As people get older, they have less time to spend with their families and separately live their own lives. They become to meet someone who they share their time, feelings, and even their secrets. Under this circumstance, the family becomes like strangers and people in relationships become like family.

Kim Eun-Hee (Han Ye-Ri) is the second daughter in a family. She is tender and thoughtful. She easily trusts people. Kim Eun-Hee works at publishing company.

Nelson Jul 16 2024 4:18 pm Great drama, yes most of the issues would simply be resolved just by talking openly with each other but this is a drama, not real life.

Perhaps it's one to be watched by adults that don't need constant reassurance of smiling faces and perfect relationships on TV.

Jaine Apr 27 2024 6:50 am April 24 less than a year after my initial comment, giving this a second look because of Kim Ji-Suk. Watching him on the Monthly Magazine show I came back to this and am impressed with how believable his acting is here. Because of my attention to him it isn’t grating on me how the eldest sister gets no range whatsoever and how the mom has only dark despair because I know even in war torn countries love makes people smile even in sorrow so I wish the writer knew that. Maybe he wrote Samdalri too. I’ll have to check. Anyway the marketing poster is a joke. I renamed the show in my mind,

“sleuthing secrets and shameless sadness”.

Jaine Jul 14 2023 10:52 am Wow the poster of them smiling is sure funny! Maybe they smiled after the final “ cut!! it’s a Wrap” and then got to relax those muscles. They say it takes more muscle power to frown than to smile. It is like the book “Scandinavian Humor and other myths” with the old ladies frowning on the cover photo. The subtitle to this show could be; Frowning and twitching. Or how to be mad for decades. Or how to make secrets a holy hell for yourself. Or how to live miserable in 5 east steps. Or when being nosy or relevant or kind or compassionate just doesn’t matter anymore. Anyway it is nice to see the photo of them looking happy!

Park Min Jul 01 2023 5:33 am This drama was a one big exhibition of petty fights with a lot of noise and little to no substance. These arguments and fights were the main driving element of the drama and it's important for it to be supported by a good dialogue. Unfortunately, nothing profound came out of any of them. Most of them were "fixed" by clearing misunderstandings from the past. It didn't feel it provided a real development and growth for these characters. Especially for repeated offenders. None of the characters/relationships were appealing. There was no place for romance but they insisted on shoving it in for the last 1/3 to pair everyone. They should've kept it about the family only. I didn't like how they ended most episodes with a scene that wasn't resumed until 15 minutes of the next episode.

I was expecting a proper "life" drama grounded to reality but shoving too many tropes ruined it (miscarriage, misunderstandings, amnesia, birth secret, illness, cheating, friends to lovers, hidden past, ex-spouse comes back ..etc). This is a melodrama in disguise!! There was one particular really stupid misunderstanding that lasted over 30 years. The writers weren't even trying! However, the worst part of the drama has to be all the scenes of Eun Hee talking about her love life with Chan Hyuk, these were mind numbing. This drama doesn't have much to offer other than some pretty visuals.

nalimo Mar 15 2023 1:27 pm I just watched one episode but like if I had a friend who won't tell me I'm being cheated on, and acts like nothing is wrong with the other person I'll remove that "friend" out of my life too, like it's the most sensible thing to do why the show doesn't present it in that light and gives a message like "it's okay for your friend to betray and lie to you" like I was shocked when the girl apologized years later, also with sister too, it's sad that she was also going through hardships at that time but the way she reacted to the cheating scandal was not acceptable

I love drama romances the most so this was alittle slow in that sense, but gave us that with Chan and Eun hee but made us wait till the very end for their romance. I also wanted more romance with the parents and was kind of confused about the mother taking off but what ever. My favorite was Kim Jo suck. Love his charm. I thought the dad and the mom played their part well. Families are surprising. If you re lucky enough to stay together for many many years then consider yourself very lucky!!! Good story line.

