Yoo Jin-Woo (Hyun-Bin) is the CEO of an investment company. He has good sense at his work, a strong adventurous spirit and a strong desire for winning. Yoo Jin-Woo is going through a hard time emotionally due to things like betrayal from his friends. He visits Granada, Spain on business and stays at an old hostel run by Jung Hee-Joo (Park Shin-Hye). There, Yoo Jin-Woo gets involved in a strange affair.

The best movie I have seen in a long time. Hyun-Bin could not played his part any better as well as Park Shin-Hye. All the actors played their role perfectly. I will recommend this movie to all my friends.

The VFX is really good and gives room for imagination, Hyun-Bin and Park Shin-Hye's chemistry is abit lacking here but given the sci-fi story, alot of time is based on actions which they both performed well.

Heroin not even bother about his own brother who missing for several days and keep checking on some new person just because she is kind. what a ****. Writer if you dont know to write a story kindly do other stuff which you are good. Total waste of time. I watched 6 ep and i am stopping from here.

Sunshine Sep 21 2022 12:25 am I am just starting to watch K-Dramas and out of the five I have watched, this is the one I like most (which compelled me to write this review). It was not just the romantic fantasy drama I thought it would be from its posters and trailers. The story is totally unexpected and the visuals are really enjoyable to watch - captivating and never too much, so that my eyes were always focused to see every detail in every scene. The dialogues are witty and the love story is not mushy. Events are built up in a very enticing way and character transformations are not forced but very clearly portrayed. I also like, how important new information for the story is presented without making me feel stupid or making me think that the characters are (as is often the case with long stories like this). I totally binge-watched this series and finished in 3 consecutive evenings without getting sleepy once. (Another one I watched earlier made me doze off a couple of times although I thought it was quite fun while I was at it, but not when it was over.) I would definitely recommend and watch this one again later. Kudos to the actors and creators!

I'm stuck at episode 13, why? I don't want to continue yet, I don't want it to end yet. But I am very curious about what will happen next so I am here, leaving my thoughts, opinions and reviews because I don't know what will be my life after the 3 episodes HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I am also watching some BEHIND THE SCENES. I am loving it, truly HYUN BIN PROVED HIMSELF AS AN ACTION KING OF SOKOR. I love the scene inside the train, when Jeong Han left behind and Hyun Bin had to fight those terrorist. That was!!! ON!!! FIRE!!! I keep replying that scene.

Park Shin Hye is so pretty, I guess the 2nd work of her that I watched, I know her ever since but never got the chance to watch her works aside from MY ANNOYING BROTHER. HYUN BIN IS SUCH A GREAT ACTOR TO BUILD SUCH A NICE AND AMAZING CHEMISTRY WITH EACH OF HER LEADING LADY. A BinJin fan here saying that I am very happy to see their romance scene. Some pips said that there is no happy ending for both Jinwoo and Heeju??? I'm gonna cry. :<< I am about to throw my pillow when Jinwoo kiss Heeju. I think, WE NEED SEASON 2 IF THAT'S THE CASE. I'll be left heartbroken.

iba Feb 27 2022 9:39 am 7.5/10 overall a fresh concept which kept me watching till the end. however the hint of romance at the last few eps is kinda not here not there. either they include the romance at the earlier few eps or go without it. the last ep was a little of a let down, jinwoo didn't appear much and it ended, plus there was too much crying scenes.

Park Shin Hye stepped outside her comfort zone and I congratulate her for taking on a difficult role and pulling it off. It certainly kept us guessing to the end, which was utterly sad.

As for the drama I dont expect romance but a bit of it is good However go yu ra scene existance is unnesessary.

And Something wrong with the ending, should consider 2nd season for more detail and explaination. Still I like thinking that jin woo survive and still sane.

When she found out that he's very rich, it was also no longer bad for her to have been treated badly. Not my cup of tea, so i skipped mostly all of the rest. By and large a one-man show of the in my opinion completely overrated leading actor and a typical story of a poor girl meets a rich man.

The death of Hyunbin's secretary (Seo Jung Hoon) was the most unexpected, saddest death I've ever seen onscreen. It was very bold of the screenwriter/director to do that.

Jil Mar 30 2021 12:29 pm This has great plots. If there will be season two, focus on action more and family rather than love hehe. And make the phasing a bit faster. But overall, because of the story, i manage to complete and end it. But took me longer than usual probably because its a bit slow. But i love the fight scenes as well as the simple effects, it was great.

Though, Hyun Bin s character in the story was hesitant to get emotionally involved with Park Shin Hye s character after 2 failed martiages, still they have good chemistry. The drama series is well done.....cinematography is excellent and modern ending wherein its up to the viewer how to end it.....will Yoo Jin Woo and Jung Hee Jo meet each other??? I think so.....shes going to the park where he is.

db Jan 23 2021 1:24 pm Contrary to the popular reception, I would say I loved this drama because the very theme - AR gaming was quite interesting and I couldn't wait to watch the next episode and romance was never intended to the main plot either. Hyun Bin portrayed the character so well and all the action scenes and gaming sequences were good. I agree it was not the ending I expected nor wanted; hope there will be season 2 which gives us what we want. !

The actors were great really love theur performance here but I felt like there were some characters that I don't think are needed in this drama but hey whats done is done. She didn't even get a proper character development throughout the series! She also got so little screen time that I can't actually see the growing romance between her and Hyunbin. They lack chemistry:(

I'm certain this could have been a hit-drama like CLOY or Start-up if only they just made the romance better.

It could have been written better. The dialogues are plain and boring. The story feels dragged out. The action scenes are repetitive, they keep fast-forwarding in the future and then going back to the past, I get its for dramatic effects, but it gets confusing and frustrating at some point. Its very slow paced and nothing much happens.Park shin hye doesnt get much screen time, she acts like a supporting character for Hyun Bin. To top that it has a disappointing ending. Feels like all the characters efforts have been for nothing.?

Yoo role untill i feel romance part no need to be there.. the jung hee joo's role as a love partner seems unnessary. I think it is more dramatic if she just admired him a lot and end up with other guys.

Also, i think the relationship between mr.yoo and his secretary is stronger and come to sadden than jung hee jun. feel empty seeing she's crying. Thus, i can't see the chemistry.

Andora Sep 10 2020 2:02 pm I think Hyuan Bin might be the best actor to every exist. Damn. This is only my second Korean production, but listening to the Korean was gorgeous. Is this because the Song Jae-Jung is so incredible, Korean just a beautiful language, or is Hyuan Bin's delivery that Siren-like? Maybe all of the above?

Memories of Alhambra is like a spring rain bringing a rose from the desert of American productions these days. I enjoyed the connection with the literary hero's journey. And Mr. Yoo becoming the modern-day Christ through his love for a woman with a heart.

You should have season two, with Hee-Joo making her own heroine journey, in a truly matriarchal way. That's who this modern-day Christ was mimicking, right? Women, with our compassion, care, and sacrifice?

I want to watch everything that Song Jae-Jung has written. Now.

(Please forgive any butchering on these names. It's my first foray into anything Korean, aside from the beautiful opening to the Olympics).

duh Aug 29 2020 6:58 pm i never leave a comment before, but why is everybody comparing hyunbin's role here with him in crash landing on you?? whats next? are you gonna compare it with hyde jekyll me as well? its a different genre for gods sake. well if you prefer full romance story, then i dont blame you. but comparing yoo jin woo and ri jung hyuk character is not right. some of you even comparing the chemistry? like.. Why??? the main point of this drama is not even on the romance part, but the romance is still there. once again, these two dramas have different story, different genre, Different. so please, dont say crash landing on you is better than memories of the alhambra. both are good and well produced. both writers worked so hard on their own project.

the fact that hyun bin can pull off both yoo jin woo and ri jung hyuk really well, why cant you appreciate that? he is a good actor and that is what more important.

This drama was good, pretty good storyline but the ending was disappointing.

Certain characters in the drama I found irrelevant there to just fill some airtime. Love Hyun Bin, great actor! I think my vote for better drama with him in it would be "Crash Landing onYou" over this drama. Better chemistry in that drama as well.

There were moments that just stucked in heart, and things were really original. But at the end, unfortunately, writer couldnt handle the plot holes. Thus why the drama failed. The thing was so interesting to watch until we got conclusion. I still teared at the end, but the explanations were weak. Just like in W, a lot of things went ridiculous at the end. But as I said, it's still amazing drama. Hyun Bin's performance is amazing. He's different in every drama I watch with him! What a stunning actor.

