Han Ji-Yul (Choo Yeong-Woo) works as a veterinarian in Seoul. One day, he receives a phone call from his grandfather. His grandfather doesn’t mention specifics, but his voice sounds serious. Han Ji-Yul decides to go to Huidong Village, where his grandfather lives and runs an animal clinic. There, Han Ji-Yul meets Police Officer Ahn Ja-Young (Joy). It turns out his grandfather is actually touring Europe. According to the note left by his grandfather, Han Ji-Yul has to take over his grandfather’s animal clinic for a half year, while his grandfather is away.

Even when Ahn Ja-Young was preparing for her test to become a police officer, she wanted to work as a police officer in Huidong Village, where she grew up. She is usually the first one to appear and provide help to residents in need. She helps Han Ji-Yul solve inconveniences related to his daily life in the village and they develop a romantic relationship.

Kdrama Llama Apr 26 2026 12:50 am A simple, straightforward romcom that does what it says on the tin and has lots of classic tropes - childhood connection, enemies to lovers… I enjoyed watching the lead couple get together and the small town setting, no surprises but a nice easy watch. The soundtrack is lovely too.

Bunnypants Jul 31 2025 5:04 pm This show crams in all the kdrama rom-com tropes…some more annoying than others. The interlopers between the ML & FL were both nasty irritations. The SML was an absolute jerk, and the surprise ex girlfriend was a sneaky manipulative jerk. I did enjoy most of this though, tropes or not. Was a good cotton candy kind of show…with cute animals ?

-- the dynamic of both actors looked awkward and forced especially watching this after choo young woo's succesful projects: Tale of Lady Ok and Trauma Code. He was just starting his career so its a given that his weaknesses are obvious here but his potential is also noticeable that i could say he really did improved Alot. Joy is also improving as the story progresses, maybe her character in early eps were just badly written and also its my first time seeing her in a drama.

As i continue watching this, its slowly making me feel like home.

This is perfect for those who wants to watch just a chill and vibey drama especially away from the chaotic and nonchalant people in the metro or city. The province setting of this drama is refreshing and i think i just got myself recharged from the headache and stress i got from thriller dramas hahaha

My thoughts after watching the series: May this kind of love find me....

This mini series is overall decent. First few episodes were a bit bland and some of the scenes are over the top and unnecessary amd cliche. I think the build up of romance was a bit off but it gets better towards the end. The storyline was pretty simple and light. No plot twist, no mystery, no heartbreaking turn that viewers would probably anticipate to prepare themselves from possible hurtful scenes. But this drama, it was so refreshing and relaxing. Just a pure romcom and it only has 12 episodes with 30 mins running time so it was perfect to binge watch. The story, the cast, the chemistry and the countryside was just so perfect <33

anri Jul 19 2024 11:36 pm tbh, i was just watching this in between a heavy plot drama i was also watching because i know this was just a feel good drama. i enjoyed some of joy's previous dramas like tempted and the liar and his lover but in this one her acting felt stiff and flat and so was the male character. i also didn't feel any chemistry at all. i just finished this because its just a short drama but i really do feel like i wasted my time on this.

It's obvious the directors realized this and that's why it's 12 episodes instead of 16, and the 12th is rushed. The kids had better chemistry than the leads. There was no mystery, good drama or anything to look forward to.

The fake cozy and small-town vibes failed to capture a convincing portrayal of small-town life but rather padded it with cheap cookie cutter village NPCs with bubbly visuals. The attempts at romance felt superficial and unconvincing, the female lead was always coming off too strong on the new guy in the village despite having little to no sufficient time to develop a romance, but rather relying on her ever long lasting impression of each other when they were kids. The transition was off. The case is even worse with the male lead. Anyway, it was a forgettable and uninspiring zero calories short drama.

Rawan Feb 18 2024 6:40 am So so cute. Such a light, warm, fuzzy and cozy drama. Something to watch that doesn't require too much analytical work or brainpower. The plot itself was so light and easy to follow, and the characters were so fun to watch. I loved Sang-Hyeon as the second lead, he was charming and a really emotionally intelligent character. I loved the scene where he confessed that he would always be there for Ja-Young, despite whether she liked him romantically or not. He never compromised their friendship, even though it pained him to not have her romantically.

I think the slow burn aspect of the romance between Ja-Young and Ji-Yul was executed nicely. Joy's acting was not *the best* but i think she gets a pass due to the lightness of the drama. It was such a good drama for getting back into kdramas, and also hits the mark for being visually pleasing as well.

