Bio
Born, bred and resides in Amami-Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture.
Shaken and inspired by his female contemporary singer, Atari began to teach himself shimauta (Amami-Oshima’s local folk song) at high school.
While studying social anthropology at Ryukyu University, he continued to sing and won the Best New Artist prize at the Amami Minyo Taisho (Amami Folk Song Awards) in 2000. In the same year, he won the overall championship at the Amami Rengo Taikai (Amami Consortium Contest) hosted by Japan Folk Song Association.
Major debut single “Sorezoreni” was released March 1, 2006, which was picked for heavy rotation at radio and TV stations nationwide. In Kyushu,it added excitement by being chosen for heavy rotation at all FM stationsin the region.
At “Japan Night”, an event that took place at Shanghai’s ARK on May 26, 2006, Atari performed a few songs with other Japanese artists, and received high acclaim from Shanghai natives.
Atari’s second, double-side-A single “Omoideno Sugu Sobade / Mahiruno Hanabi” was released June 28, 2006. With lyrics written by Yasushi Akimoto, “Omoideno Sugu Sobade” was chosen theme song of movie Chakushin Ari Final.
At the same time, in other countries, Hong Kong’s superstar Andy Lau covered Atari’s debut single “Sorezoreni” in Cantonese. Entitled “Beautiful Woman To Come”, it is included in his new album Voice released in August 2006.
In addition, in the upcoming new album Natsukashano Shima, which was be released in October, there is a duet with Chinese female singer Han Xue (Cecilia Han).
In releasing Atari’s first album, Chu Dong Xin Xian, Taiwan preceded the rest of the world. The album marked #4 on Taiwan’s g-music chart, as well as ranking at #1 on the Yahoo! Music Taiwan Chart. Atari followed up on the release by performing at Simple Life, an event held in Huasan, Taipei.
On March 13, 2007, Atari performed at the Japan-China Super Live In Beijing. He represented Japan along with W-inds, Maki Goto, and Ayaka Hirahara.
Third single “Hana” released April 11, 2007. With lyrics by tako Okachimachi and music by Naotaro Moriyama, it debuted in the top 20 on the Oricon weekly single chart, peaked at #13 on the daily chart as of April 24, and still selling strong.
On July 11, 2007, Atari released much-awaited first album Yurai Hana. The album, after debuting at #7 on the Oricon weekly chart, has been selling steadily since. The momentum was accelerated with his first solo tour in September and October, performing in four cities in Japan and one abroad (Taipei, Taiwan) and touching people’s hearts. In Nov 14, 4th single "Tanewo Makuhibi" was released, which is an ending theme for popular animation BLEACH. Thanks to this tie-in, he gained fan base from wholly new fans.
In addition, the song "Yasoukyoku-Nocturne-" was used as official image song for the movie "Lust, Caution" directed by Ang Lee released early 2008. In spring 2008, he was cast as a campaign model for casual fashion brand Gap.