? Jun 24 2020 11:23 pm i don’t usually write comments but i feel lkke I needed to say this. First of all, the drama was very good in my opinion. The cast was amazing and the story was just perfect. It took a couple eps to get addicted to it but it was still fun the entire time. Now with that said, the ending. I personally don’t have a problem w it. It wasn’t as bad as what everyone in the comments is saying Spoil alert*** (not rlly tho) For the ending we find out he’s not dead and that Hee Ju goes to where he is which probably means they met. We find out that everyone is fine and has a good end to it. So I don’t think it was a bad ending.

RAZ Jun 18 2020 4:16 pm This was a great drama. I personally loved every minute of it. Obviously, someone is going to have to level up to above 100 in order to get Yoo Jin Woo out of the dungeon. Which is going to take a long time.

I know most people hate the ending, but I blame Netflix for that. It truly looks like they left it open ended on purpose in order to have a second season. Kdramas never used to have multiple seasons; but now with Netflix, they are beginning to think of 2nd seasons. The problem is that they may or may not actually film a second season, so it leaves the viewers hanging for no reason.

In a 2nd season, we could have Se-Joo level up; although he has no reason to and is already too traumatized so that is probably not the best option. Hee-Joo would be the only one that is motivated enough to do it, but she has shown no real interest in playing the game. My bet is that they introduce a new character who plays the game, levels up and gets Jin-Woo out of the dungeon as well as a whole new story arc for the new player and new characters.

Also, no one deleted the Marco bug.

Volina Jun 06 2020 12:50 am I was very surprised at the level of violence in this drama. Then there was Park Shin Hye who appeared to be hired to cry and pretend to play the guitar! The spooky eyed guy who just wouldn't stay dead but the worst part of this drama is the ending. It felt like the screenwriter quit just before he wrote the last few scenes. Another words, big build up then flat lined at the end! If there is a second series count me out. I believe in the old saying, "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me".

bright energy May 10 2020 3:31 am this series is a masterpiece. everything is well crafted and the characters portrayed are spot on. accurate but still very natural. though it is a mystery/fantast drama, the whole package is more realistic than the cliche and hyped romcom dramas that we usually associate with korean series

MOA is basically a fictional drama. It's not impossible to get a physical contact with enemy because Jinwoo is in the virtual world once he logged in. To call MOA a horrible one? Nope.

I cried really hard when Jinwoo removed Seo JungHoon?

The show is based on AR and he trys out a new AR game by using hiis holo lens or whatever (contracts) and yet hes somehow able to physically grab and feel the sword as well as get thrown around by enemies. Simply impossible and even suspension of belief is hard to make me get through it.

I've actually never seen a drama like this, it was so confusing at first because of the flashbacks but you'll get the hang of it around EP4 tho. As you can see from the Plot Synopsis, you'd literally expect this to be more on romance but it's actually not. If y'all expecting PSH & HB to have lots of romantic scene tho, I'm telling you, they don't. The story focuses more on Hyun Bin's journey to find Se Ju (PCY) and to unravel the hidden truths about the game. And it's actually a refreshing one. I just started this yesterday and I finished it just now. It was so interesting and intriguing that I didn't get to sleep at all. And I really cried a lot tho every time Seo Jung-Hoon (MJW) or Secretary Seo saves Jin Woo whenever he's in danger, that was like one of the painful moments for me tho. And also, the ending's kinda a cliff-hanger. I think this will have a Season 2. Anyways, this is a good drama. It is a recommended one.

Some people need that to be shown through typical sappy romance scenarios, but what this drama delivers is tenfold to what those drama's portray. Their love for one another is real, there's no denying that, so much so that is supersedes time. I am honestly baffled that people don't see that; it's as though they've seen so many sappy romances where the main male lead goes about their cliche nuances that their better judgement has been clouded. An angsty arrogant main male lead buying out an entire restaurant for the female lead isn't love, but Jin Woo and Hee Ju's relationship certainly is.

I know of some people that are disappointed with the drama's ending. But I'd like to think that not everything should end in rainbows and roses. In fact, I find those endings to be the most cliche and boring. This series, with all its twists and turns and, yes, even along with its deaths, is so much more than a sappy romance drama. It's probably the best I've seen in such a long while. And I don't know why people are complaining! The ending basically shows us that Jin Woo isn't dead, and that he reunited with Hee Ju! I don't know why some people need that spelled out for them! I don't know about others but what I found to be especially refreshing was the filming of the drama itself, how it would keep you watching on the edge of your seat after each episode with its cutscenes and flashbacks. I didn't find it too difficult to follow, I think to understand it you'd need to think more than you would when watching a typical sappy romance, but it's not that hard at all! So I don't see no reason for complain. The acting, coupled with the intricate plot of the drama, was superb, from everyone in the cast, especially from our leads Park Shin Hye and Hyun Bin! It had been so long since I had seen either of them in a drama, and they had exceeded my expectations far and beyond. So I would give this drama a 10/10! It's perfect in every way! I've been finding difficulty staying with a single drama and watching them until the end, I would usually give up around the 5th episode or so, but not with this drama! It had me hooked each and every episode. If you are not sure if you should watch this drama because you heard it's sad, sure, it's sad, but I've seen sadder to be honest. It's just realistic, which is honestly a breath of fresh air considering how obsessed the drama industry is with making unrealistic scenarios every chance they get. So definitely watch it! you wont regret it!

Too many repeating scene and sudden cut off scene which make the viewer very confusing whether we are watching the past or the present! Too many unnecessary characters dead characters as well. Truly disappointed with the ending and a lot of unanswered scenario. All in all this is a rubbish drama apart from Hyun Bin being as handsome as always.

Don't waste your time with this drama unless you just want to see how hot Hyunbin is. They wasted his talent in this drama. Here's everything I thought was wrong about this drama: First of all, the storyline was pretty interesting but 70% of each ep is filled with flashbacks after flashbacks which delayed most of the buildup to the plot. There were many useless characters as well. The worst thing about this drama is definitely the ending. How does the writer make me go through a rollercoaster of emotions and then ends the story in such a sh*tty way. Like cmonnn you couldn't even finish the story??!!! The ending was so trashy that I felt like I wasted all my tears and effort for nothing.

and i heard last episode is not quite what should be ended. well i have to watch one more.

actually, what brought me here was hyunbin (bcs i got addicted with him in crash landing on you & waiting for future episodes feels like hell), he’s such an amazing actor and his performance here is stellar.

SPOILER alert:

a lot of fans are begging for s2 but me, i don’t. i won’t say that i liked how it ended but there’s just no other way to wrap it up better than this. even though we didn’t see the leads being happy and being in each others arms, at least there was hope, that they could be happy after all the pain.

and i was really hoping to see shin hye fighting alongside hyun bin. it’s a shame that it didn’t happen. but all in all, a brilliant drama. hands down.

Judy Jan 01 2020 8:43 am This is a brilliantly conceived plot. Usually I don’t like fantasy but this is so close to reality that it is nearly feasible. I teach teenagers and their lives are often inside their games. Hyun Bin is an amazing actor, a bit too much plastic surgery but portrayed the role excellently and it must have been exhausting. Shin Hye was amazing the way she learnt Spanish, learnt to play the theme tune on the guitar, she is beautiful and multi talented. The ending was sad but left some hope. A truly riveting drama that really drew me in to a genre I don’t usually watch.

About the story, i can tell this one was had fresh and brilliant idea, but poorly written. Too bad they didn't give PSH involved in their action scenes, which can bring this series more interesting. Hee joo and emma actually were the most potential characters. So hope there is MOTA season 2.

I felt that there wasnt enough build up between them. Hee ju fell for him quickly and she was always crying. But even after they were together, the romance wasnt there. Last episode was boring and slightly disappointing

Writer has a good intention however maybe her storytelling aspect is not there yet... Some parts with overly long flashbacks of 20 mins or more made me confused about which time was it, the past or the present... If she would have explained the story well, this drama would have been a perfect 10 cos Hyun Bin was excellent! He acted so well and the love story part can be omitted actually cos thcos the story is already good without the love story

Even they get crazy in a way.In final episode its shown even how government rules needed to implement for that game.Well I liked both leads,their chemistry is good but their relationship is rushed & not natural .So if you are for romance its not for you.

EN Jun 22 2019 6:58 am This drama, like this writer and PD's previous work, is nothing but a series of inexplicable events packaged in great cinematography and expensive CGI, locations and sound mixing. Watch for the action and the suspense of "what inexplicable thing will happen next" because there is not much else. It's entertaining for that reason alone. That is if you like brainless action with no plot to follow or be satisfied by.

