A story of three female friends who are 39-years-old.

Cha Mi-Jo (Son Ye-Jin) was born and raised by wealthy parents. She is now 39-years-old and works as a dermatologist at her own clinic in Gangnam, Seoul. Jung Chan-Young (Jeon Mi-Do) is one of Cha Mi-Jo's close female friends. She works as an acting coach.

purple tinted satin May 15 2022 2:35 pm (SPOILERS) It's imperfect, some of you guys may dislikes how it is delivered, but this is exactly how this kind of story should be told. Though the storyline of the whole episodes is kinda patched here and there, and last episode is undeniably rushed, I still believe even one more episode would be unnecessary. It has done its best to show the three friends' last journeys as well as show their background to assure us how the one who leave will be remembered and those left behind will continue to live—and it's succeed, the spotlight is in the right place in the ending scene. It won't get any better than this or it will become too soap opera material.

The leap from ep 11 to 12 is kinda far so ep 12 is somewhat feels detached, but the emotions of ep 12 is so RAW. If you decided to bear with this drama till the end, you'll understand why I said what I said in my 1st paragraph. Prop to the actors' acting, years of experience don't lie. Thanks for choosing this topic for your "40 somethings" drama, JTBC.

In the same genre "Be Melodramatic " was way well made !

purple tinted satin Apr 11 2022 10:51 am Regardless of all sadness and downer, we have to admit that the acting is top notch. Maybe because almost all actors are kind of veterans and that maturity doesn't lie. The flow and dynamic between the girls or between the pairs is so natural. The dialogs from line to line is smart and well-suited, picked and spoken. Honestly I kinda surprised of SYJ's acting, I think she's brilliant (only) in pure romance dramas, but she's so nailed it here too. And finally a worthy opponent and worthy role for Yeon Woo Jin! He looks so natural and comfortable here, being the mature man character that he is. As for Jeon Mido, some says her character wasted her talent. For me it's not like that, it's more like Chanyoung's character is the one that is wasted. I mean she deserves better, about men and about life. So it's not that Jeon Mido's talent is wasted, instead she plays this "deserves-better" character brilliantly.

What I regret about this drama is that if the love stories (especially Mijo's) is going to get most of the spotlight, it shouldn't have promoting the premise of the women's friendship. It would be better if the premise was like the drama "WWW". Because most of the time, Joohee doesn't feel like part of the group or as one of the main characters and it's a shame.

kimb Apr 05 2022 4:48 pm So, episode 12 was the last one? What about Cha Mi-Jo and Jang Joo-Hee and their story? About the marriage and the child Mi-Jo wanted to adopt? I really enjoyed the show. Thought after ep 12, there would be a next one. But looking here 12 was the last one. If that's the case, i'm honestly quit disappointed... :(

Renwa Apr 04 2022 7:29 pm Wanted to love this drama as I do love each of the actors. And yes, I watched it to the end with devoted attention. And yes, I so value close female friends. The core theme of deep friendship indeed resonated for me. That said, I am left with an uncomfortable feeling not wanting to admit I didn’t enjoy this drama. The friendship of these three women ultimately bordered on pathological. Why even bring up male love interests when they proved mismatched, superfluous & emotionally impenetrable to these three women. I felt sorry for the male characters. I’m a big cryer myself watching these dramas but something was off for me on this one. Sorry.

Terry Apr 04 2022 12:31 pm Basic and not that original at all. THe only romance I was cheering on was Chan Young's and that is surprising since he was married to that witch. It was kinda creepy the way Joo Hee schemed on the chef when he really just wanted a friend and her looking like his mother. I actually thought she was really pretty just could use a better wardrobe that didn't age her. But no there was no romance between them at all and it wasn't the least bit realistic. Cringy really. I didn't like MiJo with Seon U either. He carried the whole relationship and she just seemed like he bothered her or it bothered her to have to deal with him. I understand what they tried to portray in the series but it definitely wasn't giving that at all. I wasn't sad and I didn't feel like they were either.

Sometimes make me laugh and loved but sometimes i'm crying a river. 10/10 from me! You should watch it at least once in a lifetime!!

