Im Chul-Ryung (Hyun-Bin) is an officer of a special investigation team in North Korea. His team goes to a disturbance at a warehouse that prints counterfeit money. Im Chul-Ryung's superior Cha Ki-Sung (Kim Ju-Hyeok) and his own team are there to steal the master plates to print the counterfeit money. A shootout takes place and, in the process, Im Chul-Ryung is shot and others killed.

North Korean officials later learn that Cha Ki-Sung has fled to South Korea. Im Chul-Ryung is ordered to capture Cha Ki-Sung and retrieve the stolen master plates. He is given only 3 days to complete his mission. For the first time, South Korea and North Korea decide to cooperate to catch a criminal. South Korean officials though have doubts whether Cha Ki-Sung is really a killer. Detective Kang Jin-Tae (Yu Hae-Jin) from Seoul is ordered to watch over Im Chul-Ryung tightly while he is in South Korea.

Dafuq!?Boom! May 24 2020 2:43 pm Pretty good action film. Really liked fighting and shooting scenes. No goddamn shaky cams and no bad cinematography. The plot is s bit cliched tho, but still decent one. Didnt understand where Yoonas character disappeared tho, and what's with the awards. She was popular because of K2 tho, but still role is pretty small. But Hyun Bin is great. Every of his role - different. That's why you never get tired of him :) I wonder if Hyun Bin insisted to take few actors from there to CLOY.

P.s. they really didnt searched a lot when took Shin Hyun-Bin to play role of wife of Hyun Bins character. What a names coincidence xD

The film is exciting, bloody, and funny with no pretensions: an enjoyable popcorn movie with the Hyun Bin/Yoo Hae-Jin team witty and very effective.

SHQA Aug 21 2017 2:47 am CA is one of my favorite K-movies. I enjoyed it from start to finish. Hyun Bin stepped outside of the box, transforming into the super action star. His hair and makeup, wardrobe and fighting skills were perfect. Yu Hae Jin was excellent in his role. Both Hyun and Yu carried the movie equally. They should make a sequel movie to solve the serial murder case in NK.

Kim Ju-Hyeok 's acting performance as the cold-blooded, murderous villain, was very good. This is the first time that I saw him play a despicable character.

The plot, the acting it's just perfect. Another amazing antagonist Kim Ju Hyeok! Love his acting in here. He nailed his role. An hyunbin too, he's just too sexy and cool in here. Please comeback in kdramaland. I miss you. Thanks for making this amazing movie. Loved it so much.

Don't worry, I never said that Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae Jin were "unreliable". In my original post I expressed my opinion that they were "currently not as reliable" as Jung Woo Sung and Jo In Sung -- because Yoo Hae Jin, though a great actor and with the highly successful Luck-key to his name, is still largely regarded as a character actor, while Hyun Bin, though a bona-fide superstar, had not performed as well as expected in the last few years (as shown by the films and TV shows I mentioned). The "reasonable millions" that you mentioned (actually between 3.8 and 3.9m) are more than reasonable to me, but compared to what The Fatal Encounter / Hyun Bin had been expected to generate, especially compared to films with far smaller budgets and less popular actors, the figures were pretty disappointing -- especially to those production houses that you mentioned. Incidentally, my personal belief is that Yoo Hae Jin is a better actor than Hyun Bin, Jung Woo Sung and Jo In Sung, and will last longer than any of them.

Oh, and neither did I say that everyone should watch "intelligent films", like you claim I did. Notice that I've actually seen Confidential Assignment myself, and as I mentioned before I thought it was great fun. Even though I found it pretty silly (unrealistic, ridiculous, etc), I don't regret watching it at all -- unlike, say, my experience with Rogue One, which I thought was an utter bore. And I haven't gone to see The King either (which, btw, has not exactly been well-received by some of your "highbrow paid critics" -- maybe they hadn't been paid enough?)

However, while I'm perfectly happy to concede to you that Confidential Assignment's success has gone way beyond the holiday season, I simply cannot agree with your comment that movie making is all about money making. Money making is certainly an important part of it, but there's no doubt that many people involved in film making do it for love; for art; for a whole host of non-monetary reasons.

Ive quoted the admission figures more to show tt the two main CA actors are not that un-‘reliable’ afterall cos their previous movies attract a reasonable millions of viewers (despite how unflattering remarks were passed on them, no star power etc etc).