There are just too many things in this production team's dramas that simply happen. I mean, they are just happening with zero explanation or connections and you get to the final episode and there is STILL no explanation. Bad storytelling.

I've never felt satisfied after watching a drama by this writer PD team.

Nadia Jun 19 2019 6:49 pm This drama is being heavily marketed as a romance, but it's NOT a romantic drama. It's totally sci-fi/fantasy, action adventure. It's a decent drama for these two genres but since I'm not a big fan of action adventure, I wasted quite a bit of time watching this, waiting for the romance to show up and it never did.

My previous rants (reviews) on this drama were out of pure frustration because the marketing was so misleading. I'm sure I could appreciate this drama if I was into action.

Only for this Reasons: they didn't filter what can gaming addiction can do to a person & what harm gaming can do them. Also the way they show Mental illness & Depression in drama is truly Daebak! Honestly we need more drama like this.

Don't hate me for this but honestly this Drama would survive without the Romance the actors doesn't have enough chemistry. I hate they way they portrait Hee-Joo as a strong, smart & independent woman but after receiving 10-Won she instantly fall in love with Jin-Woo? That's disturbing, they didn't even have enough sweet moments while in Granada. I would understand if they went out on a date & spend more time together that scene in the hospital & the way she was following Jin-Woo during his Quest like a dog Sorry for the term but that's the way I her is not sweet its annoying. Although the probability of Season 2 is slim I hope for it too cause I have the feeling that Marco's Bug is still existing since it was not shown it was delete. I also am hoping to see more of Emma she was 10 times better than Hee-Joo. I want to see more of Spain I literally fell in love with the City the scenery was simply beautiful.

The Actor who struggle the most for me is Park Hoon I really felt bad for him wearing the same suit & being bloody all time I can't believe he went through that.

- the story is good until Jin woo found Hyung-Seok - it is more like Finding Se-Joo to me - Sun-Ho is an annoying character. took him so much time to believe in Yoo Jin-Woo. what kinda friend he is n at the last ep he even asked Hee-Joo to give up her hope - Jin-Woo risks his life/job for Hee joo's brother - it took like a half episodes to build the relationship between 2 main characters (which i dont really mind about it) just saying - the ost is good. im gonna miss the songs

This is really one of the best kdrama I've ever watch. There are numerous people who disliked it but im very into it maybe because i like this kind of genre. So if you don't want mystery and scifi and youre more into romcom this might bore you. Every episode leaves me hanging and i kept on watching and watching it. But youll have the time that you need to sink in the plot because there are a lot of infos you need to sink in to be able to understand the next episodes. What i liked about it is they don't give you a full plate they give you one at a time and you'll really be thinking of the mystery behind it. Some says it was not explained well but for me it did explained well maybe because it has fantasy that makes some people confused. At first I did think it is a tragic drama but at the end scene hyun bin came back and i think i can describe it more of an open ended than tragic. Also, i did find it similar to the anime Sword Art Online and they both have the same thrilling vibes. Moreover hands down to the team who made all of the effects it is so surreal that made more the drama intense. All in all i rate this drama 10/10

Tuesday Apr 22 2019 9:43 am This drama was one of the best fantasy, Sci-Fi, romance genre of Kdrama that I have ever watched. It's not a surprise since it was also a masterpiece of the same writer that brought us "W". Before watching this drama, I read several reviews at Asianwiki. I wanted to check it out for myself and then, I'll critic it on my own. However, I really enjoyed this series despite the tragic ending. Here are my reasons why I enjoyed this Kdrama:

1. Unique story plot with all genres combined - Upon watching this drama, I realized that it contains a lot of subgenres. Its main genre is fantasy drama but is also has a touch of romance, comedy, of course, Sci-Fi, thriller or suspense.

2. Great chemistry of the lead actors - Hyun Bin is 9 years older than Park Shin Hye but that was never an issue when it comes to on-screen chemistry for both actors. They're both good-looking celebrities with great acting skills so, it was easy to love their characters and their partnership on-screen.

3. Breathtaking and scenic areas in both Granada and Seoul- Spain is always known for its two famous cities Barcelona and Madrid. But this K-drama featured Granada and it also has a lot of beautiful sightseeing spots to offer.

4. It's an eye-opener or advocacy against violent video games in a subtle way -The fact that this drama centers on a violent video game, I appreciate how the writer subtle showed the negative effects of video games. My analysis was that, the bug started with Marco who stabbed Se-joo with a real knife. Then, it was repeated when Hyung Seok attempted to strangle Jin Woo. The use of physical force other than weapons from the game causes the error in the game. Nice analogy!

Bob Apr 21 2019 11:25 pm How can I love this drama so much for 12 or 13 episodes and REALLY hate the last episode so much? I was so amazed by the story and acting... The first sign of trouble was the laughable writing for the romantic part of the drama... The writing for their first kiss was awkward and amateurish, and the last episode was awful and did a disservice to those loyal fans... The ONLY way to save this is a second season.

I loved the acting... Loved the story... But I just can't get past the ending.

While some of the points made by other comments here are valid but as a person who enjoys watching and reading fantasy novel for a long time - I'd say Alhambra is not that bad after all.

The plot might be dragging at times plus with the open ending are some of the reasons that most reviewers pointed out. Plus using AR (ala Sword Art Online, but in the real world) as its background might seem new to many regular KDrama viewers.

Similar to 'W' drama (http://asianwiki.com/W_(Korean_Drama)) I applaud the attempt by the drama writers to be different when adapting a tech-fantasy into their story while keeping the usual element of Kdrama in it.

Hyun-Bin, while he has ups and down while choosing a drama to star in, this one is definitely the ups in my book. I was disappointed with the direction of his old drama, namely 'Hyde, Jekyll and Me' which is a total trainwreck, Alhambra seems to be one of his best to date although the ratings and reception show otherwise. I hope Hyun-Bin will keep starring in this kind of genre in the future (maybe with a better script).

Park Shin-Hye is lovely as usual, although her character seems limited and not being used that much except being the male lead love interest. Realistically she has no reason to be around there male lead throughout the drama aside from her missing brother plot which is beyond her ability to do anything anyway. I wish her character was more useful but we can be chooser in this case.

The supporting characters are not bad either, each played their own merit well except for the rushed villain(s) that seems out of place.

Overall, I give this drama 4 out of 5 stars for being different than the usual Kdrama and the story are not that bad as people said. I hope others who enjoys fantasy drama will give this drama a chance.

Why was the ending like this?!? I feel like we'll absolutely get a season two because if you knew there would only be one season why would you leave it so damn open?? I really need a season two :((( it's too good a story to leave unfinished like this

Miss T Apr 15 2019 3:51 am Loved this drama. Was hooked from Ep1 and fasinated as well. Loved Hyun Bin in this he is a great actor. i think the ending was also befitting not so obvious. I would say i wld have loved to see more romance for the leads, but i still dnt get how they got to love each other because i never felt that love vibe from their charaters. More like their love was forced in the script and it was just too emotional for no reason when they barely knew each other.

Shownu Mar 30 2019 10:47 am I will give this drama 10/10 if they minus thousands of flashbacks, cliches romance, drag too long for a scene ( some scene took about 1-3 minutes ,e.g when some of character react to a news) , character's slow reaction ( I wonder if they put slow mo or something) , like to brag out everything (we are the best.. bla2) , certain things leave unsolved, weak plot, the very wrong facct about those fatima's hand and etc. This type of drama should focus more on action, thriller and mystery but I can't believe they put romance as the main genre! Yes I watch it because of Hyun Bin but I'm sorry, I can't forgive this. As a gamer I thought this drama would be cool but unfortunately it disappoint me. I was amazed forcthe first episode but then... Anyway they did a job for cgi. I'm sorry for those who loves this story but this is my honest opinion.

If you love mystery and thriller then i highly recommend it to you. I was a bit disappointed of park shin hye's role though, they could've made it more interesting.

This drama is truly exciting, intense and thrilling right through from beginning to end. A different type of K-Drama - the imagination of the writers making internet games become a true reality, OMO...so real and captivating - Bravo to the writers and all the cast and crew of this wonderful drama, loved loved loved it, kahmsamnida. All involved were amazing, all the actors played their parts so well, it was so easy to hate and become angry at these characters, they did so well, kudos to one and all. Hyun Bin was excellent in his role, he did damn well here, absolutely thrilling and so exciting. Loved his wardrobe too, lol...so handsome! Park Shine Hye, beautiful as always but I feel her role was small even though she was there, just lots of tears and more tears,and I also loved her wardrobe too... Still it was well played out, their love connection was just right for this drama, because it was always about the 'game'....kamsa thank you. Thank you for this wonderful drama, I truly hope these games do not become real, so scary and frightening, just imagine....OMG No! K-Drama has absolutely gone to another level with their script writing, imagination and fearless attitude to challenge the norm...Good work and keep it up...Thank You Always!