Bailey Sep 09 2022 7:47 am I started watching Korean TV shows beginning with Attorney Woo and fell in love. Then I watched this show and I thought it was wonderful. I'm hooked on Korean shows now (as long as they have subtitles).

matrice Aug 14 2022 6:01 am I truly feel that the older sister was even too civil with her mother, in the beginning, considering that she was convinced the woman had tried to murder her as a child. In light of that fact, and frankly, in general, even regardless of that fact, she seemed to be the one with her s**t mostly together. The mess with her husband was not really her fault, so I wouldn't count it as her messing up her life.

matrice Aug 10 2022 3:30 pm On a second view, I found very appealing the older sister, I like snarky character. The boss was a sleaze who I despised. I was particularly repulsed by the fact that he tried to act as if his behavior was completely normal, by telling her that if he was not a coward his heart would explode, and pretending that the ask here was to be perfect all the time, rather than, say, to tell his girlfriend in no uncertain terms that he wanted to split up, as he then effortlessly did. The guy repeated this hogwash multiple times.

Another disturbing aspect was the way he acted to his girlfriend as if he didn't cheat because they had split up, but otherwise acknowledged that they didn't to Eun Hee. Also disturbing that the latter and her friend/future lover first joke about her boss' shamelessness, then she agrees to become his mistress, despite having just told him that she had been cheated on in the past, after an almost decade long relationship. She was even accused of cheating, and even has a flashback to the event, asking herself what changed... well, what changes was that at the time you didn't cheat, and this time you did. The scumbag even hid the fact he was in a relationship from her, which ought to have been a deal breaker in and of itself.

Now, the presence of his girlfriend limits the damage as she essentially "blocks" them, but that's besides the point. Her attitude is what it's impossible to understand. She tells her boss that since she was not the reason for the breakup she does not feel burdened. However by the same token the "other woman" she despised and has now turned into could have used the same excuse. Lastly, to break a spear in her favor, I can see why she would break up with her friend, given the latter tells her that her relationship was not guaranteed: that's not why she was complaining, it's not about the relationship being broken, it's about not being lied to for three years and humiliated.

All in all, I don't really like her friend going along with what she does, rather than telling her how effed up it is. Particularly given the parallels between it and what destroyed her family, or her sister's family: the way her behavior mirrors those other situations, or the one with her ex and his "other woman", who are all treated, correctly, as lying scum. Double standard much?

Returning to the boss, it's impossible to understand why one should take seriously him uprooting his entire life and going to Korea, the importance meeting his pen pal had in all this, with the fact he doesn't bother to break up with his girlfriend before that, and deceives his pen pal (no reason, it would have been easier not to do that, and it could have lead to said pen pal not wanting to have anything to do with him anymore, when this situation was so easily avoidable). Also, I would have liked clarification regrading the accusation of him touching his drunken subordinate inappropriately (it's something rather important to disprove, I would guess). And the fact that apparently he had cheated in the past. Not to mention the fact that he had been the one to beg his ex gf to stay with him three years prior, and now he deceives/hurt/humiliates her by cheating on her, and not even having the courage to own up to it.

All in all, I feel that the "evil gf" trope was kind of abused (personally, I like to see the ex gf "counterattacking", despite this not being a LN). She was made to act crazily, while in reality, factually speaking, she had more than enough to complain, what with her boyfriend cheating on her in the past, harrassing her into not leaving him, and then cheating on her right before breaking up?

- Of course there was no issue with Eun Hee sleeping with the boss (apart from what one might feel about the appropriateness of this kind of office romance in general... keeping in mind taht this is supposed to be in a "realistic" setting, but then again, your mileage may vary, and him allegedly trying to sleep with a drunken coworker -not sure if a subordinate- makes any consideration on of office romance besides the point, cementing his sleaze status beyond what even his serial cheating even could), the point below was that she was okay to continue it once she learned he was in a long term relationship (whether his girlfriend was unpleasant, as the show tried to made her out to be, is besides the point since at that time she had not met her and the woman had done nothing to her... by the same token, the fac this serial cheater would have found someone else to cheat if she was not available, is also besides the point, like a corrupt politician saying that if they don't let someone bribe them they would bribe someone else).

