Brian Park Aug 17 2019 2:08 pm I thought this movie was well produced and entertaining. I was engaged through out the length of the film for what could have been a dry academic topic about the founding of the Korean written language. I found the characters' motives compelling, and the movie really did a good job framing what was at stake during that period of time, creating great dramatic tension and humor between all the players.

As a historical drama, there has been some controversy stirred about the historical accuracy, but the movie explicitly is endorsing an alternative theory to the accepted dogma that a few elite Confucian literati invested their time and energy to create such a unique and simple written language for the common people and subvert their control over the masses. King Sejong did look at alternative written languages such as Japanese Hiragana, Tibetan and Mongolian scripts derivatives of Sanskrit, and likely other Sanskrit sources from Buddhist countries in his research. It isn't farfetched that he utilized Korean Buddhist monks the only other literate group in Korea with knowledge and access to these sources. And the persecution of Buddhists during the Choson dynasty was very real, as illustrated in this movie.

So in the end, I did find the movie entertaining, with a real sense of tension and drama without ringing hollow.

It is both beautifully written and executed and it presents the creation of the unique Korean alphabet in an entertaining way. For some, the subject might be boring, but the visuals and the acting are praise worthy. However, do not take it as a completely historically accurate educational documentary. Recommended!