The actors gave justice of what the characters need. Cinematography are A+. They ended it well by hanging the viewers with " so Jin woo is in Instance Dungeon?" I can say that the whole team of Memories of Alhambra are genius! They did so many research to make it what it is. Two thumbs up!

At first it was hard to get into because of the fight scenes that no one but the player could see but each episode only gets better and better. Hyun-Bin made it real. The ending suggests the game goes on as the main characters meet where only the lens can see.

Hyun-Bin was super cool and made it real. The ending is a cliff hanger but I liked it. It suggests another world could exist where you could connect and be together. The intro picture resembles the Mecca Kaaba black stone ...did any body else think that?

Throughout the drama i thought this somewhat resembled W, kind of, and later i found this was written by the same writer. So many heartbreaking moments (spoiler alerts), the one that broke my heart the most is when secretary seo died T.T, and jin woo could only watching him get stabbed from the train, the moment he came back to help jinwoo, seeing jinwoo in tears watching him reappear broke my heart. Wuwuw. This drama may not be anyone cup of tea, but it is for me. I still enjoy this drama and hoping for season 2. Hee.

Sam Feb 08 2019 1:46 pm I’ve only watched 5 episodes and i think this is as far as i can go. The idea was promising, i never thought it would end up to be this baaaddddd! Why? Okay here’s why

1. The first few episodes was suppose to build up the hype of the story. Especially watching k dramas, i always want more and can’t get enough. But watching this, even when i stopped at eps 2, I don’t find myself wanting or excited to continue another eps the next day. And this has never happened before. Because the first 2 eps already sooo slow paced, soo draggy, they literally only focused on the game and throw away the story line, the character development, the relationship.

2. If clickbait was a movie, this will be it! They showed us scene in the teaser with park shin hye in the red veil. And about it being a character of a game. It really got my interest, although i also know there’s also the real girl, but i was exited as how they will tell the story, will the CEO be falling in love with a game character, or will she be his protector in the game, or whaattt. But it turns out it was just for one unimportant scene so far. Okay maybe i haven’t seen it all, but enough to know it wasn’t the base of the relationship (it has a really high potential thoooo)

3. And i absolutely agreeeee with fellow watchers that say every episode consist of 20% of new content and 80% of flashbacks and retelling the story. Like seriously they could explore so muuuuuucchhh instead of replayin or re acting the similar scene agaiiinn and againnnn. And i don’t know why the script is so dumb, the thing that we already figure out in like 5 secs, and then they revealed it like it was a big secret and I be like...... duhhh?! Didn’t you already told us that explicitly through the story????!?as if the viewers are bunch of idiots that have to be told to understand this simple plot.

4. Waaayy too many things go unexplained. Let me remind you i only watched to eps 5, but here already these much things unexplained. I can’t really imagine if i were to finish this drama. Lol my brain will be overfilled with questions only. (Example the reason Director Cha died in real life, why Hyun Bin can’t get out of the game. Those really all they’ve been circling around and arounnddd but they gave no explanation whatsoever. Lol what? If you don’t wanna bother with explanation, please at least don’t make it the main plot and maiinnn problem in mannnyyyy episodes on and on)

5. The characters are soo dull. Like the over bitch ex wives. It’s like telling a fairytale to a child where a character can be so annoying and inhumane, like no good whatsoever (and still confused be that BAD character was suppose to be his ex wife, WTH how). Even the main character, park shin hye was dull and dumb and toooooo naive and just fall so easily when he hasn’t done anything for her sake. Yes he bought her hostal, but it was for his profit company. And he only told her to stay to be his shield (almost literally), and she honestly looked sooo stupid to fall for that. Hyun bin’s character also soooo dull! Like he could explain (at least to this subordinate in game that has known this virtual game) what happened the night direct. Cha died. Instead he just shut up and stupidly admitt he killed him. And really i could go on and on about every deffect of the characters.

6. I agree it feels like they only had content for like 5 eps and elongate it into 16 full on boring and excruciating episodes. I seriously can’t force myself enough to watch another one. Surviving this long (5 first episodes) is mainly because kf Hyun Bin. Had it been another actor, i would’ve dropped it in the 2nd or 3rd episode.

7. The ending. I’ve read enough to understand that this is not even an open ending. But just, like an unfinished script. Because of how many confused people and saying they’re like waiting for the next episode.

8. Somehow this drama gets darker when hyun bin sitting in the shower box. That really got me, like he really already wen’t insane and about to give up on his life because the enemy keeps coming back and back (like 10000 times in the movie LOL.......) . And he tell no one of this and just letting himself in the brink of insanity by himself. What a stupid plot??? And he took painkillers, sleeping pills. This really was too far and dark for a story that should’ve been inovative, interesting, and exciting.

9. Remember i’ve only watched 5 eps and already have this much bad impressions.... the only good thing about this drama is HYUN BIN, the special effect, park shin hye. The director and script writer messed this up sooo badddddd

Even sometimes you'll disappointed later because it's just a bait. IDK because it's on cable TV, too much unrelated product replacement scene. The ending also as expected and unexpected typical western series on Netflix. They need to make another sequel, there are many story that they can tell. Starting from Jinu, sub Company for Sejoo, and the next president for J-One. Also about cheater of the game or another company or even conflict between Sejoo's company with new J-One.

I have absolutely LOVED every episode of it especially Min-joo and Jinwoo scenes. Each and every actor did total justice to the role.

Spoiler~~ You have to figureout the ending cause it isn’t spoon fed, it’s actually a happy ending just the fact Jinwoo is trapped in the game. He was in instance dungeoun for a year game was installing and after that makes his appearance known through shooting npcs which he doesn’t need to. I just hope they make a season 2 for it.

By the way, to be honest, I only watched this drama because of shin hye and chanyeol. I’ve never met hyun bin in any drama before so this is my first time to encounter him. And from the very first episode. I already like him. From now on, I’ll be rooting for you. Hyun Bin-ah. Fighting! (Aside from your looks, I really like your voice. You’re the second actor that captured me through your voice from the very beginning.)

The premise -- a variation on the Frankenstein story, where a human creation takes on its own monstrous life beyond the creator's control -- was pretty interesting, so I stuck with the series. The lead actors were excellent. Grenada as one of the settings added interest. But gee whiz, what a let down at the end... I happen to be a Christian, but I felt like the implied "divine intervention" ending with heavy-handed Christ symbolism was clunky and forced, and did not deliver emotional justice to the story. If they want to write a Christian-themed story, then shouldn't that be woven into the whole series, instead of suddenly tacked on at the end? Of course, the fact that the romantic couple were left in a state of limbo at the end felt like an awful disappointment. If it's a romance, gift it a romantic ending. If it's tragedy, a tragic ending. But what the heck was that???

But then i read here someone said to just watch it and judge it yourself... so i did. And whoa, i was hooked from the first episode! I was worried at every episode for the drama to turn to the “stupid-horrible-gigantically dissapointing-drama” but it never came. I love every seconds of the drama. I never really liked park shin hye but this drama makes me feeling butterflies for her and hyun bin. Really. Watch it. For the first time, i dont hate the open ending. It’s just perfect, really. I cannot recommend it enough. The drama is perfect! If ever there is second season, i’ll be the happiest fangirl.

A year in the real world could be just a minute in the different dimension as telltaled by survivors so perhaps food or water is not being missed.

The bug is the confusion between that dimension and the real world, explaining why JW wasn't needing the cane at times. That is also why JW has the bug on him since he got crippled physically due to the game, just like the rest of them getting physically killed in the game. I personally enjoyed the part where Marco wasn't rectified.. Coz he ain't worth the effort.. he hurt SJ in the real world in the first place!

Well, am going to miss the drama as well as the whole cast..loved Seo Jung-Hoon and was so devastated when he was killed and overjoyed when he came back defending JW. ^_^"

CW Jan 23 2019 6:09 pm In an effort to maybe show what I understood about the drama, I'll put what I think is going on,since I see questions from others. SPOILER ALERT~ The game became another dimension, thus another reality. Marco was all ready killed , thus eliminated as a bug from what I remember, could be wrong. Jin Woo was not in this dimension while there, so he didn't need the cane. In a very strange mild way, the program started to have the characters have a kind of consciousness. I don't quite understand why Emma would think of Jin Woo as a bug, since he did reach mastery, but the other bugs were there, so Jin Woo searched them out to rid the bugs. Thus he would retain as a Master and the bugs were cleared out and the game given to ordinary humans(reset). There was an element of "AI interaction with humans and without human help, becomes dark." Something along those lines underneath tone of the drama. It's just how I looked at it, I didn't catch all the details, but if you think in terms of multi-dimensional, it makes more sense.

