Set during the Joseon Dynasty period, four people from different walks of life come together to make Prince Lee Geum the King and reform the Saheonbu. The four people are Lee Geum (Jung Il-Woo), Yeo-Ji (Go Ara), Park Moon-Soo (Kwon Yool) and Dal-Moon (Park Hoon).

Lee Geum is a prince, but, even though he is smart, he is not recognized as a prince due to his mother being born in the lowest class.

Yeo-Ji is damo at the Saheonbu. She investigates cases enthusiastically. She has a talent for the martial arts and foreign languages. Yeo-Ji is the best investigator at the Saheonbu including the male investigators.

Park Moon-Soo has been preparing for his exam to become a public officer. He is not very smart and has difficulty with the exam, but he is honest and tender to other people.

Dal-Moon is a famous clown. He is good at martial arts.

"Haechi" takes over the SBS Monday & Tuesday 22:00 time slot previously occupied by "My Strange Hero" and will be replaced by "The Secret Life of My Secretary" on May 6, 2019.
"Haechi" or "Haetae" is an imaginary animal, able to discern the innocent from the guilty.
First acting role for Jung Il-Woo since finishing his alternative military service on December 2, 2018.

Park Min Dec 23 2023 6:39 am The drama had so much potential, but never managed to break through. The pacing was inconsistent for its elongated cool-down periods and its redundant flimsy 24 episodes. One moment you're going at a steady pace and the next, you're like, "Come on, let's get moving!". These long breaks in between didn't even serve a meaningful purpose like to develop the characters or build up for what's next. It should've been cut down to 10-12 episodes while cutting off the nonsense and focusing on the politics. The story slowed down and became less interesting in the 2nd half when the prince went into the palace. On another note, Go Ah Ra, she didn't fit her role at all, too fragile and soft looking. Strangely, her character (Yeo Ji) got demoted to a guest character in the 2nd half, little to no contribution or screen time. If I have to take a guess, the character didn't really fit the narrative to begin with, so it was hard to keep her around in the 2nd half, which also explains the attempted romance, the writers were desperate.

They have chemistry and Jung Il Woo very protective king to her beloved Haechi Go Ara. He is so funny and charming to girls. Even they have many episodes still it will mark to history of drama.

Daisy Dec 30 2021 7:40 am Must watch if you love historical drama and this one is based on true story. Never a boring scene and always intriguing. Amazing and talented actors particularly Jung Il woo, Jung Moon Sung and Lee Kyoung-Young.

I strongly recommended this drama if you are looking for a great historical with quick-witted conversations and political stories. I would say this is one of the best historical K-dramas.

Leo Jan 28 2021 1:11 pm This drama deserves much higher rating. It's a sequel from Dong Yi (the best historical drama). This is not romance so if you're looking for that genre, stay away. This is about a history that really happened during joseon era(based on historical fact) but they make every scene interesting and not boring at all. The romance part is not necessary, just like someone said below, the romance between Yeoning's parent in Dong Yi is more entertaining . The storyline alone is perfect, the actors are super daebak especially Jung Il woo and Jung Moon Sung.

I recommend this drama if you are looking for a great historical and touching story. Who knows that a lowly prince that everybody against with because of his mother's status, he became one of the greatest kings of Joseon and reign for 52 years!

ain Apr 16 2020 11:28 am I watched this drama for the second time, and I realized that the drama has similarities with the Dong Yi drama, the only difference is the role haha. I can only say "like mother like son". Suk bin dan Yeoning are equally demeaned because of their status but they prove with extraordinary abilities, the proof is that both Suk bin and Yeoning are equally loved by their people. The drama tell us how they fight for the truth and melt the hearts of their enemies. But I don't particularly like the story of Yeoning romance (which in the Haechi drama is said to be a historical rework, meaning fact), for me his mother's love story is more exciting even though it might be part of a fantasy?. I really like the sukjong-sukbin-yeoning story❤?

At first I was expecting some romance between Yeo ji & Yeoning Prince (I'm a fan of both Ara&Ilwoo) but the story was so great that it doesn't need romance to make the drama more entertaining. I've watched the drama three times because a good drama deserve to be watched numerous times. Unfortunately Yeoji doesn't get much screen time as I believe Ara injury contributed to that. Hopefully Haechi team will be awarded at year end awards.

