Kim Dok-Ja (Ahn Hyo-Seop) is an ordinary office worker. He is a big fan of obscure fantasy web novel "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World," which has just completed its 10 year run. Kim Dok-Ja is the only person who has read the web novel to its end and knows how it ends. One day, Kim Dok-Ja faces the world turning into the web novel "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World." Meanwhile ,Yoo Joong-Hyeok (Lee Min-Ho) is the main character in "Three Ways to Survive in a Ruined World." He has the special ability to return to life after he dies. He is a handsome man with superb fighting skills.

Yoo Joong-Hyeok and Kim Dok-Ja begin an epic journey to save the world. People around them include Yoo Sang-A (Chae Soo-Bin), Lee Hyeon-Seong (Shin Seung-Ho) , Gong Pil-Doo (Park Ho-San), Jung Hee-Won (Nana), Han Myeong-O (Choi Young-Joon) and Lee Ji-Hye (Kim Ji-Soo).

bie Mar 27 2026 1:14 pm I just watched this film without high expectations due to the negative reviews. It turned out to be not as bad as they said. Yes, the script is stiff, but what can you expect from characters who have just met and are immediately forced to work together to save the world? We're bound to feel awkward and awkward when we meet new people, aren't we?

Just try to focus on the storyline. The novel or manga is packed into a short 2-hour run time, so a lot of detail is bound to be sacrificed. At least the moral message it's trying to convey is clearly conveyed.

Hopefully, there will be a sequel. It would be a shame if those of us who enjoyed watching it were left hanging waiting for the next film, wouldn't it? ;)

There are a lot of flaws in the first minutes of the movie. 1st, the message sent by dokja to the author. He congratulated him and he was given a txt copy of the novel. But the movie shows dokja mocking the author after reading it for 10 years? Lol. 2nd, i would not drill into the ant farm, because grasshoppers were in the manwha, but the fact that the time was shortened to 20 minutes at the get go. It does not create the panic that was needed. 3rd, the zombie, the zombie never overpowered dokja, only when namjoon zombie showed up, it was an impkrtant piece because thay is when he avquired the bookmark for namjoon. 4th, the bridge, the restriction for crossing the bridge is literally to go in even numbers, because there are 5 of them, that created an issue, that's why mr. Han carried sangah to the bridge and dokja ask hyeonsong to carry gilyeong, but that never happened. Additionally, the last question juengyeok ask dokja before letting him go is, if he really is a prophet, will he let him fall or not? And dokja get it right. On the monster belly, dokja never agreed to 5050 share with bihyeong, and the number of thorns dpkja buy is 3 with some oils not 999. Where the heck would he get 99,900 at the beginning of the show. Plus, he bought a whistle like item, huiwon doesnt have a gas mask, dokja gave him the whistle to stabilized her breathing.

This is just the 1st 30 minutes. The show literally just focus on the stars and not the story. They should do another one, this is a disgrace to the novel and the manwha

Can see why novel fans are disappointed at the changes to the storyline/arcs but honestly, it's really not that big of an issue. The movie was still watchable and entertaining. (A lot of the negative reviewers are exaggerating).

Funky cgi here in like 2 scenes made me laugh a bit. It could go unnoticed though so no minuses here.

Acting was nice. Cast has some big names some rising stars. It was announced that this will be a 5-part movie series so I will be looking forward to that.

Tootsie Sep 04 2025 4:06 am I'm going to treat this movie as a whole different entity from the Omniscient Reader manhwa because that is the only way to stay sane. This is just a fantasy movie that has a similar title to the manhwa.

With that in mind, this is an okay movie, but why do these famous actors act kinda...bad? lol. They're okay acting in romance, comedy dramas, but for this fantasy action-filled movie, maybe their acting skill are still lacking.

Except for Jung Sung-Il my man is hot in every role hehe

It’s not even that they changed things — it’s that they didn’t understand a single thing about what ORV is. Kim Dokja’s sacrifice? Meaningless. Yoo Joonghyuk? Hollow. The others? Cardboard cutouts.