- The point about her long time friend and eventual lover is not that she mistreated him (apart from showing she didn't know him at all when she misunderstood his actions, and given that the whole issue was about her cheating ex boyfriend, and she then went and did the very same thing the woman that slept with her ex did, she hardy has any leg to stand on)... it's not about what she did to him, it's about the kind of person she is. To be explicit, she is the kind of person that would hurt and humiliate someone else who never did anything to her for a superficial whim; he, by contrast, is the kind of person that would never even consider doing anything of the sort. We know what his opinion is of such people (who, statistically speaking, factually and thankfully, in the minority) from the "lesson" he taught her traitorous ex boyfriend, who he correctly considered scum.

So, he should have enough self respect to realize that he deserves to be with the same kind of people that he himself is. It's not that she did it to her, it's that she is the kind of person that would behave this way (and there is no serious acknowledgment, growth and course correction, or taking responsibility in any serious way, plus her scummy boss being still in her life and his actions being swept under the rug with no consequence of note), and this does not bode well for the future (again, most people wouldn't behave that way, as a factual statistical reality, and he could do better, objectively speaking, with those more deserving or, if you prefer, suitable, people).

- On that note, I find the lack of actual reflection on those actions and growth to be telling (more pride/lionizing in the don't-care-for-the-rumors scene, as if there was nothing wrong in what she did... again, the pleasantness or lack thereof of his gf is not an argument, as at the time she did not know her and the woman had not done anything to her at the time she chose to hurt her the same way that other woman in the past hurt her by sleeping with her ex boyfriend... a hypocrite lacking in awareness). There is also the fact that the scummy serial cheater and creepily rapey dude that allegedly tried to bed a drunken Kyeong-Ok is still in her life after their breakup -no reflection on his behavior, realization of the scummy creep he is, not that she has much right to complain given she willingly went along after knowing, in short his behavior is swept under the rug and he gets away scott free... and having to be in his same circle, as a consequence of being in Hee's life, as a friend/true lover, is also one of the reasons I don't really think Chan-Hyeok should be in that kind of relationship with her.

- There is an obvious comparison with Once Again, which also deals with themes such as infidelity, etc., but doesn't try, with an utterly broken moral compass, to make us root for or sympathize, or ignore as if we had memory issues (an insult to the viewer's intelligence) for a serial cheater who creepily attempted a rape-y approach of a drunken coworker (subordinate? Not sure); or someone that we sympathize with because she suffered horribly for her boyfriend's betrayal, and even cut her long time friend off over it, and then continues a relationship with her boss after learning that he had a girlfriend, being willing to humiliate and hurt someone that (irrespective of how the show tries to demonize her) she had never met and who had never done anything wrong to her at the point in time she chose to sleep with her boyfriend behind her back.

All in all, I found this show much more realistic than My Unfamiliar Family's treatment of the topic, that while not quite reaching Grey's Anatomy-esque levels of ubiquity, is still normalized far more than its factual, statistical reality. By contrast Once Again's experience was closer to what one might encounter in regular life -i.e. it's not normalized, nor nearly as ubiquitous, as in the aforementioned shows: it happens, but people react with the expected levels of revulsion and regular characters have a minimum of self respect and a barely functioning moral compass, rather than suddenly becoming what they hate for no apparent reason: I will die on the hill that it makes no sense for Hee to react the way she does in the show to the news that the boss she has slept with was in a long term relationship, be it either because of her experiences on the other side of the coin, or because of a modicum shred of self respect and an even barely functional moral compass... and if that was not the case, I am not sure how any thinking person is supposed to sympathize or root for her, when the reason the viewer initially sympathized with her was exactly that she suffered because someone they correctly identify, and we are supposed to think of, as a scumbag, had done the exact thing to her-. I think that I don't need to further comment on what I think of the whitewashing and handwavy excuse-making that leads to her sleazy boss' lack of comeuppance. A serial cheater and allegedly someone that tried, in a creepily rapey manner, to sleep with a drunk coworker (not sure if a subordinate?): the guy is in Hee's life and suffers no consequences of note by the end of the show, nothing to see, just a regular guy sleeping with his subordinates, sometimes allegedly givin it a go when they are not in a state to say no.