Water Apr 03 2022 4:18 am Here's my first look as someone who has watched (similar styled) JTBC dramas like Age of Youth and Be Melodramatic. First episode is as expected, it really feels like the 40s version of two other dramas. The characters, backstory, vibes, styles, worries, issues accurately describes the state of the (pre) 40s.

Reading from the comments here, it seems that many regret the sad tone because there might be a character who dies. I know it sucks, but I think that's what it is about. The older your age the more death slowly became a common topic. Of course it kinda drag the mood not like two other dramas, but it's realistic.

Still reading from the comments, I get the impression that the romance story is narrated more than the friendship story—and some find it boring midway. I've only watched episode 1 so I can't judge yet, but if that's true, it's a shame. Because Age of Youth and Be Melodramatic tell a balanced story of romance and friendship, the slice-of-life theme is more pronounced—not just romance at a certain age.

Anyway, I liked the first episode and there's a lot more to comment on. Despite all the ups and downs I hope I can finish this drama with the feeling that this drama is the perfect closing to JTBC's age-based slice-of-life drama trilogy.

Really nice and realistic storyline And also great with the flow and how it evolve out Made me really reflect what I am doing and if i were to be any of the characters POV

Though all ep posed a bit of sadness here and there, ep 6 and 12 was the killers.

Last ep cried since their brunch to the christmas tree to the actual thing happening.

Jeon Mido is such a jewel! Hope she appears more in dramas Funny how she was a doctor in Hospital playlist to playing a sick person in this show. But the whole trio was great, even their BFs

I think only thing I would have love to see more was Joo Hee and Hyeon Jun CP. Maybe more POV of how felt about Joo Hee :)

10/10! Warm and great about life & friendship

Son Ye Jin so beautiful and talented, she shines, Jeon Mi Do quirky and sweet and adorable and Kim Ji Hyun grew on me as she didn’t have a great part at the start, but by the end I found her totally loveable. The 3 so well chosen, the boyfriends too, especially Mi Do’s but I wish she had married him before the end. An unusual concept delicately directed. Well done, I loved it. Will not forget it easily.

I am sure I am not the only one who has lost some one (s) close. I felt the ingrained closeness between the three women. The elevator scene was so memorable for me. even when you know the end is coming you can push reality away as you go about the day to day. Then the elevator door closes and just like that the dear one is no longer there. I could continue on how this film touched me but it is not necessary. I loved the series very much.

Friendship goals are portrayed in this drama and a little bit of romance, but the main focus was friendship. I love how the writer(s) showed the value of friendship through their ups and downs even after death they showed that life goes on but it’s still painful to be without one of your best friends. Watch this drama, I guarantee it’s well written and the actors and actresses did an outstanding job executing their parts. But, I must warn you it’s a major tear jerker. So get your box of tissues ready and also get ready to laugh as well. I admire the creator of this drama so much. Job well done

RAnthony Mar 31 2022 1:19 pm Possible spoiler alert! Just watched the last episode. In my opinion the brunch is one of the most tender, loving scenes that I have ever watched in my 70 years. The deep caring of the three close friends that also encompassed their families and Chan-Young's list of special people left me touched and in awe of the quality of acting, storyline, and directing. While the series might have had a few ups and downs, this last episode was excellent to the end. My own special friends of 56+ years are already gone, so I can empathize with the two characters in the finale. My thanks to all involved in this production and for stirring up fond memories.

I hope they show much more about the friendship of the trio in their last 30s with terminally ill friend (not just the romance of Mijo-Seonu) and giving Joohee's story justice. I mean, I didn't see Joohee as one of the female leads since her part were so short.

In-depth writing Mar 24 2022 11:49 pm What I like about this drama is that it not only focuses on the three female leads, but their families too. The orphan angle is good, but maybe a little unrealistic.

Why would Kim So-won’s adoptive father disown her.  He adopted her in the first place.  It makes no sense. If she was an evil child or a criminal it might make a little sense.  If he actually disliked orphans he would never have adopted her.  It’s not like he visited a pet shop and fell in love with a puppy that grew up to be full grown dog.

