Sisters Lee Hye-Won (Lee So-Yeon) and Lee Hye-Ji (Ha Yeon-Joo) were very close when they were children. After their parents divorced, they were separated. Lee Hye-Won went to live with her father and Lee Hye-Ji went live with her mother. Their lives went down different paths, but they both went through difficult times.

As an adult, Lee Hye-Won looks perfect, but she carries emotional wounds. Her life is dominated by her stepmother. Her fiancé is Yoon Ji-Chang (Jang Se-Hyun) and they are going to marry soon. Yoon Ji-Chang is the son of Yoon Yi-Cheol (Jung Chan), who owns JY Group.

Meanwhile, Lee Hye-Ji has lived through poverty, loneliness, and domestic violence due to her mother and her stepfather. She badly wants to change her life and takes up the new name of Bae Do-Eun. She then meets Yoon Yi-Cheol, who is the owner JY Group. To reboot her life, she enters into an affair with Yoon Yi-Cheol. Then, she meets her older sister Lee Hye-Won for the first time since they were children.

When I finished watching The Two Sisters, I couldn’t stop thinking about how misplaced the labels of “good” and “evil” were. What the show wanted us to see was a tale of a perfect, loving sister and a bitter, vengeful one. But if you look deeper, the reality is far more complex — and heartbreaking.

The “Good” Sister — Selfish in Disguise

The older sister was painted as the heroine — perfect, kind, and flawless. But beneath that carefully crafted image lies selfishness and complacency.

She knew her younger sister was trapped in an abusive environment. She knew their mother was toxic and cruel. And yet, she turned away. She chose to protect her perfect little world instead of reaching out to the one person who needed her the most.

That isn’t goodness — it’s self-preservation at the cost of someone else’s pain. And that is what makes her the true villain in this story.

The “Evil” Sister — A Victim of Circumstance

On the other hand, the younger sister — the one everyone calls “evil” — was anything but. She was a good child at heart, someone who only wanted love and safety. But when you grow up in a toxic, abusive, and selfish family, that innocence gets crushed.

Her anger, her coldness, her so-called “villainy” — they were all responses to betrayal and survival, not signs of pure malice. If the drama had dared to tell her story from her point of view, more viewers would have seen her for who she truly was: a broken soul shaped by trauma, not by choice.

The most frustrating part is how the drama missed an opportunity to create a truly layered, thought-provoking narrative. Imagine if the writers had reversed the roles — showing the older sister as the hidden antagonist, her selfishness revealed, and the younger sister as the misunderstood victim trying to reclaim her life.

That shift alone would have turned a typical melodrama into a powerful exploration of family dynamics, trauma, and the cost of abandonment.

Final Thoughts

The Two Sisters is still an emotional watch, but it loses some of its depth by simplifying its characters into black and white roles. In reality, the story is far more gray:

The so-called “good” sister is the one whose selfishness caused irreversible harm.

The “evil” sister is just a wounded child, fighting the only way she knows how.

And that, for me, is the true tragedy of this drama — not the revenge, not the heartbreak, but the fact that the narrative never gave the real victim her voice.

Kwan Aug 07 2025 12:59 pm This drama was chugging along pretty good until the 37th episode when it went bonkers. It started with Hye-Won catching Hye-Ji in her involvement in Lim's death and then suddenly jumps to months later where Hye-Won and Hye-Ji were both heavy with child. What??? Did I miss some episodes? This does not make sense when it comes to continuity in story telling.

People are suddenly hit by vehicles coming from an empty road, some people die by falling down a staircase, the bad guys always fall on their feet like cats (everything goes well), the bad guys are always strong and a lot of nonsense. I watched it but I wasn't very happy with it. There are also nonsense movies in my country but this one is a complete disaster...

saengil chuka hamnida Sep 23 2024 10:37 pm epi 50 wow so surprised to see seo ha jun starting a drama in the middle of it i always seen him starting dramas from the beginning as lead actor so its very uncanny to seen him right now didnt see his picture above so i thought he was not in, for female viewers which he has many fans seo ha jun is in this drama so take notice it seems he is gonna take over from half way point as the lead cz the lead actor just died so theres a big hole in there which se jun is gonna take over i think i thought the lead female also died but it couldnt be cz 2 leads dying at the same time is unheard of like might as well end the drama but this drama is only half way the last 10 epis were good cz lots of mysteries were solved but then the writer abruptly end the first half with a jump in time like i dont know how many years cz i never saw that in the subtitles i know it wasnt there cz i didnt skip any so what kind of gimmick was that from the writer very disappointing the lead female is good and like her very much saw afew of her other dramas like miss montecristo which i like it very much

Kam Jun 02 2024 11:45 am One of the worst Korean drama I have ever watched! These twists and turns make a big mess of this drama. Messy writer, messy plots - lots of ridiculous twists. How can a woman like HJ got away with so many crimes! And everyday you hear HW screaming (she’s no better, so poor acting) I am regretful that I started watching. I just gave up half way and told everyone not to even start watching! Whoever’s in charge of this production ought to be fired!

