Jeon Nok-Du (Jang Dong-Yoon) lives on an island with his father and older brother. He is smart and a good swordsman. Since he was little, his father did not let him study or go to the mainland. One day, his father and older brother are attacked by a group of female assassins. Jeon Nok-Du chases after one of the assassins to the capital. During that time, Jeon Nok-Du meets Dong Dong-Ju (Kim So-Hyun). She wants to shoot the King with her arrow, but Jeon Nok-Du saves her from trouble. Meanwhile, the assassin that Jeon Nok-Du chases goes into a widow village. To find out who and why his family was attacked, Jeon Nok-Du disguises himself as a woman and enters the widow village. There, he meets Dong Dong-Ju again. She is an apprentice to become a gisaeng.

Bagu Dec 26 2025 4:15 pm When this show came out, it didn’t seem appealing to me, so it took me years to finally watch it—and I’m glad I did. This is such a good drama. Nokdu and Dong Ju are cute together, and their chemistry is great. The story is so funny and full of emotional scenes. It’s really interesting how pretty Jang Dong Yoon looked as a woman. He is an excellent actor and excels in any role. The OST is also pretty good. Overall, I enjoyed every episode of the drama.

Iris Oct 12 2023 12:45 am This is my first time to leave a comment 'cause I can't help it. ? I really like Kim So Hyun and I binge-watch all of her series for the past few weeks, but Jang Dong Yoon stole my heart as Nokdu. Their chemistry is so high.

Also, I cannot really hate Hwang In Yeop's character as a villain. He's such a cutie. ?

Overall, this is a highly recommended drama.

Queenie Sep 16 2023 8:48 am I liked it. I am drawn to romance love stories and this was just that. I love the period pies es as well because I love the colorful costumes that both men and women wore. This story brought that, but I have a hard time watching blood and guts so the fighting was hard for me to watch. I got half way thru before I understood who was who outside of Nokdu and Dong ju’s circle and it was hard for me to follow. I thought both leading characters did a great job. I really liked Dong Yoon as the lead male lead, but I have to say Tae oh’s acting was excellent as well because I think he is an excellent actor and it was hard for me to have him be the Bad Guy! (Looking fwd to more of his work). I will also look for more of Dong Yoon’s work. I am far from an expert but I think the entire cast did well! (Aside for covering my eyes in fighting scenes)!

Back in 2020 , This became one of My fav kdramas of all time ( TOP 10 ) , and it still is to this day !!! The plot alone blew me away , Such a unique storyline . But the Cast was the Icing on the Cake , I would watch it again just for the cast . The 3 leads were exceptional , especially Kim So Hyun . She’s just too Beautiful (MA) and she always give her all . Highly Recommended To All !!!!

Especial shout out to Jung Joon Ho , he was Phenomenal in his role as King . Arguably the best performance from a King I’ve ever seen . Stole the Limelight every scene he was in especially Ep 8-9 , totally fell for him in this serious . He was so handsome too in this series , perfect for the role . Daebakkkkk !!!!

And everytime they were asked if something is wrong, their response was always, “no. Nothing. It’s nothing.” I kept screaming at the screen like, if this mf don’t say what they have to say, imma loose my sh*t. I got so tired of them dragging out everything. Just annoying af. But other than that, it was a pretty good show.

I've cried during some scenes because of how wonderful the actors were portraying their emotions. Not a single boring moment unlike others that I've seen. The chemistry between the main leads was perfect. One of the best kdramas ever.

KST Sep 15 2021 10:47 am I just finished watching the tale of nokdu. It was really an amazing series. I watched this because of kim so -hyun as I am a huge fan of her. However I found this series really interesting.This is my first time watching a series of Jang dong yoon and kim tae-oh and they both are seems to be really talented. Kim tae-ho has a good appearance as an actor. As usually kim so -hyun also acts very beautifully here. Almost all the actors have done their roles well.Apart from acting the story line is impressive. I also must say that this is my first time seeing a male actor disguised as a female in a drama. It was very funny to see a boy as a girl.Ha ha ha!!! So I think this is averagely a good historical drama to watch. This drama contain all romance ,comedy ,revenge,action and all. Just spare some time to watch this drama and hope you may not regret. Saranghae yorabun!!!