matrice Aug 02 2022 12:16 pm Frankly, this was Gray's anatomy-esque in terms of the mess and amount of cheating, with rather reprehensible characters that the Drama is apparently trying to get us to root for. A sleazy boss that is a serial cheater and allegedly, in a pretty rape-y act, attempted to take advantage of a drunken colleague. Eun Hee, not only sleeps with him, but continues to see him ever after knowing he has a long term girlfriend. This despite the fact that she had been betrayed by her lover, and everyone treated the guy, correctly, like a scumbag.

I didn't like how her not caring about potential rumors was presented in terms "I was bold enough to do it, I am bold enough to deal with the rumors": this was not something worth of being lionized, it was something shameful and pointless, needlessly hurtful, and in fact she did not take responsibility for her actions in any kind of adult way (she didn't apologize to the party she hurt, who correctly told her in no uncertain terms what she thought of her, for example, though I certainly don't approve of subsequent attempts of the ex-gf to conspire to get in the creep's graces with some schemes, if nothing else because the guy is not worth it, and the ex-gf herself admitted he used to cheat on her): she basically hurt someone she didn't know and never did anything wrong to her at the time, all for a superficial whim (she had just met her boss and was not in love with the guy, not that it would have mattered anyway, plus they were on the way out and there was no need at all to cheat, given the would break up with his girlfriend soon after, he was just his creepy self, and she was okay with it, even insisting to keep it a secret... I would say that continuing with the relationship when he confessed to be a creepy serial cheater was not a wise decision or something anyone with a shred of self respect would have done, but then again, given that she was the kind of person that would hurt someone that never did anything to her for a whim, maybe having a low opinion of herself was not factually incorrect).

Again, pretty similar to Once Again, who also had some cheating. But frankly Once Again had more normal reactions and behaviors: this Gray's anatomy-esque ubiquitous cheating is statistically not representative and while such people exist, like the wife beating drunks, etc., I would prefer not to have the show's utterly broken moral compass making me root for them (i.e. I am supposed to think Hee's cheating bf is scum, but not her creep, possibly rapist of a boss, or herself, for that matter?).

We do have "normal" people, like Hee's friend and "true love", but given her actions, the fact that she is the kind of person that would hurt and humiliate someone that never did anything to her for a whim, while he is the kind of person that would never even contemplate doing something like that, by continuing to see her boss when he was in a long term relationship, I am not sure I can support their relationship... actually, the kind of circle he would be a part of if she stays in his life, namely the continued presence of her boss in it, is also disturbing (I found it particularly creepy that the boss' creepy behavior -serial cheating, allegedly rape-y trying to come on to a drunk woman- goes unacknowledged, and, having been swept under the rug, he remains around). Quite frankly, he knows she is the kind of person that would do something like this to someone she didn't know, he knows that she has no real problems with the scumbag's behavior, given he is still around (nor does she have any right to, having been the "other party" in this home-wrecking situation), he also knows what he thinks of such people (given the fact he beat up her cheating ex boyfriend, and found him generally repulsive), and he knows what kind of person he is (someone that never did, and would never contemplate, hurting someone needlessly out of a whim): he deserves someone like himself, and most people would not behave like Hee or her creepy boss: this is simply a factual and statistical reality. I would like him to have the self respect to realize that he deserves someone who, similar to him, would have never hurt another person in such a callous way, particularly after having been put through the same thing by someone they, correctly, universally acknowledged as a scumbag.

malcom Aug 02 2022 11:47 am I felt zero sympathy for Eun Hee, given that she was completely ready to hurt and humiliate someone she had never met and that had never done anything to her, for a self absorbed whim. She was not head over heels for her boss (not that it would have changed anything), she had just started the unwise choice of sleeping with him without knowing he was involved with someone else. There was no reason to, given he could have broken off things with his girlfriend.

