Plot

Tono Takaki (Mizuhashi Kenji) and Sinohara Akari (Kondo Yoshimi) had been apart since they left elementary school, however, they kept in touch through correspondence as they had feelings for each other. One day in winter, Takaki left Tokyo and set off for Tochigi where Akari lives. The train is delayed by heavy snow and he is alone in his carriage, as the time ticks away. Long after the agreed meeting time, the two are finally reunited in a waiting room at a small station.

This statement is not hyperbole, but it does come with conditions. Unless you have lived through some serious heartache and been left with scars that will never fully heal, you will not be privy to the kind of insight required to fully experience the depth and power at work here. At its core this film is about our inability to let go of the past and how clinging to shadows prevents us from embracing our present in order to build the future. And when we do come to the realization that we've locked ourselves in the past, how can we escape when the mechanism of closure can never be obtained?

I am sure that many reading this will watch 5cm and just have no idea why anyone loves this movie. And maybe that's better. Count yourself lucky that you have not yet felt the depth of pain which allows you to connect with this story. For the rest of us damaged ones, the story will stay with you forever and you'll find yourself rewatching again and again as the years go by and emotional weight grows heavier within your heart.

Now, if after reading this you think this may be the kind of anime you'd like I will warn you. Make sure that you clear your calendar for the day. Plan to be emotionally crippled and non-functional after the first watch. You've been warned.
