Set in 1945, in Gyeongseong (old name for Seoul), South Korea.

Jang Tae-Sang (Park Seo-Jun) is a wealthy man. He is know as the most attractive man around Bukchon in Gyeongseong. He is also a reliable source for information around the area. His talents, including ability to react quickly to situations, having a keen insight, and sociability, have led him to his current position. He gets soon gets involved with Yoon Chae-Ok (Han So-Hee), which leads him to reevaluate his priorities as a person.

Yoon Chae-Ok is famous as a todugun (person who finds missing people). As a young child, she traveled between Manchuria and Shanghai, China with her father. Her life was not easy and she learned at that time how to survive. She developed skills with shooting guns, using knives and handling machines. Her mother went missing 10 years ago. To find her mother, Yoon Chae-Ok arrives in Gyeongseong. There, she becomes involved with Jang Tae-Sang. They follow a series of mysterious missing person cases and they come upon a terrible reality.

So how the hell did chae ok and the creature end up in the water? Who carried her there? The creature? So y'all are trying to say that master Jang abandoned his lovers corpse? Like tf. He abandoned her for the creature and just left and concluded she's dead? No funeral no nothing, just left her body on the road and went on with his life? What kinda movie is this? Ain't no way I'm watching S2.

Very timely issues that this drama addresses brilliantly. I don't usually watch media with monsters, especially the ghastly ones like the Creature, but the historical context and the premise behind its creation gripped me from the beginning. Job well done by all the components of this drama. Bravo!

However, in Season 2, there is still no further explanation about the relationship between Lady Maeda and Chae-Ok's mother in the past. Why Maeda turned Chae-Ok's mother into a monster in Ss1??

BrainStorm Oct 22 2024 4:01 pm I had a struggle going from season one to season two because the time/world's were so different. Then the story mentioned that 89 years had past... The seasons were so different, but OK, I did get into it and really liked the series.

Han So-Hee is hot. :) Why did she lose her najin though? Disappointed that happened.

There must be a season three as there is so much undone. I liked both seasons.

SPOILER…. only thing that irks me is Yoon Jung Won’s sacrifice was for nothing. Though the hospital took a big hit thanks to his efforts, his ultimate goal which was to be with his wife was unsuccessful. That scene was so beautiful for me. The lines were great as the cinematography was excellent. But when the creature got out, that was frustrating.

And those masks the Japanese soldiers were wearing would do nothing to protect them - they would individual tanks of oxygen to breathe like scuba divers. Otherwise pure nitrogen would just suffocate them. Yeah it's a fantasy and a fun if disturbing watch (I got the reference to Unit 731 right away) but some things a just plain silly.

"Officially", a "water treatment unit". In reality, a biological experiments unit in human beings. General Ishii Shiro was also the leader who coordinated a network of 26 units equal to "731" throughout Asia. When the war ended, in exchange for his freedom he offered the results of his scientific research to the USA. Afterwards He became an advisor to US scientific researchers and a highly respected professor at the University of Tokyo in Japan. He received tributes until his death and still receives tributes after his death.

Magiere Feb 16 2024 3:13 am The creature element is not that far fetched in that the Japanese did experiment on innocent people, it was known as unit 731. After the war the allies inherited all the research and it wouldn’t surprise me that its still going on today in secret, a lot of people go missing each year worldwide. Biological warfare is a big part of military funding today, funny how the creature in tube looks a lot like the experiments they do with parasites nowadays and very similar to whats being found on people that had a certain experimental procedure.

I love classic films and this series being set during the horrors of world war II did a very good job of bringing us back to that era. But it did not need the monster it was ridiculous the storyline itself was strong enough in fact it took the edge off of the horror that the Japanese perpetrated on the Koreans as well as other nationalities and groups. That's where the horror really was they're absolute disregard for humanity when it comes down to it was pure greed as it always is, either greed for power or for material gain.. please, let me state that the horrors of war perpetrated on others by any country is inhumane and heinous

Kdrama fan Jan 16 2024 7:53 pm I watched this drama because of the main leads but I just don't get it why FL had to hire ML to find her own mother when she herself was a sleuth ! Doesn't make sense to me at all if both she and her father brag about being able to find long, lost ppl even to their bones, why can't she find her own mother after 10 years!!!

