Lee Tae’s (Lee Joon) father deposed the king with the help of Park Gye-Won (Jang Hyuk) and his father became the king of a new dynasty. After succeeding his father, Lee Tae then became the next king. Lee Tae believes any action is justifiable to achieve his goal. He wants to rule as an absolute monarch, but First Vice-Premier Park Gye-Won opposes that idea. Park Gye-Won is even more powerful than the king.

Meanwhile, Yoo Jung (Kang Han-Na) is a daughter of a noble family. Lee Tae thinks of her as his wife. Due to that, her family gets involved in a power struggle in the royal court.

Tara Feb 22 2026 12:21 am The first few episodes were good , and i was waiting for what it would come , but you need to understand that this drama is different from other saeguk dramas , and literally is " conflict" The whole story is just about the kingdom and queen selection, it only focuses in the palace there no funny scene at all , characters are limited again focusing only at the palace There were so many discussion between king, and consort park crying, i guess they wanted to imply and add emotional support to the scene but failed . Every time they talk they are crying and they don't do something out of line , like she just accepts him after finding out that he lied to her? , also park gye won aka councilor park , i just can't explain how different he was in each scene , even after ending i didn't get to know what was he's motives and he's always in discussion with king and consort park , it's like 90% if the whole drama After the first half the story went in circles one minute they're fighting and then the next scene they're hugging I feel like it could have been a book cause there's so many unspoken things going on which suits book themes and after a while I didn't know what the hell is going in , again one minute they want to kill this person the next they let it go ? I think it would be suitable for a 9-10 episodes, not 16 causes they were going around trying every possible plot and trick that didn't work out The ending was not satisfying for me , they just finished what needed to be done in 10 episodes Overall, it was a weak drama i actually stayed till the end to see if it would change

dramadramadrama Aug 21 2025 5:17 am Can't believe I finished watching all the episodes. It started out a bt boring then got interesting after ep 3 then got boring again after ep 10. I feel like this could have been a 12 ep drama. The ending drags out and after a while you will feel like the story is going around in circles. I didn't get the ending where Consort Park wanted to keep the King in check. Hello he is a King. Also, the actor playing the king is always just crying or gonna cry in every episode. Quite a weak King also. I like historical but overall this one is lame

Park Min Dec 29 2023 6:09 pm The drama had a good selection of cast with decent varied performances. Jang Hyuk working double and triple shifts here. It had some interesting characters, especially Gye Won which I feel we didn't get enough of him. While the story may have been fine for the first half but it took a worse direction in the second half, losing whatever interest and build up it had previously. The keyword here is "odd" regarding the state of the production. Odd and questionable choices of the soundtracks, some of which didn't fit. Odd and questionable shot compositions and editing. Some shots had slightly different lighting or color grading of the same scene. The drama is filled with very long takes/shots that were too annoying after the 3rd time, it came off as a poor attempt in trying to mimic film, most of them didn't hit right. The only highlights of this drama were the intriguing 1st half and the character Park Gye Won.

Matthew Feb 11 2023 6:06 pm think this drama is different from historical dramas in general. especially from the story style and shooting. I mean when compared to other historical dramas it's a bit difficult because Bloody Heart is quite different. no casual, funny or fun scenes at all.

And quite interesting with the concept of this drama. calm, full of tension and conflict, anger or annoyance, mixed emotions. lots of long silent scenes. each dialogue is spoken slowly and for a long time.

This drama only focuses on telling various problems in the kingdom/palace. Throughout the story you keep seeing kings, queens, ministers, royal families which are always full of problems and conflicts. they did not reveal much about the situation in the village or outside the palace.

to be honest in the early episodes a little boring. but if you follow the story, in each subsequent episode it will continue to be interesting.

I'm a fan of Lee Joon and yes here he gets emotional roles. I feel the figure of the king here is portrayed as a weak figure and is always underestimated by others. not a formidable and strong king who can give any orders like the king we imagine.

Ned Jan 29 2023 11:13 am 3 episodes in and I'm loving in. I don't get all the fuss about the slow plot? The storyline flows naturally and allows for the story to set in for me. Don't expect this drama to be fluttering or lighthearted as this is a quite heavy saeguk kdrama. The chemistry between the two leads are ? tho.

