"Soul Mechanic" follows psychiatrists as they try to cure people of their emotional wounds.

Lee Shi-Joon (Shin Ha-Kyun) is a psychiatrist at a hospital. He is passionate about his work and helping his patients.

Jen Dec 27 2023 5:43 pm How can psychotherapy help a delusional patient? This is 1960s psychiatry being practised in Episode 1 in a modern Psychiatric Unit in 2020. Completely unrealistic. Treatment with an antipsychotic drug such as quietapine or amisulpride is essential before this person can be expected to function effectively following discharge from hospital. One would expect the scriptwriters to do a better job researching their subject before putting pen to paper. How can the editors have allowed such nonsense?

Jillibean Jun 16 2023 12:15 am This drama Fix You is for sophisticated adults; younger people won't understand it. I loved every minute of it and consider it a borderline masterpiece. The two leads had sweet funny humor together. The OST was fantastic. I will definitely return to it in future again and again.

Park Min May 11 2023 12:41 pm This is the first (I think) and worst mental-illness/psychiatrists focused drama! It's common for the patient to crush over their psychiatrist and fall in love, because they are mentally unstable and vulnerable, but once the roles are flipped and the psychiatrist is the one imposing their feelings on the patient then there's a big problem at hand.

The first obvious problem is for a psychiatrist to fall in love with his patient. It would probably be less of a problem for a doctor in another field but not a psychiatrist, a professional dealing with mentally vulnerable people. With all that being said, I could easily turn a blind eye to the whole ordeal if the drama was comedic/light/romance and never took the serious and professional route, of which this drama tried so hard to go for. The second big problem, there was a blatant attempt to stir the narrative in that direction while disregarding any coherency at the same time. We can clearly see an example of that right from the beginning in episode 1 with everything happened with the cop incident.

This drama had nothing to offer other than a pretty cast. Anyway, they failed miserably in handling the concept and ended up producing a very poor product. A disgrace to real professional psychiatrists!

con2323 Jun 20 2021 12:22 pm I think there was an error in the survey here because of the title Soul Mechanic or Fix You. Which is which? Which title that he used in the survey or in the research? Why it was an NR? I'ts unbelievable. I hope this will not happen in the new drama of JungSoMin, which has also 2 titles the MonthlyMagazineHome or MonthlyHouse. They must check the survey form on what title they are using that should coincide with the drama title used in the television program. Sometimes researchers who are conducting the survey seem bias. Maybe its according to their favorites ( JUST AN ASSUMPTION, sorry if I'm wrong)

It was very refreshing and comforting to watch this drama :( It deserves more rating honestly.. i dont get why south koreans have such poor taste and just sleep on the good things, it's a pity :]

Loved both Shin Ha-Kyun and Jung So-Min in their roles but the nurses, doctors, patients and all supporting cast gave such amazing performances, I am floored how they are not more famous.

Well done drama, wish I can find more like this one.

Previously I see person with such unusual attitute, habits or character with prejudice. Now I can be more emphatic too. The most importantly now I know, such mental illness is not a character one person have, It can be cured. It 's so relieve hahaha.. cos sometimes i think I have such psychological issue too hahahah...well, it is really beautiful drama, recommend it!!!

saranghae Sep 03 2020 5:02 am i know this drama is good but didnt have the drive to continue watching so dumped it after the 1st epi i think kbs2 new more or less that the ratings would have been horrendously very low but still did it anyway why? i think is cz as a public broadcaster as opposed to commercial b they are more concern about social issues, morals etc that could be affecting and on the rise in korea so ratings was not all so if this is true i think is commendable that they are doing a good job

If you dont watch or dont like this drama because the age gap, i should remain you the main actors in Mr. Sunshine, the love story between Aeshin (Kim Taeri) and Eugene (Lee Byunghun), and their age gap is 20 years old. I love the chemistry of both actors, and the thing about age - gap is such nonsense, the script and portrayal of the character is much more important and they nailed it. It felt sad that it has low - ratings but nevertheless kudos to the team.

I can picture it as a great American medical drama series as the stories can be infinite especially on the topic of psychiatric problems which is more and more common now around the world but especially in America. It didn't do as well as it should since mental issues is still a taboo topic in Asia although it's of growing importance. Two thumbs up! Daebak!