As for Mi-Jo’s mother I can see this a little. Mi-jo is 39 years old her birth mother has nothing to with raising her. She may share some genetic traits, but it was her upbringing that made her the person she became.

just got to the part fo chanyoung's mom reprimanding her daughter without hearing the whole story first, relishing the thought of her regret and sadness after she finds out about her daughter's impending death. such ignorant uneducated asian mom, serves her right. ha ha ha.

Honest review, we will see relationship between ChaMijo, Chanyoung and Joohee from age of 19 until now 39. This is a real life drama. So, many characters and plots are similar to our daily lives. This is not about friendship only, also include a story about family and how this trio find their soulmate.

You will cry a lot.

Jeon Mi Do also very good and the other friend, very well chosen by the casting. I love this and don’t often watch episode by episode. Well chosen Netflix, it is unfolding slowly but cleverly.

I think Mijo and Sunwoo’s sister portray the turmoil felt by adoptees being displaced from our natural lineage. It’s wonderful to see adoption discussed in main stream media.

For those commenting about being grateful about our lives. We are thankful, for all the new opportunities, new love given, but the turmoil the characters portray come from losing your biological parents and culture. It makes identity difficult to navigate, potentially because it’s unconventional circumstance, not really shown & it’s always important to have representation in media. So there’s multiple layers to the experience.

If it helps you to understand our experience, imagine waking up tomorrow morning in your neighbour’s house, and suddenly they refer to themselves as you’re parents (disregarding you already have a set of parents and family). Bit disorienting and confusing right? And, everyone around you says “be grateful” for everything your neighbours are doing and the life they are providing you. Of course you’re grateful but also jarring to surpress questions about what happened to your parents prior. You’d probably have heaps of questions about it.

Please spend sometime understanding adoption before making comments like that. Myself and my younger sister are adopted from Korea to Australia.

Superb acting, writing, directing and cinematography. Laughing one minute, crying the next and all the while learning valuable life lessons about, truly living, friendship, love and respect. Don't criticize, just sit back and soak in some of the best drama, equal to Shakespeare and anything to come out of cinematic history!

Ars choi Mar 03 2022 2:32 pm Now we're in the 6th episode.... I have written my praises to the casts especially Jeon Mido, she's the star of the show. Now, I will just comment about the characters and storyline. I have a hard time to understand Cha Mi Jo's character, I know that not everyone can heal fast, and It's possible that Mi Jo's wound is too big for her to handle so she got panic attacks, but I also agree that Mi Jo can only heal if she feels grateful and appreciate her dazzling life more. She's luckier than a lot of orphans but I feel like she's the less grateful one. Joo Hee, I feel bad for her character, the write really play favorites, i feel like she's always left out, and the other two are much closer to each other. even in today's episode, no spoiler but I hope her friends can take time and give her focused attention as well. Everything about Chanyoung's character is nice but I wish they will make her parents funny people, but they don't have the same energy as Chanyoung, I expected Chanyoung grow to be a cool and eccentric woman because of hee parents but I guess they aren't. Seon-u character is nice and dreamy but that's it. I find Yeon woo jin way more charming in other dramas than this.

Thirty nine is worth watching because I can feel various emotion. jinseok and chanyoung's emotional affair is so wrong yet so deep and I can understand them, I just hope jinseok will divorce her wife soon and start coming to Chanyoung as a decent man. I hope next episodes will be better

Kinda pick me girl character. She pushes joo hee away even she has right to know what happen to chan young & feels like her burden is the most heaviest of all. Not too mention about her ‘family’ problem eventho she has the most kind family that raise her. Such an ungrateful bichh. It kinda weird to me also that the doctor tell her instead of the patient herself