Sasa Sep 11 2022 8:11 am Finished this few days ago. At first I am skeptical to start a Sageuk but it turned out to be great. I didnt expect that I would fall for the other couple. Their story are so heartbreaking. Also Kang Hanna I love her since Start-up but there is no chemistry going on with the love interest. The king is so dark but I understand it very well although the delivery of the actor for me is too much I couldnt watch comfortable but overall this is great!

As regards the storyline of the drama, the king appears to be a foolish king, blinded by false emotions and he is under the illusion that he is smart. At first he played his game was going good until he broke the promise he made to consort choi and her father. Someone who is not capable of upholding a promise is not worthy of being a king. He could have approached those two in a manner that they wont feel betrayed. He dragged them to the hell called Palace, played with a innocent girls feelings and just when he had no use of her, he dropped her. 2) Councillor Park appears to be a villain at first, but he is just a victim who went down the wrong path trying to prevent tyranny. His methods are not justified in any way, but in the era they lived in, you have to roll with the pigs to defeat one.

However the show was too imbalance in distribution of story line/flow. Like how the conflict were develop, they consume a lot episode for this and because of that the climax and resolution part were short. But the positive side of this flow, they destroyed the perspective ideas of the viewers in which how the show were process to reach the end. Because of a lot of twist and surprise in making plans of the cast.

Also I agree that this show must have add atleast 4 more episode

Fantastic drama set in the Historical time of the Joseon Dynasty. I had just finish one superb historical drama with a multitude of my favorite actors then I found this GEM!!!

I love this actor Jang Hyuk in his historical rolls. He has a quality that keeps me watching! He has stared in many historical dramas and I look forward to more to come. If I could only name 3 actors I would watch because it’s them, his is one of them if not the best. Thank You to all the actors who also made not miss a second of this series!!!

Dewe Jun 21 2022 7:34 pm Fully agree with the previous commenter (bh) - this had the potential to be one of the best saeguk drama around, and it deserves/ needed more episodes really. so many stories to tell with such a talented cast. it's one "weakness" (which actually sets it apart from many other dramas) is that it didn't try to be an audience pleaser by adding comedic scenes/ swoony romance/ makjang tension climaxes - which is probably why it didn't draw as many audience as some of the recent saeguks. throughout it all i felt like i was watching a Shakespearean adaptation, beautifully shot and marvelously acted

bh Jun 21 2022 6:01 pm This would be the best sageuk ever if it was longer. There could've been multiple arcs to show natural character development. Not just for the main four but everyone. And I say everyone because literally every character was interesting in some way. I hope we see this writer&director duo again. Actors also did well but again, I don't think they were given enough material to work with.

Even a mere servant can control him (SPOILER ALERT giving an order to kill Queen Dowager). wth if it wasn't PJW or consort Park he wouldn't have had a throne to sit on, even if he managed to stay a king he would've been some stupid tyrant hated by his own people. hope his son doesn't take from him and takes from his mother her wit and leadership.

sf Jun 21 2022 1:38 am Years of work are going to vanish because of consort Park. Who was the tyrant in this drama, the previous king, Park Gye-Won, Queen Dowager, Lee Tae? In the name of the country, all of them killed people without remorse to reach their goal. I never had any special sympathy for consort Park, so if Lee Tae will decide to finish his relations with her, I won't have any problem. She will be always a pain in the ass for the current king, and she will have her own goals to reach in opposition to the king. She better would be eliminated now than too late.

Lobela Jun 18 2022 3:50 am Heyyyy this drama speaks of women empowerment. I love how the drama highlights the female characters here, they were far different from the typical kdramas. I have to admit that the king was indeed outshined by councilor park and Lady Yoo Jong/ consort park. They appear powerful to me than the king who always cry in his every scenes, truthfully speaking, he lost the spotlight as the main lead in this drama which made me think that maybe this drama was really focused about lady yoojung/ consort park.

