Kakunoshin Yanagida (Tsuyoshi Kusanagi) was a samurai, but he was forced out of the Han due to a false accusation. He then lived in poverty with his daughter Kinu (Kaya Kiyohara). Despite being poor, he never gave up his pride and honor that he held as a samurai. Even when playing the board game Go, which is his hobby, he always plays in a fair manner. Because of a case, the truth behind the false accusation is revealed. Kakunoshin Yanagida is shaken and filled with rage. He decides to take revenge, even if it means he will be torn from his daughter.

Un modeste admirateur May 30 2026 5:13 pm Visually, this is one of the better Japanese films I’ve seen this decade. My favorite scene is the duel between Yanagida and Shibata over the go-ban, with the sunset in the back, and big close-ups of the faces of both duelists and witnesses. This scene and one or two others were worthy of the great 20th-century producers, like Akira Kurosawa. If you’re into « chanbara » (samurai cinema) or even classical « westerns » about vengeance and honor, I highly recommend « Go-ban-giri » (which means something like « Cutting the go-ban » ; it was translated as « The go player » in French). Where the movie felt a bit short is that there was not a single note of humor. But as long as you’re not turned down by its seriousness, the movie is majestic, subtle, intelligent, and ends reasonably happily.