It was good to see Hyun Bin doing something new and different, it's just what he needed. He did a great job! Park Shin-Hye kinda was just a supporting role in this, which is fine, but it was nice to see her playing an adult. The shocker was actually Chanyeol. I honestly wasn't expecting him to fit the part so well, he was pretty much perfect!! The writing was alittle lazy for this at times, but not too bad. Of course the special effects and the virtual reality of it all was the most engaging. The relationship that was the most touching however was actually between Yoo Jin Woo and Seo Jung Hoon. All and all very enjoyable and would recommend. It must've been a crazy amount of work to make, but it worked.....

How could they see computer- generated people, like Dr.Cha without the smart lense. 2. Where did Se-Ju's real knife stab wound dissapear after Marco stabbed him, it wasn't there even when he boarded the train, when he returned from hiding and how could he have not bled to death. 4. How could characters bleed to death with virtual knifes from the game? 5. How could Jin-Woo's body dissapear while the rest of the killed people's body was found? 6. If Emma had succeeded in completing the bug killing in the first place, would stabbing Jin- Woo have sufficed? 7. How in the world did Jin Woo become a bug , dead people returning in the game after they have been in killed in the game as well as in reality, makes sense but Jin Woo wasn't killed. 8. How did the game make Jin Woo's limping dissappear while he was playing the game? It was a lovely, intriguing drama, but it failed to explain everything that was magical in the drama. I would suggest any viewer to stop watching the drama at 15 th episode because the 16th episode will do nothing except make you develop a dislike for the drama and angry at all the mysteries in failed to explain. I was much happier at end of 15 th episode than the last one. It just made my rating for the drama to go from 9.5 to 7. Despite its terrible ending, the drama is one of a kind and a must- watch due to it's unique plot even though the ending is bound to leave you disappointed.

The cast is great. I think they all worked well together. They made their characters believable. The characters deserve to have their parts played out a bit more.

In order to make up for these flaws, there should be a sequel to explain such loop holes exist when we the viewers would look so ignorant and naive. Finally, PSH should meet Hyun Bin but the last scene was so dark and may not happen along the way where PSH was so desperate to look for Hyun Bin. At least meeting betweeh PSH and Hyun Bin should be regarded as important because that's what Hyun Bin promised. IF so the Loopholes will be negligible and will bring the whole episode worth watching. I hope sequel will be stored and considered and I am sure this drama's rating will soar up ....believe me......

There so many rules to the game, npc can’t go past doors- but yet they can pop up in rooms?... never explained how exactly they got stuck in the game? Did the contact lenses have a defect?? How did they die in real life? When the guns and swords are fake. How come no one else experienced what jin woo and the others experienced? They were testers in the beginning too. You have to be level 5 to speak with Emma but hee ju talked to her just fine at level 1? Too many rules and too many loop holes. I do hope they make a sequel to explain the Chicken many many missing pieces that left some of us in disbelief. The instance dungeon required a quest, to open and let you out like SeJu planned- IF Jin woo was in there how did he get out? Makes no sense, every epidsode was 20 mins of new content and 40 mins of flashbacks that took you back too far into a scene you had already rewatched. I’d rather you spend your time watching something else.

Hyun bin and park shin hye did an amazing job as well as all the casts. I cannot keep thinking about psy and hyun bin's chemistry. It was electrofying. Someone get these two a second season AND pair them up again in another drama!!!! Gauranteed, if you do this, your ratings will be high! For the past 2 months, I have been excited.. Sad.. Worried.. Devestated.. And now, completely crushed and just got done crying and almost throwing up. We need more!!!! Feed our addiction❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Please!!

As a rule, in a K-drama, one can judge the quality of the director and the screenwriter over the entire drama from the closing episode. Here, the closing episode is simply incoherent.

I also agree with the person who wrote that in this drama there is only enough materials for five episodes. The rest is a repetitive jumble of cut-and-paste flashbacks.

Ep 16 didn't seem like an ending, it is the beginning (prequel) story of Next game. SJ has been appointed as the researcher for the game where he can do the research and help to fix all problems. JW suddenly appeared in the game (with no Id) after a year missing both in mortal and game world.

Please make a movie (sequel) for this Next game. Maybe we can see how this game developed and fixed so that it is safe for the user. (It didn't show that user can be ally or enemy, and what will happen to the killed user in mortal world (if a user kill another user in game world)).

Good ending for this Next prequel story.

Other details tell the closing story about each person around YJW, and it's quite satisfying. So no need to get another episode.This is gaming plot story kind of, don't expect it ended like a love story. So I am satisfied with the ending.

One year later he changes his mind about the star being dead or not because it took him one year to think. He acts like a brainless moron. It's just so dumb. This writer has a unique ability to make absolutly engaging dramas that have original concepts and a refreshing storyline with any cliches used in a unique or hilarious/parodic way. She gave us the best kind of ending you get from a fantasy/sci-fi drama that has had a dark undertone and severity in its episodes throughout.

The ending may be somewhat open, but at the same time it is enough closure for all characters and gives a hopeful twinge. For pessimistic viewers who adore tragedy, they can adapt the ending and the entire plot as a tragedy. For more hopeful, realistic and optimistic viewers, they can accept the ending as a satisfying peaceful end to a long battle and happy ever after for all remaining characters.

This show is definitely worth watching. If you do not, you will miss out on an exciting, unique adventure and characters that you will keep with you for life. This scriptwriter specialises in this wonderful branch of suspenseful tantalising fantasy mixed in a slice of life drama, that always leaves viewers wanting more, never getting the full story (therefore the magic remaining alive in its mystery) but always feeling satisfied to have accompanied some wonderful characters in a mysterious heart wrenching adventure.

Overall Rating: 9/10. Cast, production, music, camera, directing, writing, set and everything in between has been optimum. Thank you for providing us another magical timeless piece.

um what?... The ending was so disappointing! we don't get a clear explanation and nothing makes sense. it's a shame that a great concept is ruined by a horrible and rushed writing. After 16 episode i'm still as confused as the first episode. too many unanswered questions. a couple more episodes is needed to really wrap up the story in my opinion. I loved the idea and i loved the actors so i was very excited for this drama in the beginning however with each episode i was more and more bored. the chemistry between the character is pretty much non-existent and their relationship seems forced. PSH is a great actress but unfortunately in this drama the only thing she does, is crying. the pace of the story is way too slow and there is too many flashbacks. i know it's a fantasy drama, but i wish there was still some kind of logic in it. i don't understand the role of Go Yoo-Ra in the drama. Overall, so disappointed with Memories of the Alhambra and i do not recommend it to anyone. such a waste of time. (~.~)

The ending was damn clear to understand if you have focused in each sentence from epispde 1 to 16. Seju, as being master has ability to make instance dungeon which will save them from enemy. But instance dungeon was real which means nobody can see him but he is in same dimension with other. Se ju in fear shut himself in dungeon without roaming around. When jin woo complete quest, he become master (it was clearly written that now he is a master after he handed key to fatima) releasing seju from dungeon. Fatima deletes the bug but that doesn't kill jin woo. When game was resetting, the church was black and white for a instance. That mean jin woo makes dungeon for himself and his level was not reset as he is in intance dungeon.unlike seju who shut himself, he is roaming around to help other. As he is not an real user, he doesn't have user id. Now like jin woo saves se ju by completing quest, someone can save jin woo too. Its a happy ending actually. Viewers should have open mind to understand this genre drama.

I definitely like the story idea of this drama. It's different and unique since I don't normally see a drama with a VR gaming as a focus. It's very hard to catch on and grasp at first though so if you don't stick through the first few episodes, you may drop this drama but if you do manage to watch through the beginning, you'll begin to see the story being reveal.

The story reveals itself at a nice pace, with flashbacks telling you the missing pieces from earlier episodes that may have confused you. The only problem with flashbacks is sometime there are too many flashbacks if not handled correctly and there were some flashbacks that didn't need to be shown because we've seen the scenes already and it seems like the writer just want to waste screen time which could've been used for something else. The flashbacks towards the last few episodes shouldn't have been flashbacks but instead just followed through in the order it suppose to be in.

