Plot

When a drunken woman walks into the men's bathroom at a karaoke bar and vomits on mild-mannered off duty police officer Zhendong (Ye Liu), Zhendong decides to help the woman get home. The woman is Peiru (Shu Qi), an aggressive Hong Kong woman who has moved to Beijing to work as a real estate agent. Peiru is also dating her wealthy married boss. Zhendong lives a quiet life, putting his needs behind his autistic brother whom he takes care of.

When the couple meets again, Zhendong falls for the brash woman, but Peiru thinks only of Zhendong as a friend. She is preoccupied with her shaky relationship with her boss and possibly losing her job. Eventually Peiru borrows all of Zhendong's savings only to flee back to Hong Kong.

Several years later, Peiru comes back to Beijing after realizing Zhendong is the man for her, but Zhendong's health has taken a turn for the worse ...

Wowzers Dec 25 2021 11:44 pm Seen movie clips of Shu Qi. Never watched her movies until very recent. A Beautiful Life was very good, with a confusing ending which I still haven’t figured out.

As a man, I am going to admit that the scene of Zhendong wanting his job back for his wife and future child nearly split me in half. Any man that has had to face the frailty of his self image when you cannot provide for your family understands that scene. If he’s ever dealt with depression, he knows that scene very well. He’ll rarely, almost never show a woman that side out of fear of her leaving.

Overall, a great movie.

Chloe Jan 29 2016 8:31 pm What a beautiful and sad love story. The performances are award-worthy! Shu Qi is one very talented lady. She made you believe her heartbreak and deep sadness. She made you believe how much she loved Feng Zhen Dong. Ye Liu, you are just as amazing as Shu Qi. Your portrayal of Zhen Dong was so believeable it made your audience feel the desolation when you were diagnosed; wanted to reach into the film and hold you, help you. This is one great story. Kudos to the writers! Excellent choice of cast! Love Anthony Wong!!!

NewKDramaAddict Dec 24 2011 12:29 pm I plan on commenting on every movie that I see!! A heart-retching story told beautifully. I cannot imagine watching someone deteriorate like this as a result of a work-related illness; cancer is one thing but something that could have possibly been avoided?! Scary! To see the female character, Peiru grow and become more responsible was great to see when you compare her to the beginning; Zhendong was such an amazing person, so willing to sacrifice everything for the woman he loved!! The ending was so, so sad! Could not help but cry! Wonderful movie! Definitely recommend it.