I don't like violent or gory scenes, so it took me a long time to move past episode 2 and I still haven't gotten to episode 3 because I simply abhor scary scenes of monsters jumping out of the screen at me ! However, I must admit that I like watching dramas with such bygone background of the Japanese invasion into Korea but this is the first drama that had such human medical experiments, so I guess I'm giving this drama a miss even though I love both main leads who are my new fav onscreen couple now ! The fighting scenes were very good I must admit but too bad, those gory scenes are more than what my stomach could hold up to ... :-(

I must admit that the chemistry between the main leads is so sexy indeed and I hope that they will pair off again in another drama soon ! Hopefully in another such background drama minus monsters and creatures hahaaaa !

Not bad, interesting but was disappointed in Ep 6 where Han So Hee got the head honcho under her gun, when he spoke abt how her mom was guven drugs to change plus unable to change her back, to top it off, he was gonna use her as a weapon. Why didn't she shoot him dead? I would hv coz he outlive his uses n such a bad guy. Prefer a better script than this !!!

I am looking forward to season 2. Actually this kind of drama deserve more ratings than mere romcom dramas. I enjoyed this series very much, especially its depiction of colonialism with its wealth extraction & dehumanization of the colonized people. The series suggests that the dehumanization of the populace is designed to create non-human subjects.

Ultimately, the Japanese could not destroy human bonds and love between people.

Positive - their acting was comfortable to watch - directing is pretty good (alot of money invested in set) - almost no plotholes (almost all sideplots get resolved, some aren't. I think they'll be resolved in season 2)

Negative - romance was rushed - cgi kinda sucked - besides the leads, their Japanese sucked

Questions - how did seishin survive the attack?? - how did seishin and sohee end up in the water?

That's why Lady Maeda sent Seshin to hospital/jail and there without knowing Seshin is important Kato made Seshin as an object.

My husband ended up watching the last 3 episodes with me and he said it was a good drama. Maybe next season will be about the creatures in the modern world. Almost like sweet home? Lol

hanna Jan 06 2024 3:36 am I like the fact that han so hee did kore of the sleuth work compared to her father, considering their age so it is understandable that the father is no longer fit to do some of the stunt while the daughter is trained enough to go for it. Park seo joon slayed his character well but their love story is not enough.

I just wonder about the father-daughter team of sleuths. The daughter (Han So Hee) seems to be doing more of the harder work than the father!!

It seems people are in knots about Japanese brutality that's portrayed here but it was absolutely true that they were carrying out medical experiments all over Asia and never publically apoligized for doing so.

This is the first time his name gets mentioned, and I am sure we didnt see him at all, maybe he is someone even above her, or it is not important at all

They want to film a show with creatures so they cleverly lumped the idea with the Japanese experiments, running the risk of boycott from the Japanese audience. Nonetheless, there were a few hiccups such as overpraising of Park Seo Jun’s role like the sleuth father spent few minutes praising PSJ in the warehouse and trying to lengthen the show or lead audience to Part 2 by letting PSJ to stay behind to so-called buy time for others when there’s ample time for him to get away with the rest. Another strange thing is there’s one scene where a Japanese soldier (uniform stolen) reporting to the evil doctor on who else’s entered the room and could have drink the infected water. I could have heard wrongly. He is saying in Korean 세명 rather than in Japanese さんにん which is quite strange.

Suzanne Dec 28 2023 9:54 pm I Love Korean Dramas, My husband & I started watching K-dramas in 2020. We were quickly spoiled & can’t watch anything else. We ran out of something to watch a couple of weeks ago. We watched an American movie with an actress, who was said to be the highest paid actress in the US. It was so unbelievably bad. We’re Americans & we Love Korean Dramas. PSJ is so enjoyable, his humor is top notch. We loved him in Itaewon Class. So Hee is a fine actress too. We will watch a few Hollywood productions like Mission Impossible, but for writing, acting, directing, costumes, set design, casting, music & everything else, nothing beats good Korean dramas & movies. I finally told my best friend that if she doesn’t watch Crash Landing on You, I don’t think I can be friends with her anymore. Haha! Now they’re hooked too, maybe not as much as we are though.

But some scenes irritate me like in episode 7 where PSJ and HSH were shooting at the soldiers in the hallway but suddenly the soldiers stop shooting just so PSJ and HSH can have some dramatic moment. It was very unrealistic! Did the soldiers just stand there and wait with their guns until those two stop talking? TT

But when it comes to Asian countries, Kdramas are the absolute trend, to the fact that some people never watch their own nation’s shows (hello Philippines) and are already controlled by the Korean wave. If you said that it’s the Japanese entertainment that is not popular, then I will agree with u. But Koreans? Think about it. We have different perspectives if the show is good or not. If u enjoyed it, good for u. But if others don’t, they have the right to express what they feel was wrong. Fact, not all Korean series are good. Get used to it.