mouse Aug 22 2021 11:52 am this is frustrating to me.. im at episode 20 yet i still can't understand the plot so far... the plot is dragging, and doesn't explain the situation/background story clearly to viewers.. writer should open the secret (and the rational behind the secret) one by one so we understand.. at the beginning, why the king wants his son dead? plus, i don't understand political conflict in the drama, are the king not good enough that people (even his most loyal subject cum his best friend) don't like him and want to dethrone him? because even with all the fuss, through all the episodes so far, the king's character look promising, he looks wise and have good attribute. there were some scenes that makes him looks crazy to me (early in drama), but most of the time he got good vibe and doesn't look like a person who are incompetence or want to abandon, let alone kill his own son. i do my reading when it comes to historical drama - even if its fictional, at some level/point most writer will still stay true to the historical fact.. king gwanghaegun thou he was deposed/removed from the throne because of the coup d'etat (thus doesn't have posthumous name), he is considered by modern historian as a wise king and better king than his predecessor King Seonjo and successor King Injo (the crazy prince in this drama) which during their reign, the nation was invaded by Japan and Manchu and go thru war... that's why i want to know the reason why he became violent etc.. Then, the issue with the 2nd male lead (grand prince/king's cousin), who were once thought to be a gentleman and free spirit character became violent and crazy (writer gave him too much superpower at one shot that he became crazy and abuse his power - suddenly from an ordinary gentleman he is a prince that take over the assassins group overnight and have plan to dethrone the king).. another issue is with the female lead character (dongjoo) and her revenge plan that doesn't develop much since early episode (she wants to kill the king but it doesn't show almost at all - she still stuck with her bow and at this point, writer should appoint/make someone to help her or give her some extra power like they do with the prince).. in terms of love line, the female lead is still wishy washy, push and pull with her feelings toward male lead even after all these episode (its past midpoint/halfway thru the drama anyway - the writer still want to use love between main lead to create tension while the political feud and conflicts are not properly explained- at this point writer should create tension with the politic/conflict plus midway of the story, the main lead/plot should already have some resolve or preparing to solve it) ... and first time im watching drama that i don't really welcome child character - aengdoo, i think she blabber too much at the point that 2nd male lead knows nokdu's secret (not only the 2nd male lead got superpower, he get extra candy/secret from the kid).. most of the child character became like cupid to the main lead, but here she's become the opposite - worst she's more inclined/liking toward the crazy prince when at the beginning of the story she always honeying nokdu (pretense she's bethrothe to him) - she shows no loyalty. Overall character development is not well balanced... i mean nokdu, despite he is the male lead, he doesn't have much luck (at least at where i stop watching now) - the father who raise him don't want to tell him his birth secret, his birth father(the king) wants to kill him and his adopted father, his close brother conspiring with the 2nd male lead (the prince) to kill/abandoned him in return of saving his family/return his family's honor, his heroin always wishy washy and go to the 2nd male lead in pretense to save him (like Nokdu can't protect her or save himself) even when he always ended up saving her and possess great martial art skills.. then writer want to focus on what? romcom? saeguk? political conflict? historical fiction? heartbreaking/heartwrenching drama?.. i dont know anymore whether to watch it till the end because its dragging too much..

However, the drama on the earlier phase are more interesting for me when they didn't start a typical saeguk drama which involve a politic. The story will be more interesting when they only focus on nokdu as widow and all widow village family. I also think dongjoo character is just a plot device for the male lead story only. No character development at all, her character is so boring.

Love that the gisaeng helped the widows too. Excellent sister solidarity xxx Excellent acting (goodies and baddies), very good plot, great happy ending. What;s not to love?

I laughed a lot at the first half but felt sad for Nokdu in the second half. Jang Dong Yoon is perfect for this role. Excellent acting on both male and female part also very pretty and handsome too.

They also had great relationship off cam. I rarely watched historical dramas but this one is really great.

I have soooo much to say... I have never had such a love- hate relationship with a drama before, for such a small and easily fixable reason. Before I begin my rant, this drama was a great drama But it had so much more potential! The beginning of the drama was so all over the place. I really did not like how they decided to go about the story and events in the beginning. Once it came to the middle of the drama, it became a billion times better. I still could not shake the feeling I had initially had because I just knew had the director decided to go about putting the scenes together differently in the beginning, it would have been such a top tier drama. I think had they had focused a little more on the politics of the drama in the beginning and fixed the plot holes, I think it would have been a perfect drama. Nevertheless, it was truly a great drama aside from the faults in the beginning. The acting overall was superb, except for one specific actor. The actor is not a bad actor per say, this was just not his role. His acting was so cringey at times. Anyways I am rooting Jang Dong-Yoon. Great acting. Overall, i loved the drama, I just had a little ill feelings toward how it started. lol. Personally, I think if the tone of the drama had been more serious from the get go, it would have been one of the best drama of it's year.

Iza Jan 14 2021 2:40 am I just finished this drama. It was great. The plot twists are nice and unpredictable. How they write blend the words are incredibly beautiful. I laugh, cried, I felt angry and I fell in love with Jang Dong Yoon. He portrayed NokDu's character really nice. He is very pretty when he was pretending to be a lady and he is supeeer handsome when he is a man especially his fighting scenes. It was amazing. He's really a versatile actor. Kim So Hyun, as usual is a really great actress. She's so cute at some scenes and very mature on the serious scenes. Her eyes are very expressive that you'll really feel connected on her even when she doesn't speak a word. Thumbs up to the staffs and cast. I also admired the cutie girl, Aeng Du. She deserves the award. Kang Tae Oh was also impressive. I will not tell more about him because I might spoil the others. All in all this drama is so great and highly recommended. It's worth a re-watch and is now one of my favorites.