Some side characters were just a nuisance. They weren't needed and prove just a waste of screen time (Ex: Go Yoo-Ra).

Although there were some romance between the leads, it's not very strong at all in this drama compared to others. The writer seemed to focus heavily on the VR gaming aspect so if you're looking for romance in a drama, this is not a drama for you. The ending of this drama proves this point as the leads don't even meet each other but instead focuses on the game.

Overall, I think this drama had the potential to be a great drama but fell short.

Understandably too, cos he had a hectic year playing the game and all. Even if jin woo actually died, that's still fine too. Not every series must have a happy ending for it to be considered good. An open ending is fine too.

Its ok not to spoon fed us like what other viewers would have wanted. With the story's ending, we are left with possibilities. For me, the writer has tied up loose ends very well and has given justice to the characters. Till the end, our main characters stick to their strength. I can live with that.

I like the superb acting of all the casts especially Hyun Bin and Park Shin Hye. I just wish they'll have a chance to work together again in the future. They have great on screen chemistry.

New to Korean drama Jan 20 2019 4:08 pm I was amazed at the entertainment value of this drama. The story was so refreshing and the cinematography so beautiful. I was hooked after the first 2 episodes and watched each episode at least twice to catch the subtitles and acting. Seeing how the story unfolded was such a joy ride.

Thank you for the entire cast! All did a fantastic job, top-notch acting! Besides HB and PSH, special thanks to the four who played Manager Park Sun-Ho, Professor Cha, Secretary Seo, and Team Lead Choi. There was adequate screen time for each of them to shine.

I wasn't looking for a happy ending, but something logical to conclude such a great story. ***Spoilers***I take that Jin Woo was stabbed and deleted in order to trigger the reset of the game. However, Se Joo later suggested that Jin Woo being the master could have created an instance dungeon and survived the reset by hiding. How could Jin Woo being stabbed and hiding both happen? Perhaps another theory is that Jin Woo being the master was a default user hence was automatically created after the reset. The point that Jin Woo could have hidden in the dungeon is just another misleading line intentionally thrown in by the writer, like the line that very little blood left in Hyung-Seok's body. I find the writer could have provided the last episode with a more decisive explanation, regardless of the emotional state, so that the audience could have some closure.

This drama still deserves a 10/10 IMHO. Level up !!

Highly recommend this drama. It was intense and kept me interested week after week. Hyun Bin protrayed his character so perfectly. He was amazing along with Park Shin Hye...amazing chemistry! The entire cast all did a phenomenal job! Will definitely miss this drama!

Directing also very poor. It was painfully slow and the ending smack clearly of either the writer running out of ideas or that saving the story for a sequel, which if there is one I would not be wasting my time to watch it. It is a shame as the basis of the story is good, even the plot would have worked had the writing been better. One of the worse k-drama I have watched ( I have watched quite a lot). The actors/actresses did their level best to make something of the poor script, the main character spending endless time fighting mostly alone like madman which I feel totally unnecessary to move the story forward, and did little to develop the character interaction with other characters. The main female character was woefully left to do nothing much but a cry baby, absolutely waste of her talent as a brilliant actress. All in all very disappointing.

This drama revolved around the gameplay of AR experience mixed with reality. They stayed true to their concept of being enslaved to the game and gave respect where it was due. Not everything has to be spelled out for people to understand why things really happened when it did.

They had great chemistry, and their work is always outstanding. The other actors and crew also did an amazing job. Although, the story was unique and creative, in my opinion it was not very good. There was very little hope for the characters, so sad. I wish the writer's creativity had been more extensive. A very shabby ending. Oh well! It's an extremely engaging drama with unexpected twists and hooks that make the weekdays of waiting unbearable. But this finale seems a little messed up. Seju won't go out of hiding until someone completes his quest because he doesn't feel safe from the game. He creates the quest out of sheer panic from the bug that dead people become NPCs and hunt down their killers, so he makes Emma become the patcher to destroy this bug after the chosen one completes. And how is the bug destroyed? By getting stabbed by Emma with the master key.

So Se-ju creates a quest for his savior to die for his own safety? Not sure if intentional or not, but wowzers that is messed up...

I really love this drama, but I guess it's hard to follow and understand the nuances if you have limited video game knowledge

The video game is your basic kill to level up game so guys will love this drama, but take the video game away and you have the most basic romance and conflict you'll ever find in a drama. Just basic. Characters have strong reactions and emotions to things and events that in no way warrant such strong reactions. The writer could've added way more texture to the non-videogame portion of this drama. I would've tolerated the countless action scenes more if the non-video aspect of this drama had.. well anything.

As a drama it's fine. Not terrible, not great... not even good if you are really watching it instead of getting caught up in the action, it's just fine. Those who love video games will love it because it is basically a 16 episode video game.

I think the popularity of k-dramas now (especially in the west), is making networks put up big budgets for dramas that look and feel like movies, but behind all that haze is your typical k-drama since the writers are all the same.

Don't let the high production price tag of this drama fool you. It's very much an average drama.

Rider Jan 19 2019 9:03 pm I felt from episode 2 that writer Song Jae-Jung was making a social comment about all the ultra-violent simulated war games people are playing at home, on their smart phones, at the game parlors, and their emotional disassociation from what they are actually doing - killing and mayhem. Are you really suppose to rejoice when you level up by smashing up people? In these games - sure - you're almost being mentally trained to rejoice - but what happens if the game goes wrong, and you really do end up killing - or know that you can be killed if you don't? Will you rejoice then - or become a cold killer like Jin Woo to survive? Memories of the Alhambra should make you think. Kudos to Song Jae Jung.

Nobody in park shin hye's household is worried or bothered to give police complaint when a 17 year old boy disappeared for one whole year. All are going about their life very normally. Park shin hye is crying all the time for her boyfriend, but not her brother who was with her for 17 years. In the 14th episode hyun bin lost his phone and park shin hye gave her phone to him. Very next day morning she has a new phone receiving call from Hyun bin's old phone number. She does not seem to have any better business than trailing him all the time or crying. Yoora was unsteady on her feet when she reached police station. But, within a short time she is completely sober and very steady. The lapses in direction is there everywhere. Totally disappointing.

Of course with any piece of fiction or directing there will be faults. Yes, this drama can feel slow, as it is chasing one main objective from the first episode and the side stories are not given much room to develop, rather they just play a cameo to develop the fictional world. And as such, it can get tiring to wait for that one main objective to be accomplished and thus as the romance is not explored in full depth, diehard romcom fans will be disappointed. (Though honestly, not every drama is about just one thing: romance romance romance or action action action) Anyway... why the fudgecakes does anyone despise this drama though? Even if you expected more, and feel disappointed, it’s not exactly hate worthy. The CGI is also well and good. The game in the show is meant to seamlessly mix into the real world, so honestly, I don’t get why anyone thinks that the CGI here is cringeworthy when it isn’t even really used much or needed? It’s not like we’re treated to any over the top cartoon CGIs here... it’s only really used as a blend to portray real actors/items as game illusions. Next, why do you hate Yoo Jin Woo? Unless you are watching this show with the belief that the sci fi part of it is all just Jinu’s hallucination, and therefore he is a madman.. there really is no reason to hate the man. Is he perfect? No. Is it hard to be in a relationship with him? Of course, the guy is literally in hell and has no prospective future. But that is Hee Ju’s choice and feelings. Not ours. And the suggestion of let’s add martial arts to this story because you are tired of watching the action? Congratulations, you are one step closer to understanding how our main character feels. The game won’t stop going whack, because there has been no one and no way to solve it. Why? The creators were gone, finding a solution meant believing in the impossible, and finding a solution for a previously fictional idea is impossible. Which is why we have had a dark undertone through much of the show. It’s like watching Barry Allen/DC Flash struggle to solve his mother’s murder when she was killed by something no believed possible. So about the martial arts suggestion... I guess you haven’t watched episode 1 of this show. Every player/user in this game has been a normal flipping person. Jinu was an entrepreneur, not Jackie Chan. He barely survived through willpower alone. Did you not see him die miserably multiple times when he first started playing? So when do you want him to learn martial arts? After he almost died from the first glitch he encountered in the shape of dead Cha and ended up losing his leg? The game still works like a game, in that the higher your level, that harder it is for you to die. Therefore vice versa, newbie players get killed easily. Lastly, please don’t compare this to DOTS. For one, it’s an entirely different genre. That was a military romance, and it served well in its part, but it had its own cliche and over the top moments. This is a sci-fi thriller. Not action thriller or fantasy romance.