Councillor Park!! I am so invested with his character, during the first episodes, I really thought that he was a villain but as I go on, I slowly understand his real feelings and desire, and it is to stabilize and protect his country. However, he was blinded by fear and trauma from the tyrant rulers of the past, he doesn't want that history to be repeated that's why he wanted to take control over the royals. Queen dowager, his lover, was his biggest mistake. It was partially his fault, he turned Queen dowager into a villain by overusing her, abusing the love and sincerity of the Queen dowager. I just felt bad for them both but I love Their story more than the main leads.

Farrah Jun 18 2022 2:51 am i need to talk on what will happen on ep15 and finale! ahhh..i do enjoy a lot of Joseon era dramas. i love em all even though most of the time the plot storyline always almost the same, kudos to Bloody Heart whereby the twists and stories are expected yet not soo too.keeps in on the edge on who what why ! strong and smart female lead! i put off the show and so glad i did not!

Yeon Seon Jun 15 2022 2:39 am I'm too furious about the Ep 13. Queen Dowager killed plenty innocent girl and officials very brutal way no matter what she had a pity life or out of jealousy. She must be pay a price by her life. Also consort Choi. since she only worryes about herself. I don't have a sympathy anymore since she tortured and killed a girl. It shatter my heart. Poor CP that she had to suffer a lot. King is too late to helping her now. I hope that baby is still healthy.

Enough drama and tension to hook you in and wanting more but not an overdone plot.

I was hesitant of FL as to how she can deliver but she is on par with rest of the talented cast. Team thanks for giving such a nice drama to watch.

The suspense, the romance and the action by the Queen Dowager, Consort Park, and Councilor park..

All casts really nailed their roles and I am amazed with that, but the only person that annoys me the most is Lady Cho, she is too.childish and naive... How can you still trust the Queen Dowager even what she did to.her in episode 10&11, oh no... I.hope nemesis catch with her... Lol

Kudos to KBS, all Casts and crew... And hoping the drama ends with a happy mood

Earl May 31 2022 11:09 am Episode 10,as usual the king is still cries,though no longer appropriate in the scenario.I find PGW and Lady Park scene much more intersting than w/ the king.PGW and Lady Park has a good chemistry,not in a romantic way..Both has the same wave length. In this episode,PGW sided Lady Park over Queen Dowager...It seems PGW really shows loyalty on their country since Lady Park is the queen,though she was not really his true niece and also a threat to him.

Normally I absolutely LOVE period drama's and definitely when it's a love story between a king and a lady from somewhere (like the previous period drama that got good rates this year) but I just cannot get into this... I'm only at ep3 but I think I'm gonna quit it.

Gift May 25 2022 1:20 pm Lee joon acting, with no offense, is so exaggerated! Whenever Lady Park comes near him, he starts to cry (especially with his Left Eye). This is really excessive. Not to mention he speaks with slow motion that makes me wants to speed the scene whenever he talks. Sorry but I can't continue watching this at all

Sometimes I feel like Lee Joon's acting is a bit too much. He speaks with his eyes really well (amazing, actually) but his voice sounds to teatrical and overdramatic.

I just love how her thoughts developed gradually showing in her face from bewilderment at his harsh words toward her, and eventually coming to a deep understanding and appreciation of his love. She understands now (at end of episode 6) his pushing her away were acts of love. She decides to stay and be by his side.

So, the question is; will their combined intellect defeat Councilor Park who pimps young girls into being royal consorts that he controls. It is obvious Yoo Jung is not actually subservient to Councilor Park.

He brings a realism to any drama he’s in, I prefer he be the good guy, but I can’t stop watching because he’s so good!!!

Perhaps she knows from her own hardships the world is a cruel place and one has to be willing to do what it takes to survive. The reality of this period in history I'm sure was far harsher than the drama presents.

I've watched bulgasal, but i didn't know that lee joon has this deep voice that made me in-love. I'm looking forward to kang hana's acting in a more intense scenes! l very much love historical dramas and this made me intrigued. Overall this is a great historical drama. It has a hopeful number of ratings, so i hope that it will get high ratings as the episodes add up.

Lee Joon has at times a droopy-eye (zombie) look that made him the ideal villain in Bulgasal. Unfortunately—for me at least—his villainous look in Bulgasal followed him into this drama. I just don't see any chemistry developing between these two actors. He's just the wrong actor for me to get into the drama.