You could feel her bottled-up love and her conflicting thoughts and feelings. Hope she gets many more roles! The writing, directing and cinematography are all top level. My highest recommendation!!!

Yana Jun 25 2023 6:38 am When I read the plot, I hesitated to watch this drama at first. I thought this must be boring as the story has been told many times. But boy, I have never been this wrong in my entire life. Glad I took the chance to finish the drama.

What I like about the drama:

the whole drama feels like a story from a romantic comedy anime

- the storyline feels like kimi ni todoke which is favorite as well but the setting is hometown and the boy is shy while the girl is cheerful.

Smooth, calm, and romantic

- Every episode feels like you're in the clouds drinking Iced Vanilla Latte with chocolate cookies on the side. Every interaction of Joy and the male lead was being sinked in effortlessly into my brain and automatically gave me happy hormones. Seriously, no other drama has made me feel this happy, calm, and chill.

Slow pacing

- Contrary to others' preferences and also depending on the concept, I prefer slow pacing over fast pacing because it gives me enough time to feel the characters and the story. Fast pacing generally causes the scenes to feel unnatural and forced. In this case, the drama has a very good pacing and feels natural as well.

Chemistry of Joy and the male lead

- Joy had a very good chemistry with her leading man in Liar and His Lover, and they were one of my favorite pairs in Kdrama. However, when I saw her with Yeong woo, even without lines yet they had this out of this world chemistry that you probably couldnt see in other shows. Maybe it's because of the place, the show has a really good setting so it may have added up to their intense chemistry.

Jilli Jan 15 2023 6:00 pm If you're getting tired of dark themes in your recent Kdramas and want a happy, upbeat respite from them, then this sweet short drama filmed in the country, focusing on a vet and the animals he takes care of, should cheer you up and make you smile. It's wholesome and fun and refreshing. I love when the drama makers film in the country instead of just Seoul all the time. The main leads were new to me but I enjoyed them. I think they had cute chemistry together.

With such a beginning the first 10 minutes I get the crisis,this scriptwriter should be fired ..!!!

Loved the final episode. Especially the scene where Ja Young broadcasts her relationship to the entire village. Joy is a cute drunk. This was Joy’s (Red Velvet) 3rd leading role. She does a superb job in this drama also.

andie Sep 30 2022 10:02 pm I dont usually watch kdrama but this is actually quite good. The actors portrayed their roles quite well, the characters comedic awkwardness and internal irritation with each other was very well played out by the actors. It's really funny. There are scenes that was almost too natural to say that they were even acting. And also I found out that the main leads were doing alot of adlibs on both their scene and lines, that's a plus for me. The plot is too light I guess. If you want big and explosive stories this wont fit your taste. But as for a "healing" drama, I can say that they did pretty well! ?

Sweet enough but definitely a small screen day time drama without much meat, but pleasant and the animals made it. The old guy having his bull put to sleep was a master stroke, a perfect little scene. In these days of world problems, calming to watch a show without a hint of evil or disaster in it. Charming.

chewy Sep 28 2022 6:51 pm This was such a feel good, light and fluff drama. True to it's word It Is Indeed A "Healing" drama. If you want a heavy plot and lots of twist, this may not be for you. But if you're looking for something comedic and fluffy drama, this ones definitely for you. It only has a little bit of drama but all in all its still has an amazing plot line. A little bit of slow burn but the comedy and the village issue was a perfect distraction to the main leads slow burn relationship. All that tension and slowburn was so worth it in the end. I am so in love with this drama ???

Once Upon a Small Town is not going to change the world but it was a joy to watch. The story goes at a pace befitting of the small town it's set in - which looks stunning - but it's just a sweet 30-minute escape to enjoy Joy and all the cute animals that feature heavily throughout. Joy's acting is good and carries the show well. The male leads are ok too, although the second lead is annoying for most of the series in the classic second lead style. It's a nice filler drama.- I used to it to detox in between Little Women episodes. It's a must-watch if you're Reveluv!

Kate Sep 28 2022 9:39 am I prefer legal and medical dramas in general. However, I enjoyed watching this slow pace drama with the countryside as a setting. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but I like how it healed me from my anxiety. It reminds me of my hometown so much, the people around them, the cameo appearances of those several pets was a sight to behold. It was much exciting for me at the second half of the entire episodes.