I agree that different people have different taste, but what is this person talking here? Korean dramas have been a thing in many countries for a long time, starting about 20 years ago. Just because one just discovered it doesn’t mean it’s new. In fact, many have complained that the production has gone downhill for many years. People around me, who used to watch Korean dramas daily, have mostly stopped watching. I think part of the problem started when there was mass poaching of screenwriters and directors back in 2012. Since then, many scripts have become either not engaging or will go downhill after a few episodes because they were written by more inexperienced writer or team of writers.

Another reason why the production is suffering now is budget constraints. Money is tighter now and most dramas are going the factory way. You have many kpop idols landing lead roles from their first acting gig - because majority of them don’t mind taking peanuts for want of exposure and a way into alternative livelihood. And of course you have many inexperienced actors taking on lead roles very early on in their career. That of course reduces the quality of the production.

Korean dramas’ hay day is over, not just started. If you have just discovered it, you may want to look back a few years for something that is better produced.

In this case, it’s no longer a question of oranges and apples, aka a matter of taste but is about the quality of production. Of course, if this drama is good enough for you it’s good enough for you.

Briyani Dec 26 2023 3:20 am @Bea, there was no nitrogen leak in the prison hallway as far as i recall. the creature had a self-defense mechanism where she releases spores when sleeping and the other prisoners all were curious what it was only to end up dying. one of the Japanese commander did say that it was amazing that the creature had such amazing defense mechanism.

Briyani Dec 26 2023 3:17 am @Roqusa, because there is no backstory of their capabilities in finding missing/dead persons. just recognition that they're the best at what they do. also, it was not mentioned whether they went with the "person of the town" each time they were in search of missing/dead persons so it is justified that she upon hearing that PSJ was the go-to person she sniffed him out only to get entangled in the whole plot.

KW Dec 26 2023 12:16 am I can understand some of the complaints about the cast not including any Japanese actors and also that it's probably impossible with the budget they had to work with. Furthermore, I doubt they'd get actual Japanese actors to portray such roles, as we know how nationalistic the country is. What I do wish is that they had maybe hired a good Japanese instructor or tutor to help the cast practice their Japanese. Most of the main cast (Kato, Ichiro, Sachimoto were most convincing to me) were fairly decent, but some were very obviously speaking with a Korean accent. As an Asian who is not a native Korean or Japanese speaker but has studied both languages, the most obvious is when they pronounce つ. I understand that it doesn't exist in the Korean alphabet, but I've seen many Korean celebrities pronounce it as 쯔 which may be the closest they can get and somewhat similar to the untrained ear, but a big giveaway to somebody who is familiar with these languages. Other than the language issues, I didn't find any major issues with the acting. I also don't expect any romance because of the genre of the series, so no complaints there. Overall, it was a decent, quick watch that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Why Suho’s song even though it’s a historical drama? It’s a sci-fi/fantasy/thriller! If they said that about an accurate historical drama, I’d understand it, but this drama is a work of fiction. The only thing I agree with the majority is that I also wish the main Japanese characters were played by Japanese actors. Overall it’s not such a bad drama. People forget that Korean dramas don’t have the popularity and support of dramas from other countries. They are still finding their way to major streaming services and to achieve that they also have to keep up with the modern trends. We’ve seen some amazing and superb acting from the cast of this drama. Instead of nagging use constructive criticism. I am not the biggest fan of Han Soo Hee, but she is a great actress. She is this bada** girl who shakes in the face of fear but doesn’t back away. She is strong but fragile at the same time and she portrayed it beautifully. Different people have different tastes. If you don’t like a drama it’s not necessarily bad. I personally hate melodramas and avoid watching them. Some people like apples and some people like oranges. Just because I love apples doesn’t mean oranges are bad. Eat what you like and stop judging others for what they eat.

mimi Dec 25 2023 12:17 pm i do not understand all the hate comments. i really loved the acting of all the main characters. everything is perfect to me. although the Seishin creature CGI can be improved, its acceptable and i dont hate it that much. the camera work is amazing. a literal work of art. the only thing i hated is that some of the japanese characters didnt speak good japanese lol. like Lady Maeda. visually she can pass as a japanese, but the way she talked is just weird for a "japanese" and then i looked up the cast, and boom i knew it, she a south korean actress. but the MC sleuth Han So Hee, Sachimoto Ryu, Colonel Kato spoke really well japanese i loved it. Haneda just sounds too much but maybe its his character lmao he did well playing haneda cause it pissed me off PSJ is amazing as usual visually and with his acting ?? his Japanese is good enough but doesn't need to be amazing anyway cause he's playing as someone from Joseon.

