A female North Korean defector leaves her ethnic Korean husband and son behind in China and flees to South Korea. 14 years later, she meets her son again. Her son holds a deep hatred for her.

Zhen Chen (Jang Dong-Yoon) lives in China. His father (Oh Gwang-Rok) is an ethnic Korean living in China. His father wants to meet his ex-wife (Lee Na-Young) before he dies. Zhen Chen travels to South Korea to meet his mother and sees her for the first time in 14 years. He is disappointed by what he finds. His mother works in a bar and lives with a scoundrel type of guy. He returns to China hurt and disappointed with his mother. Through a notebook that she gave him, Zhen Chen learns about her tragic life.

The young man is a product of rape. She was forced into having sex with the human trafficker and then pressured into prostitution to pay off the high interest loan that she owes to be trafficked into China. She was "purchased" by her husband to be his wife. Once in China, illegal North Koreans are targeted victims because they'll be send back to NK if caught.

The plot is not complicated but the performance was great. There were many gut wrenching moments by each of the actors. I've seen each of the actors in K-dramas but the standard for performance set by the producers/directors of this movie is at a much higher level.

Mona Jan 28 2022 12:04 am I like Jang Dong Yoon’s works about Nokdu and If we were a season then find out this movie. It’s such a good movie that I don’t regret to watch it at all. It’s based on true story that I was emotional when watching it. Storyline of course was well written and catchy till the end. Not simple story but not too complicated to get into the content. Main casts performed so well and were into characters. I didn’t feel the story moved slowly and least dialogue at all, it’s the misery life of Mother that director was intend to communicate to audiences thru actors’ facial expression. At beginning we may feel less dialogue but it gradually increased lines until the end. Besides, I like the movie didn’t focus on sexual, harassed and brutal scenes at all but it didn’t reduce the core of content of the movie. Mother and Zhenchen were absolutely incredible acting. I gave this movie 10/10.

Jenny Jan 12 2020 7:41 pm Who is the actual father of Zhen Chen? As there was one slot in the movie, his mother cursed and hope her unborn child will not look like the bastard. Who was she referring to? From here i understand that his true biological father was the pimp roled by Lee Yoo Joon (CEO Hwang). This is the reason why her mother is acting cold towards Zhen Chen. Correct me if my assumption is wrong.
