Park Yeong-Han (Lee Je-Hoon) is a young detective from Hwangcheon. He becomes furious at the reality of human dignity being violated and he struggles to deal with it. He teams up with his colleague detectives at the Jongnam Police Station in Seoul.

"Chief Detective 1958" takes over MBC's Fri & Sat 21:50 time slot previously occupied by "Wonderful World" and followed by "Bitter Sweet Hell" on May 24, 2024.
"Chief Detective 1958" is a prequel to MBC drama series "Chief Inspector" that aired from 1971-1989 and starred Choi Bul-Am as Park Yeong-Han.
Early working title was "Soosabanjang 1963" ("Chief Inspector 1963").

I hope the other 4 detectives including captain Yu remain honorable police officers until the end of their lives. Hopefully there will be more of this drama series with the same cast formation.

Dakchigo Aug 06 2024 1:49 am @secret In real life, Kim Ho-jung (who played Detective Seo) passed away young, while the original Chief Detective series was still on air. Nam Sung-hoon (who was a patrolman in this prequel) became his replacement. I do not know how they explained Detective Seo's loss because the original series is not available online and the 1970s episodes are lost media.

Detective Nam's actor died in 2002 and Detective Kim and Detective Jo's actors died of cancer in the 2010s, so we can presume their characters died offscreen when they were old too. (The actors who played Detectives Kim, Jo and Nam lent their names to their characters.)

portia Jun 23 2024 10:17 pm this is my second drama of lee jehoon and i guess the rumors are true, he doesn't know how to pick a bad script! I actually cried a lot watching this drama, especially the sungchil episode. I also bawled my eyes out watching the ending of this show where all of his comrades are gone. I know growing old is part of life but it just sucks to watch scenes like this you know.

Anyways, this show is a solid 10/10 for me!

I swear this guy has the capabilities to choose a good script because all of his works so far has been nothing short of amazing!! This one gem of a drama got me into all kinds of emotions especially towards that last few episodes. Me wanting the bad ones to get caught sooo badly!!! OMG. Those considering to watch this, please do not consider and JUST WATCH. You will not regret it!

Frustratingly enough, watching this series had piqued my interest about the older series that inspired this prequel, Chief Inspector, but there's almost zero information online about this older show - which is a real shame. Hopefully more information crops up.

Old ones as well as new ones. Crime makers are very good as well as some are highly educated.

Wish the script writing must do more scouting and searching fr moore crime in the papers or internet.

Dani Apr 25 2023 8:09 am I became a fan of Lee Je Hoon since the 1st ep of Signal when he was telling the girl detective that he knows that a woman kidnapped his classmate yet the police didn't listened to him. His strong justice captivated me with his acting and wished to see him again to play a man who has a strong justice since Season 2 for Signal seems impossible. He was so great there and of course in Taxi Driver too!

Looking forward to see him in this kind of role. :)
