Yoshiko Sembon born in Manchuria in 1928, Yoshiko Senbon has worked in Japanese television since it was introduced in 1953, writing, producing and directing series (Theatre of Love, which ran from 1959 to 1963, was her first hit) as well as individual films and dramas. Selected filmography: Oh, Without This Love, Misty Flag, Love Me Slightly (1985), Tomorrow, August 8, 1945 in Nagasaki (1988), To Single Women. Since her retirement from the small screen in 1999, she has worked as an independent filmmaker.
Biography
Soon after she left from the Shin-Toho in 1952 to become a “free” actress. Kyoko Kagawa started to play lead in many of Japan’s movie classics. Such as “Okaasan”(Mother) by Mikiko Naruse, “Tokyo Monogatari”(Tokyo Story) by Yasujiro Ozu. “Chikamatsu Monogatari”(Crucified Lovers) by Kenji Mizoguchi. She also acted numerous roles for Akira Kurosawa’s master-pieces including “Donzoko”(The Lower Depths), “Tengoku to Jigoku”(High and Low), and “Akahige”(Red Beard).
In 1990, she was awarded the Yamaji Fumiko prize and Supporting actress prize of Kinema Junpou by her performance in the “Shikibu Monogatari” by Kei Kumai. In 1993, she also received the Kinuyo Tanaka award and the Best Supporting Actress of Japan Academy award by her performance in the “Maadadayo”(Literally, No, Not Yet) directed by Akira Kurosawa.
