As a comet approaches the earth for the first time in a 1,000 years, female high school student Mitsuha Miyamizu lives in a quiet small village. She envies those that live in Tokyo. Mitsuha Miyamizu begins to experience a weird dream in which she becomes a male high school student in Tokyo.
Meanwhile, Taki Tachibana is a male high school student in Tokyo. He begins to have a weird dream that he becomes a female high school living in a small village. Soon, Mitsuha Miyamizu & Taki Tachibana realize that they are not dreaming and they actually switch bodies. They begin to communicate with each other by leaving notes on their cellphones.
