Hotaro Oreki (Kento Yamazaki) is a freshman in high school. He decides to join the Classic Literature Club following his older sister's recommendation. There, Hotaro Oreki meets Eru Chitanda (Alice Hirose). They come across a Hyouka anthology which was published 33 years ago. Hotaro Oreki and Eru Chitanda begin to reveal the truth related to the Hyouka anthology, their school and school festival.

Jun Apr 20 2019 10:06 am This movie is actually very good. Kento did a great job. The female lead doesn't really suit the age but her acting is fine. Everyone, please see the movie based on what the movie wants to deliver not based on the casts. Don't judge a book by it's cover and don't judge a movie by it's casts.

. Mar 01 2019 10:38 am I don't know why a lot of people are so against Kento for taking all the lead roles either. Though I haven't watched this movie but I've watched a lot of his other works and I think he's a fine actor. I know sometimes it can be frustrating when there are also heaps of other great actors in Japan and you wish you could see your idol in some action too but we're not the ones on site, I trust that there must be a good reason why many directors chose for Kento to take the lead in their projects. Not only is he a great actor, maybe he's a really great co-worker and a really good person with a really good reputation in the entertainment industry!

I love kento so much but I'm sorry this movie was extremely boring to the point that I got mad at myself. Lol sorry for those who love it, this is just my opinion.

Oreki Apr 08 2018 12:10 am Movie is fine as mystery story. Cast looks old but acting is fine. Attention to detail is great and cinematography is decent. The school used is same as crows zero or was it blue spring? Overall is good intro to watching the anime

Tory Apr 03 2018 3:30 am Although the cast is a big letdown for me, this movie does deserve some credit. Kento delivers a better performance than I expected. Alice tries her best too. The thing I appreciate the most about this movie is its depiction of Chitanda's uncle, Sekitani Jun (called Sekiya Jun in this version). The movie makes this tragic character very relatable, very specific, very real (with two actors playing this role), in contrast to the way the anime portrays him as a shadow for most of the time. That's why for the first time I was about to burst into tears when his story was unveiled. And also for this reason, after watching the movie, I really hope the author will give the character Sekitani Jun a better conclusion in a later volume of the novel series.

If that makes me a hater, then yes, I am a hater lol. Honestly, I don't care who plays the role as long as they manage to make it look real. There have been instances where I could never connect with the person playing a particular character. Even in Orange, I did feel uncomfortable with him, but as the movie progressed I overcame that.

I think he's the best actor to play the role, that's why i'm wondering why there're so many ppl disagree with this instead of the fact that alice hirose taking the role as chitanda. For me, that's the bad part of this movie. It's not that alice hirose's acting is not good or else, but i just can't see her as chitanda. She's beautiful but not cute. I mean, she doesn't give that "cute feeling" at all *sigh*

But as an audience, i enjoy his performance and i can see him improving a lot over the years across his movie projects. Plus, its his time to shine. I believe he was offered these roles because he deserves them. And about Hyouka, Kento is the best choice for Oreki.

chichi Jul 02 2017 7:54 pm Why is everybody complaining about Yamazaki playing another highschool "romance" movie? First off, it's not a romance movie. It's mystery. Second, Kento Yamazaki was the best option out there to play Oreki, for goodness sake.

You should all be grateful that somebody who looks and sounds like a nonchalant person like Yamazaki can play Oreki who's known for being nonchalant. You all should know Yamazaki suits that kind of role the greatest. Plus, he's a decent actor. You don't get this chance very often.

Can you just accept? As long as Japan isn't over the Yamazaki Kento hype, he's going to get all the roles whatever he's best suited and best played. I'm getting tired of people like you guys.

Rather than thinking about him playing too much, please think about the sake of the movie instead.

You lot think about how he's oversaturated, but to be honest there's nobody else I can think of doing Oreki best aside from him. Kamiki? No. Taishi? No. Masataka? No. Suda? No. Yamada? No. Fukushi? No. Shuhei? No. Yudai? No. Nakajima Kento? Maybe. But all in all, I'm glad it was Yamazaki. I'm assured he's going to do well since this is not a new kind of character role for him.

Im actually glad Kento is going to play Oreki coz he got the face right. But I actually hoped to see someone more age appropriate to be casted as they were both definitely have grown out of their high school self years ago. But they were both cute. And please make Oreki, Oreki and not other. Because he's one of the most brilliant anime character i ever encountered and I just admire his character so much.
