Plot

In 1997, architect Sung-Hyun (Lee Jung-Jae) moves into the home 'Il Mare' that his estranged father built. One day, he pulls out a letter from his mailbox. The letter is from a young woman who addresses the new occupant of the 'Il Mare' house. Sung-Hyun is surprised because he is the only person to have moved into the home. More letters arrive and in those letters her predictions are accurate. She warns about a flurry of snow on a certain day in January of 1998 and an ensuing flu virus.

Eun-Joo (Gianna Jun) is convinced that her letter has traveled back in time to December of 1997 and starts writing regularly to Sung-Hyun. Eun-Joo decides to ask Sung-Hyun to find her cassette recorder, which she lost at a train station. Sung-Hyun goes to the train station and gets a glimpse of Eun-Joo ...

Mel C Apr 26 2023 12:11 pm Haven't watched The Lake House, but this is a really good movie. Never got bored watching it. First time I saw the younger actors. Just came across the list of movies in Netflix and was curious. Glad that I decided to watch it - 1:45am here in PH :)

Mara Apr 17 2023 9:23 am When I found out that The Lake House was adapted from this film I looked for this original version. And while the ending seems a little rushed I was so engrossed in it. I think this was the classier take of the story. Nice to see the younger Lee Jung-Jae and Gianna Jun. Korea does stories with a time travel element so well (lookin' at you, Signal and Tunnel)!

Nadia Sep 05 2019 1:10 pm This movie was doing fine up to the last 15 mins. Then I was like WTF?!! Huh?!! Korean movies tend to be like that. It's like the writers and directors feel happy endings are too cliche. Well, these kinds of endings have become cliched Korean romantic movie endings for me. It's not that we want a happy ending, we just want a satisfying one for the characters and for us who spent 90+ minutes watching it. And if anyone dares say that the ending is realistic Ima go off. This whole movie has nothing realistic about it so no ending would've been "realistic".

I'm a big fan of the remake, The Lakehouse. It's one of my favorite movies and while I still think Il Mare has a beautiful story, the execution was terrible and there were a few things lacking in the story after the first hour of it. The ending felt rushed and somewhat random. As if the writer ran out of ideas and just threw something in there.

beeks Nov 24 2018 3:01 am lots of plot holes because you know...different timelines and such ..... BUT other than that.... a simple and beautifully acted story with beautiful nostalgic feeling shots. The two main leads did a wonderful job portraying the slow and sweet falling in love feeling and two people who encouraged one another when they both were in a down part of their life. ///i love the two main actors. period <3

ace Nov 01 2014 8:03 am I watched this the first time about 10 or 12 years ago. At the time I thought it pretty good but upon just watching it again I have to say there is a whole lot to like about this film. Visually it was simple, sublime and intimate. From a storytelling standpoint I can see why it was remake. The acting by the leads was really tight. Nothing too much or too far from the story showed on their faces or is heard in their voices.

Not that it is flawless. Much of the 3rd act feels pigeon-holed into the story a bit clunkily just to set up the dramatic conflict and then the crucial finishes. Rather than feeling it happens organically.

Still, all-in-all I would say it is quite a pleasant movie to while away a few hours.

Nalyah Jun 16 2009 11:46 am Yes, yes I have to admit it- I love ‘love stories’ :D, hehe. This one is one of my fav ones. I was totally enchanted by the plot, music and performances (Lee Jeong-Jae and Jeon Ji-Hyeon were really amazing in this movie). The American version, though enjoyable, seemed less plausible (if you can say that here^^) and I really enjoyed the ending more in ‘Il Mare’.