The fact that people do this in real life is really not the point. More poignantly, *some* people do this in real life, while others (the majority, statistically speaking) never do nor would consider. Her friend/lover being one of them. See her boyfriend that everyone treats, correctly, like a scumbag. The fact that such people exist is really a non sequitur. So do wife beating drunks. Or serial cheaters like her boss (if that was not creepy enough, the allegation of his rape-y attempt to take advantage of a drunken colleague certainly was).

I don't see her not caring about the rumors as a sign of courage and taking responsibility for her own actions, on the contrary the use of the word "bold" makes it seem like she thinks this is brave of her, rather than she understand how shameful her behavior was. Taking responsibility for her actions would have involved actually apologizing to his ex girlfriend (who had some empathy for: given the fact Eun Hee didn't care at all about her well-being, it's hard to see why she should *not* have told her exactly, in clear terms, how little she thought of her; more generally, wrt her being vindictive, this was her attitude towards someone she correctly saw as an enemy who didn't care a bit about her suffering, in order to satisfy a whim, and if she didn't care about hurting her, it's hard to see why she should show her any consideration... that said, I don't like this attempt to "fight" for the sleaze, particularly given how she, rather absurdly, said he had a "habit" of "cheating on her a bit" (like being a little bit pregnant or drinking a bit of poison... it's almost as if she is saying that he has a bait of walking a bit after dinner: this to me speaks of low self worth).

In short, any sympathy I felt for her for her boyfriend's disgusting actions went out of the window when I saw her behave in exactly the same way (anyone with a shred of self respect and sense the sleaze she had been dating when he told her he was in a long term relationship would have bailed... then again, if this is the kind of person she turned out to be when the rubber met the road, probably low self worth is not a wrong feelings to have). Her boss was a creep, and I didn't like that they kept any sort of contact after their breakup. All in all, I didn't think she deserved her friend/real lover at all.

The fact I didn't like her made me like her cold/calculating sister. I can see how the fact her husband was gay could have made things easier for her, because it was out of her hands. Related specifically to the sexuality bit, I sympathized with the husband, though this is not an endorsement of his entire behavior.

I just wanted to slap them both. Then they had the gall to blame the family dysfunction and problems of the kids ON THE KIDS!

kiri Oct 15 2021 3:01 pm one of the best kdrama ive seen, i cried like half of the whole series, ji woos dumb decision really got me, cuz he's the youngest, not really close to the oldest and always being left out from family discussions cuz he's the baby of the family. coming from a problematic household, this drama hold special place in my heart.

It really makes you think about your own family, your own relationships within the family and outside the family, and what misunderstandings may have taken place because of the lack of communication and how they may or may not have been resolved. It really stays with you. The acting was exceptionally good too and all the characters were very believable. I have recommended this drama to everyone I know and they have all loved it and had the same reaction that I had.

This is slice of life at its core, if you want to escape reality through entertainment, this is not for you. Even amidst all the heaviness, there were moments of laughter, joy, comfort, and friendship, because life isn't all misery.

nayeon Oct 21 2020 9:48 pm this drama is interesting the first few episodes. however, there were less happy moments, like, why is everything filled with sorrow? why they keep on fighting? every conversation is so serious it make me slowly getting bored and I find myself using the skip button frequently.

the story also so slow in paced, you keep wondering what would this will be in the end?! they keep going around in circle, no solution at all!! it frustrates me a lot!

dropped it after episode 11, i just have to. can't stand the freeze storyline.