Since Hyewon refused to reconcile with her sister, she continues to be persistent and start creating evidence, pulling a Na Young from Suji and Uri, and whatever else bad things she'll do to Hyeji to get her 'revenge' All while pissing on Cha Ji Eun's innocent over Ji Cheng's death.(By his own fault)

Hyewon may still come out top in the end, but as of episode 89, things are getting unpredictable.

??? May 14 2024 12:50 am I’m not gonna lie when I say that this drama had a potential storyline. Whoever is responsible for this change in storyline should be blamed why the story is messed up. They should’ve focused in tackling and rekindling the issues in the past than like shrugging it off and focused on random things in the present.

The lawyer’s role was so much better before Jun mo and the guy with Hye Ji is the definition of annoyance and cringe with his hair that’s doesn’t suit his face. The twin aunt’s back story doesn’t even make sense. She was angry before that her sister passed away but now she teams up with her murderer because before she used to love her sister’s husband. Hye Jo’s main issue was how she was mistreated when she was younger now her issue is she can’t have babies and wants her sister’s kid. This drama is a waste of time. They should change the casting in this page too as to not mislead the viewers

Lacey May 07 2024 11:11 am wow just plain wow I like the HJ character but I can really do without all that screaming she does. I guess the show has gone in another direction from when it first started. HW acting like that family she married into was the end all be all. The husband cheated on her and the rest of the family treated her like crap even took her son from her and they the writer all of a sudden has her acting like they did nothing to her. I saw someone in the comments talk about the expression on her face. I noticed that. Its the same whether she's supposed to be happy or not. They got two of the ml's fighting over her. One her long lost love and the guy she knew in college I guess. Why I don't know.. she's dull uninteresting and about as exciting as a wet noodle. At least HJ has some fire to her.. as crazy as she appears to be.. lmao. I also would like for them to get into the whole thing about the childhood and get a big confrontation between the two sisters about what HW did that made HJ go with their mother and HW leave with their father.

Godsent Banky May 06 2024 11:35 pm The only reason I'm still watching this series is solely because of my Bae Do Eun/ Hye Ji. She's such a badass and I love her as a villain. She was emotionally hurt by Hye won when she was a kid and even when they became adults, Hye won didn't stop hurting her. I love the way she gets back at anyone who hurts her and she's the reason this series is interesting. I personally dislike the self centered and self righteous Hye Won. Her sister lost her memory, she could have tried to bury the hatchet considering what she did to her but no, she kept harassing Hye Ji as if she's the only victim.

low May 02 2024 6:23 pm This show added so many unnecessary new characters in the drama. The initial characters were so much enough to give intriguing storyline as they did from ep1-30 but they added this and that which made the story more confusing and dragging.

That new writer that came in totally went in another direction from where the show was going before they got there. HW walks around with a dead faced look in every single ep since the beginning. HJ is crazy. The father is dead and there was no kind of confrontation between him and HW for how he went from one horrible woman to another and she was abused by the second woman he married and did nothing about it. The writer seems to have given a pass to the birth mother about all the abuse she put on both women when they were kids. HW seems to down right hate her sister. Before the writer change she went on and on and on about

findi ng her long lost sister and when she found out who it was she didn't even take the time to think back to the two of them as kids.  She just hates hates hates.. and all this started because of what she told her sister to be the one to go with the dad.  HJ feels like HW stole her life and she is in a way right because the father was taking her instead of HW.

She trusts her ex-lover Jun-Mo too easily and does not listen to Baek Seong-Yoon due to her personal feelings for her ex-lover Jun-Mo so I think it would be better for her to regret if her ex-lover Jun-Mo sells YJ in pieces after investing in YJ!

Albs Apr 18 2024 8:05 pm I've watched a lot of daily drama and I know that they need to put a lot of fillers to fill the 100 episodes. But this one, this is the worst daily drama I've watched. The story is okay until Ji Chang died and Hye Ji had an amnesia. The plot per episodes are different each day. they fast forward a lot of scenes then did a flash back to tell the audience what happened. For example grandma and Hye Won's pact. And also Hye Won's ex lover that came out of nowhere. Then now Im Soo Hyang's twin sister that they never even mention until she appears. She wait until now to have her revenge and took too long to Hye Won to contact her to help her against Hye Ji knowing that she's a POWERFUL alliance? I only watching this becoz I already wasted my time and it's already Ep 63 (as of now) and I know there are 30+ episodes left (hopefully) before this ends. hoping the replacing show will be okay. And honestly, all the cast here are amazing and great esp. Hye Ji. they just have a sloppy plot.

kk_3401 Apr 05 2024 7:48 am If anyone is wondering how the show is doing in South Korea, it's doing very poorly. It is doing so poorly that they even sacked the original screenwriter and replaced them with someone who goes under the name "Choi Yu-ri".

