Princess Deokhye (Son Ye-Jin) was the last princess of Korea.

Under Japanese colonial rule, she is taken to Japan as a hostage. With the era's harsh conditions, she struggles to maintain the hope of the Korean people. Jang-Han (Park Hae-Il) is a fighter for Korean independence. His mission is to bring Princess Deokhye back to South Korea and he also loves her.

Notes

Based on novel "Deokhyeongjoo" by Kwon Bi-Young (published December 14, 2009 by Dasan Books). The novel is based on the life a real life historical figure.
Filming began November 30, 2015 and finished March 23, 2016. Shooting took place in South Korea and Japan.
Actress Son Ye-Jin previously worked with director Hur Jin-Ho in 2005 film "April Snow."

Eddie Feb 25 2026 8:08 pm Sighs... For quite a while I really searched for this movie to watch. I finally did tonight, thanks to Bilibili. I never saw the trailer but, somehow, I was attracted to this movie since the first day I stumbled upon on it online. Maybe it was the captivating title that has a poetic feel? I don't know... Sufficient to say, I'm beyond glad I finally watched it.

Korea has a very rich history, even above those who have troubled her peace in centuries past. Again, and again, I have been completely mesmerized by it, and I'm grateful to the writers for always making a solid presentation. At this point, I just might take a course in korean history lol.

The Last Princess is a master piece. Son Ye-jin did a wonderful execution of her role, as did the other actors. My hope is that Korean writers stay committed in telling us more about the history of their homeland.

I do hope the Korean people never forget beautiful Princess Deokhye and their history. It is true, Japanesse occupation among Asian countries are the most dark and horrible era , how they destroyed,annex and forced other nation became slaves for the great Japanesse empire.

Kim So Hyun was perfectly cast as the young princess because not only does she look a lot like Son Ye Jin (her nickname when she was younger was “Little Son Ye Jin”!), but also because she's such a great actress with a regal aura, no wonder she's always being cast a queen/princess/noble lady in historical dramas and movies. Great film with a great cast!

SYJ is such a great actress and can really move you to tears, gosh she truly deserved to win best actress in this movie! i was a little disappointed that in the end they nvr mentioned what happened to Kim jang han anymore? He was a good actor too & he did so much for the princess until the end! awesome movie, 2 thumbs up waaay up! i highly recommend this! I watched it because i missed SYJ already after CLOY ended over the w/end that's why she brought me to this movie!! great actress i love her!

SadHistory Sep 11 2017 3:53 am It's better than I expected. Don't listen to bad reviews and just watch it! I fell as a victim on those reviews and really regret it. This movie turned out to be BEAUTIFUL. As the movie develops, you get angrier at the bad guys and sympathetic on the protagonists. It's not boring, but I gotta say - it's painful and heartbreaking. Man, I tried not to cry as I wanted to absorb the story, but I couldn't help it. The desperation of the characters made me cry. 5 stars, will watch this again sometime.

Note to self - never read journalist's opinions or movie reviews from newspapers, smh...

Just had to get used to their Joseon lol cause the Joseon I'm used too didn't have cars since the era ended in1897 and in other historicals, I've never seen cars in them! Really cool! But didn't I see where it said 1961 in the movie? Gonna have to go back and check hahaha!

Kudos to this team! I admit that I wanted to watch it because of Kim So Hyun, but the entire cast as a whole made me fall in love, wail, and cry all over again.