Initially, I was very intrigued by the idea of building a drama around the concept of Augmented Reality and video gaming. I already had great appreciation for the intelligence, musical talent, dancing skills and acting depth of Park Shin-Hye. Hyun-Bin was a pleasant discovery for me. The other actors are usually good too. But the Director and the screenwriter have been wasting their resources on the wrong things and forgetting the basic need of a drama for emotionally interesting character development. (Hint: a good drama is NOT a videogame).

I have grown increasing tired of the repetitive, mindless and bloody violence from episode after episode with so little substantive development of the story and of the individual characters.

Episode 13 finally tries to move the story forward. After all, there are only three episodes left. But the Director and the Screenwriter are doing it poorly by recycling a chopped-up pile of images from past episodes in a messy and almost arbitrary way. Beyond the flashbacks, some new scenes of Ep. 13 are seemingly inconsistent: why is (past) CEO Yoo Jon-Woo running again like a rabbit after severely limping for several past episodes?

Given a shallow screenplay to work with, Hyun-Bin's and Park Shin-Hye's acting is also becoming emotionally flat... like in a videogame ! The other actors are also trying to do their best with their own shallow parts.

Only the director of photography seems to be having a good time experimenting with complex new shots.

The only thing that kept me watching it were both Se ju's outcome and Granada, nothing else. I also agree that it could've been more magical and mysterious at the same time. The concept is there, it's obviously written in their title opening footage. I guess the budget alone for taping overseas costed them greatly enough that made them unable to execute as planned. (But I really hate the CGI plus the battles, reminded me of watching the local nighttime sci-fi tv shows when I was a kid lol)

Watching this on Netflix with my family was quite cringy, I don't think we're planning to continue so. This and the other negative reviews are just friendly reminders for the people who are looking forward to see every other narrative. We hope not to offend the other fans. I'm also an avid fan of K-drama and I salute them for taking the risk of pursuing this, trying to bring Korean Drama into a whole new level.

I am puzzled that there are people enjoying this drama so much. I started watching this because of the cast (Hyun Bin and Park Shin Hye) but the past few episodes have been really painful to watch. Anyone else dislikes Hyun Bin's character (Jin Woo) in this show? I don't know how Hee Ju puts up with him.

The writer was also probably aiming for some sort of mysterious, supernatural theme but pretty much nothing makes sense. The only thing that interests me now is how they are going to end this and if they are ever going to find Se Ju at all.

I have zero expectations for the ending.

Directing is weak, writing is weak, story is... well there is barely a story really. I'm only watching to find out what the heck happened to Se Ju, that's it and even that is tiring. Everything else is rather pointless, including the "romance". It's an okay watch since there is nothing else on now but this drama is for video game and anime fans and even then, those stories would probably be better than this one. Just like "W", the episodes feel repetitive and slow (for an action drama). Even the constant fighting scenes are tiring to watch. Just so basic. At least include some martial arts or some lame matrix stuff... something that justifies having to sit and watch sooo many fight scenes. That would've at least made the fight scenes entertaining. Watching them flounder around like kids fake fighting in a park is just lame.

There were so many missed opportunities for more intrigue and even the development of the "romance". Aaannnd you kill Jung Hoon, the only bright spark in this dull piece of action drama?!!!

I get Descendants of the Sun opened up pandora's box with their beautiful locations and high filming budget but at least that drama was entertaining. This, like "Encounter", is yet another high budget, A-list cast drama with weak directing, writing and story. I hate when lazy directors and writers use cast and shooting locations to make a drama, then half-ass the script and directing.

You'll get swept up by the eerie, climatic and suspenseful music and special effects but don't be fooled, this drama is mediocre, at best. So so so so much more could have been done with this. I kept waiting for more but now with 4 episodes left, it's simply a mediocre, high budget action drama.

I miss Jung Hoon :-(.

Keep your expectations low (or have none at all) then watch. Then you probably won't get irritated by all the hype surrounding this drama compared to what is really in it.

I'm hoping they will give us a little something at the end. I don't even care about the "romance" anymore. Jin Woo and He Ju seem like brother and sister to me right now. There is chemistry because the actors are good, but there is no romantic chemistry. Like NONE! I like looking at Hyun Bin so as a Hyun Bin fan you won't be disappointed.

Negative points - The actors were undeniably great, although the directing and script were lacking since the plot was already straightforward and predictable. CGIs used were mediocre and generic. They could've established more personality *visually* (UI, monsters, and the game itself) for the viewers to be inclined with.

Good points - Showcasing of Granada was enticingly superb. Even it was just a short portion of the series, it was a nice effort for an international casting from the production team. I also appreciated the usage of the melody, "Memories of Alhambara".

Side-note: Reason for writing a review for an unfinished series is that I really can't stand slow-paced stories. Completing an episode is like watching anime with a 15-min content per episode.

I think this drama is well written and not lazy unlike what the other comments stated. I think Granada was beautifully pictured and was entailled in the story as necessarily as it could be. This is a topnotch drama right here, honestly I haven't even finished Golbin after these years but this drama I've anticipated in Netflix every week. It such a compelling drama because you feel for Hyun Bin's character and get invested into other characters too and honestly this drama will wreck you emotionally. And to me, the timing is perfect. Just I really hope the last four episodes will justify everything that has lead to all the heartbreaking scenes :(

I like this drama. I've been looking forward to each episode every week. It kinda has issues with its story telling but I can live with that. Like, don't stress yourself too much over something you can't control and maybe just let it go.

Sophia Jan 08 2019 8:00 pm Although I don’t usually post reviews no matter how good or bad a show may be... I just really wanted to get this off my chest about this particular drama because I feel like it had so much potential but failed to meet expectations. [spoilers ahead]

To begin, the premise of revolving this story around the “Alhambra” in Granada, Spain could have led to so much more than what they gave us. To what purpose is using a title with an allusion to a place rich in culture outside of Korea if you’re not even going to incorporate it in the plot. Albeit yes, they do somewhat incorporate this place in the plot, but only to the extent of using it as a setting for the “video game” (I’ll refrain from talking about this in further detail for the sake of spoilers.) The title has no significant meaning to the plot to be completely honest. I may be 12 episodes in as I’m writing this but “Memories of the Alhambra”?? Come on. He was in the Alhambra just once (so far). And what memories? This was poorly and lazily conceptualized. In addition to the title, the film setting of the first few episodes in Granada also did not serve a greater purpose. It was simply just a overly budgeted show that chose to use it towards a very well known place outside of Korea. As Granada is rich in culture, religion, food, music, architecture... barely any of this was used in the show to it’s advantage. Could this have been filmed somewhere else without influencing the plot? Yes.

My second issue is the plot. This part may be very subjective but for the sake of having an open discussion, let’s talk about a few things. 1.) the directing/editing style takes away so much from the plot. I am finding myself following a nonlinear story due to the many flashbacks or “rewinds” if you call it that. It was fine for the first few times. But if you’re going to continue to tell your story and then five minutes later a flashback to how it really happened.... and then go back to present day.... but 2 minutes later another flashback... then we’re going to have some serious problems. It’s lazy, it’s not appealing, it’s confusing, and it takes the viewer away from actually connecting to the story. The second issue I’ll have to spoil a little in order to get my point across 2.) the romance between the main characters. We all knew it was going to happen but for a Kdrama, I was expecting much better execution. To be frank, not only did I not feel anything but I was very disappointed on how they approached it. Again, very lazy writing. [spoiler ahead]“I won’t leave if there’s one person that believes me” “I believe in you” “prove to me that you believe in me” “how” “don’t you know how?” *kiss* -.- But it wasn’t the dialogue that disappointed me the most. It was the fact that the writers/actors/director knew that this was the climactic element that would bring these characters together. All rising actions for their relationship also could have been handled better but they could have the very least made up for it in th climax. But they didn’t. The actor is uncomfortably monotonous, which I get it.... that’s the character he’s trying to portray considering the events he’s been through. However, it’s noticably awkward and unnatural. It may be the directing style... or the editing that could have made if awkward and natural but whatever it is, it’s not working. The actress also is seemingly unnatural. I see no vivid connection to her lines, and when she gets emotional, it’s a very whiny type of emotion(?) in other words, she doesn’t make me want to feel bad for her. Which also may be the writer’s fault.

Simply put, I am very disappointed thus far. I’m writing this as I’m watching episode 12. And as there are just 16 episodes, I’ll continue to watch until the end to get a full grasp. I’ll come back and change my review if the next 4 episodes make a difference. Open to any rebuddle.

As for your first question, it is just a dream thats why you dont see Se Ju anymore.