JuDo Fan Jun 12 2020 8:29 pm @daebak! Thanks for taking interest in my review. As far as examples in him breaking a code of conduct, let me explain how it usually goes. There is a code of conduct for doctors, which is in the most part general around the World, and is taught at the medical school, there are exams on it, nothing unusual. Also, there is a legal code of conduct based on the country, where the doctor practices, Korea, in this case, and lastly there is hospital code of conduct. The conducts are based on ethics/morals and are also legal, the legal ones being malpractice as the most common case. Code of conduct is not only based on behavior of the doctor, but also the behavior of the patient. In this case Han Woo-Joo is overly friendly, but that is because of her disease. She latches onto anyone who shows her affection, being friendly, smiling at her etc. (Her case is really sad, given how she was betrayed over and over again.) Instead of Lee Shi-Joon treating her, he indulges in her behavior, wanting to see how far he can take it. He should only see her professionally, in session or at the hospital. Him getting her the job is not an issue as much as his really bad judgment that she is ready for it. If you notice, instead of doing things by the law, like the schizophrenic kid’s mom did not show up for 3 days, he chose to let him stay, yet he could have gotten him legally admitted. The boy needed help, but instead LSJ gets in trouble. Some see his behavior as helpful/friendly/caring, I personally see it as negligent and reckless. As far as JYW handing HWJ to LSJ; at first I thought she wanted to get rid off her, but when they made it clear it was for LSJ to get better, I was furious. HWJ is not supposed to be the equivalent of training wheels for LSJ to get back over his patient committing suicide while under his watch. Are you kidding me???? Unless LSJ is a patient of JYW, which he is not, JYW has to have as HWJ’s doctor her best interest in mind. Doctors have a motto “Do no harm.” I guess JYW does not. Instead of treating or at least recommending someone professional to treat HWJ, she lets her off on her mentally incapacitated colleague/her crush LSJ. There is so much wrong with all of this, it’s like a Public Service Announcement to never see a psychiatrist. I would like to also add that the whole chapter with the fake cop was so badly done it wasn’t even funny. The writer decided to just let HWJ crash and burn, never to get any recourse for LSJ and the fake cops actions. Never mind the fact that no police officer did notice a fake cop. There was no official public apology, nothing. This what the writer did to conveniently shove off HWJ to LSJ. As I have stated before, all the actors are basically A-List, the writer cannot write to actually utilize them. Basically the writer wasted their talent, it’s a shame because it will be another year or longer till we see them again. I highly doubt that they will play together any time soon, if at all. One last thing, I know this goes for USA specifically, I imagine same goes for other countries. The doctors talking about their patients in public, mainly at the restaurant is a HIPAA violation, which is a very serious legal offense.

And what is your opinion about his colleague, Dr Young-Won that hands away Wooju to Shi Joon as part of his treatment? Because she did mention that he has to face his fear, in this case, another BPD patient for him to be treated.

JuDo Fan Jun 09 2020 4:22 pm @Ayrin Well, I will make this simple for you. You said he is a kind doctor? Would you be OK if your cardiologist or OB/GYN behaved same way? Either way there is a professional code of conduct, which he basically breaks several times every episode. You said he cares for his patients? Cares so much that he happens to let them kill themselves on his watch? Doctors should be bad tempered? Of course not!!! You see the World apparently as black and white, hot or cold. There are classes on bedside manners btw. in medical school and also an exam; he would of course fail them. Lastly, he is himself sick, mentally, because of the tragic suicide. This is where the whole drama seriously shows its flaws. His friends, also professional psychiatrists, somehow let him practice; even though, they know he is nowhere near OK to do so? Friends don't let friends drunk drive, is the best fitting quote for this situation. Either way, the viewership confirms the quality of the script. Actors act based on the script, and they all do so very well, just the script is very flawed. Wish the writer had gotten some help from professionals.

He is kind doctor who extremely cares about his patients & doesn't let them go until they get well enough, even risking his own health & job, "manipulating"??!! Don't you see he is that kind to all his patients, not only her? So doctors should be bad tempered just in case their patients not fall in love with them!! This is a good drama about mental health issues. Change your view, it's too much negative.

