Set during the Edo Period, "Sword of Desperation" tells the unforgetteable story of swordsman Kanemi Sanzawmon (Etsushi Toyokawa). Three years ago, Kanemi Sanzawmon killed Renko (Megumi Seki), the mistress of the powerful daimyo Tabu Ukyou (Jun Murakami) & a woman causing corruption.

Unexpectedly, Kanemi Sanzawon received a lenient punishement and was able to return to his clan in only one year.

After the death of his wife Mutsue (Naho Toda), Kanemi Sanzawon lives with and takes care of Mutsue's niece Satoo (Chizuru Ikewaki). Kanemi is unaware of Satoo's secret affections for him, but she is able to change his outlook on life. Meanwhile, Kanemi Sanzawon's unique "bird-catching" sword fighting technique will be tested when he must battle Hayatonosho Obiya (Koji Kikkawa) ...

Renato M. Casia Mar 17 2012 1:55 am As always i am impressed with Japanese movies for authentic sword play and teaching principles depicted in the film without exaggeration. In Sword of Desperation the bird spearing technique was shown; how it was invented and how it was to be perfected; how it can be applied in actual sword fight as demonstrated by the movie characters Kanemi Sanzawmon and Hayatonosho Obiya duel. Also a teaching principle to catch a foxy enemy was depicted in the film. In the opening of the move a NU dance ceremony was performed and and we hear the voice of the demon saying " two demons went to do dog hunting to catch the fox ultimately." The principle teaches us that foxes hid by blending with the dogs that chased them, and to catch the fox is to kill all dogs and finally the fox is exposed.