I've never been dissapointed with a Korean historical drama and I have always enejoyed them for their amazing story lines. Nothing comes close to historical dramas.

the whole cast was amazing; especially Lee kyoung young who deserves a major award for his role. His voice was just suited for this drama and what a gem he is. Totally recommend this drama!!!!

IDK Jul 05 2019 11:31 pm among the Historical Drama this is totally Unique & Rare because the Writer was able to show the real struggles of King Lee Geum its Refreshing to see a story about a Lowly Prince slowly becoming the King. It would been better if there was a Written Will of the late King instead of words although the King words is powerful but its more powerful if it was Written. It was really pathetic see every time someone says "because that whats the King wants" I feel sorry for Lee Geum that this is the only reason why people around the palace became nice to him. It would have been better if there was a Written Will because it will leave more impact.

I was really disappointed with Yeo-Ji's character development I really love her Strong Persona WE SERIOUSLY NEED MORE WOMEN LIKE THIS! Even she is a Woman she capable to show the right to Wield Sword, Knows Battle Tactics & Outwitting Enemy she deserves more the fact she is also Smart but her character ending up as a Court Maid? I don't know what the hell the writer is thinking I was really Speechless about it. THIS IS NOT how you portray strong women I wish the Writer could have been braver to take risk & shown that Lee Geum can trust his girl not because he sees her as weak but he knows how strong she is. Honestly its tiring to see women being portray as Damsel in Distress, Whining like a baby & Acting Fragile.

And most especially Jung Il-Woo as Prince and the King he never fails to amaze me in all his dramas, his facial expressions for each scene is well acted on. Park Hoo as Dal Moon is ?????? and hats off to Jung Moon-Sung as Prince Mil-Poong

Ferra May 13 2019 4:11 am This drama seems like a revenge story from The Moon Embracing The Sun. Jung Il Soo in The Moon couldn't be the King and died at the end of story. In this Haechi, he become the greatest King. Both of The Moon & Haechi were the best Saeguk drama. Great Dramas.

So nice to see the story continue from dong yi (jewel in the crown?) to haechi (king yeongjo/yi geum dong yi son) to yi san (yi geum son). great drama.. fills in the time between Running Man episodes!.

MyILWOO May 06 2019 7:42 pm Haechi is the best role of Ilwoo oppa. I'm grateful he got this role. He did very well. And Go Ara and the rest of the cast are amazing! Great historical drama and the ending is truly satisfying. Full of hope. Plus the exchange smiles of Yeoji and the king at the end - it's calming to the heart after all the hardship they all went through in the plot and in making this drama too.

It is a brilliant historical drama! This is an example of a good epic drama without falling in the tragic end.

Hey May 04 2019 1:45 am I had no idea that the episode I’m watching rn is the last lol I can’t believe it’s ending already, I wouldn’t mind if it had like 100eps this drama is daebak... although the main casts kinda have the worst chemistry but I love them and it’s good the writer didn’t really focus on their romance. Anyways goodbye haechi.... this is definitely one of the best drama I’ve watched this year.

I love all the character especially jung ill woo, he really did great picturing prince yeoning,Kwon yool also acted so good and funny, and go ara also so good and i felt sad because her scene get less after her injured but i can understand it, but she still doing it well. Im so mad because people said she cant acted and less emotion, but for me the fighting scene really good and you just hate her and will talk bad about her even she is doing really well. I dont understand why people cant feel the love between her and jung ill woo. Im not a fan of her but find her acting really good here. They were so good together and my heart racing everytime their scene haha. This is just a good drama to watch, i really recommended it.

I am really amazed to Kwon Yool, I watched him in the drama Let’s Fight Ghost, wherein he was an antagonist and also in Voice 2. I am a bit ‘shock’ in his character in this drama though. :) :):) He is good; they are all good actors and actresses.

every episode has it's own controversies that you want to dig more..  Your curiousity and wide wild imagination starts to build up..  I am not very fond of reading historical events.  But this drama made me read Joseon history wherein Prince Yeoning background was my target.