Simply and ultimately it’s a lovely drama with extremely talented actors some at the beginning of what I expect a long successful career. The Director, Kwon Seok-Jang has already delivered Bossam one of my favorite dramas so his talent is evident. I am only a viewer and not a film maker but there seems to be a chosen style of film making that needs a critical look. The style is reflected by setting a slow lumbering pace of many beginning episodes to reflect the slow (perhaps uncomplicated) pace of the countryside & its folk. This style unfortunately runs the risk of losing an audience before being able to engage them. My Liberation Notes, a brilliant drama in my opinion uses that very style. It takes a strong will & perseverance for a viewer to hang on and be rewarded. Once Upon A Small Town doesn’t come out of its sleep until midway and then comes alive in a most delightful way. I now can’t wait for the next episode! The story is sweet, the actors terrific nuanced, the real deal!! Baek Sung-Chul is more than adorable. He’s a fine actor who delivers a sensitive strong nuanced performance. He’s on my watchlist. Ahn Ja Young is memorable for developing her character before our very eyes into a visually more beautiful emotionally complex human being…the magic of acting. Choo Yeong-Woo keeps his character restrained building emotional drama which is beginning to explode ( a few episodes left). Ha Yul-Ri while not only beautiful creates an irritating character you really dislike. What great acting ability! The Huidong Village ladies are a treasured casting choice. Of course led by our one & only Baek Ji-Won. Kudos to Park Ji-H too. So as you can see I’m finally loving this drama but at the same time could have missed out on so much there…ultimately. Hope this helps.

Hoping there will be more seasons to follow of Once Upon a Small Town. Loving this entertainment. Please make more series like this. Looking forward to watching the last 3 episodes. It's a slow type of kdrama so you don't need to focus on it so much and you can do your work like cleaning the house or cooking or studying. You won't missed much even if you take your eyes off the screen. Plus, the male lead is an eye candy, so I only focus on his scene. Lol.

Yes it may be a typical romance plot but they execute the plotline well and the chemistry between the characters is amazing. I'm not from SK but the countryside setting gives me familiar and nostalgic feeling, as if it's my own hometown. Also I admire choo youngwoo for choosing the role of a veteranian hahaha can't wait for the final 3 episodes!

Kate Ortouste Sep 06 2022 11:50 pm The countryside concept is similar to Hometown Cha Cha Cha, but what I like about Once Upon A Small Town is that it gives us a breather from all heavy, fantasy, and investigative dramas. I love how the cast was carefully picked and the first original soundtrack of this drama is so refreshing and healing. This drama will give us a lot of life lessons which people do need in this time of year. I hope this drama will succeed because I could see how the rookie actors with Joy did their best to put on a wonderful show. I am excited for the 3rd episode tonight <3

The casts are perfect for their roles, the fact that this is filmed in a countryside with greens everywhere is so refreshing to watch, the animals are also cute, it must been hard to film but i love that this also educates the viewers about the animals, I am all smiles while watching every scene. The love line is also good, Jayoung and Jiyul. The story is light and fun, this is gonna be my feel good/healing drama for sure. Watching this along with the heavy plot dramas that are also airing right now, so it's a perfect balance. This is also on Netflix so it's accessible for me to watch. Too bad that it's only 30mins per episode but I'll be looking forward for the next episodes!

babab Sep 06 2022 7:16 pm its truly a healing drama in the middle of dark dramas. cute and bright, but unfortunately the episode is only 30 minutes :( all the actors and actress suits their roles well, jiyul really has that cold city guy in him and jayoung totaly is village's nosiest person lol. Very recommended

I'm glad the actress from SNSD didn't take this role. I like her too, but I think the actress in the role fits the role especially age-wise. Looking forward to tomorrow's episode.

So, Joy character as a police officer is not a typical police officer, do you get what I mean? Her acting is on point and so as the others. Some may not understand it but as you can see in the beginning that Joy and Yeong-woo known each other when they are young that is why you can see Joy looking at him intensely (like saying I remember you but hmm can't you remember me?) Watching the 1st ep is so refreshing. I can't wait for the 2nd ep. A must watch Kdrama.

Soni Sep 05 2022 8:40 pm I tried but 30 minutes is too long actually…this is not for me I stopped it already after the ML got hurt by the police. Acting seemed off. I don’t know why it’s on Netflix when there are other better kdrama than this but not made it to NF. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