According to SPOTV; "Kim Kyung-hee left the production after episode 35 due to differences of opinion with the production team. It is said that there was a conflict between the production team of 'The Two Sisters' and writer Kim Kyung-hee over the development of the story.

'The Two Sisters', which started with the intention of depicting the human will to overcome fate through the meeting of two separated sisters, was hovering around single-digit viewership ratings, but there were differences of opinion between the production team and writer over the provocative plot and low viewership ratings."

IHa Yeon-Joo (actress who plays Bae Do-eun) previously stated on social media; "I can't tell you how many scenes I was hit in just one to two weeks. I was hit with my hands and with objects. It's rude to think that it doesn't hurt just because it's made of sugar glass. I thought that even getting hit was part of the acting, it was the actor's responsibility, so I stayed silent and ended up bleeding like this."

There are countless articles talking about how the show has never been able to go past single-digit ratings, and has only gotten its highest ratings during it's first 12 episodes. I think this show is at a point of no return. Even with the change of writer, the story is still sloppy. I really feel bad for the cast because they're all great and I would love to see Ha Yeon-Joo and Lee So-yeon doing another project together in the future.

Spoilers alert: - new random guy of hye won introduced now that ji chang died - hye won suddenly was a cold witch in the past who dump his ex bc of money - hye won became cold blooded to accept the old lady offer to run YJ to be able to be with her son as if the decision was so hard for her to accept. - old granny suddenly died without reason or motivation - overall, they almost wiped all the yoon family from soo hyang, ji chang, old granny chairman, and yi chul in the story for some time

wnnny Mar 28 2024 8:22 pm Watched ep 48 hopefully, as the storyline develops, Hye-won will never acknowledge and address Ji Chang's grandmother as Grandmother and Ji Chang's father as Father..cruellest, wicked and brutal person. The grandmother including Ji Chang's father think the world can be controlled by them; hence they need to be severely punished including those bodyguards involved in Ji Chang's death...sound like mafia..personal assaut against Hye-won

The reporter/journalist bought by Ji Eun to defame Hye Won and her attorney needs to be severely punished (including Ji Eun)

As for Bae Do-Won/Lee Hye Ji, she needs to be severely punished.

wnnny Mar 27 2024 11:38 pm I just watched ep 47; Ji Chang was pushed by Lee Hye-Ji/Bae Do-Won from the balcony and he was still breathing while on the ground, but who dumped his body in another site? I think either his father, his grandmother or his partner Ji Eun.

The grandmother Kim Myeong-Ae is a wicked and cruel person, threatening Lee Hye-won and not allowing her to see her child, as an elder, should be wise.Therefore, hopefully, Baek Seong-Yoon will help Lee Hye-won to protect her child, and Lee Hye-won never forgive her.

Ji Chang's partner Ji Eun is viciou so hopefully the grandmother be bullied by her in due course.

All characters have an issue with confrontation. Sandeul is one annoying character with his hairdo. I never liked that actor. This is one boring drama and I’ll stop watching for now

Tybolt Mar 01 2024 8:03 pm Whenever I see those flashback scenes, I can't help but side with the child, Hye-Ri. No excuses for her grown-up character, though. It's becoming obvious that Hye Won's child will not live and that the goofy detective guy will end up with her once she escapes from her useless husband and his horrible family. The spinster aunt will become the useful idiot who finally exposes Hye-Ri and her fake pregnancy, so she can stick around as she is the only halfway decent person in her tribe. Lastly, how can a special needs kid run a business? Who counts the money among all of those addle-brains?

He failed Hye Ji and allowed his evil witch ex-wife to bully her and abuse her from the word go. He is the first one who deserves to meet with a horrible demise. Most fathers love their daughters more than anything else in this world. His failure to protect her is unforgivable.

Tim Feb 23 2024 10:29 pm Stupid and boring drama. Hye won is overreacting as if she’s her mother not mother in law. Hye ji looks annoying whenever she smiles. And she keeps on lying using her fake pregnancy as an excuse. Why not bring her home and have her tested. She kicked the doctor several times why didn’t anyone notice? She easily overhears what Hye won was saying and even after arguing with her, they let her drop her off. What the hell is going on?