JIEA Jul 30 2025 8:32 pm First of all, I just want to say that although I'm one of those who read the novel and the manhwa(webtoon), I can separate the novel, manhwa and adaptation. I tend to treat them as separate entity. And this is my take on this. I haven't watch the film yet but from what I can see from the trailers and the leaked videos, it's very disappointing and aggravating. For someone like me who likes this kind of films it's made very poorly. Don't even get me started with the acting. I'm not saying that their acting is bad, it's just kinda awkward to watch and I feel like their acting is lacking. There's this scene I saw where they first met Jihye. I'm so annoyed with the way she hold her weapon, the rifle. It's like she's hugging some pillow and it kinda ruin the scene of her being supposed to be cool. Now, I haven't really watch much of the film yet, just some leaked scenes from those who've watched it so I can't really judge them for that yet. I'm just saying that it's very annoying to watch(that scene).

Now, let's talk about the plot. We can get the gist of the plot just from watching the trailer right? And I can't say that I am okay with it. Okay, I get it. This is an adaptation. But to change the plot that much? Goodness, I can't even describe how I'm feeling. I've read an article in some site where the director is comparing this LA to the One Piece LA. And how that this LA is getting hated while One Piece is not although there are also changes in it. And let's be real. You can't compare them. This LA (based on the plot) is not even closed to the One Piece LA. There's not much changes in the One Piece LA you know? While this? No need to talk. I just can't grasp what the director is thinking by comparing the two. They change so much of the ORV's plot by making this LA. And I understand why this film is getting so much hate. Just imagine Luffy dreaming to become the Fleet Admiral of the Marines, that's how we see the Dokja in this LA. Him being a hero and wanting to save world? Don't joke around, sure he love some people from the world but that doesn't mean he wanted to save the world. He WANTED to save the protagonist not the world. He wanted to see the PROTAGONIST not the world. By changing this important part of the plot, you've earn yourself a lot of haters. I'm not even going to talk about the changing of the weapon and their characteristics that made them being loved by the readers because if I do, another long monologue will be added.

To those non-readers who watched the film or to those who watched the film just to support their favourite actors. Let me tell you this, you can get annoyed or get angry or be disappointed by us (novel and manhwa readers) for leaving such bad reviews even without watching the whole film but get this, what you're feeling doesn't even amount the rage and dissatisfaction we're feeling right now. we (novel and manhwa readers) can at least understand some of your feeling but you (non-readers) won't be able to understand ours. Because before the official release of the trailers, the plot and the whole film, we are the first one who are excited and anticipated such film. And that's why our disappointment after it's official release is also this bad. That's just what this is all about. You guys support the film however and how much you want and we will do our best to protect the novel where it all started.

This review is posted not to discredit the actors and their efforts in making the film but to express how much this film ruined one of the greatest novel I've read in my life. This novel is not just some novel for some of us. This novel has become our comfort when we are tired of the world and it's people. It save us from thinking to much and from giving up. And now seeing the novel that we cherished be brought to life and ending to be disappointed. We just can't accept it. Some of you may dislike this review but go on, I'll take it and just think of how much privilege you are.

They just need to follow the main plot...the heart of the novel. The work was well-loved because the readers love the stories...why messed with it???

And the cast full of beautiful faces who cannot act didn't help. I bet they wasted most of their budget paying for these big names with mediocre/questionable acting skills hoping their big names will help save the movie. This really is not it.

It is, without exaggeration, one of the worst adaptations I’ve ever seen. The writers, director, and production team have not only failed to capture the heart of the novel, but they’ve actively disrespected its core themes, characters, and emotional depth.

Kim Dokja, the heart and soul of ORV, has been completely rewritten. The quiet, traumatized man who found meaning and survival in a novel that no one else read is now portrayed as a bully who hates the very book that once saved him? How does that make sense? The emotional nuance, the loneliness, the complexity — all erased.