Trish Aug 22 2020 4:22 pm I still can't move on from this drama. I fell in love with Jang Dong-Yoon so I started watching his other shows. I finished Just Dance and A Poem A Day. I'm on ep 3 of School 2017 right now. I still watch some clips of this drama because he had the best chemistry with Kim So Hyun and I hope they can have a project together again. I don't care if it's a modern drama or historical again. I just want to see them together again. I am soooo in love with Nokdu and Dong Ju's love story. I never get tired of their sweet scenes. They are oooozing with chemistry.

Early of drama is Romance Comedy genre, after the half part of drama become typical Politic Historical genre, and at the end back to Romance Comedy.

I've watched around 200 kdramas, and this style of drama really rare. The genre keep changing and the pace of drama really good.. The romance, comedy, action and the chemistry between the leads really top of the charts.

This drama is my top 10 among 200 kdrama I've watched.

Jaao Jul 04 2020 7:47 pm This drama doesn't make sense to me at first because what kind of king who doesn't want to pass the throne? A king should produce an heir but why does the king wants his child dead? Then I watched it again then I understand. When the king heard what the shaman said that a boy will be born at a certain day will be the king, he panicked because he was still a crown prince that time. He thought that the crown will skip him thus, the crown will be pass to that boy then he will never be king. So he told the queen which was still a crown princess that time that their son is dead. He became the king but he still wants Nokdu to die because he wants to live as a king and die as a king. Even after all the fuss he created, the crowned was still snatched from him. The more you hold onto something, the more you lose grip. Sadly, Nokdu was a poor victim.

The romance of Nokdu and Dongju keep me sane during these hard times. I really like the chemistry of JDY and KSY. Hoping and praying for a reunion project for them in the near future. The actors and actresses are good; it was the plot that made it so-so. For me, they have dragged the story for so long, retardation of the narrative.

All the characters development and the pacing of the storyline is really perfect for me. The romance between nokdu and dongjoo is so beautiful, pure and the sweetest. All the actors did so well in delivering their best abilities. How is jang dong yoon such a good actor when he had no plan to act before debut?? I am amazed. He has expressive eyes. So much potential! I can see him becoming one of the biggest lead actors in korea in a few years. Kim so hyun has always been so talented but this is definitely my fave work of hers. The scene where she cried over the unconscious nokdu at ep 31 broke my heart. She expressed it so well that I cried with her. Everyone did so well. I have already watched the drama four times and I am planning to rewatch it again. It never gets old.

I don't ship drama couples after finishing a drama but this one's an exception. I hope I see dongyoon and sohyun in a drama together again.

I love the ending. Seeing yulmu become the king is the perfect ending for him, neither good or bad. He became king but a lonely spot for him. The ending is actually based on what happened in history, king injoo became king but he became a puppet by the aristocrats. I wouldn't want nokdu in the throne.

Song Mar 20 2020 6:14 am This drama was wonderful and the end was unexpected... but a happy end! Jang Dong Yoon’s eyes gave me so many feelings about his character. I didn’t like so much Kim So Hyun‘S caracter, it was a lil’ bit flat but somehow I understand this because she lost her family when she was a child. She suffered much. Also I felt sorry for Kang Tae Oh’s character... I think I need a few days to get back to this wonderful drama. I laugh to much in the first half and I cried a lot in the second part. For me is the best drama of 2019!

And of course, kang tae oh too. The last drama ive watched hes in was on my first first love. He was really funny on that drama and the fact that he could also pull off an antogonist role shows that he definitely deserved that best new actor role.

I'm really picky, I have loads of dramas I started without finishing even halfway. Yet, I couldnt stop with this, the storyline and the chemistry of the characters was fun. I finished this in less than two days. It was that exciting. I love it, it deserves more recognition. I'm going through post drama depression right now, I'll miss this show and the characters. ?

The kissing scene between Nokdu and Yul Mu is epic and funny. Also when Nokdu chased Yul Mu till he fall in the water.

kpopandgrime Feb 27 2020 1:01 am LOOOL; the king still lost his throne after all hassle. What a beautiful drama; from start to finish and like many others i finished this within 2 days. This is why I love Historical kdramas and nothing is more entartaining; first few episodes i was dying of laughter than last 5-7 episodes i was in my feelings. unlike many other kdramas this was not rushed at all and everything fell into place; loved the last 30 minutes (the last part will forever be memorable).

fell in love with the whole cast; no lie here, the chemistry in this drama was unmatched. it wasnt only the chemistry between the leads but also the supporting roles were amazing. also fell in love with the scar ost (be sure to check it out); such a memorable ost and whenever i hear it i will be reminded of this wonderful drama. DAEBAK!!!