Jung Il Woo really moved me. With his every lines that captures ones conscience. His teary eyes that makes you want to cry with him. The courage of his character to fight despite all the words they threw at him.. despite all the hindrances he faced.. Woaaahhh.. Thank you guys for making my whole day so wonderful.. I've learned so much .. Not only on the historical side but also the word of wisdom you gave to the audience. An excellent job!!

stumpdII Apr 18 2019 9:11 pm Lee Geum is Dong Yi's son. Lee Geum is also Yi San's grandfather. so it kind of connects dong yi 2010 with yi san (2007). I only binge watch so i cant wait to watch this. Comments look good. I do wish there was some romance tho. I wonder if dong yi is represented in this drama.

Where may try to pull up a bit of jung il woo and ara romance. Its so bad that this drama is all about politics. And repeatedly again facing the same problem trying to take jung il woo down. Please create the romance seen, it gets so boring now. You should quickly make jung il woo meet go ara!!!’ Whats the point she came back then. Just let him see ara in the palace directly dont make anymore games, distraction or whatsoever

No go ara plz Apr 07 2019 8:01 pm I have never seen such a dumb character called yeo ji. What's wrong with the writer..it surelly isn't adding anything to the plot except for annoyance. Seriously it looks like u want to add just another female to the drama . As it is her acting skills are me and on top of that this stupid characterization. It's a boon that to the drams that she is absent for few eps.

sophia Mar 13 2019 6:34 am i am so obsessssssss with this drama,intense and thrilling at the same time,Go ara as Yeoji well there is nothing to complain,people give her a chance,there is no awkward moment from her in this drama,she keeps improving,and the one reson i love her character in this drama is she is not a dumb shell in distress,she is such a badass,with all the fighting scene omg i just fall in love with her character,and she is also super pretty,and the romance and her chemistry with Ilwoo is on point,but what is wrong with the ratings, i am so mad this kind of drama deserves more recognition and higher rating, i will give 9.8 out of 10,kudos to all the actors and actress,they are doing a great job

Innyheart, dr Feb 26 2019 9:23 am Watching the first 2 episodes...so far is great. Jung ill woo & kwon yul are seasoned actors. Kwon yul had most of the times in previous drama played the bad guy- and he always played the role too well! Go Ara is so far so good- i have seen her in miss hamurabi...and she did a great job there...she was really good as compared to when i watched her in hwarang. So fighting go ara...you can do this.. A historical drama...i’m looking for one to replace the crowned clown since it is almost coming to end. The crowned clown is really a beautiful drama that makes my day. I hope haechi too will be great... So again....fighting...:)

too phat Feb 25 2019 10:04 am an epic historical drama..Haechi reminds me with Hwarang because of the bromance jidwi and seowoo and same goes to prince yeoning and monsoo..love the triplet brotherly the eldest prince yeoning second brother monsoo and the young sister yeoji..monsoo always makes funny love this drama but im so sad because the prince reon ryeong died..i just cant wait for the next episodes

Genesis77 Feb 20 2019 8:14 pm I have really been enjoying this drama. The entire cast is great. How cute is Moon-Soo x Yi Geum's bromance...I find it adorable. That aside, this last episodes were seriously sad and heartbreaking...to lose the father and brother in the same episode and time...I cried. I now wonder what will happen to the lowly prince and the Crown Prince, least everyone forgot all about....will the Crown Prince, step up and have a relationship with the lowly prince and protect him, to make him sit on the throne because it seems he trembles at the thought...or will he abandon all of it to save himself.

jan Feb 14 2019 1:14 am Very promising. Story and cast are all good so far in the first 4 epi. I only hope this continues and maybe even better in the next episodes. If it does, then, they better have it run longer. So good to see jung il woo again in historical drama. My all time fave actor of his age bracket. He's good in fighting.. physical and sword fight that is, like in moon river, a diary of night watchman and moon embracing the sun. Great in action. I have yet to see him tho in current time action drama. Like police or crime story.

Please keep up the good work, actors, writer and director. Thumbs up and hats off to you guys.

The cast is amazing, all of them are very good actors and this makes this drama even better. And I am so happy to see Jung Il Woo, I missed him so much and for sure he is perfect for this role. Can't wait to see the next episodes