Then there’s Yoo Sangah — one of the strongest, most morally complex female characters in the novel. A character who kills when she must, protects fiercely, and never fits into typical passive roles — reduced to nothing more than a healer. A role she would never accept in the original story. This isn’t just bad writing; it’s blatant misogyny. The writers took one of the most empowering female figures in Korean webnovel history and stripped her down to a trope.

As if that weren’t enough, a made-up character is suddenly Kim Dokja’s “favorite”? When that character doesn’t even exist in the novel? The disrespect to the original lore is infuriating.

And the technical aspects? The casting is painfully off. The height difference between characters that symbolized so much of their dynamics — gone. Even basic visual details like Yoo Joonghyuk’s hair aren’t right. If you can’t even get the protagonist’s look right, how are we supposed to trust you with the story?

This adaptation is a disgrace — to the fans, to the original author, and to storytelling as a whole.

The result of this adaptation is clearly a lack of respect toward those who came to watch it—whether for the novel or for the actors. They made both sides fight and criticize each other, when the real problem is the director.

If you're a fan of either side and truly support the actors or the original work, stop watching this or giving it a good rating. Otherwise, you're just showing that your story or your favorite actor is something that can be stepped on like it's worthless.

Sonata Jul 24 2025 8:40 am Note: This critique comes from a novel and manhwa reader. Biased? No. This is an Adaptation of Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint. Which means that the theme, plot, and the dynamic essence should be similar if not the same.

1) Justice To The Characters Not only did the movie failed with the actors (no hate to the actors as they're only doing their job), but I blame the director for choosing them. First of all, height differences. It's not a big of a deal, I can agree—but to not even managed to follow such a basic detail for the story can already show how incompetent they are. Second of all, looks. Are the actors handsome/pretty? Yes. But do they fit the role they're acting to? No. Lee Giyoung is literally not that young. If you disagree with me, at least read the manhwa and compare it if he's supposed to be that young. Aside from Gilyoung is Lee Jihye. I know that some KPOP fans might get offender but I don't really care because it's not your favorite story that's getting adapted to such incompetency. Her looks is literally mature for Jihye. In the beginning of the story, we know that Jihye was still a student. Do you think it fits? Hell no.

2) Justice To The Story When you're doing an adaptation, note that you're adapting the entirety. Did they managed to do it? Very not so. First of all are the guns, the story literally mentioned that firearms don't work on the monsters. "What if it's a weapon made using magical abilities?" Bullshit. Did the manhwa or even the novel mentioned that there's a magical gun at the beginning? No. If the director can't even follow the plotline of the story, what can we even expect from them? It's literally messy if you can't follow the plot. Here are the keys point that make it Not ORV:

• Bully, since when did Kim Dokja became a bully? In fact, he's the one being bullied. His past is literally him losing hope in life because he's being bullied and shame all throughout the school year for being the son of a murderer. In fact, it got to the point wherein he jumped. It's honestly so sad that him, who experienced all the bad things, would become the bad thing himself. Can the director even see if that's the same story they're following? Because if you ask any ORV fans, it's literally far from it. • Mother, what the hell do you mean by taking care of his mother? The reason he was bullied was because of it. It may be heavy plot for some but does this mean we should replace it to a completely new one? Hell no. The reason why Kim Dokja is like that because that's what made him like this. A quiet reader who's only hope to live was reading his novel in peace. Of all the atrocious things he experienced, it will be forgotten because of the movie portraying him as someone who love his Mother. Change his past and you'll change him completely. • Sexual Assault, when Kim Dokja first encounter Jung Heewon is when she was getting assaulted. Again, it's another heavy plot but that doesn't mean they should change it. Jung Heewon is the embodiment of justice, what justice is there when even her own character doesn't experience it? • Powers, the characters using a gun is already explained. Aside from that is Yoo Sangah building bridge and healing. Never Ever has Yoo Sangah heals people. What? Do you think she heals someone by whipping them? What the f*ck? Are they alright in the head?