The plot was really interesting, I'm all for the romance and stuff but the story of Nokdu was the most interesting to me. I keep wondering what he will do and what will happen to him and the King. The last episode was unexpected, more like unusual which is okay since He was able to keep his love ones safe. However, it also felt like a little messy because they showed a very long happy ending in the middle, a bit of the Grand Prince' story but cut short and rush, and lastly happy again.

You'll also laugh how the male lead brings his inner womanself, i think its hilarious, his one of the beautiful actor i've seen. On the later part of the story you will feel pain, both leads are great actors they can cry beautifully even with a floodlike tears, they're great. For JDY my first time to appreciate his acting and its superb! I cried during his last conversation with the king. His really good.

I can compare this one with the moon embraces the sun. All the cast giving their best. Cant stop smiling when see these 2 cute lovey dovey couple, and crying along with nok du’s pain.

There’s no love triangle, a happy ending, brilliant cast, lots of laugh, proper amount of tears. No complicated intrigue like heavier saeguk drama, and lots of beautiful cast. Almost perfect!

I really like to see the drama written based on aeng doo character. The little actress give me a lot of laugh! Interesting if seeing that char grow up to be skilled swordsman like her father.

9/10!!!

The entirety of the plot is based on the king who had his infant son killed to prevent him from being king. <-- This right here MADE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. What king doesn't want to pass down their throne to his son???!!! The prophecy was that the child born on a certain day would be king. It would've made more sense if the prophecy was something along the line of "the child born on this day would bring harm to the country" <-- this would've made more sense in why the king would want to kill his son. Overall, it was an okay drama.

The actors really did a good job, i personally like the chemistry between the king and nokdu. I already expected the ending would be like this because historically king gwanghae deposed from the throne by king injo and moved to an island with his wife, but in the drama seems like king injo killed him. And one last thing, I'm so in love with their ost, they have fantastic ost track list.

Aya Dec 13 2019 9:18 am This is one of the best historical dramas I've ever watched. The plot was well-written and I love how all the romantic, comedy, sad, and action scenes were portrayed and put together as a whole, it was all in perfect amount and nothing seems forced in the story.

The actors didn't disappoint too. It is already a given that Kim So Hyun will slay the role but I didn't expect that Jang Dong Yoon will slay too. He was perfectly casted as Nok Du. It wasn't obvious that he doesn't had any acting workshops because he did so well!!! Tae-Oh also! I didn't expected him to act like that. He did a good job too.

So Hyun and Dong Yoon should work together again, their chemistry is a bomb! It so hard to move on from this drama :'<

This drama and the actors deserves an award!!

Until, now I have watched only two 100 Days My Prince and this one and I really loved both of them. The OST and background music was really good. I won't say anything about acting as we all know how good each actor was. I just want to say Kang Tae-Oh should now get some lead roles. He's really a good actor. And Kim So-Hyun looks much more beautiful in her short hair. I totally recommend this Drama. Really enjoyed!

I always skip the fight scene stuff esp in historical drama, just because i only focus on the storyline.

Sometimes Jang Dong Yoon just looks like EXO Kyungsoo or ZEA Im Sihwan. ?? Well this is my favs kdrama that I love for this year, worth waiting too. Just think hoe can i move on from this drama ?

He has shown his versatility being good in both drama and comedy immersing himself into the role. The way he cries is like a leaking faucet, amazing his tears just flow even on cue to fit the scene. Looking forward to the final episode and to his future projects.

In historical drama, they can't avoid political background, but this one, is not heavy plot. Just simple as the title. You will love the chemistry between the lead actors. And it's my first time watching JDY and i entirely love his play, he's one of my favs actor now beside Ji Chang Wook, Yeo jin Goo, Seo in Guk & Park Seo Joon ? KSY too! I love her character here, and feels like she comfortable play this character (natural acting) ofcourse.

I'm talking about a different drama, its historical musical drama and it was aired in Arirang tv if i remember it correctly.. its not kim so hyun the female character. The main male lead in the drama played a gisaeng or a dancer, he disguise as a girl because at that time, boys are not allowed to become a dance. but he really loves to dance.

Meia Apr 03 2019 9:27 pm There was a similarity of the story that was aired in Arirang tv .. i forgot the title.. i think the boy wants to be a dancer but i think it was not allowed that time so he disguise himself as a girl then he meets a girl who was a dancer but she didnt know he was guy.. xD It was a historical musical and i really like the main guy because he really looks like a girl.. I like gender bender plot so i will absolitely watch this!