Mary Mar 01 2022 5:18 am Having an emotional affair is just as culpable as physical one. The fact that it took almost turning 40 for chanyong to heed her friends words regarding it is realistic. I felt that it did a good job making it not a decent thing both r involved in, but without overly blaming all parties including the wife for her deceit. Its especially good that she came to this decision b4 her illness. All 3 seem quite happy in their unmarried state, even if joohee says she ll do it someday. They r not obsessing over meeting guys, except when they run into handsome men randomly n get giddy. Which is totally normal, that even married women do it. Its totally normal for best friends to tease abt guys, even if ur 14 or 40! Also as a med person, sometimes docs share early results with close friends of patient who r part of med community b4 sending final results to patient. In this case, mijo s friend did tbe checkup so he would have told her his suspicions 1st, b4 finalising all results n sending to patient. She got the call within 2 days of checkup so most likely he wanted to give his fellow doc n friend a heads up. Time between her telling chanyong n mijo knowing is abt 2 days, probably she told the other doc to wait until she could break the info to chanyong. Even a doctor ll breakdown if she hears her best friend s gonna die soon, so her taking sometime is normal. even though they tried not telling joohe cos of her lottery news, they couldnt hide it in the end, n that s the strength of their friendship. Waiting for more episodes, though sad that mido s character dies, loved her since HP.

Also loving the back story of how all 3 grew up so differnet yet so well adjusted.. Due to their wonderful parents.. All 3 sets r amazing and unique. Chanyong s mom and her fighting, and her dad taking her side is so typical daddy s girl. And even though joohee s mom scold after her drinking, she still is funny n caring there. And joohee being responsible n worrying back abt her mom s disease. Mijo a romantic dad n bossy sis r classic! Especially love how they all came together for her in the last episode.

Spring Feb 25 2022 9:08 pm I once saw a makjang show from some other country, in that show one character sufferd from serious illness early stage and doctor tells that to accompanying relative and tasks her to convey it to patient like here, relative is a biatch she never tells and patient never gets treatment and ends up dying. Moral of story: doctors should always directly convey to patients or writers should start writing better.

Ika Feb 24 2022 8:54 am I like the first two episode going smoothly, it is just impossible that the doctor did not tell the patients directly and immediately espescially when they suspect stage four. And tell to the friend, which is not even blood related? Also, she put the depressed and anger to everyone without no one feel annoyed when everytime they asked the answer is "i am okay".

Is the drama try to portrait how pathethic it is being a single at your 39? I cannot see where the drama going.. i expected to see a strong , enough character that make people feel "it is okay even if you re single".

Please writer, the cast are awesome and many people love it. Please don't ruin it.

Hey..we are best friends growing old but let me delay telling Chan-Young she is dying. Let me also hide from Joo-Hee and also pretend like I am so depressed and hide everything myself. Hey..I am also alone going to deal with Chan-Young..lets leave out Joo-Hee the "best friend" when i went to confront her. The entire ordeal of how Mi-Jo is dealing is just......no words describe. The writers and directors of this series must be not having any real life friends.

Also why did the doctor telling Mi-Jo instead of the patient herself.

Iso Feb 23 2022 11:27 am Loved episode three but as I was watching, I couldn’t help but think how the burden of knowing about your friend’s illness is wrong of the writer. I get that Mi-Jo is also a doctor (dermatologist) but the responsibility of telling a patient about a deadly illness shouldn’t be on a friend but that of the doctor.

Anyway, just my two cents. Loved the feel of friendship and romance. Can’t wait for more!

The guys are well chosen too, acting well. I love this drama and have been waiting for it. I don’t usually watch a drama week by week, but I couldn’t resist.

aisha Feb 19 2022 3:23 pm Done watching the 2nd ep and it fulfills my expectations. having top actors like Son Ye Jin, Jeon Mido, Kim Jihyun and Yeon Woo Jin is not a waste the storyline is really nice and calm, but make me immersed I wish SYJ & YWJ chemistry will be better though, i felt like there's a wall between them, but I think it's understandable according to the situation the characters were in, I hope they develop more chemistry in the next episodes

All praise to Jeon Mido, she actually really shines here, both acting qnd chemistry wise. I hope people will start calling Thirty Nine as Jeon Mido's remarkable drama, because she's really great

Waiting for the Episode 3. Not clear about the end if she is just thinking about that or they will go from the future to the past to explain the time between... i am trying to avoid spoiler!

geeho Feb 18 2022 4:00 pm so far so good. the girls are fun to watch. like the subtle humour. wonder why they feel the need to forecast chna young's impending death. mi-do is one of the leads, she isnt going to just disappear after the first few episodes, weird.

good writer judging from past works. it is nice not to be inundated with makjang villains and hour-long episodes with flashbacks every three minutes - apparently that is how long they think the average viewer can remember the plot line before needing a reminder ;).