Finale, while I can think more reasons to hate the live action, I hope that there are more entertainment industry who can give sufficient Justice for the story. Hate the movie and the director, not the actors. For those who wants to open a debate with me, please make sure that you've at least read the manhwa or novel. Christine Jul 24 2025 4:47 am Extremely disappointing. The fact that Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint (ORV) was granted a live-action adaptation speaks volumes about the immense support and anticipation from fans—only for it to be completely ruined by the director's choices.

It's heartbreaking, especially considering how hard the cast clearly worked. Their acting talent was genuine and promising, but sadly wasted on a directionless script and poor creative decisions. If the production team had taken even a little time to listen to fan feedback, this could have been a massive success.

Unfortunately, this film seems made for people unfamiliar with the source material. It lacks the soul, depth, and nuance that made ORV so beloved. As a fan, I sincerely hope any potential sequel drops the ORV name from its title. This adaptation feels like an insult to both the original creator and the loyal fanbase.

When the live action first was announced, I was so happy but the moment I saw the cast I lost the spark in my eyes it was Disaster worse than my life tbh. I hoped atleast the plot would stay same but they changed everything. It just keep getting worse and worse. It’s completely different movie not our ORV. Please don’t waste your time watching it. Read the novel and manhwa. I genuinely hope this movie flops and disappears into the thin air. If you watch this movie this will be the worst experience ever in your life. Kdjahhcracker Jul 23 2025 10:52 pm this isn’t omniscient reader’s viewpoint. this is a cash grab with famous faces slapped on top of a rewritten mess. they clearly cast popular actors to distract from the fact that they didn’t care about the story at all.kim dokja’s character was ruined. they made him suddenly love his mom when in the original he resented her deeply, and that pain shaped his entire personality. yoo joonghyuk was sidelined like some npc when he’s literally the protagonist of the novel inside the novel. he’s not a sidekick, he’s the guy.they made kim dokja hate twsa when it’s the only thing that kept him alive for over 10 years. like hello? it wasn’t just a book to him, it was his entire reason for existing. and yoo sangah? randomly a healer now? never had those powers. they just threw things around to make it flashy.don’t even get me started on jung heewon. she doesn’t even exist in twsa. she’s a character dokja meets later, not someone he “adores” from the novel. stop faking character relationships just for fanservice.and then the most ridiculous part they gave lee jihye a gun, she’s yoo joonghyuk’s student he trained her with a sword after mastering it for years, her sponsor is yi sun sin a historical figure who literally died by gunfire and they gave her a gun what are they thinking? it doesn’t make sense and it spits in the face of orv’s worldbuilding.orv leans historical, mythical, and symbolic. swords. blades. divinity. not cheap shootouts. they clearly didn’t read the story or understand it.if you love the novel or manhwa, skip this. if you’re new to orv, read the source instead. this adaptation is a soulless shell with a pretty face. nothing more.

The directors and producers do not care for the story and are using the names of the novel and actors as a cash grab.

If you do end up watching this garbage just know that also the main character K8m Dokja would also be hating on this movie.

I wouldnt mind him playing both dokja and joong hyeok, that would be a feast to see him portray an array of personalities. Ahn Hyo-Seop as Kim Dokja - Good choice visual wise but he will need to understand Kim Dokja’s complexity as he is not the typical selfless protagonist. Ahn Hyo-Seok will need to emulate the ruthlessness in Kim Dokja which will be interesting if he nails it.

Chae Soobin as Yoo Sangah - Personally, I think it’s great casting, if you have watched her in When the phone rings, she is capable of handling various emotions well and how a character evolves with the story. Like how Yoo Sangah went from powerless seeing people she cares about dies to a powerhouse and isn’t afraid of massacres to justify her ideals in the later part of the webtoon.