Kris Aug 09 2020 1:05 pm I’ve been binge watching I love it. Only done with 5 episodes so far. I gasp every episode. I usually like the touching and funny family dramas but I really like this one. It’s more serious and real. This is so well done. I love the father actor able to play so many emotions. The first episode was a bit laying of the background but by the end of the second you really start to get the vibe of the series.

Very proud that I did watch it till the end. The ending was very good though!

Kimchi Jul 22 2020 2:59 am I've watching until eps 14 and I can say this is one of the best family drama i've ever watch. Maybe bcs the plot somewhat look like my family, so I feel more relatable. Sometimes family really doesn't know everything. Each character plays the role very well. Eunjoo is like a typical firstborn, at first I hated her character, but at the end I really love her! She was very mature to face the problem. I like Eunhee, she's an easygoing person. Anyway I like this drama!

Penny Jul 18 2020 6:50 am I started watching this drama without any expectation. But as I went on, the story just gets more interesting. Such a beautiful family drama. Not the typical yet very relatable. The story lives true to the saying that “families would fight, misunderstand each other, but in the end family is family”. Each character is well played. Great lessons about friendship, marriage, forgiveness, and acceptance. Another take away is the importance of communication and transparency in marriage, it could saved the mom and dad years of struggle if only they had honest talks. I love Eun hee most specially, I love how she balances everyone in the family with her easy and happy personality. And Han Yeri is rocking that short hair. This drama is great. It’s worth your time.

The relationship between Kim Eun-Hee and Park Chan-Hyeok has been the highlight of the story for me thus far.

If you are not sure and find it too intense and depressing within some middle episodes, just brace yourselves, everything got untangled by some last episodes. The message is bold, yet very warm and touching. I was literally in tears in ep 12 learning the bold and warm message of affection from this drama. One of the best drama in 2020!!!

Im i mean look at theeem they relationship is so mature not typical clingy relationship and i love it but it seems like the writernim wants eun hee ends up with chan hyuk and i still love the idea of it bcs i like chanhyuk too kkk! this drama really daebak it’s different with other dramas i’m not kidding u guys should watch it and thank me later

When it first started, i watched the first episode without expecting much from a family drama. Thought it would just be like any family drama, though i was a little curious how a family drama could only be for 16ep? Then, after the 2nd ep- i was hooked & totally enthralled with the storyline. Just really really daebak- the secrets, the relationships, the meaning of family, the expectations that comes with a role & responsibility, of grief & acceptance, past experiences, life & personal conflicts, new beginnings & moving on- all Intertwined, yet so nicely & warmly presented in this drama. I must say all the actors too are simply amazing. This drama currently is really at a different level. Just loving it....each week seems so far away. Fighting while waiting for next mon & tue.

Eun Hee thought it was Chanhyuk & Eunjoo that came out from the car instead of Jiwoo & Eunjoo. That scene meant to imply that Eun Hee unconsciously afraid that chanhyuk would see her kissing with mr. Im. Hope it helps!

I minute the guys is standing in front of the car and with no explanation he's somewhere else eat with some other girl. It tries to give it a mysterious feel but it ends up being just confusing.

The plot is interesting, as well as the characters in it. I have watched till episode 4 and I totally love how the characters' secrets and stories unravel one by one. Not to mention that the pace of the drama is just ?. It neither fast nor slow. The pace is just perfect. I hope the following episodes will be as good as the four earlier episodes.

Living together and calling each other "family" doesnt mean you know about them. even though, you are blood line. We often take it for granted our relationship between family and dangggg so many time passed. Communication and understanding are important.

I really looking forward for the development of each character here :)

P.s: the coffee part timer is really bother me nad I really curious what is going on with 1st daughter problem with His husband.

Han Ye Ri is a stellar natural actress, too-she can pull off a ton of roles and make me cry like a baby if the script calls for it but also blush like a schoolgirl, the same way Kim Ji Suk is able to do (he is so fine, seriously-so little attention for SUCH a good looking man!)... should be a little hazardous to my cheek temperature but wonderfully lovely.
