Ray is a 30 something engineer obsessed with Gundam toys. He has a motto not to become close to anyone. During his mother's funeral he showed no emotions. His life is further turned upside when he is forced to live with his older brother Maury and younger sister Lisa. Older brother Maury was a pianist but is now a recluse. Younger sister Lisa is a college student who tends to look down on those around her. Also in there home is their Japanese grandmother who doesn't speak English at all.

Ray's daily life is at first completely shaken, but soon the siblings and their grandmother form a bond and start to have compassion for one another ...

I like the pace,(in a market plagued with "action" "adventure" and superficiality. The performances of the young actors and of the Ba Chan are impeccable, I did love one other film by this director,her story telling is flawless,

Bogeyman Mar 26 2013 4:58 pm True, this is a quirky film. It leaves some sub plots unfinished. It runs slowly, and leaves much to guessing, like how Ray was adopted but he never follows up on his past, or why half Japanese kids don't speak a word of Japanese, not even "good morning". Some parts make no sense. But, both my wife and I cried watching it. Ba-chan was great. Everyone should have a Ba-chan like her. Heart warming, but funny movie. It is a must see.

Dianne Terauchi Mar 17 2013 7:16 am This film has everything. Grandmother, Grandchildren, a grandpiano, goyza and a cat named teacher, "sensei". The pace is slow but it gives you time to enjoy it more. It has many warm moments. I found this at the rental shop. No one I know has heard of this film. I liked it very much. A must see. The air-guitar was so funny. Don't miss it at the end. Goyza is eaten a lot in Japan but it's more like a China dish. It is true we do enjoy making it. The toilet is true too.

tosk Jul 03 2011 5:05 pm An interesting little film, and well-shot. For me, Maury's arc was the most entertaining of the bunch. If I were to criticise anything, I would say the tone of the film was a little uneven in places, and some story elements seemed to lead nowhere - we see Ray's co-worker bugging him about getting a date, but it never pans out into anything, and the air-guitar subplot vs. the poetry subplot seems oddly incomplete.

Masato Motai's stoic performance was pitch-perfect, and her young co-stars held their own for the most part. It's a quirky little film that doesn't try too hard to be "quirky".