Lee Minho as Yoo Joong Hyeok - Might be a bit of mismatch. Lee Minho is a great actor but he doesn’t have the anti-hero feel to it. Like Kim Dokja, Yoo Joong Hyeok is a complex character, akin to a tortured hero who wants to do good but loses his heart as he regresses. My pick is Ju Jihoon, who has the villain charisma yet stands out as the main protagonist, if you have watched his dramas of movies, you know what I’m talking about.

Shin Seung Ho as Lee Hyunsung - Physical wise, it’s a good casting and looking forward to see how he portrays Lee Hyunsung. I love his portrayal as the arrogant crown prince in Alchemy of souls, like Lee Hyunsung, a character that is impossible to hate.

Nana as Jung Heewon - Another great casting, I believe Nana will portray Jung Heewon well, being the feisty and the righteous character who protects the weak. Similar to her past role in as a righteous yet cool unnie character in “Kill It”, she is without doubt the best actress to ORV’s “Judge of Evil”.

tomato Feb 27 2025 1:37 am as an avid fan of Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (the novel and the webtoon) : nooo... this trailer doesn't capture the complexity of ORV.. i mean, the trailer is pretty short but i can't tell how they're going to develop the vast story and complex nuances into the movie... and most the characters are kind of miscasted.. well except maybe nana, i can see in the trailer she nailed the look of jung huiwon, who is (maybe slight spoiler) broken but strong. ahn hyoseob is maybe not the image i had for kim dokja, who would be skinny and frail at first canonically, lee minho looks a bit old for yoo joonghyuk but his physical is good and in the trailer his gaze was good too, chae soobin her face is maybe too cute for yoo sangah? yoo sangah would be more elegant but determined at the same time, like a high achiever. shin seungho as lee hyunseung and jisoo as lee jihye seem ok for now (but why was jihye(jisoo) using a gun not a sword??! i'm a bit worried), will have to see more to comment on them. well this is just my opinion as an avid fan of ORV so far, based on the first trailer

i'm korean and english isn't my first language, sorry if it was hard to understand but i just love ORV so much, i really hope the movie does it justice

And as an avid fan, I agree with others saying that Lee Min Ho as Juhyeok is a bit off. I dunno, he doesn't really give the vibe. The role might be suited for an actor who has fiercer or villain but charismatic aura. Jisoo for Jihye? I'm quite skeptical actually. But we'll see. Whoever produces this LA has their reputation at stake.

Laura Aug 30 2024 11:38 pm In my opinion, the casting for Joong-Hyeok's role is less than ideal. If there's still an opportunity to recast, I would personally recommend Lee Soo Hyuk for the role. His aura perfectly aligns with Joong-Hyeok's mysterious character and would complement Ahn Hyo Seop well.

I know that they are great actors but I just can't see them as Joonghyuk and Jihye. I hope they prove me wrong though. I'm looking forward to the live action!

zey Jul 20 2024 5:39 pm okay, i don't want to make a definite judgement without seeing the actors in character, because in the past we have been misled by many actors who we thought would not suit the character. the same may be true for this film and the actors.

but i think that lee minho and jisoo do not fit the characters they will portray... unfortunately, i believe that minho cannot give the charismatic and mysterious air of yoo joonghyuk, and jisoo is too big for the role of a young high school student.

except for jisoo and minho, i believe the rest, especially nana and shin seungho, are an excellent casting choice. at first i had doubts about ahn hyeseop because he doesn't have a young face as kim dokja. but now i believe that he will do a good job, maybe he will be a better dokja than we expect.

anyway, the plot of the novel is too long. i have no idea how they plan to fit it into a film, i hope they make a long series instead of wasting the plot in one film. even though i'm waiting for the upcoming anime with more intense excitement, i'm also excited for the film. i hope they won't disappoint us.

Other characters look good. I think cha eunho would be a better JongHyuk, purely because he fits most of the description, but it would be cool for them to hire someone who does well with cold guy acting. Ah… this is one f my fav stories, I already worry about the writers changing the whole thing

They’ve done justice to many manhwa turned live adaptations (Sweet Home, A Shop for Killers). Let’s see how it goes, I’m looking forward to it.