Midos work is overshadowing everyones and in all 3 leads mido and jihyun are standing out best. If they really had to kill a character i wish it was not midoo's , they should have gone for mijoo. There is nothing special about either mijo character except for unnecessarily given most screentime

This is a beautiful drama about life, friendship, relationship which has a great plot and beautiful cinematography. Incredible acting from all the actors and actresses. Amazing chemistry between the 3 best friend and the main couple.

Son Ye Jin's performance never disappoints. I love how she chose her work perfectly, every works of her are literally great. Fantastic actress which I respect a lot. Love to see that Son Ye Jin and Yeon Woo Jin have a great chemistry. I love Yeon Woo Jin's role as Kim Seonu - the quiet, warm, and gentleman doctor who has such a kind personality fits well with Cha Mi Joo. Yeon Woo Jin's acting is amazing, as expected from him. The three best friends are also having great chemistry - their personalities fit each other really well. Jeon Mi Do's acting is incredible as always. As for Kim Ji Hyun, this is the second time I watch her drama (after Hometown Chachacha) and I love her acting as well.

The plot is really good. 1 hour long drama which never felt boring. Love the story, watching this drama feels refreshing and calming. It has the funny moments and sad moments at the same time - makes me laugh at first then makes me shed a tear. Looking forward for the next episodes - and hopefully they will consider to make more episodes or season 2 because 12 episodes truly didn't enough for me. I keep wanting more and more. Well done for the production teams!

Jane Feb 17 2022 5:42 pm First 2 eps starts the drama off really well especially for a 12 ep series! I appreciate the casting ages of the 3 main female leads. They are all hitting age 40 this year, making the drama so much more intriguing! I love that they give us the death of a character immediately in ep 1 to show us her death isn't important but how she lives up to it in the remaining eps. It's really nice seeing a story that also normalizes the choice to remain unmarried in your late 30s with not just one but all three friends! I can't wait to see how this story develops and how each character grows in the last year of their 30s. Son Ye Jin's acting is phenomenal in the 2nd ep. Jeon Mi Do is such a natural, I honestly wish she appeared on the small screen earlier. Definitely one of my favorite female actress after Hospital Playlist! As for Kim Ji Hyun, it's my first time seeing her take a lead role and she's so perfect for it! The actors' chemistry is beyond my expectations and I love the comic relief, considering the story will have a heaviness to it.

The dialogue/story is not convoluted - I feel it’s very true amongst friends or soon to be lovers and about life in general (including the terminal illness and death storyline). The acting by all the 6 main actors are awesome! Wish this story/show could be long than the 12 episodes.

What is that about? Is it because the age-appropriate male leads are more expensive? Would have loved some over 40 male leads. One of those male leads is 26. I get the whole fascination with older woman and you get man, but come on! It's now tired. Lee Dong-wook, Hyun Bin, Gong Yoo, Song Seung-heon, So Ji-sub, Nam Goong Min, Jang Hyuk. So many to choose from.

The story of their friendship is normal among best friends, just like my own with my friends. So I can relate and at the same time learning some more things from their story. The drama is light, heartwarming and entertaining which is what I like.

Chan youngs married bf part was not explained despite 1hr 18 mins and hence felt agonizing. Its first episode so too early to judge. All in all its good and heartwarming but maybe i will give it a miss.

Please write a happy end or offer closure in episode 16...even if we're lucky enough to love this drama so much that we're blessed with a second season. This is how much I love Son Ye-Jin. She always deserves the happiest ending. If she's happy, we all win. Fighting!

I hope this drama is those kind of dramas, I think JTBC is the best when it comes to slice of life dramas. Those always feels like young adult / chicklit books adaptation and JTBC always did it good.
