep 24 2018 6:46 am One of the worst kdramas that I have seen till date...horrible acting by almost the whole cast except for a few not-so-important character actors....Shin Ha Kyun overacted in each and every scene to the point that he looked less of a doctor and more of a strange drunk psychotic maniac....the series was so slow moving and monotonous that I just gave up after the thirteenth episode and just read the episodes’ synopses and fast forwarded the last episode....the ending had male chauvinist vibes with Shin Hyun getting everything that he wanted without having to listen to Yoon Ji Hye’s one sincere request....must say a complete waste of time and energy....??

I repeat this story in many times...and i hope KBS will reunite main leads (Dr lee kang hoon and Dr yoon ji hye)/ some actor and actress for SEQUENCE OF BRAIN (Brain 2)...this drama show really good with the storyline of doctor that have no more time for private life..it also show how a doctor reaaly care about their patience and patience is always no 1... Hope BRAIN 2 will coming soon with the main actor and actress is the same

I loved how it shows the human side of doctors, how unfair life is, and how you can't tell your heart who to fall in love with. I also learned a lot from this drama. Thank you KBS!

xxxzxxx Nov 02 2015 1:03 pm This drama is amazing exactly because the main male lead does not change from arrogant to pathetic like in every other drama. This drama is far more realistic in that aspect. In real life people do not change much - not even after falling in love. I'm tired of seeing cold/arrogant male leads turn pathetic lovestruck male leads just to please the female viewer fantasy.

k Nov 18 2014 10:24 pm just finishing watching Brain. Throughout entire episodes, it was pretty intense, mainly because of the main character his portraying. Yeah, very dramatic.

I think the director was trying to show in the reality, indeed there are people like the main character. I was disappointed that the main actress would fall for him(he is a jerk in a way), but it could happen in the real world.

His performance was good, but not the female actress'. And I am quite concerned her competency as a physician. Thanks god, it all drama. She should improve her acting performance. Her acting is quite bad.

The meaning is very deep in this movie.

lasa Oct 12 2014 10:08 am I saw this series after reading the good reviews but honestly I am quite disappointed..i mean the acting of the male lead is of course great.. but he potrays a real dark, arrogant, egoistic character which considering his profession as a doctor, a healer is unbearable..throughout I watchted hoping for an inch of transformation in his character but sadly my hopes went down the drain..a profession of politician would have been perfect consireding his character..and my biggest shock came when the female lead falls for such a character ..I couldnot reason as in what possible explanation can the writer have for that..

In brief , I want to say thank you to Dr lee gang Hun And Dr yoon Ji hye that help me easily discover my passion . Both of you are my idol .

Lee Sep 19 2014 1:08 pm interesting, but somewhat muddled and confused. the lee kang hoon character basically treats his mother like a pariah, and then when she turns out to have brain cancer, he does a total 180 and is finally nice to her. it seemed to me that it would have been better if he had stayed consistent toward her either way. it made me think he was a bit of an ass.

also, at some point, he jeopardizes the research project by illegally using it on his mother, to try to save her life. in the aftermath, the writers/directors made it look like it was somehow sinister how he was made to take responsibility for that which he was indeed responsible for. basically, he put the entire project into jeopardy by his unethical professional conduct, yet it's made to look like he was some kind of victim in all this. thought this was a bit weird and twisted.

also, i didn't find it believable that the yoon ji hye character was in love with him. he's so difficult, unpleasant, abrupt and generally unlikeable, it's hard to believe that she would have fallen for him. i thought that maybe his character would improve as the episodes progressed, but at episode 14, he's still pretty much of a jerk.

also, he seems pretty keen on seeking revenge for his father's "murder", but then it turns out that his father was beating his mother because he thought she was cheating on him. a father who's a wife-beater doesn't really garner my empathy or sympathy. again, the fact that his father was a wife-beater is not really addressed by the son. rather, the son is still eager to bring his father's "murderer" to justice.

all in a all a fairly muddled and extremely flawed series. i'd give 2 stars out of 5.

i guess the moral to this series is that if you're an ass but you're also a brilliant neurosurgeon, women will fall in love with you, because being a brilliant neurosurgeon makes up for otherwise fatal character flaws.

Easter Lily Oct 11 2013 6:21 pm The great achievement of this series is the character study of Lee Kang Hoon both by the writer and the actor who plays him. Now and again, these kdramas get their casting right when they choose someone with acting chops to pull off something like this.

It's a compelling performance... mesmerizing actually. It's quite refreshing to see an actor's charisma shine through their performance not just with their looks.

This was considered one of the best dramas in 2011 and please don't mistaken for that comment. It was definitely an insult to the actors and actresses for one of the smartest dramas I've seen.