Psychiatrist who preys on his victim JSM, misdiagnozing her and then mentally abusing her into having a future relationship with him. What an evil concept! Men like him must be stopped!!! The writer is sick to perpetuate a mind rape. Imagine a desperate patient such as JSM in hopes to get better somehow ends up in a relationship with her caregiver. Is it her will to get with SHK? Or is it him manipulating her here and there to get her to depend on him. JSM portrays a strong independent woman who has, like many of us been betrayed by"men", only to happen to her again. Awful show writer should be ashamed!!! I feel bad for JSM to bestuck in such a role, however, her portrayal is superb as always. Fighting JSM in this hauvinistic world!

JJ Jun 05 2020 5:49 am I don't mind with their romance. Some people dislike it because of the age gap but in real life such thing happens. Shin Ha Kyun (1974) dated Kim Go Eun (1991) before. While Jung So Min (1989) is two years older than Kim Go Eun. I'm not saying they should date because So Min is dating Lee Joon (1988) anyway. What's funny is Lee Joon once played Shin Ha Kyun's son in Mr. Baek. Haha

It's already hard to find someone you connect with and fall in love with. Love is something rare so when it happens, why bother minding about age gap. The thing with feeling, you just can't help with it. Everyone has different preference. People are attracted by different thing. While age doesn't decide personality and behaviour of someone. Some people have a young mind despite their age and the contrary some people has old mind (oldies) despite their young age.

Elle May 29 2020 8:16 am Wow, So-Min is really good in portraying her character. This drama made me realised, in the past, i might have being mean towards people with mental issues. They are sure annoying, but what they need is help, not hatred. And i admire her bff who can stand being her friend given her toxic behaviour. We often avoid toxic people, but what if they actually need our help. This drama is an eye opener..

May 28 2020 6:20 am soul mechanic kdrama is really an eye-opening to some (at least for me it is) and it gives a clearer insight of mind sickness to the viewers. jung so min definitely ace her role and the way she expresses her emotion deserves an applause. and i truly believe that the age gap is totally fine. i mean, who wouldn’t fall in love with someone that cares for you and heal your wound at the same time?

p/s: to whoever that are reading the reviews before deciding to watch this series, just go for it! you won’t be disappointed.

Don't care about their age gap, well actually i did before i watch this drama but seriously i change my mind after i watched tou people who critize a lot about their age gap maybe haven't watch this drama yet, cause i am sure after they watch this drama, they will love it! The story just beautifuuul, and the chemistry between the leads is good. And actually jung somin is old enough, she's 31 dude!! Anw i think they are sweet and suit for each other an ofc i want love line between them and hope they'll end up together

The voyeur gets the punishment, but there's a lack of critical examination as to why Wooju is drawn to an older man and why it doesn't seem healthy. It has all sorts of ethical issues given he's a doctor where she's getting treated.

Kdramalover May 21 2020 2:25 pm People seriously need to stop complaining about the age gap... there were many brilliant dramas with big age gaps between the leads we have seen before; some of them being Mr.Sunshine, My Mister, Romance is a Bonus Book, etc.

I personally think both my leads are doing amazing in the show so far. The emotions and acting is raw and fresh. Jung So Min's acting is brilliant and REAL. The plot is unique and talks about one of the vital aspects of health South Koreans tend to overlook but are getting better on these days: which is mental stability and health.

Nonetheless I am looking forward to the progression of this show!

Comedy? May 17 2020 11:02 pm How is this a comedy? I think it is sad and uncomfortable to watch. The LF is usually a great actress but in the drama she terrible, unconvincing and is over her head. I have 4 episodes but now I'm dropping it.

Shin ha kyun is super good looking,an eye candy despite his age. He is still my all time fav hero besides lee dong gun. They're such flawless awesome actors! ?Really cant wait!

I know you want your oppars but that's not happening, my child. Go get a lollipop and accept reality. As for the rest of us, we will happily watch this drama and heal at this time. This seems to be a humane/mental health focused drama so I'll be expecting a touching, close to reality drama.