Plse don’t expect everyone to go for highbrow stuff and choose “cerebral political drama” (doesn’t know what these three words mean but assume they refer to movies tt attract viewers with some intelligence to appreciate them) over other genres and attribute the higher admissions for CA to the festive season. CA has continued to do well even outside the festive week. Every genre has its niche. There are plenty of folks (not necessarily simpletons) out there who go for ordinary films that do not work their brain but just make them happy, films that may not have been hyped up by highbrow paid critics. This group of viewers and films do not come under ‘ intelligence” category but the dollars they bring still matter to the production houses. Isnt movie making all about money making? Cant help but sense a hint of snobbery when I see the intelligent word crops up here and there.

kevin Feb 05 2017 7:54 pm This film manages to make the North Korean dialect sound incredibly sexy... granted that's mostly because of the overwhelming charisma of the two leads in the North Korean roles (Hyunbin and Kim Juhyeok), but still, it's a huge shift in perception for most South Koreans, who mostly see the North Korean and Yanbian accents as being quaint, awkward, and sometimes harsh.

I should also point out that Hyun Bin's last film Fatal Encounter was regarded as having underperformed, not even making it to the top 10 box office list of 2014. Like you said it did sell almost 4 million tickets, but it was also trounced by films such as Miss Granny and even the documentary My Love Don't Cross That River.

I agree that light entertainment doesn't have to be dumb, and there are lots of Korean films that bear that out. However, I've seen Confidential Assignment, and although it's lots of fun it doesn't seem like a terribly intelligent picture to me. In any case, CA has just edged past The King despite the latter's stronger performance at the start, so my prediction about people being in a holiday mood over Seollal appears to have come true.

Incidentaly, when claiming that the stars of CA are "currently not as reliable as" those of The King, I included "currently" for the purpose of emphasising the actors' most recent performances. Although Yoo Hae Jin has just had a huge success with Luck.key, he doesn't exactly have the star power of Jo In Sung and Jung Woo Sung (fresh from his success in Asura City of Madness). As for Hyun Bin, he's a star and an excellent actor, but his last film Fatal Encounter was not a critical success, and the less said about Hyde Jekyll and Me the better.

At interviews the PD as well as the actors have highlighted that this is meant to entertain and not meant to delve into the serious political issues between the north and south. The is the genre and we need to have that in mind when we watch it. Does light entertainment means dumb entertainment. If that is the case comedies, cartoon movies could not have existed and prospered!! As for the casts isn't Hyun Bin reliable, isn't Yu Hae Jin reliable? Hyun Bin's last movie took in 4 million admissions, Yu Hae Jin latest had 7 million. Many of the hyped up films with 'reliable' oppas have not been able to get even a fraction of that feat. Last and not least, with the current corruption scenes unfolding in SK daily, who needs to set aside hours to watch something fictional when the real stuff are so exciting and interesting.

I agree that The King sounds like a bigger draw than Confidential Assignment. None of CA's stars is currently as reliable as The King's two main actors, and the story and trailer seem more goofy than cool. Then again, Jan 18 is close to Seollal, so maybe they are banking on people being in a holiday mood and hence more inclined towards big dumb explosions rather than cerebral political drama.

Nia Oct 04 2015 6:02 am I love the producer he had to big movies when he directed them but the main director here doesn't seem to have big hits actually this is his second movie and the first one was a fail so im a bit worried about hyun bin in this one he faced the same kind of pattern in hyde jekyll me in which the writer was a biginner so i hope the producer will do a great job here....i like the plot and i like hyun bins dramatic role change in this movie as some of you said i want ha ji won as a main lead if its action movie or han ji min or park min young so let's hope they r not gonna put a baby idol in this one

Sis Sep 22 2015 8:52 am Like honestly i wasn't expecting this today and i wasn't expecting this kind if movie he is more like romance and comedy kind if actor but this time he is pushing his acting more to the cool and hot side!! I mean can our oppa get any smexier?? who will be the actress though? It will be released in 2017 so jin ji hyun will be available and her child will be old enough or lee bo young and let's not forget our queen ha ji won who hyun bin had best chemistry with . It will be a great idea if kim sun ah is the lead coz she tried to pull that action thriller in masked prosecutor but she failed miserably so with hyun bin they can blow the cinema with their chemsitry. Hyun bin did make a bit if action image in the fatal encounter but he didn't show off his action ability too much because he was the kind but here we will enjoy the thriller and korean dialect!!!! Nice comeback oppa!!

Not just any movie but an action and thriller movie not just korean but North Korean dialect for the first time for him an not just normal acting but acting by learning martial arts!!!! We were supposed to give our oppa birthday present but he gave us the best present ever!!!! I wonder who the actress since its action it should be ha ji won or park min young or gianna jun it will be great action debut for park shin hye too. Please more news please!!!!