So Hee is pretty but PSJ is not that good looking (sorry to his fans). There is something off. I think it’s the setting and the genre… and his haircut doesn’t suit him. He looked good in Fight for my Way and Midnight Runners. His hairstyle there suits him better. I think it’s better for him to have action roles rather than romance.

The story line to the soundtrack by SUHO was really good, I can't wait for the 2nd part and it takes getting used to kdrama being in two parts these days with one month difference to it's release. I was really hoping neither Park or So- hee were effected in the end of part 1 now the Whole town is going to get abtatse of what the hospital did.

Sunny Dec 24 2023 4:21 am on reading synopsis, Mr.sunshine was on my mind. But , i was dissapointed to some extent as there was no electrifying chemistry between han so hee and park seo joon. Male lead character arc was explored better than female lead and female lead dialogues in first few episodes didn't suit many scenes .Wi ha jun should have more screen time.if there were more no of episodes like 10 , i guess viewers will invest more on all characters, in 7 episodes i felt like there was very less scope of exploring different story lines. han so hee's action scenes were good and in few scenes unncessary humor was placed in. Among all the close up scenes between FL and ML , I felt their last hand catching scenes was more impactful. SUHO's ost is soo good(At credits)

A few minutes in to each episode, a title page is shown, Presenting the name of the show, as well as, what I presume to be the title of the episode. netflix has, for whatever reason, decided not to use your titles. It wasn’t until episode 3 that I noticed “Between obsession and perseverance”. Even the titles have a profound sense of meaning - so I’m confused on why netflix has titled it “signal” (A meaninglessly hollow replacement)… Again, I love the show. And I don’t think netflix shouldn’t have made that alteration.

Everything shown in at least the first episode itself is what Japanese army did in WW2 towards the Korean (even Chinese and South East Asians). The first scene shown in the lab is based on Unit 731, colonel Kato is even Ishii Shiro's look a like. And most Japanese didnt know and didn't get taught about the cruelty and war crimes of Imperial Japanese in WW2.

Imagine them giving scripts where Japanese actors to be casted as Japanese imperial army. The first scene of the drama itself made me sure this wont get aired in Japan.

I have to keep skipping their bantering part because it is so damn boring, lame and doesn't suit the whole series.

If the director wants to make it into romance series, no need to add the cliche scene where the ML and FL hate each other and fall in love afterwards. That just kills the mood for this series.

Winnie Dec 22 2023 7:10 pm My comment got cut off but anyways, what I'm saying is that it's absurd that the male lead who only cares about survival suddenly cares about a girl he met literally yesterday. Romance is definitely a pivotal subplot in this drama, so I would have really appreciated some depth and nuance. I hope the next few episodes change that otherwise it's going to be a big dud because the opportunity to create a dynamic ill-fated romance between two vastly different people is huge for Taesang and Chae Ok.

Now that the criticism is over, I'd like to highlight a part I really loved from episode 1: the scene where taesang and Chae ok fight and they both threaten each other with a gun and a knife respectively was perfectly shot. And the fact that none of them lowered their weapon on the count of 3 was hilarious. Great scene. Want more of this and less of insta love!

Winnie Dec 22 2023 7:03 pm I have watched until episode 2 for now and I can agree with others about the Han Sohee's character being very abrupt and irrational. Maybe there is a backstory for her attitude, if so it should be unveiled in the next episode otherwise it's going to be hard to put up with her character.

Park Seo Jun's character is the star of the show for me. He is charismatic and steals the scene whenever he appears. Can't say the same for Chae Ok so far. Park Seo Jun's really has the star quality, everyone else pales in comparison to him. I'm definitely going to continue watching for hin and while hoping for a change in Chae Ok!

Another thing that popped in my mind while writing this is the sort of insta love plotline. The main leads have only met twice so far, don't tell me the male lead is already in love with the girl. That's

For e.g.Ep 4 Mr Jang was fighting with an ordinary Japanese soldier while injured. Suddenly, Chae-ok couldn't fight off 1 soldier and she got thrown towards the wall & was so 'badly injured' that she couldn't move? I thought she was such a good fighter facing off with Mr Jang in the back alley. Chae-ok's father was so concerned with Chae-ok that he left Mr Jang to fight off the Japanese soldier with a gun. I thought it will make more sense trying to get rid of the common enemy together 1st as it reduces the casualty rate especially an enemy with a gun. This is a duller version of 'Sweet Home' for me.
