20 years ago, a high school teacher, Kei (Syo Oyamada), falls in love with his student, Hitoha (Honoka Yahagi). Their love was unacceptable. Ignoring others, they go for a drive, but an accident happens. Their time together ends.

Now, 20 years later after the accident, Kei still can't get over Hitoha. Because of this, he goes to the Tunnel of Love in Kleven, Ukraine. The tunnel is famous for making wishes come true. There, he meets Hitoha, who still has the same appearance as 20 years ago.

Hon Li Feb 24 2016 1:54 pm A final word in appreciation of the fine performances of Honoka Miki and Syo Oyamada. The beginning shot of Hitoha in the hospital with an IV is replicated in the final scenes defining in effect the hour of narrative that leaves us to an understanding and appreciation of Kei's sacrifice. Oyamada's Kei is a leap from the very youthful and rather innocent Kei. He is now in his 40's in a nondescript job, probably forced out of teaching after the death (well, kinda, given the ending) of Hitoha. He is not infatuated with the dead as much as captivated and trapped by his undying affection. It is the only good thing in his life, and that's important. The details of Oyamada's life in his 40's, his preparation for the trip, and his continued dedication to his love are well presented by Oyamada. We are gripped by his loss and his seemingly impulsive trip to the Ukraine. Oyamada is convincing. Then we encounter the lissome spirit of his past, seen in the countless recollections that punctuate his days. Hitoha seems to be emerging from a chrysalis, unwinding slowly with the bloody imprint of the past. Honoka Miki's training in ballet becomes apparent, as the emergence of Hitoha from the 20 year slumber of death is a balletic statement as if it were Swan Lake. Her athleticism is apparent as well as she prances on the rail in an unrestrained statement of joy at being alive. However, Kei must recall her from such innocence as he slowly repeats Hi-To-Ha. His efforts are gently recounted as successful as she reflexively calls him "Kei," pretty much signifying the strength of their love. She knows him from his personality and presence; it makes it all timeless. Miki does this flawlessly, smoothly choreographed, ultimately imprinted by the sheer cuteness of her expression. Who else could have packaged the balletic, the physical, the emotion of innocence. It is the timelessness of her love that makes Kei's decision poetic. Good job.

Hon Li Feb 24 2016 3:20 am Viewed part 5 again, just past midpoint for those not using YouTube, where Kei finds a freshly resurrected Hitoha in the Tunnel of Love, and indeed my ears are amiss. It is indeed "Kei" and not Sei as I errantly kept repeating.. That's important, because the freshly revived Hitoha needs to be called by her name to initiate recalling who she was and bits of her life. She calls Kei by his name, something quite surprising in that 20 years have passed and he doesn't look like a kid any more. She repeats his name and flashbacks centering around the camera literally define their love. Part 5 makes their love credible, especially after that 20 year gap; it's a must for the narrative. Well paced, well developed motifs centering around the camera and the inherent flashbacks put flesh on the past. The narrative is more fluid and the enveloping miracle of the tunnel more precise. It's a well told tale.

Hon Li Feb 24 2016 2:49 am I managed to view this on YouTube uploaded in 7 parts by Mariana Espinosa Briones. It's very classically developed with both the opening part and the final part virtually presented as bookends to a tale of understated love and a mature recreation of that love. This lovely piece is full of symbolism and establishing motifs. I will strongly suggest part 4 as a rendition of all of them and as a loving unraveling of the miracle of the Tunnel of Love. The key establishing shot is the 8mm hand held movie camera as it takes on the powers of the miraculous. Then, too, part 4 prepares you for the miracle of miracles in parts 6 and 7, with the phoenix like resurrection, done majestically and orchestrally, of Hitoha. It literally is the miracle of the awakening cocoon. The Orthodox cross atop the Ukrainian church prepares us for the credibility of the miraculous in repeated languorous images as Kei keeps returning to the Tunnel. Hitoha's attractiveness in this "forbidden" love tale begins with this out of place isolated girl who draws Sei to offer her rice balls, another establishing motif, much to the discomfort of other students. However, she proves to be artistic, hence sensitive, and as impulsively communicative as he, witness her tear-filled visit to his apartment. In this meeting we see slash marks on her wrist, a grave foretelling, but one with a twist. It's Sei's discovery that one of the miracles of the tunnel can be activated through sacrifice, literally a life for a life, and that is the final miracle. It's close to a Greek tragedy with all the classic trappings of balance and self-discovery. I had to view it twice after viewing the miracle unwind in parts 6 and 7, and I suggest you do the same. As to age gaps, the young Sei looks like a kid, and Hitoha is always a kid, but the peck on the forehead in Part 7 says a lot about a mature Sei.

Fay Jun 05 2015 7:19 am Wow. Is 2015 the year for age-gap film? While Korea ships older woman-younger man relationships in most of their drama, Japan maybe the other way. I can relate it to Otoko no Isshou for 2015 too. I haven't watch the movie yet but hope it will be touching.