For your second question, when the secretary become ally with Jin Woo, he will be the same like him so he can still see those NPC even without the lens. If im not mistaken, when the server shut down, they will not see the NPC except for those who died during the game. So this also mean that jin woo couldnt continue the quest when the server shut down. This explained in ep12.

This storyline is actually not complicated and definitely a great drama

also why did the jin woo’s secretary still see the RP characters even after he took off the lenses? And when they shut down the server the RP characters jin woo was fighting against disappeared? If the quest is supposed to be connected with reality (secretary dying), the RP characters would still be there even after they shut down the server...

Like what is happening...this drama is so good otherwise and has so much potential but the writer seriously needs to clear things up instead of creating more and more conflict

The plot makes sense and it's very intriguing! And the fighting may seem repetative, but at least it's not full of stupid repetative romance. The balance between romance and actions is perfect. The idea and plot of the kdrama is also very unique and different. If you don't like thrillers than this drama is definitly not for you. Yah, it sucks that the secretary dies, but tbh I'm tired of all kdramas ending with a happy end. This is a 4.5/5 for me!

Nadia Jan 02 2019 7:51 am I don't like this game. I mean drama... no wait game! Oh whatever! This game drama... So much in this game makes no sense at all and it's killing the story for me.

SPOILER ALERT

I was beginning to think the glitch in the game was if you kill another player in the game then your real body dies but you stay stuck in the game as an enemy. So then why does Jong Hoon die in episode 10?In episode 1 Jin Woo was killed multiple times by the game's attackers but he didn't literally die... He was fighting game attackers not other players. This is a major plot hole for me. It's the one thing I don't like with dramas... that fact that it's written as the drama airs. Writers lose sorry continuity when the write stuff that contradicts early events.

And I don't get why Hyung Seok's father has such major influence in Jin Woon's company?

Having a love/hate relationship with this drama. It's my first time watching Hyun Bin and I like him, but this drama is a little annoying. Might just quit and go watch Secret Garden instead. I hear that's a good Hyun Bin drama.

I fast-forward through all of them... they bore me. Now we have zombies?!!!! WTF? The only thing keeping me watching is finding Se-Ju.

Like W, this drama is all about the "awesome" CGI. Cinematography is great, love the cast and the filming locations are beautiful, but the story is very weak.

BENCH Jan 01 2019 8:40 am So, after finishing the latest episode, a thought suddenly popped up. It was about my theory of how things are messed up, the glitches, the death of the players and the "Head Up Displays" and many more that kept appearing without the contact lens. So, if I were the writer, I would create my logic just like this.

The game which developed by Marco and Seju might have some bugs which keep the dead-player-turned-NPC's to spawn infinitely, there must be something wrong in the code that makes an infinite loop. Of course, only the developer can trace and fix it.

I was wondering why the HUD of the AR game, as well as the senses of the players are still active without the contact lens. It might be because the contact lens has layers. One of these layers is the inner layer that has direct contact with the eyes, connected to the brain for simulation of six senses, this layer contains the HUD, and can also trigger deadly simulation which can stop the heartbeat of the player if overused(if the pain overrides the health bar of the player, it can be deadly just like what happened to Cha and Jung Hoon..). This part of the lens is thin. I remember the scene where Jin Woo felt hot while wearing it. This layer must be slowly merging with his eyes, after a long usage. On the other hand, The outer layer contains the tracker, it sends realtime data to the server, such as usage, the number of log-ins and many more realtime infos, which is why, the player is offline from the server without the lenses. I conclude that lenses might be at fault and the moment they wear it off, only the outer layer is removed. It could be intentional or unintentional, however it still remains a mystery. Furthermore, the inner part of the lens must have an upgraded near field communication or something that can still connect with the a near player(which explains Jung hoon and Jin Woo seeing cha hyeong seok together).

The light in the last part of the Episode 10 must be emma, I think she's also a healer who came to recover Jin Woo's Health bar. hahaha :D what a ridiculous prediction, but I still want to share it for some reasons.

My second best drama this year after Mr Sunshine.

Both dramas have Great actors, great story, great script, great cinematography.

I've seen the same scenes like 40 times now. I wish they would stop showing the same stuff over and over and move forward with the storyline at a better pace. Great show otherwise.

Too many plot twists and Hyun Bin and Shin hye have killed it with their acting skills. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the relationship of Ceo and shin hye's sister. Can't wait for the upcoming episodes! So happy netlfix bought it

Memories of Alhambra is my best kdrama as of now and I’m dead if to watch the next episode. The movie is so unpredictable and full of suspense that will drag you to the next episode. It gets more interesting after episode 4 in my modest opinion...Because that's when everything goes to hell...And it becomes a lot of more interesting ;) Every episode gets better and better to be honest. I usually like romantic plots but I must admit I enjoy the "action/thriller" aspect very much. It keeps me on the edge of my seat! Overall this kdrama is very well made and you should give it a chance, trust me.

At first I was like, what the heck with all this game I don't like this drama at all it's so boring bla bla bla, and I was about to just stop watching at ep.3 or 4. But people believe me.....keep watching, I keep on watching 'cause I love Hyun Bin and seriously it gets better and better and so unpredictable. It's not just about the game I promise. It's so good you won't be disappointed.

The idea where virtual simulation transcends into reality is a scary idea that seems to be rearing its ugly head into the real real world, like people marrying their avatars or cartoon characters and loners who sink into VR and ignore reality.

Like travelling around the world to play pokemon. It's the same. Scary but happening.

Which is why l enjoy watching this show cos it makes me imagine the possibilities of our world becoming like that in the drama where the whole world becomes the stage for your ps4. I am thinking 5 more yrs.

Whatever the case, good luck to the screenwriter. Novels, comics and VR games turning into reality have now all been explored. Cant see any other new avenues already.

I will be disappointed if he didn't get recognized for this drama and still Secret Garden. Secret Garden is a fun drama but not meaningful and memorable. So hands down to Memories of Alhambra and The Snow Queen his two best productions.

I love the suspense but its already halfway for the entire drama.. I hate when sometimes drama tend to rush things toward the ends.. really hoping chanyeol will show up soon.. he’s the reason why they met.. its almost like chanyeol only a cameo for this drama.. 8 more episodes to go.. waiting for episode 9 is killing me.

If you loved W:Two World, you should especially watch Memories of the Alhambra without hesitation. Both of them has the same screenwriter. Go go go. Watch it. The PD AGH has successfully been able to get it done with AR setting with brilliant CG work for breathtaking special effects of the video games in reality. Beautiful cinematography But, for me the biggest attraction of all are the leads Hyun Zein and Park Shin Hye who for their brilliance have raised this drama to a height that no other could have. Their acting visuals and chemistry are top notch and memorable. Kudos to whoever is responsible for their casting

I hope it just focus on the game. Just look at Sign which has done so well without that standard troupe - cheesy romance, mother in law problem, terminal illness, long lost children, love triangles and all the sob stories. Please writer nim, dont bring in stories that have been recyled no end. Just keep to what you have given us so far.

And even if I only look at the non-tech angle, for example the romance between Hyun-Bin and Park Shin-Hye, it seems to be full of "rich man poor woman" clichés. As soon as he wrote her a cheque for 10 million, I stopped watching. I'm sorry, but I much prefer the Japanese manga "Sword Art Online", where there was real tech and true romance. I feel like they should've licensed the Japanese story for this drama; instead, they just made a few borrowings from it and ruined them with clichés.

This drama, makes you use your brain to identify the scenes, whether it is a flashback, or from the past or the present times. Overall, i'm really hooked on this drama

One is about augmented reality, and the other is about virtual reality, but otherwise there are many similiraties (or should I say "borrowings"). Well, I'm sorry to say that the Japanese story is ten times better (not to mention ten years earlier). For starters, in "Sword Art Online", the boy-girl relationship slowly develops inside the game, without them knowing their real identity, and while they are both fighting for their lives. In "Memories of the Alhambra", the girl's life is not in danger. She just falls in love with the boy just because he writes her a check for 10 million. What is she, a call girl? And what's with the boy's 2 ex-wives? The added rich-poor story is ruining everything.

Macky Dec 10 2018 12:47 pm I'm loving this drama so much so far! It really is a refreshing new plot for a korean drama. Park Shinhye and Hyunbin really suit each other well and their characters have great chemistry.

Really the only issue I have with this drama is the lack of Chanyeol's character Se-Joo. I wish we could see more of him or at least figure out what happened to him. I'll be so sad if he died. I really want to see a cute sister-brother relationship between Hee-Joo and Se-Joo.
