"War of Flowers" depicts a cruel hidden story within the royal court.

Royal concubine Soyong Jo (Kim Hyun-Joo) wants to make her son the king. In order to accomplish her goal, she holds the hand of Kim Ja-Jeom and uses King Injo. She also attempts to get rid of Crown Prince Sohyun.

Park Min Dec 09 2023 7:43 am It's a villainess drama which we don't get to see a lot of. Knowing Kdrama, they generally give the same immature treatment for 99% of all villains ever. Even when we have a villain lead like this drama, they don't break the rule to have a better portrayal of a good villain character. Instead we get a silly dumbed down version of a baddie. You may as well add squeaky sound effects and air it on Sunday morning cartoons. To boil it down, you'll be watching 50-episodes of this king and concubine being clowns until they reach their demise because the drama ran out of episodes. I was hoping for a smart cunning play but we got a reckless uncalculated short-sighted arrogant one. Also, the drama had this habit of re-using the same evil tricks over and over instead of coming with something creative. Setting up the same traps is a case in point. On the bright side, Kim Hyun Joo was keeping the drama afloat.

Trish Dec 06 2021 5:03 am God I loved to hate the main antagonist she did a fantastic job! Dragged a bit in places but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I usually know the history before I start watching these so I know how they are basically gong to end up anyway but the story is a great ride and great to see from different perspectives. :D Sometimes the dates were a bit out of place and confused me a little. Enjoy!

The main character will become good to the villain because of the caste society. She will be the worst villain you have met. Since this drama focuses on the villain perceptive, this something different from other Korean drama that focuses more on the good side. I have seen other dramas that focus on the villain but the villain character is weak. People who no yet watch the drama. first, ask your self if you have a soft and kind heart if you have do not watch it because you will hate the main character sooooooooo much until you wanted to kill her. People who have a strong heart just watch the fucking drama. The actress did a very excellent job. This drama can either be hit or jackpot depending on people. For me, this was a jackpot drama that I found. The drama will fun when episode 5 started. I feel the first 4 episode is slow. This drama is one of the best drama Ratings: 10/10 by Mr.Critic

Entel Mar 04 2016 5:27 pm Kay, i guess she killed a few innocent ppl. She just did what she had to do to get back at the already unfair world she grew up in. You can really feel her immense frustration at how unfair her world was. Especially when she wasn't allowed to marry who she wanted. The korean caste system made it damn hard for a truly fair society. While everyone seemed to blindly accept the social norms, she refused to be considered what ppl labeled her as, a mistress' daughter out of wedlock or something i'm not sure but i just know she hated being labeled as unworthy. So she sacrificed the love of her life and married an old man for a shot at the top. To prove to herself a complex point. Somewhat lost her way, ambitious and brave in her own way.

Liz Mar 04 2016 5:15 pm The main character was so bad ass. I didn't really know who she was until this drama, whenever my mom was watching it. Her character development was so damn phenomenal. This character really made me appreciate villain characters so much more. It was refreshing to watch such a refreshing and intricate character evolve throughout the series. Her past really helps the viewer relate to her on a personal level. I ended up loving her even more as she became so blatantly bad lol. Oh god the ending though... So good, My heart ached. Overall had my adrenaline pumping every episode, good plot, she was b|tchy but the others were a$$holes and had it coming anyway. So damn talented! Her acting commanded the whole series. Shallow viewers who watch for looks might leave weird reviews but really they're missing out if thats why they couldn't focus on the story and characters.

I get a lot of people hate the main character but it is one of the few historical palace dramas out there that you get to see in the point of view of the villian. I for one, have been tired of the overused overly righteous, perfect main females. Or the kind, naive, perfect girl enters the palace and goes bad. I really liked the main character. I think this drama is really good. It's interesting. You should give it a go.

mali Apr 01 2015 10:52 am So as I read the reviews...before watching this, most was that it was awful, and depressing. I was hesitant, but I realized now that is really isnt that awful, although I even skipped some episodes in the middle. It's because they made her so evil but she kept getting away with everything that I couldnt stand her I skipped the middle parts...just so i can see her justice served. They overdid it with her evil-ness without balancing it. You ended up just hating her too much that it was enough. I think another reason why people just hated this is because it was so dreary and somber and even those dramas that are dreary have some comedy, but the comedy that this had was very crude and and unappealing to most it was just a totally depressing tone, but as all korean dramas it has its engaging story, that keeps you there.

In fact almost every one in this movie needs to DIE most especially JO GUI IN. This is a mess. Please dnt watch to avoid anger and high blood pressure

Gasenadi Jan 19 2014 7:52 pm SUPERB drama! Until now I've never seen character "development" veer into corruption, deception, betrayal in most of the principal characters. I began this adventure sympathizing with the main characters and their motives. But as it progressed I, like a previous viewer, have remained GLUED to find out if and how each receives their comeuppance. Excellent story, acting, music, directing. And Song Seon-Mi, my beloved Nurse from Golden Time, is absolutely magnificent. The Princess with ovaries of STEEL. I'm so glad I've watched Cruel Palace.

I mean, this drama is so indelicate and obvious, like "here's the plotting subjects" "here's the shouting king who gets red in the face whenever his power is insulted" and, last but the worst, the girl Yamjeon, who is the perfectly wicked concubine and the main actress in the same time, which is infuriating. JTBC has really been awful. I sure hope they stop ruining the Hallyu with these silly dramas.

Julie Sep 06 2013 12:31 pm This drama is absolutely excellent! It's a very interesting take on King Injo and his reign. If you enjoyed all the mystery surrounding him and his sons, then definitely check out other dramas that focus on that (like The Mighty Chil-woo or Chuno). They did a great job casting Kim Hyun-Joo as Yam Jun and Lee Deok-Hwa as the King. Though I do feel pity for her character, at the same I can't justify her actions and in a way, I am pretty excited to see what's going to happen to her and Kim Ja Jeom (even though they already said what happens to him, but I'm interested to see what happens that leads up to it). I will say that if you have no prior knowledge of King Injo's reign, then some of the little information they put in via the (random) narrator will be pretty spoiler-y. But otherwise, great show! I can't wait for the last two episodes!

She’s a good girl turned bad because of a broken heart from a jerk boyfriend who was a total mama’s boy and almost got her and their kid killed as well as the abuse she constantly undergoes by everyone else around her. All of those other people are selfish, narrow minded jerks and she should get rid of them all. You go girl, stay strong.

Cheryl Aug 20 2013 11:24 am Jo Gui-In is simply evil and I can't wait until she gets what's coming to her by way of karma. I watch this drama because it's like a train wreck: You simply have to watch to see how it ends. The direction is terrible, the acting is way over the top, and the constant out of place laughter is annoying. Still, I watch because the story is a good one and the scenes and costumes are beautiful. Wish the direction would simply stick to the historical facts though. Surely the King wasn't this incredibly dumb and easily manipulated.

omiomi Aug 19 2013 2:10 pm Never have I had so much contempt for a character. Soyong jo is a psychopath. The role was beautifully performed but evil winning all the time got pretty old by episode 42. Haven't seen the rest of the series but I hope Soyong jo gets what is coming to her. Burn her at the stake ....She is a witch!

Jae May 22 2013 1:04 am I really hope there is a happy ending for Royal Concubine Soyong Jo. Everyone around her keeps disappointing and abandoning her. Most people probably think she’s a bad person but she’s doing bad things out of survival. You go Royal Concubine Soyong Jo, kill them all! XD

Summary so far: Girl meets boy but he betrays her. King meets girl and makes fake promises. Girl gets angry and gets power crazed because she wants to avenger her broken heart.