I really hate this drama,and I've wasted my time by watching it .. I didn't find any reason makes ( Yoon Ji-Hye ) to fall in love with ( Lee Kang-Hoon ) - I Think it's a stupid step from the screenwriter- , the drama is Purely medical I don't know why the screenwriter insists to add the Romance side !!! , and to be honest the drama is FULL OF CONTRADICTIONS ! , to make my message brief my advise to the ones who plan to watch it is to keep away from this drama because you'll really suffer from stupid scenes, and you will regret wasting 20 hours of you life by watching this BAD drama !

When a viewer's heart BLEEDS for an admitted jerk, you know you're watching the best of kdrama. The cast is to die for, the plot is engaging and suspenseful, with touches of campy humor. Of course, one has to mention the outstanding performances of Shin Ha-Kyun and "King" (of The King and the Clown) Jung Jin-Young. Heartfelt and breathtaking. But I was hooked when I saw my beloved "Dr. Choi" of Golden Time: LEE SUNG-MIN. He almost steals the show with his campy character. The OST was perfect for the drama, also. I'm definitely going to follow the writer and director of this superb piece of work.

I don't think korean drama can display a medical drama so beatiful and preffessional. As a person who have doctoral degree in life science I enjoyed watching it and congratulate KBS for this. In the other hand the castings of drama were very excellent and match with their roles specially Lee Kang Hoo was very respectable who portrayed a intelegent and perfect man so goog. I like lovely and arogant Lee Kang Hoo so much. thanks again so much

Well.....I have nothing that reaches and maintains the "high" of this drama. Kudos to all who have made a memorable TV show! Will it be released on a DVD? Or, rerun in the future? The last episode I saw I believe was #15. Please advise. Thanks you for the English sub-titles....without them I would have been somewhat lost.

This is a great drama series that should have not been affected by the turmoil with KBS. Nonetheless, kudos to KBS for creating a great series. Hope to see more of Shin Ha Kyun and Choi Jung Won on the small screen.

The moon that embraces the sun seemed a very promising series as well.

To be honest, the four main characters have showed their own charming in this drama (especially for Shin Ha-kyun and Choi Jung Won). There will be another idol. They have to make another colaboration. Get more awards and prizes for "Brain", jia you!!!

Andrea Jan 18 2012 7:26 am Well, I was very happy to see the ending of ep.19...I was expecting there would be another romance scene... But, at ep.20, I don't know, and I don't get it !!! Why would have this ending? For me, the ending is almost dissapointed (from 1-10, my dissapoint score is 8.5). I don't think that this episode will get high ratings,and I think the fans maybe ("Maybe"!!!) dissapointed for the ending. But good work for the rest...hopefully the two of the stars (Shin Ha-kyun and Choi Jung-won) will have another collaboration in another drama/ movie.

I love dr Lee Gang Hun character in this drama, a very good acting from Shin Ha Kyun, this drama has'nt end yet but he already won an award for his role as dr Lee Gang Hun, congrats for him got Daesang award from KBS drama awards 2011. Wish to see him more often in other drama.

ST Jan 09 2012 9:57 am Wow, this is awesome. I must admit that I am a PSH fan. I watch nothing except PSH drama. However, Shin Ha Kyun caught my attention when he won the recent KBS grand award. Curious, I checked out his drama, Brain, just today. I am hooked to this drama. Really good. His acting is superb, very expressive and he is just great. Infect, all the other actors and Choi Jung Won are very good too, great acting. I love this drama....

Also it is very realistic in terms of the medical terms and procedures. Great korean drama~~~

Hopefully his romance with his subordinate -the ever compassionate Dr.Yoon Ji-Hye will hit off as a romantic pair of hard vs soft personality ( Just love the scene when Dr.Lee gave a passionate hard kiss to Ji-Hye,when she professes her love for him. Hopefully more passionate scenes from this pair plse :-) Read somewhere that Brain series will be finished by end Jan, and replaced by Dream High. Hopefully the producers of "Brain " will consider a Brain Part 2 very soon with Dr.Lee, Ji-Hye in the cast again ??? This TV series caters to all members of the family , especially the politics , job skills & rivalry we can easily identify in our daily careers be it doctors, lawyers ,bankers etc

Marc Dec 27 2011 2:14 am I discovered this show while surfing channels last week and I really thank God for it. I have to admit I haven’t really watched any medical drama in the past, let alone a single episode of ER I didn’t finish, but upon completing one episode; I would have to say it’s the best medical drama I have known! The perfect combination of office politics, suspense, romance, and medical information will entertain and educate its viewers. I commend the medical definitions shown – it gives audiences a sense of connection since they now know the meaning of the medical terms mentioned.

I am really touched and moved by Shin Ha-Kyun’s performance. It’s very realistic and even though my personality is different from Lee Ganghun, I can empathize to the loneliness he is feeling. I am all for the Lee Ganghuns of the world.

I would highly recommend Brain to everyone especially to those intending to study medicine. Brain is like a sign from heaven that I should pursue becoming a doctor. I am currently applying at medical schools for the coming school year and this series came at just the right time.

Congratulations KBS for a superb project! More power!