The role of the brother is a definite No for me he has to act so silly I think it is not portraying Special needs people correctly.Maybe the writers need to watch BB before I watch again C dramas they have actual people with special needs and they are doing an excellent job in normal roles. Nothing against the actor he is doing a good job.I. Will wait until the last episode to see how it ends

I am very sure Hye Won's car have a dash cam and the way she parked her car assure that the dash cam captured it all. So why does Kyung Ja didn't think about the dash cam? And why Hye Won didn't think of checking it? And the big question, why do this protagonist didn't even make copies of this so called EVIDENCE so that they have another one if they lost it or got stolen. If I where them, I'll send it on my accounts, made 100 copies , send it to my trusted friends and most special, send it to the police. And WHY do they need to meet up with the villain and tell and show them the evidence without telling anyone? And why not meet in a public place? Oh. It's I forgot, it's a 100 ep drama. That's why.

kk_3401 Feb 06 2024 6:38 am Currently on episode 11 and I have alot of opinions and questions to say about this series.

First, the acting of the cast is quite nice especially So-yeon and Yeon-joo, though I am a bit biased because they've been my favorites since forever. Bit disappointed with the casting of Se-hyun, I'm sure he's a great actor and all but he doesn't fit Ji-chang. I wish they had gotten someone else or maybe given Se-hyun a different character because he doesn't look, act, or speak the part. Other than that the casting is nice.

So far, the story is forgettable and a bit boring. Some things just don't add up and sometimes it just leaves you saying "huh?? what was that even for?". For example, Yi-ra, she's pretty much useless because all she does is cry, bully hye-won and try to be "cool". I guess her character is just there as another in-law that dislikes hye-won but the story would be the same with or without her. The story is a bit confusing because again, some things just don't add up and there's alot of unexpected timejumps (especially in the earlier episodes). Hye-ji and hye-wons biological mother is so insufferable, same with the drunkard whos with her. They should exit the show asap because their characters are so disgusting. Ignatius is correct, I used to adore Hye-won and Min-tae and despise Hye-ji but seeing what Hye-ji had to go through her entire life, her "revenge" is reasonable. Sure she's bitchy and annoying but oh well.

Story is definitely better than Elegant Empire but not good enough that I'd rave about it. I don't know if it's just me being slow but I hope you all get what I mean.

Now to the worst part, the production company/team behind this series is awful. I believe it's monster union, the same ones behind Korean-Khitan War which is wild because the production quality of this show is bad. So. Many. Continuity. Errors. One shot ji-chang will have slightly curly & frizzy hair, next shot his hair is perfectly straight like he walked out of a shampoo commercial. Some scenes will have excellent lighting, camerawork, etc. then the next scene will have really ugly lighting, super shaky cameras, some times the camera is pointed towards the cast in a weird way. Most of the sets in this drama are well-designed and look realistic, but the others (like Ji-changs tteokbokki restaurant and Hye-jis bedroom) are so ugly and look like they come from the 80s. These things might not be important to others but in my opinion it's what makes or breaks a series.

This drama has alot of room for improvement. The ratings for it aren't doing so well so I hope they do something asap.

Riley Feb 03 2024 4:59 pm At first, I thought that Hye Ji was out of line and just being a witch, but, as the story progresses, I see that she has every right to have her heart filled with hatred and revenge against those who have wronged her. There are only two adult characters with any kind of a heart in the show, the silver-haired ex-wife of the playboy CEO, and Hye Won's aunt. The rest of them need to suffer, including Hye-Won. Her dad should never have let that worthless ex-wife of his have either of his children and should have fought with all of his might to protect each one. What kind of parent allows their child to suffer when she lives but a few blocks away and drops her like a bad habit, knowing fully well what kind of a horrible person his ex-wife is? Next, he marries another horrible woman who abuses his custodial daughter right under his nose. I can't wait to find out what the young Hye-won said to her baby sister to make her give up on living with her dad. I'm hoping that the two sisters will, eventually be reunited and then united to teach their elders a lesson about loss and suffering.

Thea Feb 02 2024 2:31 pm How can the writers make the characters so stupid, why would Hye-Won meet someone at a mineral spring not sure if that person is her sister or not, why not some coffee shop, subway, or chicken place. And is it customs for in-laws miss use their daughter-n-laws/granddaughter-n-laws to use them as slaves, do the cooking, cleaning etc, what happen to the help they had in the first place and they won't even tell their own children do, especially the grandmother's stupid daughter.

The storyline is wack and it would've actually been much better if it was the two girls trying to marry same guy while he's in love and engaged with one of them, there would be so much drama from that too and it also very much make sense than whatever this is. The mother and daughter in law plot is weird and ridiculous. Openly glorifying mistress.Or is the main wife going to die soon and she takes over? Still don't get why this plot should exist. And the father too, you didn't look for your other daughter for years knowing fully well that the woman you left her with isn't a good parent and won't even be able to take care of her? Well considering who he ended up marrying too, I'm not surprised he's this kind of father.

I noticed that this series has lots of English titles; 'The Two Sisters', 'Without Blood or Tears', 'In Cold Blood'.
