Indonesia guarantees religious freedom, but in a country where 88% of the population is Muslim, in reality it is an Islamic nation. There are five salat, or worship services, daily in Islam, and the fourth is called the Maghrib. It is a time to wrap up the day’s activities and reflect on one’s words and deeds of the day. Director, writer, and producer Salman Aristo presents a series of different episodes that unfold during the Maghrib in the bustling city of 8 million. [Jakarta Maghrib] reflects on life in the metropolis and the diverse people who live in it: a young married couple who want to make love but can’t because of a crying baby and mother-in-law; a local scoundrel and an old man who believes that cleaning the mosque is his mission; local residents who meet while waiting for a popular fried rice truck; a boy who loses his favorite spot in the arcades; old lovers in search of a shortcut through congested traffic. These are the people through whom which we reflect on humanity and relationships.-- Busan International Film Festival
